《I Am The GUIDE》[Vol. 1] 0002: You Are Hired (2)

Chaos lightly pats his head before backing.
"If you want to, I will grant you the opportunity after you have done a good job."
Reece contemplated before asking.
"What do I do? Surely, it is not that difficult?"
"Revive the good and destroy the evil, it is that simple. Just guide those who could become powerful enough to be called heroes. There is quite a sum of people on your list."
"List?"
"Yes, I will give you a list so you do not need to worry."
Reece scratches his left cheek as he stares at Chaos.
"Hey, why was I chosen for the job?"
It's not like, he was someone special. To his family, maybe, but entirely not.
"I do not know the reason as well but my lord chose you."
A god pick him himself?
Reece tried to recall how and why he was picked. Is he special? Definitely not.
His entire life, he has been lazy and rarely left his home. There are tons of servants to do everything for him that he rarely moves. He was not particularly good either as he does not like near the poor.
In other words, Reece was your typical spoiled brat.
"I could not unearth something special in me, hmm."
Chaos laugh hearing that and said. "I do not either."
"What..."
How could he agree?
"At least let me think I was really special. Everyone loves the idea of being unique."
Reece was indeed assuming he was somewhat special. Who would not in this kind of situation? Everybody probably will assume to boot.
"I know that very well. Anyway, you will hear the details once you arrive."
However, Chaos seems to prefer to work fast as he did not give Reece enough time to adjust to these new developments and was quick to throw him away—not even explaining everything himself and throw the explaining to somebody else.
Reece at that moment has just confirmed that gods are damn lazy.
"Aah—Hold on!"
And even though he was still grieving, Chaos will directly send him to his first job. How could a god be this heartless!?
"Really, I don't want to… Hey! I am still talking!"
However, his body is gradually fading away and he felt very dizzy. He cannot do anything but panic.
"See you."
The sly fox waved at him goodbye.
"Ah, by the way, you are hired. Welcome."
"I refuse! I refuse! Fuck—listen!"
Slowly, Reece's voice and figure faded as he left the dark abyss and Chaos silently watch him disappear.
'That dirty cheat!'
Reece, who just woke up, found himself in an unfamiliar yet painfully familiar world.
He was hovering in the middle of a tree with unusually wide space inside a forest. He could hear the peaceful sounds of the birds chirping while relaxing around the tree where he was at.

"I have refused countless times, can't they find someone else? Geez..."
Reece sigh and messed his hair.
"Where the hell am I?"
Looking at it, it resembles the Earth where he was born and raised. However, something's wrong with the birds around him.
'Do, do birds have teeth... that sharp?'
Reece unconsciously started to retreat.
The birds flying and resting in the tree are pretty huge, and are way bigger than the ones from the Earth, with very sharp teeth and claws. Some of the birds even have blood and meat still stuck on their unusually large and visible teeth.
'Do they eat humans too...?'
He was a spirit though? But this place looks similar to a fantasy world, anything supernatural could happen.
As Reece retreated, he did not notice one bird behind him, the biggest one at that, and their bodies slam to one another.
Chirp!
"Aah!"
The dark bird chirp, startling the young Reece.
Reece quickly backed away into the center where he woke up. Though he might be a man, that doesn't mean he was tough. Certainly not. Reece was identified as a coward who turns pale at the sight of an earthworm and centipede.
Thankfully, the bird barely stares at him but did nothing. Furthermore, it seems like it was examining his body with its huge crimson hawk-like eyes before flying away. It is not the only one but the entirety of the birds flew away too, following the former.
"What...? Were they guarding me while I was asleep?"
A God sent him into this world, after all. It would be dangerous if he was left alone while he was asleep.
Reece scratched his head and stayed still. He looks down and began to examine his body and it still looks the same as when he was still alive. Though he was wearing something an angel would wear.
The only difference was he was transparent. He could see the trees and leaves past his body.
"Am I a ghost or a spirit? What is the difference anyway?"
What is the difference between a spirit and a ghost? Reece was not that intelligent as he stops going to school a year before his unfortunate death.
Anyhow, he was floating and transparent, although still clothed. In addition, he is capable of physical contact considering how he bumped into the bird moments ago, but that is all he knew.
Reece looks around.
That bastard god said he will hear the details once he arrives, however, who would inform him when he was alone in the middle of a forest? Who could he ask for information?
He tried to land so he could walk towards the branches to see what was down this tree but could not do so.
"What the hell?"

