《The Demon Child - Awakening》Chapter 74 - Separate Flame

“Sup’ brother,” Azure smiled, walking closer to me.
“You see Dyestral, I also knew about Black Dome, and I decided to get my mercenaries,”
‘That impossible, how does the king know?’ I thought.
“I also have little birds, I knew about Azure, the only demon to ever, defeat you, so I hired him to protect me, the power to kill you for moments, it’s overpowering,”
“Your king has paid me a sum of money I couldn’t refuse, a fortune, but…” Flames began to envelop parts of my brother.
Azure walked up to the right of me, stepping over Rowan’s corpse and looking at the king. He pulled out a piece of yellow paper and began to read it.
“First rule: The mercenary will use all of his or her power to protect the buyer,”
“Exactly, so kill him,”
“Second Rule: The mercenary will put his life over the kings own,”
‘What are you doing?’ I thought. ‘Those two rules say you have to kill me,’
“The final rule,” Blue flames began to burn the paper. “The mercenary in his own will, can and will make decisions during a battle that will benefit the kingdom of Onsice the most, subclause: This overrides all other rules,”
The king’s eyes widened, his throne crumbled around him due to his aura. Azure got out a massive bag, which jingled with coins. Blue flames then covered his right hand, and he threw it back in the king’s face, just missing it and creating a crater in the wall behind him.
“You should’ve written it yourself your majesty; you said that birds whisper in your ear, but the problem is, that I am a devil, that makes a deal with those birds, you control them, but so do I,”

Azure smiled, looking at me, the mask he wore, the little eye sockets began to turn blue. As I looked at his right arm, I saw that his flames began to slow down.
“Dyestral, the king had done something,” Kirigaya said in my head.
“What do you mean?” I thought.
“I-I don’t know, he’s like me, somehow he has a spirit,”
“The spirit of this land, a spirit of fire if I remember, what is its name?”
“Agnus,
Looking behind the king, I saw countless numbers of tubes, all connected to him. The king pulled them off, as the air around him grew hot enough to boil water. Feeling this, Kirigaya spoke to me again.
“Agnus didn’t agree to this, he is being used, this power is his, but unlike a spirit, it’s out of control,” Kirigaya mentioned.
There was silence for a moment.
“A spirits source, now coursing through me, as a king I had the elements of water, air, and earth I could control, but now,” He lifted his massive swords and smashed them to the ground, causing the ground to explode around us.
Azure and I reacted before it could happen and we each opened our wings and flew through the sky, halfway between the broken ground and the roof. We looked at each other and nodded. In a second, Azure had used one of his flame tendrils to wrap around my left foot, flinging me towards the king.
I closed my wings, and I saw his face, intrigued by what was happening. The king readied his swords before he tried to slice me as I got close. I didn’t hit the king, I just went through him, into the lower rooms.
The king looked behind him, not seeing me through the walls, as well as a chain going through him. He looked back, and saw Azure, with a sword made of flame. Before he could protect himself, the blade had hit, and Azure and I both smiled.

As the king went through the walls, I saw his head still intact. The fight was not over. I let go of my chains and began to hover in the air, Azure soon following me. We both nodded at each other again and went closer to the barracks where our enemy had landed.
We hovered outside before the king jumped out and tried to slice us with his massive swords. Azure and I lengthened out tendrils and began to show another side of both of us, the side that loved a good fight.

Red Street Daybreak
August Samuel Hatch was born under an inauspicious pattern of stars. It's granted him what is widely considered the most unlucky of inconveniences: becoming host to a powerful but pernicious spirit that will act as his guide and protector--and one day end his life. Sairne is sworn to stand by August's side and, when the fancy strikes her, advise him, all in the service of atoning for a past life she can’t remember having committed a grave enough offense to earn her soul indentureship in the mortal realm. Bound by a celestial contract neither one can negotiate, their fates are all they've ever known. But in a city ruled by religious right and where magic runs deep as bedrock, their search for a missing friend leads them to a dark conspiracy that could transmute the very magic that binds them to their fates, and that might grant them the ultimate choice: do they save the city or save themselves? Cross-posted on Wattpad and Ao3. For fans of fantasy YA story beats if they starred adults instead, 1920s inspired setting, lots of banter, larger cast of characters, somewhat soft magic system. Completed, but being actively edited prior to posting! I'm the only captain on this ship, so mind any errors.
