《Manablood Mellie》Chapter 35: Pond Scum

The wet branches slapped her in the face as she ran through the forest. Sprinting for her life the monsters roar erupted in her ears as her feet slapped against the forest floor. Her foot catches a tree stump and she falls, making her eyes flash wide as she frantically looked around to see herself lying curled up around an egg. Jackson was soundly snoring in facing her holding her hand, and Mary cuddled behind her like her shield from the storms. She lay there as they dozed, holding her child. She had a child. An egg. She was like a damn chicken now. The egg was beautiful. Bluish black and scaled it shone in the early morning light. It was warm. She didn't choose this pregnancy but she appreciated the life in her hands. She made life at such a great cost. She just hoped his father could forgive her, and appreciate this child, for all its differences. She wondered if he would be a human or an elf or a dragon. What do dragons eat other than meat. She started thinking about breeding a sheep farm or something for this kid.
Extracting herself from the sleeping group she spent the rest of the morning watching the dawn at the caves entrance, humming and sewing a warming pouch for her child. She wished she had Robert here so he could inscribe some warming runes for her. She tucked the pouch between her breasts, next to the group of fairies. They hummed in approval as they were jostled in their sleep, seeming to like the new addition to thier sleeping arrangement. Mellie seemed to be turning into a walking hotel for little people. Mellie's moving castle! She patted her egg, still not believing her situation.
The egg began the size of a chicken egg, but it seemed to be growing. As the day pressed on the egg turned the size of a duck egg. It began to look like Mellie had a third boob. She continued to create new pouches for her child as they progressed down the mountain. She had just turned to ask Ralph more about Elven customs again when the ground dropped out from under them. Plummeting into a river the group thrashed under and over the water, sputtering. When the icy cold water crashed against the fairies they simply repelled it, as was their nature. Callum woke the exhausted fairies as he pulled Mellie above the water and off onto the shore. They pushed at the water and extracted Jackson then Mary and one of the elves. The elf with the black hair lay on the side of the cliff, head smashed to bits. Henry had cried a bit, having known the elf from the house that they had worked in together. Any of them could have had that elf's fate. All because they weren't looking out for a cliff.

The river flowed between the rockfaces like the ground had split just for the river. Getting from the shore to the land was going to require a substantial amount of climbing, with no climbing gear. The group lay freezing on the rocks next to the rushing river, curling into themselves seeking warmth. Old dried branches were collected and a fire was started on the largest ledge they could find next to the river. Bit by bit they built the fire up with the branches they could find. Navigating the terrain around the river proved to be dangerous and slippery. Settling into the largest platform they could find, they grouped around the fire, finally hanging their clothes on makeshift racks. As they stood in their underwear, Jackon wrapped his arms around Mellie. Giggling Mellie wrapped her arms around Mary, and Henry piled on top of Mary. They laughed and held eachother as they regained their warmth. As sexual tensions between the group began to rise and conversation began to fall, they retreated to their bedrolls, occasionally switching them out throughout the night.

As the dawn cracked across the sky, the group packed up their meager camp with smug smiles on their faces and began the new day. Finally emerging from the crack in the ground with the river, they came across a field of hives hanging from forest tree branches, dripping with honey. "We have got to get this! It's honey! And its winter honey! It's so much better! And the bees must be off feeding too! This never happens! Quick find something to catch this stuff!" said Jackson, giddily as he sucked some off his finger. Mellie stared at her feet pretending she couldn't make a bottle out of a stick, scared of another horrific will deflection. Mary shrugged and opened her bag of holding and began loading honeycombs one after the other, drenching her hands in the already sweet sticky fluid. Mellie licked some off Mary's fingers and smiled in delight as she began loading her bag as well. And then things started going wrong. Between handfuls of honeycomb, Henry looked up into the sky and saw the air was littered with black spots, slowly descending.

"Uhhh guys. Guys. GET UP RUN!" Henry yelled as the group raced into the woods, hiding beneath the trees as the Hazebees descended to their hives. Hazebees produced honey that had effects ranging from a simple marijuana high to a full blown opium high depending on your dosage. A drop and your anxieties were gone. A couple drops and you were in a haze of bliss. A few more drops and the user was napping. The hazebees honey bipassed poison resistance because it wasn't a poison. But it did slow you down when you were running from killer bees.
The group broke into a sprint through the woods, ducking under branches and racing between bushes. Their cloaks began to snag and tear on the reaching branches, and their feet began to blister with wear from travel. Breaking through the trees the group sprinted through the clearing and leapt into the pond. An elf that was sitting on the deck of the cabin stood up, surprised by their sudden arrival. The four refugees hid under the water, hiding their heads under the deck until Callum muttered, "Oh shoot." and began using his summon bees spell to redirect their persuers back to their plundered hives. "I'm sorry it's a new skill and it's been an tiring day." he apoligized emphatically. Mellie reassured him as he retreated back into her pocket, petting the egg. The egg apparently omitted a pleasant mana that helped feed the fairies. They had reassured her that it wouldn't hurt the egg, and she had no reason not to believe them. Ari and Mellie's fates were tied, and as Ari was their matriarch, they wouldn't do harm to Mellie.
They emerged from the pond with a few loveleeches lvl 3s in random spots on our bodies. They were little heart shaped leeches with puppy dog eyes that made kissy faces that pulled back to suck your blood. Some people kept these little terrors as pets, feeding them huge monsters as they grew. It was a novelty. Mellie squished them one by one.

Elliot isn't the first one taken, he was the last, or one of them at least. Careless divines, gods, or higher powers had been snatching humans through numerous means over the years. Those that returned brought minor tokens of their previous power if anything at all. Over time unrestrained magic became commonplace on earth. Which must have brought attention to us. The earth is ravaged by increasing levels of rogue magics, divines, and a war over resources and experience. Eventually resulting in a mass exodus of the remaining powerless humans by a coalition of gods. Now translocated to Vauthia where everyone has been given a path to power. They're met with an unfortunate reality. They've only been rescued from one dying world to be tasked with saving the new one. While at the same time they're apparently supposed to compete with one another. Meanwhile Elliot wasn't just given a path to power. He was given a choice. The opportunity for true power is offered. When as he reaches for it the power isn't all it's cracked up to be.Systemless in a world where everyone else has access to one Elliot must grapple with a multitude of problems from without and within. The 'gods' might actually be incompetent, uncaring, downright malicious, or all three. His power is constantly three steps behind those who chose the quick path to power. There's also the antisocial tendencies he's brought with him from earth. Can he trust the 'god' who seems to be taking him under their wing? Will he be able to catch up to his fellow earthlings who're ever increasing in power? Is it possible he may just break out of his shell along the way?*** What to expect ***The initial start will be quite slow, building the setting, history, and individuals involved. There is a small bit of progression in these early chapters for the MC, but more along the lines of figuring out how their systemless power works. though once the story gains traction it won't stop.*** Don't tell Elliot, but ***Elliot hates to admit it but he's very clearly antisocial. Not to mention troubles with thinking that stem from several un-diagnosed disorders he'd rather believe don't exist.*** Image Copyright *** //In this satellite image released by Copernicus Sentinel imagery, 2020 twitter page dated Dec. 31, 2019, shows wildfires burning across Australia.
