《That Small Library by Dover Street》9. Visitor

He got new people waltzing into the library. Mostly children that he had to supervise to keep them from wrecking the place, or some curious adults that were probably wondering what a library was doing nestled between an apartment complex and a cafe. Most of the visitors didn't return for a second look, though.
Well, except for her, but by now he realized that there was something probably wrong with her.
Today was just another ordinary day, at least for him. She wasn't getting out of work for a few more hours, and there was a new visitor strolling in through the front doors and ringing the bell. Time to plaster on a friendly smile... even if they most likely couldn't see it, what with him being stuck trawling through the library's catalogs again.
"Greetings." He calls out, eyes still focused on the monitor even as he pulled out a clipboard and began writing down the missing books. He'll have to track them down later using the database, but they were probably off being borrowed by a few people... Hopefully. "Take a look around. If you're planning on borrowing a few books, then I'll have you fill out a library card."
"Ah..." The visitor trails off, causing him to glance towards them. The visitor scratches her cheek, eyes glancing about the aisles before turning to face him once more. "I'm just taking a look around."
He nods, turning back towards his work and finishing up the list. With a light hum playing across his lips, he begins searching through the library's database and cross-checking the missing books to see if anyone had borrowed them. 'Fjords of Ash' was overdue for two weeks already, lent out to one Holden Martino...
"So!" He jolts, letting out a curse before wheeling back towards his visitor, finding her having put down a small stack of books on the counter. "Pretty small place you got here! You the only one managing this place?"

"I get some help from time to time." He replies in a genial tone, eyes still focused on the screen. "Monthly shipments from the central library to send some of their outgoing volumes here, some few cleaners that I pay to help me clean this place up from time to time... Most of the time though, it's just me. Doesn't really require a lot of daily upkeep to keep this place running."
The visitor hums, taking a stool and pushing her stack of books to the side, staring at him with a curious expression on her face. "I can imagine it gets boring."
He shrugs. "I've got books around me, and a quiet atmosphere. If I do get bored of it, then I'll just pop in a few videos on the internet and kill time that way."
"Sounds like someone I know." The visitor grins, causing him to roll his eyes even as they stood up from their seat. "I think I should introduce the two of you."
"No thanks." He sighed, massaging his shoulders while snatching his clipboard off the counter, "I've got enough to worry about on my plate."
"Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to go contact some people that have some overdue books." He grunts, fixing her a glare before waving at her. "And if you're not here to read, then you can very well fuck off."
The visitor watches as he passes through the door that led to his office, slamming it shut with more force than probably intended. The visitor huffs, placing their chin on top of the stack of books that they borrowed, before letting out a sigh.
"You know what?" She asks to no one. "She's right. You're an ass."
