《Bounty Cats》Book Three: Chapter 7

The next room has a grass field and a three-story-tall white house. Rei also spotted the holographic white rabbit, facing the front door.

“Here is your next task,” the Cheshire Cat whispered from a speaker. “The white rabbit needs his fan and gloves. They are somewhere inside his house."

Rei glanced up although she wasn't sure where the Cheshire Cat spoke from. "That's it? Are you telling me the answer?"

The Cheshire Cat chuckled. "You just need to find them inside the house. Hehehe."

Rei scanned the house through her cybernetic vision. There were gears and mechanical parts hidden inside the loose walls and ceilings. The entire house was full of them without furniture. Not even a toilet or appliances was inside the empty house.

What were the gears for, and why did the Cheshire Cat leave the house empty?

Rei spotted the fan and gloves in the attic, located on the top floor. Walking up to the attic might be the only way, which will be a cake walk. And there doesn't seem to be any traps Rei recognized.

She approached the door and pushed it open. She switched off her x-ray vision to see clearly.

The living room was indeed empty. On the walls, paintings of furniture decorated around Rei. Paintings of couches, a fireplace, and a coffee table with teacups stood near a sofa under a lamp sat near a bookshelf with untitled books.

Rei wondered if the Cheshire Cat couldn't afford to buy furniture to place inside the white rabbit's house. Or maybe he didn’t have enough time to finish building the house. At least the paintings weren't ugly like a kindergarten's art project.

After Rei stepped inside, the door slammed shut before her. The door clicked to lock, and the walls vibrated.

"Uh-oh!" The Cheshire Cat shouted. "Are you growing bigger, or is the house getting smaller?"

The ceiling slid down, slowly upon Rei. It looked like the entire room was shrinking. No wonder the house has gears behind the walls!

She dashed to the stairway inside a hallway. The walls drifted quickly as she ran up the steps.

The second floor has four rooms and one hallway, all painted white without decorations. Rei looked around, but she couldn't find another stairway to the attic.

The walls closed in on her, and the doors remained open. Rei checked one of the rooms, noticing their changing sizes. If she tried to take cover inside the rooms, the doors might close, locking her inside. Then the walls will crush her to death. No way she should take those chances.

"Hurry, Alice!" The Cheshire Cat shouted with amusement in his tone. "The white rabbit is growing impatient!"

Listening to him calling her Alice started to bug her. Her real name was Rei, and Rei should be her only name. But she has no time to complain about that.

She gazed at the ceiling and scanned it. Just above her head was a trap door with one doorknob.

Rei jumped, but her hand couldn't reach the knob. "Ttong!"

She gazed at the closing wall and smirked. She placed her feet on it and her hands on the other. Then she clambered up like a spider between the moving walls, reaching the attic doorway.

"Ne!" Rei pushed the door up and grabbed the edge.

She hustled through and pulled her tail up before the walls closed beneath the door.

Rei sighed, but she wasn't safe from danger yet.

The attic chamber was triangular, painted brown with a round glass window at the back. On the floor, the fan and two white gloves sat at the center, just waiting to be picked up.

When Rei rose, the left ceiling rumbled and moved down.

"Really!?" Rei didn’t have time to think.

She raced forward, snapping the three items off the wooden floor. Toward the window, Rei leaped headfirst through the glass, shattering it as she fell through. Perhaps a stupid move, but she whether take a leap of faith than slowly get smooshed by the ceiling.

Outside, Rei landed on her feet and her fists touched the grass. She would have landed on her head if she was human.

"Congratulations, you impressed the white rabbit," said the Cheshire Cat's voice.

Rei gazed at the house, still standing like before without any changes. Only the inside closed altogether, leaving no clear space. Rei would have turned into a pancake if she stayed inside that house.

"I don't understand that trap!" Rei exclaimed at the blue ceiling.

"In the book, Alice drank a bottle inside the white rabbit's house, increasing her size," the unsettling voice explained. "Are you sure you read the book? Hehehe."

Rei narrowed her eyes. "But why isn't there a bottle in there? You couldn't make me grow big?"

"If I could make you grow, your body would destroy my entire Wonderland. Even the park above will meet the same fate."

Rei raised her pointy ears up when she remembered something. "Is Mr.Dreams working with you?"

"How did you guess that?"

"He told Rally and me to come here so we can review his funhouse."

The Cheshire Cat chuckled. "I'll say he is in the same situation as you. If he doesn't help, I will reveal his dark secret to the entire world."

"What dark secret?"

The speaker clicked. "Shouldn't you be continuing your adventure in my Wonderland now, Alice? The White Rabbit is hopping away!"

Rei saw the hologram bouncing to a dark tunnel behind the house. For a fake rabbit, he hopped pretty fast.

"Remember, you must follow the White Rabbit, or else you will never escape from my Wonderland," the Cheshire Cat warned.

Rei sighed and sprinted into the dark tunnel. If she survives the next puzzle, she will get more answers from her captor.

So Mr.Dreams was in league with the Cheshire Cat. But why?

What kind of crime could the owner of Dreamland be hiding?
