《Pursuit of Life》Chapter 22: Hiking Up a Mountain
Advertisement
The child Lucius had gotten back and is now nursing his parents, who had just woken up, by giving them food and water.
His father voraciously ate the food with his remaining hand. While eating and drinking, tears streamed down his face, muttering his dead son’s name. He occasionally looked towards his family and his stumps for appendages, causing him to break down even more and wiping his tears with his greasy hands.
His mother did not speak and wore an empty expression the entire time. When Lucius brought the food to her mouth, she did not open it, and when Lucius was able to force the food inside her mouth, she did not chew it. He brought the water to her mouth, as well, but she did not bother drinking, causing Lucius to sigh, carrying a look of determination.
He asked for help from some of the able-bodied villagers, and they were able to feed her.
When they went back to rest again, mother simply lying down with an empty expression and father crying himself to sleep, Lucius made his way to Caelus’ house, which was rebuilt shoddily.
Delton and the older Lucius were simply resting and watching the shows that were projected onto the night sky.
Rubbing his stomach, Delton turned over to ask Lucius, “So I really don’t need to eat anything?”
Furrowing his eyebrows, Lucius did not bother to turn over and exclaimed, “Yes! How many times do you have to bother me and ask this?!”
“Even after two years, it still seems so weird not eating,” Delton chuckled, while rubbing the back of his head.
“Hmph. Get used to it. Once you reach a certain level, you don’t even have to eat in the physical world.”
After a couple minutes of watching, Delton turned over again to ask, “Can’t you conjure something up for me to eat, old man? If you could make Caelus, you could make anything. It could be something you like.”
Lucius’ bored expression turned to one of thoughtfulness, then into one of bashfulness. “To be honest. I haven’t eaten for al one time. I don’t even remember what’s delicious food.”
Delton, shocked, yelled out, “Are you kidding me?! There’s gotta be some extremely delicious food in your world, with all of these various creatures!”
“My sense of taste isn’t that good! Alright, tell me something to make then, since you’re so culinary gifted!”
Delton cupped his hand on his chin and after ruminating for a bit, he said, “Hmm. Are you familiar with potatoes?”
Lucius nodded, then Delton stopped for a moment, “Wait. Can you really conjure food up?”
Lucius waved his hand and a fist-sized potato showed up between the two of them. Delton started to give instructions, “Now, slice this paper thin, then fry them up with oil.”
Lucius waggled a finger, causing the potato to separate itself into around fifty thin slices. Hot oil appeared, bathing the potato slices. After being fried, crisp potato chips formed.
Delton, chuckling, then said, “Alright, now throw some salt on there, and that’s what we call potato chips. Cheap and simple junk food.”
Grabbing one of the potato chips, Lucius inspected it carefully. Biting into one, his eyes widened, as he slowly started eating the rest, one right after another.

Then his eyelids slightly lowered, as he took a lazed posture, watching the show. After eating the potato chips, another batch in a bowl formed between Delton and Lucius.
Delton looked over with a prideful sneer, while grabbing a handful of chips to munch on, “Good, right?”
“Yeah. It’s alright. Good snacking food.”
After going through multiple bowls, Lucius eyes snapped open and jolted upward, causing the chips to scatter all over the ground. “Fucking hell! Get down there right now and possess my younger self.”
Surprised, Delton said, “Woah woah woah, old man. What’s going on?”
“This is an important part of my life. You need to get down there right now!”
Delton quickly floated over to the child Lucius, who had already arrived at Fortissimus’ house, and possessed him.
Most of the house was empty after sweeping clean all of the broken objects.
Fortissimus was also present. After looking at his son, who nodded at him, Fortissimus walked over to a small chest at the end of the room.
After opening it, a bright white light encompassed the slightly dim room. Fortissimus took out a stone tablet, which was emanating the white light.
He looked at his son again and asked, “Are you sure about this?”
Caelus nodded, “I believe in his conviction. I will personally train him. This will also be my penance.”
Fortissimus nodded, then handed the tablet to Lucius, who then immediately tipped over, crashing to the floor.
Looking at the tablet, Lucius shook his head, then looked back to Fortissimus and said, “I’m sorry, village head. I can’t understand this. Id on’t know how to read.”
Caelus face palmed, while Fortissimus shook his head. Fortissimus simply responded, “Here. Repeat after me and recite these words.
Humans have unlimited potential
Break past these limits destiny has set for you
Only then, can humanity further evolve
Strengthen an invincible body
Develop an infinite mind
Create a limitless soul
Cultivate an eternal life”
Repeating these words, Delton felt Lucius’ body, mind, and soul start to resonate with the letters. He then heard the sounds of various people, chanting these words in various different languages. However, he could still understand it.
From inside his body, cracks could be heard, much like the hatching of a baby bird.
Lucius’ body stood there, ears perked up to listen to the chants. The blood in his veins shone, making various sounds as his veins widened. Several of his bones creaked and cracked.
From his mind, along with Delton, several thoughts came.
Is there something much greater than oneself?
What’s the point? Isn’t there always something better than you?
Why do I feel held back? If it wasn’t for this shell I could reach even higher levels?
Limits? Am I destined to be stuck here forever?
From Lucius’ body, a purple sphere came out and seemed to be staring at the stele on his hands. The sphere was allured by the stele and went into it.
Delton’s soul experienced a baptism, too. His soul body projected itself outside of the younger Lucius’ body and was also drawn into the tablet.
After making several revolutions around the tablet, he was forced into it.
Having entered the tablet, he opened his eyes to see a golden splendor. It was a land filled with mountains as far as the eye can see. In fact when looking up, the skies were sundered by various mountain bodies. Looking up, Delton could not make out what’s beyond the peak, due to a gray mist covering it.

