Chapter 1: Purpose

Jun gazed at the skies. The greyish clouds casted a gloomy illumination upon the earth, filling it with melancholy. ‘Will it rain?’, he wondered.

Jun had lived his life in the ‘ifs’, ‘buts’ and ‘could haves’. A boy with potential aplenty, but no motivation or drive to act on it.

A crackle of thunder entered his ears. Oddly enough, it didn’t seem to come from the sky, but rather the alleyway Jun had just sauntered past. He turned his head towards the source. His eyes met the end of the small alley. Jun knew that whatever made the sound was right around the corner. ‘An electrical fault, maybe?’ was a possibility he considered. Usually, in these situations, Jun would be a passerby; a mind-your-own-business type of person. But this felt unusual to him, a cause worth exploring. Was it a gut feeling? A calling from a higher power? He could not pinpoint the reason why. He needed answers. Jun took a deep breath, and stepped into the alleyway.

“Get out! It’s not safe here!” The suit-clad man warned as Jun reached the T-junction of the alleyway.

To Jun, the man seemed about his age of twenty years, maybe slightly older. But his attention was drawn to the creature ahead of him. A large, pale arm, with an eye in its palm, returned his stare. Red ribbons of an unknown energy emanated from it. Before Jun could fully internalise what was happening, the arm lunged forward towards him. The man clasped his hands together, as the same red ribbons manifested.

“Charge Form: Volt.”

The ribbons shot forth from his arms with speed, transforming into bright sparks of electricity, piercing the eye of the creature with clinical precision. Although he still had many questions in his mind, at least he was now able to ascertain where the thunder came from.

The creature convulsed upon contact with the beam of electricity. Jun could faintly make out the silhouette of an object where its eye once was. The arm slumped over, lifeless. The man had emerged victorious.

“What...was that?” Jun uttered.

“Why didn’t you run? You nearly got yourself killed and jeopardised my task!” replied the man, ignoring his question.

Jun pressed on, curiosity bursting at the seams. With much reluctance and a defeated sigh, the man caved in.

“That was a riftwalker. An otherworldly being. And my job is to terminate-”

Before he could finish his sentence, a fissure opened from the concrete floor. Rising from it was another pale creature.

Dread was the only feeling Jun could feel at that moment, as if the Grim Reaper had appeared before his eyes. It had a humanoid structure, but nothing on its face. Yet, Jun felt an overwhelming leer directed at him. He could immediately tell it was magnitudes stronger than the previous one. There was only one thing on his mind; turn around and run.

As he swiveled around, Jun felt a pain in his stomach. He glanced downwards, only to see a spike protruding from his abdomen. The riftwalker, within a blink of an eye, had already begun its attack.
