《Path of the Lilies》5. They’re The Real Trashes

“How has your practice been lately, Jiao’er?” Ye Xiao asked. It has been several weeks since he tested his daughter’s talent. Even though the result was not too good, Ye Jiao spent most of her days sitting around to sense Eon Energy in the surroundings. Given by the way she usually behaved, he always found her sleeping at the end of it.
Ye Jiao tilted her head. “I’m not sure myself, Dad.”
Ye Xiao scratched his head. He wanted to test Ye Jiao to find out about her progress, but he himself didn’t know how to do that. Internally, he sighed to himself as he really needed to find a teacher if he wanted his daughter to progress further.
“We’re going to the city today, Jiao’er. Are you ready?” Ye Xiao crouched down in front of his daughter.
Going to the city?
Ye Jiao could clearly remember the last time she went to the city because her father wanted to sell some animals that he hunted. Many children were pointing at her, mocking her for her uselessness and motherlessness. The story of how her mother heartlessly left her father was famous in the capital city. Almost everyone knew about them.
Walking around in the city was clearly not something she liked to do. Staying in the forest and enjoying the warmth nature gave her was the thing that she loved to do the most.
“Why are we going to the city, Dad?” Ye Jiao asked curiously.
“Yesterday is the school admission for new children. I want to try letting you go to school,” Ye Xiao replied. Even though he didn’t have any confidence of succeeding, he wanted to give it a try. As an ex-genius, he used to have close relationship with the principal. He would find a way to let them accept Ye Jiao even if it was only to teach her the knowledge of this world.

Ye Jiao looked at her father worriedly. With her current condition, it was close to impossible for the school to accept her. They only accepted people with talent even if it was a poor one because it was important to have the knowledge in this world if they wanted to stay alive.
“I can just study here, Dad.”
“No, it’s not enough,” Ye Xiao shook his head. He also wanted to do the same, but he wished for his daughter to receive the best treatment possible. His knowledge was extremely limited because he got married when he was still quite young. The time he got a child was actually the best time to develop his talent.
But he never regretted it.
Ye Jiao was hesitant, but she nodded her head. “Ok, Dad.”
“Good girl, change your clothes. We’re going to go.”
“Yes, Dad.”
Changing her clothes, Ye Jiao used a long dress that her father bought for her. It was green in color, perfectly suited with her green iris. After she had finished, she walked out of their room.
The small house has three rooms, one was the bathroom, one was their bedroom, and the last one was their living room plus kitchen. It was a bit cramped because of the size, but for two people, it was already enough.
Ye Jiao glanced at her father. Different than usual, her father wore his clothes neatly. His blue robe, which represented his identity as Eon Energy Master Rank 3, looked more dazzling than usual. Even though his appearance didn’t change much, he looked a bit older when he dressed up like this.
“How’s your Dad, Jiao’er?” Ye Xiao grinned. “I’m the most handsome man out there, right?”
Ye Jiao giggled. “Dad just looks older like this.”
“Well,” Ye Xiao scratched his head. He did intend to make himself look older because he was still in his early twenties, but hearing it from his daughter made him feel old. “Dad is just slightly older than you.”

“Dad is already 23,” Ye Jiao grinned.
Uh, he can’t fool his daughter. He should have hidden his real age from her in the past if he knew she would just blurt it out like that.
Ye Xiao sighed. “Let’s go.”
Grabbing her father’s hand, Ye Jiao nodded her head. The two of them walked in the forest as they headed to the city. Hearing the bustling talking people, Ye Jiao knitted her brow. She never liked the crowd because of their intense gaze that they directed at her.
Ye Xiao could sense his daughter’s body tense up. He was quite surprised because it was slightly earlier than usual. Usually, Ye Jiao would only start hearing when they were already near the city, but today, she heard it around half a meter earlier. The distance might not change much, but it meant that Ye Jiao’s sense grew keener.
‘Is it because she slept too much lately?’
Before Ye Xiao could ponder on the matter, he could feel Ye Jiao tugging at the hem of his clothes. “Dad, can you carry me?”
“Sure.”
Carefully, Ye Xiao picked his daughter up and let her stay in his embrace comfortably. He made sure that he covered her ear with one of his arms before continuing their walk. Rather than listening to the nonsenses these people spouted out, it would be better for her to not listen to anything.
The moment he entered the city from the gate, the guard glanced at him for a moment before letting him pass. They already knew that Ye Xiao lived on the outskirts, not far from the gate of the city. Although this man could stay inside the city, he preferred to stay outside the city.
“That man has come again,” a man remarked when he saw Ye Xiao entered the city. “He doesn’t look like he’s here to sell animal’s body again.”
“Maybe it’s for the school. Children below the age of 12 and above the age of six will receive basic education in the schools in this city.”
The man sneered. “Heh, that trash wants to study? Dream on!”
“Yeah, the school is not a place for trashes like that girl to study.”
“Tsk, it’s really a shame that a genius like him has a pitiful descendant like that. It seems that the Heaven hates him so much.”
Ye Xiao ignored the chatter around him. Ever since Ye Jiao’s birth, he has been surrounded by this kind of noises no matter where he went. Those who flattered him from head to toe in the past turned their back and taunted him with their words. They would only suck up to the strong and trample on the weak.
To these kinds of people, Ye Xiao didn’t care in the slightest.
He didn’t want to waste his time with them, so he used their mocking to train his temper. Even though he is already a father, he is still considered to be young. Normal people his age would still be fooling around and training their body to the fullest.
At this time, Ye Jiao moved her small hand and gripped her father’s hand. Her firm movement seemed to tell her father that she was fine and he shouldn’t be too concerned in the matter.
‘Yeah. They’re the real trash and not you,’ Ye Xiao smiled in his mind as he continued to walk in an unhurried pace.

The Good Crash: An Oral History of the Post-Scarcity Collapse
"Don't we all feel, deep down, that we deserve the apocalypse?" APRIL, 2028—Global capitalism has collapsed. America has sealed itself off from the outside world, and inside its borders, a revolution rages. All it took was one incredible little machine. That machine turned into two, then four, then eight... like a virus, the replicators spread. As a work of oral history, The Good Crash features over 50 interviews with key witnesses to the events of 2027. The text is rendered in the words used by the interviewees themselves, with light editing for clarity and concision. As such, the book contains language and themes that are not appropriate for children.By capturing the voices to the people at the very root of the revolution, journalist and historian R. Vondersnitch has traced the origins and aftermath of the replicators' rapid spread. Crucially, the book also includes perspectives and testimony from those who attempted to stop the spread of the reps. "Some of these are heroes, too, in their own ways," the author writes in the book's introductory note.
