《The Protection Details Choice - Protection Detail Series Book #1》Chapter 30

Breanna sighed, watching the flickering screens in the tech room. No matter where they looked, no one could locate Darcia. It was as if the gas inhaled was like a homing beacon or something that blocked Darcia's location from her senses … or her brain. Shaking her head, Breanna sighed. She was probably paranoid, but she couldn't shake the feeling; something was wrong.

"Anything?" Breanna asked.

"Not yet," Calla called, "I'll let you know when I do."

Nodding, Breanna left the room, needing to get away from the buzz and clear her head. Since waking up, it felt as though she was wired tighter than a spring. The last time she remembered feeling like this... her stride faltered. The memories flooding in. The white sterile corridor. The moans of people who had just been put through procedures. Her chest felt tight as she strode down the passageway, much like she was right … now.

Walking into the infirmary, Breanna searched for Rose, the only one who could genuinely help her. Would she do what was asked?

"Rose," Breanna whispered, "could you please do something for me?"

"Depends," Rose said, looking at her askance, "I don't want to do anything that may jeopardise someone else."

"What?" Breanna frowned.

"Is it legal?" Rose stared her down.

"I'm hoping so," Breanna sighed, "its more along the lines of life-saving."

"It's with you," Rose said, "you think something may be in your chest."

"How do you know that?" Breanna narrowed her eyes on the woman.

"Iris is plugged into Cara's talent," Rose shrugged, "which means we all are."

"That must be so cool," Breanna nodded, "but you are right. Since I've come back, I feel all tight and irritated. The last time I felt like this was after a procedure in Darcia's hell hole."

"Then let's have a look," Rose said, looking around the laboratory, "if there is something there, it may need to be removed."

"Then remove it," Breanna said, her expression serious enough for Rose to understand permission was granted.

"I'll do my best," Rose said, walking toward the back of the infirmary.

Breanna followed, wondering if she could trust Rose, but the necessity was higher than her need for caution. She had to trust Rose with her life … and everyone else's.

"Where is Breanna?" Craig asked.

"She was here a while ago," Calla said, focusing on the current task, "I think she ended up with Rose in the infirmary."

"How do you know that?" Michael asked, "did she say that was where she was going?"

"No," Calla said, "Iris is plugged into Cara's talent."

"Do you know why she is there?" Craig asked.

"Something about a scan of her chest," Calla said absently, "I wasn't paying too much attention."

"That doesn't sound good," Craig said, "Mike, do you think there is something there?"

"Could be," Michael said, "if it was a genetic thing, then it could be an experiment specifically for Breanna."

"One thing I can definitely say," Calla said, "all the information stored from the second lab started coming through the moment Breanna left the room. She's like a walking signal jammer."

"Thanks," Michael said, pulling Craig to one side, "maybe there was something in the gas that filled her lungs."

"I wouldn't put it past Darcia to do something like this," Craig muttered, "let's see the results."

"One way to find out," Michael frowned, pushing his hands into his pants pockets.

Leaving the room, the two men moved quickly toward the infirmary. A small cluster of people near the back of the infirmary caught their attention.

"What is going on here?" Craig muttered, moving toward the group.

"... it's a small device that was attached to the lung muscle," they heard Fiona saying, "I may be able to target it and fry it, but I don't want to risk her life."

"I can stabilise her lung while you do what is necessary," Rose said, "we need to get that frequency to die. It's messing with her emotions and brainwaves."

"Whatever is going to be done has to be done quickly," Hana said, "her life depends on it."

"What is going on here?" Michael said, stopping next to the table, "why is my sister unconscious?"

"She wanted an x-ray of her chest," Rose said quietly, "she was concerned something had happened to her in Darcia's lab."

"Rose contacted us when Breanna came out of the x-ray tube like this," Hana continued, "Fiona was able to pick up a small device which is attached to Breanna's lung. The x-ray verified it."

"It wasn't there when she arrived," Fiona said, shaking her head.

"How did it get in there?" Craig asked, frowning.

"We can deduce the components were in the gas which targeted Breanna," Fiona said. "I can isolate the device and fry it, but it may cause harm to Breanna."

"Do it," Craig said, "she will recover."

"You sound very sure," Hana said.

"I am," Craig nodded.

"Okay," Fiona said, looking from Hana to Rose, "let's do this."

Warmth and sun-filled the air. The sweet breeze scuttled leaves along the path Breanna walked. Colours filled each space while real peace filled the air. The sound of distant voices could be heard. Curious, Breanna walked toward them. But could never find the people who were talking. A sigh slipped from Breanna's lips as the voices came closer.

"What do you mean they are not considering postponing?" Breanna heard the question as she left the garden path, moving toward the voices in the trees.

"I'm telling you I tried everything," Michael said, "no one will listen or budge on the decision."

"Who won't budge?" Breanna's voice croaked.

Silence met her question. She heard the sound of feet on the ground nearby.

"She's finally awake," Craig muttered, "it takes us to argue about the World Summit to wake her up."

"Well, she was always a nosy little sister," Michael chuckled.

"When you are done with the kid sister stuff, will someone please tell me what is happening with the World Summit," Breanna peeled her heavy eyes open, "Where am I?"

"You're in the infirmary," Craig said. "You came in here asking for Rose's help. She x-rayed your chest, and you came out of the tube unconscious," he sighed. "Fiona, Rose and Hana had to work in tandem to get rid of the small device attached to your lung while keeping you stabilised."

"What device?" Breanna frowned, "why didn't I know about it?"

"I think you suspected," Michael said, "otherwise you wouldn't have asked Rose to have a look."

"The good news is the device has been deactivated," Craig smiled, "the bad news is ... even though Michael attempted to stop the meeting, the World Summit is not postponed."

"Dammit," Breanna muttered, "Darcia is still out there. Their security protocols and measures will not be enough to withstand anything thrown at them."

"I told them," Michael said, "they came back with a solution to the security issue ..." Michael cleared his throat, "we are to run security."

"What?" Breanna stammered, looking at both brothers. "I would sit up, but it feels like an elephant is sitting on my chest."

"Hana," Craig called, "she can feel the elephant."

Hana appeared next to Breanna, "Good to see you're awake and with us. A moment you'll be able to breathe properly," Hana placed her hands over Breanna's chest, closing her eyes and hesitating before opening them, smiling. "You should be okay in a moment."

Breanna inhaled, "What did you do?"

"I had to restrict the lung movement for your body to heal that area," Hana said, "I described it as if an elephant was sitting on your chest."

"Now that makes more sense," Breanna said, pushing up into a sitting position. "Tell me what they mean about us doing security for the World Summit," Breanna looking at Michael before looking back at Hana, "thank you."

Hana nodded before returning to her previous task. Michael sighed.

"David, Craig and yourself," he shifted, "you three are to head up Security."

"There is something else, though," Craig said. "It goes ahead with an addition. A preliminary meeting," Craig nodded, "yes, we are to provide security for that meeting."

"How did we land to be security detail?" Breanna asked.

"Since the company assigned cannot be trusted to not be infiltrated," Michael muttered.

"Okay," Breanna nodded, "let's get ourselves together and make sure no one takes out the key players."
