《The Tales of Hammerfall》Chapter 10 -- Training

Raph woke feeling refreshed after yesterday, the dungeon had given him some much needed experience. He got ready and heady straight over to Isaac’s Forge at first light. When he arrived he found Isaac already at work, the forge was blazing away.
“Good morning Isaac.” Raph said as he entered the workshop.
“Good morning Raphael,” Isaac said as he stopped what he was doing and turned to greet him.
“Today, I will teach you the basics of forging weapons.” Isaac continued. “Put your stuff down and grab that hammer.” He pointed at the workbench, where the training hammer was placed again.
Raph did as instructed but when he picked the hammer up he was surprised, it was heavy.
Isaac’s training hammer (medium) -- A hammer made by Isaac the ???, to test the resolve of an aspiring smith (medium mode: 200kg)
‘Oh, well that’s why it feels heavier.’ Raph looked in shock at the small tool in his hand.
“Come over here and watch,” Isaac instructed as he grabbed some metal tongs. Raph did as instructed and walked over to Isaac.
Isaac began with taking a molten ingot out of the forge that had been heating up, he placed it securely on the anvil. He then picked up his hammer that was twice the size of the one Raph was using. Raph couldn’t help but wonder how much that hammer of his weighed. Isaac began to swing and flatten out the iron, using two swings the iron was flat.
‘Holy shit. How strong is he?’ Raph thought as he watched. Isaac continued to hammer and shape what Raph could now see was a sword. It took him a few minutes to shape the blade before he quenched it in some liquid. He pulled it out and then smoothed the blade with his hammer, finally he added the handle and sharpened the blade on a whetstone.
Isaac placed the finished sword in front of Raph.
Basic Longsword (perfect) -- A longsword created for battle, forged by someone with incomparable skill.
‘Woah.’ Raph inspected the blade. Isaac went on to explain the entire process of forging a blade to Raph, including every little detail. This went on for a while, Isaac was demonstrating the processes of forging to Raph and he was following along with his own piece of iron. Eventually Raph managed to make a sword of his own, with some help from Isaac’s instruction.

Basic Longsword (average) -- A longsword created for battle, this sword is of average quality.
“Ah shit. Only average.” Raph said disappointed with the outcome.
Isaac looked on in amazement, even an average quality sword for someone's first time was exceptional.
“Right.” Isaac said as he snapped out of his contemplation. “We will stick with weapons for now, I will show you how to make an axe next.”
Isaac went on to repeat the same process he had used with the sword, first showing Raph how to do it with a demonstration. He then watched Raph as he tried to make one himself. These practices went on for the rest of the day, Isaac demonstrating how to make something and Raph copying him.
“Alright Raphael, you did good work today. By the way there's a spare room upstairs if you want to stay here for the next few days while we train.” Isaac said.
“Really? Thank you Isaac, I really appreciate that.” Raph said as he bid Isaac goodnight.
The next few days were much of the same; Isaac demonstrated a technique to forge a certain kind of weapon or tool, then Raph would copy him with Isaac’s guidance. By the end of it Raph managed to make a sword of good quality.
“Whew.” Raph exclaimed as he wiped the sweat off his forehead. “That was a long day.” he inspected the sword he had just finished.
Basic Longsword (good) -- A longsword created for battle, forged by a decent smith.
“Decent. What the hell?” Raph said. ‘Well at least it’s better than the first one.’
“Well done Raphael, you have done exceptionally well for an amatuer.” Isaac said as he patted Raph on the shoulder, “However, I will be gone for a few weeks so this will be all the training for a while.”
“You’re leaving?” Raph asked.
“Only for a few weeks, I have some business to take care of.” Isac explained. “Another thing Raphael, you are currently level 24, which means you will get your second class next level. Do you want to be a blacksmith class?”

