《The Demon Child - Awakening》Chapter 77 - Split

"T-this power!!" The air around the king began to glow red. "The power of a spirit in my control!! Not like the vessel you are Dyestral, I am in control!! I am no host, as Agnus is only a source of fire now! FOR ME!!"
I looked deep into the king's soul and saw that his green soul was being overtaken, by the same colour as Agnus. I wasn't sure how, but I believed that he had killed a spirit, a feat thought impossible until now.
The king's lower body regenerated by flame. As two legs sprouted from the fire, the rest of the king's body was also covered with his heat. Azure and I dared not to move, as the aura the king was emitting, strong.
After the flames subsided, my eyes widened, as something I had not thought possible had just happened. All this time, my markings had evolved and appeared not too long ago, but somehow, markings had appeared on the king.
Unlike my markings, his were a dark crimson, shaped like diamonds, unlike the circles which were around my body. The lines which made up most of the markings were wavy and long like mine, but with a more natural look, not so jagged.
"Fire, these markings, like yours?" The king began to step down some steps. "Although unlike mine, yours seem to be more jagged and... confusing, I don't know where they go, tell me Dyestral Blutrot and Azure Seele, what element do you think my markings say," The king's markings on his right hand began to glow orange.
"Fire," Azure and I both said.
"Correct!!" Putting his right hand forward, a massive beam of fire came hurtling towards us.
We both expected this, and I went in front of Azure, kneeling and opening my hands as well. Creating a shield made of ice, as well as Azure covering that with blue flames, our defences grew stronger.

Not only were my markings related to demons, but also to spirits, as the king now had some by absorbing Agnus, but I couldn't think any longer. All my focus was on creating new ice which was growing ever smaller at a rapid pace.
I then recalled what the king said about my markings, so I smiled, as the ice in my hands, began to crackle with lightning. Azure seeing this sliced the ground and fell onto the floor below, as I began to look at the king.
My markings were jagged and unpredictable, something which I would use to my advantage. In one shot, I released a strong bolt of lightning, a tenth of all the energy I gathered in that cloud not too long ago, as I cut the fire in half, cleanly severing the king's right arm.
His gaze shifted towards his wounds, and I closed the distance in under a millisecond. The king saw me about to attack him, but he was too slow now. With pain-numbing his reactions, I was able to land a punch right through his left lung.
The force of the attack propelled him into the walls back outside, that would've ended the fight, if it was not for his spirit. I was able to have a conversation with Azure, one sentence.
"That lever," Both of our gazes shifted towards a massive chamber. It was even more extensive than the one containing Agnus, and something much more powerful resided in there, something I could feel. "When I return, open it,"
Azure nodded as I flew outside and straight down, to see that the king had already gotten up, now completely naked. As he saw me, I saw his two blades appear in his hands, as he propelled himself upwards through his flames.
I dodged his swords and began to fly right near the ground, seeing the carnage black dome had left. Demons and humans were fighting, blood spurting everywhere. Looking over the battlefield, I caught a glimpse of Sashal, as she caught a glimpse of me.

We both smiled as I went even faster in the air, the king right behind me. The force we were going at caused the surrounding area to be damaged due to the air pressure. I went even faster, passing the city gates, seeing Cynas beginning his assault.
Another three minute, the king followed me close to the ground before I stopped, but the king kept going. The air pressure that had built up created a massive shockwave, which hit the king and made him collide with a cliff, making the earthen building crumble.
He released a fire that burnt all of the debris and looked at me. As soon as the king with anger in my eyes, a feeling came out of me, filled with sadism. It wasn't direct, but the king began to create massive beams of fire, which strafed from side to side, I dodged the attacks before kicking him in the face and jumping off it into the air.
I flew farther away from the city, into a lush green forest, as the king began to follow right behind me, burning away the trees with the fire. This lush place, filled with life, wasn't even a battlefield; it was a stage, for my entertainment.
The king followed me around, as far as the eye could see, burning everything in sight. He couldn't hit me, emotions filled his attacks, making them a simple task to dodge, not even at my full speed.
"Dammit!! Take THIS!!" The king flung both of his swords into the air. They turned into an orange fire, which then became a sphere, multiplying in size. I opened my wings and flew high into the air, the ever-growing ball of heat following me.
It would just keep growing, and as it grew more prominent than a mountain, I nosedived into the ground, falling through it and smiling. I felt the impact of the attack; it pushed me deeper into the earth. The source of it covered the forest before I hit an underground lake.
Even hundreds of metres below ground, I could hear the king laugh. The water was so relaxing and cold as if it didn't want me to leave. I swam up to the surface, drinking some of the water before I began to fly through solid rock.
As soon as I hit the surface, I looked at the king's face again, all of his markings began to turn orange again before they dimmed a small bit. He used a lot of his spirit source on that attack, something which I had planned, to tire him out before the final part of the fight.
"You bastard why did you come out here!!" The king snapped at me.
"To show you why your reign is meant to end,"
I looked around, seeing that everything that was once here, water, trees animals, were all burnt to a crisp.
"This forest represents the country of Onsice, and look what you've done burnt it to the ground,"
"Well, I'll burn it even more, just so I can defeat the pain in my neck,"
"Very well then, I believe that should be enough time,"
"For what?"
"For you to destroy a famous landmark, and for me to tire you out,"
I opened my wings again, flinging a few dozen icicles at the king to distract him, before picking up speed and flying back to Onsice. The king yelled and began to fly after me, this time with much more distance between us.
Everything I had done for this mission led up to this point, a race between the two of us, to see who would get back faster, me, or the king?

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
