《Lucid Dream》Chapter 8: Stress is the killer of common sense!

Had I mentioned I hate studying?
Fighting mutants was not as tiring as sitting in a classroom 4 hours a day, listening to dry lesson, trying to socialise and failed miserably.
"Hey, why the long face?" Asked a classmate whose name I totally forgot.
"I'm just bored, you know we've already learnt this from highschool, right?" I replied with a strained smile.
"Who even focused on English classes in highschool dude." Well, I did. "By the way, we had a party tonight, everyone in class are participating, wanna join?"
"I'm afraid I can't. Work stuff." I lied, although I did have to look after the two little bundles of joy at home.
"Oh you working already? Cool dude, what are you doing? Is the pay good?" He kept pressing with even more question.
"It's just a part-time baby sitting job, about 10 mil a month." Arghhh, socialising-the bane of my existence.
"Wow, single parent at such a young age eh? What's the matter? Pull out too late?" He joked lightheartedly.
I laughed along at the crude joke.
"Anyway, there is this girl who ask me to invite you specificly. She seems to be very interested in you. Sure you don't wanna go?" He dropped the bomb, which hit me like an Exxxxplosionnnn to the face.
Me? Someone was interested in the average, anti-social, and slightly boomer me?
"Fuck yeah, of course I will go. I would crawl there if I had to." I shouted my thought out loud, startling everyone in class. The professor glared at me with a weird expression.
"Awesome, 7pm at XXX, YYY. See you there." He waved at me and went back to his friends.
I was sure the kids can behave for an evening.
----
It turned out the place was a high class restaurant where I had no right to be.
I donned my most presentable outfit I owned and I still felt out of place with everyone decked out in vests and gowns. Expensive cars laying around liked common Nissan.
Damn, I should have expected this, all of my classmates were second generation young masters.
It was a pity I wrecked second uncle car, now he won't ever let me near his collection.

Fuck it. I channeled my badass, top of the food chain mutant side and strolled in like I own the place.
As soon as I stepped into the lobby, I noticed my classmate whose name I still didn't know. He waved at me, so I steeled myself and walked in.
"Yo, we were just talking about you. This is Hannah Nguyen, an international student transfered to our school last Friday. Today party is to welcome her." He said. I looked at the introduced girl. She had the Westerner facial features, but also carried that distinctively Asian look, black silky hair that reached her waist, big obsidian eyes, high nose, oval face. In short, a dead gorgeous beauty.
I stared dumbly for a second but quickly catch myself.
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance." I reached out for a handshake, but I soon freezed like a statue when the girl suddenly hugged me.
"I'm so glad I met you again. Thank you for that time. You saved my life." She chirped happily, while shaking me like a particularly stubborn bamboo.
Wait wut? When? Where? How? The fuck?
"Ahem, I will let you two alone then." The one whose name I still did not know winked at me then left like a boss.
"Let's find somewhere quiet and discuss this in detail." I managed to come out of my stupor and offered in fear of undesired ears nearby. Whatever involved saving life was definitely mutant bussiness.
"Sure!" She agreed enthusiastically.
We asked the receptionist for a private room reserved for bussiness negotiation. Turned out, I really owned this place, well, my second uncle did. The staff recognised me as soon as I walked through the door.
"Please elaborate. What do you mean I saved your life." I asked, dreading the answer.
"You know, that time at the parking lot. I was taking a selfie when some guys tied me up and locked me in an abandon store. I was so scared, I thought I was being kidnaped. I heard gunshots, and explosions. I thought I was gonna die. I didn't wanna die so I tried to escape. I was crawling my way to the storefront when I saw you demolished those bad guys. You looked so cool that I fainted from excitement." She narrated some action movie that I had no idea what she was talking about. Nope, not a clue. Not that one time I forgot to turn on my concealment special effect.

Hahh, who was I kidding? Wake up my son! Escaping reality was capital offense.
So as my inner logic instructed. I pulled out three cigarettes, holding them up like I would hold incense sticks and made three deep bows.
"Please oh mighty living saint, accpet this lesser one offering. Because only you thought of watching a gun fight instead of getting to safety." I prayed honestly.
Now you had the cheek to look embarrassed?
Jokes aside, this should be deal with carefully, or I may become famous tomorrow.
"Have you told anyone about this? Any recording of the incident?" I inquired cautiously.
"No, I did not tell anyone, but can I keep the vlog? Please?" She admitted. Well, at least she was honest.
"No." I replied sternly with no room for arguments.
"I promise I won't put it on social media, pretty please." She begged. I kinda wavered a bit from her puppy look, but impossible was impossible.
"No, that video may endangered me and you at the same time. Do you realise how unprotected our data are?" That's why I deal with anything from the underside with my trusty Legendary Nokia.
"I use VPN?" She tried one last time. Her effort landed nose first on my unflinching face. "Alright, I will delete it with one condition."
I motioned her to go on.
"I want to learn how to fight like that." She declared with sparkles in her eyes.
I facepalmed so hard it might as well sent me back in time and slapped my stupid self for not using protection. Wait, that came out wrong.
"I cannot teach you anything." Of course I can't. None of my skill came from learning.
"Then..." before she finished her sentence, I hold up my other palm in the universal sign to stop.
"But I can recommend someone who can, and you have my word that the effect is much better than that time. If you can preserve of course." I continued.
It was a bit of a dick move, but I already had two lump of trouble at home. I can not afford another. So the only logical solution left was to dump it to someone else. Marcus seemed like a good candidate. He was so free to go all the way from Central Europe to South East Asia for a bar fight afterall.
"But why would you want to learn how to fight? Don't get me wrong, but you look everybit like a pampered princess who haven't gotten into trouble a day in her life. Don't tell me it looks cool, because that's a bullshit reason." I asked befuddledly. Her meek expression told me I was right.
"I like travelling, I want to go everywhere in the world. However, I want to do that my way, and having a bunch of bodyguards surround you 24/7 is not the kind I'm looking for. And I don't want to end up like last time either. Unless..."
"Unless you can kick everybody asses." I finished for her. That was a motivation I can accept, a bit loony but understandable.
"Your instructor will be very harsh. His methods are almost impossible for normal people. Feel free to quit whenever you like." He was the prince of the Werebeast. Normies will give up within 10 minutes under the kind of education he had to go through since young.
"I won't." She said determinedly.
We will see.
----
The party was mostly a pain in the ass. I was the focus of attention because the new school bella stuck to me like Elephant Superglue.
I was bombarded with all kind of questions, stretching my social skill to the limit. And in a stress induced daze I somehow paid the whole bill, throwing my middle class imagine through the window. In short, I became famous overnight, which was something I tried to avoid all this time.
Not only I got cat-fished, I also created a bunch of problems for my future me to deal with. This day cannot get any worse, right?
Getting home to a burning building was the lowest it can get, right?

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