He was unable to walk.
'Hmm, but floating ain't that bad.'
Should he continue floating around like a ghost? He was a very lazy person who barely moves and does anything when he was alive.
"Aah, this feels nice."
Reece closes his arms and legs as he drifts towards the branches, looking down from above.
The tree where he woke up was the biggest and it was located in the middle. He could see nothing from where he was, only the scenery full of green and the mountains that surrounds the forest.
'Can I fly?'
He does not possess wings though. What if he falls once he steps out of the tree branches? Will he break a leg?
'Hmm, should I try?'
Reece extended his right leg into the air as he stares down where he would fall. He was planning on jumping, but somehow, he felt dizzy. He abruptly backs away.
It was the first time he realizes he was actually afraid of heights, even if he rode airplanes several times already.
[Welcome, Guide.]
"Eh?"
Reece flinched as he looks around but there was no one. However, the voice sounded so clear and near. Yes, it was a voice talking inside his head. A gentle voice belonging to a man.
"Who are you?"
[Greetings. I was appointed by the Lord to assist you.]
"By that rat? Cool... Are you a system?"
Is this not resembling reincarnation novels where the main character obtain a special system to make them stronger and level up? Reece becomes excited. He loves video games so maybe he could just treat this as one as well. It is not like, he desired to be there.
However, the voice's response has betrayed Reece's excitement.
[I am afraid not. I was merely a 'voice' specially designed to aid you in this journey by providing necessary information.]
"Oh, that is disappointing."
It was only a voice ringing in his head. Like an artificial intelligence but could do anything special.
"Well, I guess information is fine since I am not a very smart person."
Information, after all, is very essential, especially to Reece who is unfamiliar with this current world.
"Say, what do I call you? It is inappropriate to call you a 'voice' when you are to be my partner."
[I do not own one.]
"Is that so? I will just call you Daniel then."
Reece recalled his supposed twin brother who vanished in his mother's stomach in her 12th week of pregnancy without seeing the world with him. He was called Daniel by Reece himself although his twin did not develop. His twin still existed for a few months and they have been together although not long enough.
[... Accepted.]
'Did he just hesitated?'
Reece felt like the voice did.
"Anyway, what do I do now?"
[Do your job.]
'Hmm? Did he sounded impolite just now?'
[You could not reincarnate if you decline your duty.]
Strange enough, the voice talking in his head is not as monotonous as Reece first believed.
Unlike other AI's, this voice was blunt and sounds sarcastic. Reece thought it is better this way. Who would want an AI that only answers questions?
"Speaking of which, is there no way of reincarnating instead of becoming a guide? Do I really have to do it? Must it be me?"
[There is none. It must be you. And your duty must be achieved before you could rest in peace.]
"Oh, wow. After dying as a lazy young master, I was thrown away to do errands for the gods. When did I become so unlucky?"
Reece floats in a circle with both his arms and legs down. He feels weak knowing there is no other way but to accept the position.
"Tell me, where are we? This is not Earth, yes?"
[Correct. It is a different world, however, it is not named. This is the 'Fourth World' created by the Lord.]
Reece paused as he asks with wide eyes.
"Created? You mean, that scoundrel—ahem, god. Yes, God—is not just some lazy bastard ordering me around?"
[Exactly. He was the 'Original God' of all and you are his child.]
Accordingly, Reece was unfortunately picked by the god who created and gave birth to everything. Moreover, because he was a child of that man, he should do what his parents told him to do.
"... Should I be honored?"
[Naturally.]
The voice sounded so confident just now.
But should he really, after he was forced and is thrown away to a separate dimension without acknowledging his opinion? Even if that man was indirectly his parent, Reece still did not come out of his stomach and it did not raise him, did he? Now it goes around ordering people.
That is why Reece does not believe in any God. They did nothing but claimed they created the world and gave birth to humanity. However, why are those fully devoted to the Gods suffered most than those who not care?
Reece finds the concept of worshipping and praying to the Gods, not ideal for everybody.
"That is not really the case... No one wants to be forced."
The voice, no, Daniel, did not respond.
'Obviously, he won't acknowledge my useless bickering.'
Sighing, Reece decided to proceed to the main point—his job.
