《PERCEPTION (A New Begining)》38. 4015 days
Advertisement
It's already been 4015 days. Only 2555 more days and he'll be eighteen. You better get what you want out of him woman, because I'm not waiting a day more. I gave you what you want so enjoy it, I'll be coming to collect your life soon enough.
"T, the facility is just ahead... Are we really suppose to take them out."
"You're talking about the kids right?"
"T I don't know if I--"
I walk over putting my hand on his shoulder.
I knew he wouldn't be able to do it. I planned on this anyways.
"Just send me in. You don't have to go."
"No, I can't make you do it alone?"
"I told you before, it doesn't bother me."
"How... how can it not bother you?"
"Hahaha" I slap him on the back of the head, "You think I'm just saying it to make you feel better? I'll let you in on a little secret, it's because I'm not like you. I enjoy it. Think any different of me now?"
"No, I would never, you've done so much for me. I just... is it because of your ability?"
"Your too loyal Jumper, too kind. I used to tell myself that it was but the truth is it's just who I am. So don't worry about me, alright?"
"Even if you say that, I can't let you do this without something in return."
"A favor it is, I'll let you know when I want to cash it in."
"Just a favor isn't enough!"
I put my hand on his shoulder, gripping it tightly, "It isn't going to be just any favor. If we survive this then I'll tell you. Got that, you've got to survive okay."
"Alright T, I'll do my best, but, are you sure you can take out the facility by yourself?"
"Jumper, stop worrying. It's a smaller one as far as they go. Just leave it to me. Jump me."
I'm now standing on the facility's roof, my hand that was on his shoulder holding only air now.
"God that feels weird, no matter how much I do it."

"You alright T?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just takes a second to adjust. Turn off your radio Jumper."
"T if I do that--"
"Jumper, I'll only say it one more time. Turn off your radio!"
"Okay T, Jumper out."
No point in him not coming along if he's able to hear their screams. He'd probably end up like the last guy.
After making my way in I prepare.
The kids here shouldn't be too strong, the only problem is I don't know any of their abilities. The solution? Take them out before they can use them.
That is easier said than done, but that's why they sent me after all.
I take in a deep breath. Exhale--
Click.
"(Attention, someone has entered the facility. All available agent's report to area C15)"
"(Attention, someone has entered the facility. All available agent's report to area C15)"
"(Attention, someone has entered the facility. All available agent's report to area C15)"
"Who...who are you? You don't look like an agent--"
Boom.
I didn't know you could manifest an ability that young.
"(Screams), what did you do to hi--"
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Haven't missed one yet!
"I've got the intruder over here!"
Oh my, so many lines coming out of that gun, it must be automatic.
I bring up my forearms blocking the lines that touch me, a second later the bullets ricochet off the metal cuffs on my forearm.
I put the line coming from the end of my barrel to his head. My bullet goes through his right eye and out the back. I get two more kids who were running down the hall behind him.
A teenage looking boy runs out from behind a wall and points his hand at me.
No line? Then this is something I haven't seen before.
"You get one shot kid, make it count."
Fire begins to form around his hand and a line appears, "Never mind" Boom, "I've seen it before."
"Stop please!"
Boom.
"Why are you--"
Boom.
"Stay behind me I'll pro--"
Boom.
"Surround him! He can't stop--"
Boom.
Out of bullets already? I brought four clips! Guess I'm been having so much fun I lost count.

I grab the knife off my thigh and continue.
A six-foot, maybe seven-foot guy comes out of a room, kicking his door off the hinges to make his entrance.
He's bigger than any man I've seen but his face is that of a child.
"It's your lucky day, I just ran out of bullets so--" He swings his arm at me, missing and cracking the wall, "Right to it big fella, I like it."
Lines sprout out from his hands.
Just going to throw punches I guess, make sense, being that big he wouldn't have to know how to fight to survive. I stay out of all the line paths, slipping every punch. After he looks like he's starting to slow down I sidestep an attempted grab and toss my knife. He falls to the floor, the sound of him choking on his own blood echoing through the halls.
"I wouldn't recommend--" He pulls the knife out of his throat and throws it at me, I put my hand out to its line, grabbing the knife out of the air. "I tried to warn you! If you pull it out you'll only bleed faster--haha--god damn that's a lot of blood."
I walk around the facility for a while, finding the occasional sniveling kid hiding under his bed or behind a door. Honestly, you think if your life is on the line you would pick a better hiding spot. "IS THAT EVERYBODY?"
Where is the head of this place? Did they jump ship when I first arrived?
Thump, thump, thump.
The sound of someone heavy walking in boots came from around the corner, very, slowly.
There he is!
"T!"
"I'm here."
"Why now?"
"When really wasn't my decision."
"Your working for someone? I feel bad for whoever thinks you're on their side."
"Yeah well, don't tell them that."
"If your just here to kill me why do this?"
"You still have to do your job when you're playing someone. Or else your not good at the game."
"Is this just a game to you? All these dead children and it's a game!"
He steps around the corner and we're now facing each other.
"No, it's not just a game. I have to get rid of anyone who might come after me, and I only have seven years left."
"You think you can kill all of us by then? Crazy as always. Let's say you managed to, why? What happens after you kill us all? The game will be over for you then."
"I told you it's not a game to me. Once the time is up I get the only thing in this world I care about back."
"It wasn't enough what you did? Now you have to kill us all because of the consequences of what you did!"
"Yes."
"Can you still see my line?"
"You know once I see something I never lose its line."
"Are you sure about that?"
He pulls out two small machineguns from under each arm. Lines pop up everywhere.
Trying to overwhelm me with too many lines at once, I guess if I explained my ability to someone, they would think a countermeasure like this would work. Too bad for you, all the lines aren't the same.
I weave through the bullets. The ones I'm unable to dodge I make sure hit the metal I have placed all around my body. It doesn't take long before I see his line.
I dive into a room, turning mid-air, and throw my knife to where I was just standing. He appears there, my knife stabbing his side.
He drops to his knees realizing he has lost. I walk up and grab one of the guns he dropped.
"Please, T would you--"
Boom.
"T, I see you on the roof, did you finish."
"Yes."
"Are you going to tell me the favor now?"
As eager as ever, "You not going to come and get me until I do?"
"No, T, I didn't mean--"
"Relax, I just need you to deliver a letter to someone."
"That's it?"
"And keep an eye on them. I don't want to know anything about them." That would only make it harder to get through the seven years left, "I just need you to keep an eye on her until I tell you."

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
