《Apocalypse》Episode 16: The First Aid Station
Advertisement
At the first aid station a medical officer was doing a quick visual inspection of each person. We joined a queue of around ten people. They were all civilians like us and all looked terrified and haggard. I am sure Mina and myself gave the same first impression too. Someone in the queue closer to the front was in obvious distress as they had started to moan loudly. The medical officer walked up to them and quickly signalled the attention of two soldiers who escorted the individual back towards the tent we had just passed.
Mina leaned into me. “Bitten?”
I looked back at the tent where he was taken. “I think so, and he wasn’t the only one. That tent seemed full of people in the same condition.”
Mina looked back towards the medical officer who had just waved two more people through.
“It looks like this is compulsory to get through the cordon.” She looked at me. “Let’s hope it’s quick.”
The line moved slowly. It looked like the medical officer was asking an array of questions in addition to visual observation. The noise within the cordon would rise and fall. Sporadic shooting was still occurring causing everyone to turn in the direction it came from, pausing momentarily before continuing with whatever they had been doing. Shouts and cries would carry during the lulls and I could feel my anxiety building. We were now two away from speaking to the medical officer.
Mina turned back to me. “Thanks again for getting me this far.”
"Your welcome", I said. “And had you not given me shelter overnight who knows what would have come of me. “
She smiled with sadness. “That was the worse night of my life. But I am glad you were there. Had Alistair arrived, and you not been present I would...” She stopped, and I reached out to touch her shoulder.

“None of this is going to be easy for any of us to process once this is over.” I said.
The medical officer waved through two more people and we were next. He looked from Mina to me. “Are you together?” Mina and me exchanged a quick glance and nodded.
"Names?"
"Mina Oroju...Bradley Young"
"Have either of you been in direct contact with the infected?"
We exchanged another look.
"Yes?"
"More details please? Any injuries or open wounds? Have you come into direct contact with their blood?"
We have no injuries, no open wounds.
And have you come into direct contact with their blood?
We exchanged another look between us
"Ummmm....."
Behind us there was another volley of shots, and screams. We looked behind and saw someone in military uniform stumble from the first aid tent covered in blood. A zombie followed, this time the lumbering variety, who latched onto the stricken soldier biting into his flesh.
Further screams were rising in a crescendo from the tent. Soldiers were running towards the tent while additional shots could be heard coming from the barricades. As we watched two fast zombies emerged from the tent.
One raced towards the oncoming soldiers and one raced towards us.

Blood & Noodles
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] As they always have, humanity hunts the gods roaming the world, craving the supernatural power that flows within their veins. Even a drop is zealously guarded, passed from master to student through the ages. It is with this stolen power that the Blooded - those with divine blood coursing through them - grasp beyond mortality and achieve prestige, power, and greatness. Yet, for every fraction of power gained, thousands perish, slain by the gods' supernatural prowess. But everything is beginning to change. Eight years ago, for the first time in human memory, a god was felled. Part-time chef and full-time nuisance Orvi wants nothing to do with gods. Living in a derelict city, his only concerns are ensuring his adopted family's restaurant is prosperous and how to best beat the neighbourhood boys in a fight. If he's lucky, he might even snag a date with the farmer's daughter at the market. But even though he cares nothing for the gods or their blood, the world won't leave him alone forever. Because to reach godhood, one must first leave their humanity behind. *** The first arc of Blood & Noodles follows the adolescent Orvi as he attempts to navigate his rapidly changing home and - by his own definition - protect his family. The story is told almost entirely in the first-person, from the perspective of a teenager who isn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. There are tragic elements, especially in the current arc. It's character-focused and driven, though the protagonist's shenanigans are backdropped by a world operating independently from him. Orvi's a generally light-hearted character, and though the story veers into darker territory, I also want it to be able to make readers smile. Action sequences, despite the fantastical elements, are meant to be grounded and clearly-conveyed; Orvi is a brawler, not a warrior. I'm trying to write a story that's enjoyable to read and flows nicely, mainly because it's more fun to write. I'm also trying to improve my writing, so any feedback, whether positive or negative, is welcome!

The 48 Laws of Power in Practice
Discover how power works in the world, through true stories and real-world applications. In the game of power, we all play - as either conscious or unconscious players. So we can't afford not to know the rules. The ** chapters have the most outrageous content. In each chapter, I will be summarizing one of the laws and how it can be applied to current events and pop culture. Some of you have told me the stories are what you enjoy the most. They are real, raw, and anonymous so that others may learn from my mistakes. There will be cringe-worthy stories of self-sabotage, but perhaps also some unlikely triumphs. Some of the details are changed to protect the innocent, (or perhaps guilty). "The 48 Laws of Power" by Robert Greene illustrates truths about power, through philosophy and lessons from three thousand years of history, which still hold true today. There is a lot to learn from each chapter. I encourage you to go on this journey with me by reflecting on how each law might apply to you. Together, may we learn from the past and take control of the future.