All the mountains were of several different colors. The one he was on was colored purple, as if made completely out of amethyst.
Feeling control coming back to him, Delon looked around and saw several human figures in the form of silhouettes hiking up the mountain.
“Humans have unlimited potential—“
“—Develop an infinite mind—“
All of them were chanting the words that was on the stele. The various chant spurred Delton to do the same, as he slowly hiked p the mountain they were on.
After a certain amount of time, he reached the peak. His soul was then bathed in this golden light, and the mist gradually cleared, revealing a disheveled and rotten wooden bridge connecting the peak of this mountain to the the base of the next mountain.
Seeing this, Delton snapped out of the daze and stopped himself from taking the next step to the bridge. He moved to the side, as the other silhouettes crossed the bridge, as if unfazed at the precariousness of it.
Suddenly, a crack was heard, as one of the wooden planks broke apart. One of the silhouettes fell down through the bridge with a scream.
On his knees, Delton crept towards the edge of the peak and looked down to simply see mist all the way down, as the scream echoed out. Cold sweat appeared on Delton’s forehead, but looking forward, he saw that most of the silhouettes simply ignored the scream and continued their journey up the bridge.
Not wanting to walk any further up, Delton turned back and went down the mountain, against the flow of all the other silhouettes.
Again, after an uncertain amount of time, he reached the base of the mountain. The base, like the other mountain, was connected to the peak of a lower mountain with a bridge. However, the bridge this time had withered to the point to being completely unusable.
Several silhouettes still tried to cross the bridge, but most of them fell off to their demise.
Seeing the withered and gray atmosphere creep up and clash directly with the purple splendor of the mountain, Delton backed away quickly. As another silhouette treaded onto the base, a small amount of the mountain cracked and fell downward into the mist.
Fearing for the end of his life, Delton ascended the mountain again. The others chanting spurred him again to restart chanting on his own. Reaching the peak once again, he was bathed with another stream of golden energy.
Feeling his body try to absorb as much of the energy as possible, his heart rate increased to its maximum capacity. However, it was still not enough.
Feeling slight changes into his body, he heard a slight *Ssss*. A vertical slit appeared on his forehead, as if someone had slice it, trying to peer into his brain.
Delton felt the slit and frowned, then looked around, and all he saw was the silhouettes of the the other figures, not able to see the changes happening to the other figures.
Ignoring the bridge in front of him, he walked back towards the base of the mountain and stopped at a steep cliff. Unlike earlier, a huge chunk of the base had crumbled apart. However, the bridge was still there.
Various silhouettes tried to jump from the edge of the bridge and onto the mountain. Most failed, and when someone succeeded, another chunk fell off.
Delton gritted his teeth and hiked back up slowly, this time forcing himself not to chant anything. Instead, he listened closely to the chants of the other silhouettes. Like the child Lucius, even though they were mostly in different languages, Delton could still understand them.
“—Break past these limits destiny has set for you . Only then, can humanity further evolve . Strengthen an invincible body.
Humans have unlimited potential—”
“Humans have unlimited potential . Break through the shackles imposed by our mortal shells . Sever the bonds that keep us weak—“
“—Create a limitless soul . Cultivate an eternal life . Understand the ideals . Reach Perfection—“
Delton became confused at the various chants as they did not conform to what the tablet originally had.
Thinking about the chant itself, Delton had a mischievous smile and said,
“Humans have unlimited potential
Stay within the limits fate has set for you
Only then, can humanity survive
Strengthen a stable body
Develop a calm mind
Create a harmonious soul
Cultivate for a stable life”
Orange light bathed his body, as Delton came to a daze and started to continue his chants. He continued to walk up the mountain, reciting the words in various different languages that did not exist in his world.
Having reached the peak, the orange light clashed with the golden light as they both entered in his body. Again, his heart rate increased to an alarming pace, so much so that his heart burst.
However, this did not snap him out of his daze. The orange and golden lights healed his body, allowing his body to continuously improve.
After absorbing for a while, the slit on his forehead opened, revealing a third dual-pupiled eye, one orange and one gold.
Outside in reality, Lucius was watching on his phone, when Delton’s heart rate spiked up randomly, causing several nurses to burst in at the noise.
Lucius squinted his eyes to see a faint and thin stream of golden and orange light from the night sky bear down onto Delton’s comatose body.
A young child’s voice sounded into his ears, “Child of Energy.”
Startled, Lucius unleashed his energy, causing the power to go out at the hospital, much to the horror of the various doctors and nurses.
He looked over his shoulders to see an young thin boy with a bald head and no eyebrows, accentuating an extremely pale skin. Due to the thin frame of his face, the bony face brought attention to his clear cyan eyes. However, the whites of his eyes, were instead deep black. The young boy wore an extremely loose white and blue striped bathrobe, which fluttered as he moved.
The child waved his hand to contain the outburst of energy that Lucius revealed. He then pouted, which combined with his bony features, made him look like a skeleton. He then floated on top of Delton, and pinched the two streams of golden and orange light, staring directly at Lucius. He then spoke, “Look what you’ve done. You’ve caused a lot of trouble for me, Child of Energy.”

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
