《An Enchanter's Tale》Chapter 29 – Fishing Lessons

“Where are we going?” Elizabeth asks as she watches Siyu begin to walk forward.
“We’re going to look for traces of him deeper in the city,” Siyu responds.
Elizabeth frowns with annoyance. “Why do you always lead the way like that?” She asks, her voice raised a little higher.
“I don’t know what you mean. Lead like what?” Siyu responds, looking behind to raise an eyebrow.
“Like that! Like we should just blindly follow! No reasons, no explanation; just come kids, this way. It’s super pretentious!” Elizabeth says, continuing to follow from behind.
Frey chuckles at Siyu’s side. “I don’t think he was raised any better.” He says in a teasing tone.
“I just go where the road leads. Most of the time, I have no idea where I’m going.” Siyu says in response, chuckling at the idea.
“Well at least explain why you think we should be going this way,” Elizabeth says with some disgruntlement.
“I’m not sure.” Siyu answers. “I just assume I’ll find a demon deeper in the city, so that’s where I’m going.” He says.
Elizabeth throws up her hands in exasperation before dropping them with reluctant acceptance. “Why are men like this? You’re hopeless!” She responds with a shake of her head.
...
…
Siyu lead the way to an alley. “He was here.” He saya, before going in deeper and making a turn. “Then he left.” He says again.
Elizabeth looks to Frey as if looking for someone who would understand her. “Am I wrong?” She asks with her arms crossed.
“Don’t look at me,” Frey responds, avoiding eye contact.
Siyu continues to move forward and turn at a tree on the intersection. He looks ahead, down the road to see the entrance to the city before stopping. “He already left. He’s out of the city. Ugh.” Siyu says with a grunt before sighing.

“Can you stop sighing?” Elizabeth asks on Siyu’s side. “It’s getting annoying. And what happened to he was deeper in the city? Hmm?” She asks like a disapproving mother.
Siyu looks to Frey with a look of helplessness.
“I said don’t look at me,” Frey says with his hands raised and a turn of his head.
…
…
“What’s the next step, Mr. Divinator,” Elizabeth asks once they had arrived back at the inn.
“I thought I explained this. I’m not a divinator. My cultivation path is of the enchantment class.” He answers. “As for the next step. I think it’s time I start fishing.” He says with a sigh.
Elizabeth sharply raises her hand. “What did I say?” Elizabeth asks.
Whatever left of the sigh quickly escapes. “Sorry.” Siyu responds before following with, “I’m working on it.”
“What are we fishing?” Frey asks. “Don’t tell me it’s actually fish.” He says, his interest already fading.
“Of course it’s fish! It’s a skill that everyone should have, and there’s a river that flows near the city. We just need the right gear.” He responds with a grin.
…
…
“Two silver for a rod.” The man says. “And if you want lessons; that’s extra.” He continues to explain.
“Is it too much trouble to get our lessons at the river nearby?” Siyu asks, his gaze on the fishing rods.
“No problem. But you’ll have to pay for lunch.” He responds.
…
…
“Fishing is an art. You need the right location, the patience, and the right attitude. Once you have that; the rest just comes naturally.” The fisherman says, leading them to the river bank.
“Tell me young man; what are you fishing for today?” The fisherman asks.

“What’s the difference? Fish are fish.” Frey responds.
The fisherman chuckles. “Young man, people can only fish for one thing at a time. As for what that is, only your heart can tell you. If you know what your heart is calling out for; fish will naturally find you.” He explains.
Frey looks to the fisherman for a moment before asking, “What if I’m not sure what my heart is calling out to?”
“That’s simple. Just ask it. There will naturally be something to lead you there.” The fisherman says.
“I know what I’m fishing for. Some wine and a juicy steak.” Siyu says with a rub of of stomach.
“No one asked you!” Elizabeth yells with annoyance.
…
…
Elizabeth and Frey sat at the bank and began to fish as the fisherman instructed while Siyu observed the scenery, looking for signs of the demon. He looks down at the river and catches a glimpse of something reflecting in the water. Then he looks up to a tree before following the branches with his eyes. Suddenly, his gaze is drawn to a bush where a leaf is smudged in a dark shade of red.
“I guess it really is about location.” Siyu says before moving towards the bush and away from the fishing site.
After moving further ahead, he sees more red marks, only for the marks to lead back to the river.
Siyu look across the river to the other bank and frowns.
“Maybe not.” He says, about to sigh, before stopping himself to look around for Elizabeth only to see no one around.
“She’ll have me at her beck and call by the time she’s done with me,” He says with a shake of his head.

Beast
A threat to the galaxy has come from another, and the Union of intelligent life will go to any length to stop it. Military Quarantine has held for hundreds of thousands of cycles. Traders, merchants, colonists, and Pirates live risky lives along the fringes as the politics from the inner systems fail to see the larger threats beyond their borders. A lone human finds himself far from home with no memories to how he arrived. A failing Trade vessel plays on a desperate gamble, while a malicious parasite searches for a suitable host. ............................................. Author's note: Beast is a story that I wrote a long, long time ago. Some of you might have read it then, back when it was posted on reddit over at r/HFY. It was my first webfiction and made in the spirit of that subreddit's "genre" of humanity being awesome. But, it is also a story that has bothered me a little bit. Just like most new writers tend to do, I made mistakes and errors that feel painful to reread. A Space Opera will be a Space Opera, but I had prose that makes present-me cringe. Still, at the same time, the story is still very much a tale I've never given up on. It was my first adventure into fiction: Beast was a crazy adventure with bodysnatching aliens, galactic war, threats from across the universe... Posting this story here is a way to try and redeem myself a bit. I won't call it a complete rewrite, because it's not, but I have wanted to go through and correct some of the major issues Beast has for a long time and put it somewhere more accessible to read (instead of as posts/comments on reddit) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. Additional corrections you might notice are welcome.

Leave Bad Enough Alone
Something has been amiss in the city’s theaters as of late. The local bards have long done a respectable job of keeping the audiences entertained, weaving high concepts with skillful performances. But lately, a new set of bards, and their illusionist cohorts, have captured the crowd’s attention. Compared to the theater’s usual fare, their work is hackneyed and poorly plotted, with unskilled acting, bad special effects, and unsatisfying resolutions. Worst of all, the audiences like their work more, and these upstarts are far more profitable than the city’s decent bards! Clearly, there must be some dark secret behind the success of these newcomers, and it’s up to the city’s true artists to find out what it is and expose the conspiracy! Or maybe the city’s bards have just become too hopelessly pretentious and derivative. It’s hard to tell. But investigate it they must! Failure is not an option! Victory, or...well, they’ll have to get day jobs or something. Original cover image generated by NightCafé.Master story list here.

An Average American in A High-school Academy Anime
An American versed in narrative tropes and more than mildly acquainted with anime wakes up in a completely different bed than the one he went to bed in. Now he has to scramble to understand where he is, what's going on, and hope to God he isn't in a relationship drama. I don't expect this to be good or well-received, but I have plenty of time this quarantine, so I'll try to get a chapter of 4000-10000 words out every one or two weeks. (haha) Please let me know how it can be improved. I'm an avid reader of fiction, but I've never really fallen down a rabbit hole so hard that I can name all tropes and settings and such by heart. I'm not sure if this will be effective satire, so I preemptively apologize. Inspired by: "My Life is Not a Manga, or maybe..." by EO Tenkey and "The Simulacrum" by Eganthale. Check them out if you want probably better stories than this one.