“Uhm.” Raph hadn’t really thought about it until now. “I guess so, I have had a lot of fun the past few days.”
“Good, with your main class utilizing hammers the synergy should be quite impressive.” Isaac said. “I have a couple more things for you before you leave.”
Isaac left the workshop for a moment and then came back with a card in his hand.
“This.” Isaac explained. “Is your card to identify you as a blacksmith, I know you don't have your class yet but as you intend to take one I think it will be fine if I give you this early. If you didn't know already, there is a Blacksmith Guild on the other side of the city should you have any need to go there.”
Isaac then proceeded to hand Raph the card and a small ring. “The ring is a storage device, although rather small it should be plenty for now. Just focus on it and you will be able to access the space inside.”
Raph took the card and the ring, he did what Isaac said and focused on the ring. When he did so he saw a small space, about 2m3, and the space wasn't empty; there was a pair of hammers in there.
“To store things is much the same, focus on the ring and the object you want to store in there and it will move between the spaces.” Isaac said as the hammers in the ring appeared in Raph's hands.
“Ah. The last thing, some new hammers.”
Raph stared at the new pair of hammers. They were understated like all of the things he had seen Isaac make. A dark metal head and wooden handles that fit perfectly into Ralph's hands.
Raph's hammers of variable mass (unique) -- These hammers have the ability to change their mass from 100 to 1000kg, made by Isaac.
“Wow.” Raph was lost for words.
"Oh. Actually there is one more thing.” Isaac said as he took out a key. “This is for you, as my official apprentice, a key to this workshop for you to use.”
“Thank you Isaac, I really don’t know how I can repay you.” Raph said.
“Well you don’t have to Raphael, just become a better smith than I.” Isaac said with a warm smile.
“I somehow doubt that possibility.” Raph said.
It had been a long day and Isaac looked to be very busy so Raph let him be, he went up to the room he had been staying in over the last few days.
‘I should check my stats’ Raph thought.

He had made great progress over the last few days, including getting his Str. and End. over 100 points. He had even managed to get some points in Dex. which helped him balance his status a little.
‘So, first things first, I need to get that second class.’ Raph mused to himself what his plans were. ‘ I wonder what it will be? Maybe Blacksmith Apprentice? Or something like Forger? Anyway, I should find Clark tomorrow and get killing some monsters or something. I wonder if he’s found a monster to tame yet?’
‘Maybe I can also find Erwin so we can get his sword back from the Emerald Grotto, that goblin he ran into sounded formidable.’
So many thoughts were running through Raph's head, however because of the events today he was exhausted it wasn’t long before he drifted off. He dreamt of fighting epic creatures and adventuring all over his new world.

Old Riding Author Lunatic Asylum
Just off the A19, in the dark, incomprehensible lands known as Yorkshire, there lies a town. A town where shadow-silent alleys glint with the secret hunger of knives. Where blood soaks the chipboard window shutters of forsaken terraces stretching off into the night. Where the smog-choked air rattles with the depraved laughter echoing out from clubs that can only generously be described as post-apocalyptic. Well, that’s Middlesbrough. But down the A19 a bit (an impossibly long way down, actually) there lies another town: Raughnen, in the ancient, forgotten Old Riding. It is an equal match in muggery and thuggery alike. It also has magic spells and pointy wizard hats. And now, across the miles and across all sensibilities, a pretty nasty power (a magic one) calls out for its pretty nasty counterpart (a decidedly unmagic one): a proper sound Boro lad. Nothing good can come of it. This is a collection of one novella and four connected short stories: I. A Yorkshire Summoning II. Old Riding Day Trip (the novella) III. Heaven is a Parmo IV. Death on the 66 V. Death on the 257 In total, this comprises 34 chapters totalling around 35,000 words, so try not to worry. It will be over relatively quickly. There are three more short stories with more tenuous links to the core collection: Rush, Paper Round and Scenario 79: Sausage Fingers, all of which can be found in my collection Short Records of Misadventure. Reading these may allow you to make more sense of certain parts of the story, if any sense is to be made at all. NOTE: There are instances of prejudice and discrimination within these stories, including elements of sexism and ageism, which are purely the thoughts and actions of the characters involved and which certainly do not reflect my own views on these matters. ANOTHER NOTE; A WARNING, PERHAPS: This can get a bit weird. In less than 150 pages, we have four viewpoints, first and third person narratives, and a completely disjointed plot with lots of gaps, dead ends and no real resolution. Also ZERO lunatic asylums. It's all a bit odd. If that sort of thing isn't your cup of tea, which it most likely isn't, it might be best to move on now.
