《Bounty Cats》Book One: Chapter 21

Luna covered her ears while the gopher, Gael, was singing as he rowed the boat through the dark sewer tunnel. Rei didn’t have a problem with the gopher singing. She kind of enjoyed it a little. And it was rude to annoy someone singing for no reason.

Toot toot!

We're rowing down the river!

Toot toot!

We're rowing down the river!

Toot toot toot!

We're rowing down the river!

Toot toot toot!

We're going down the -

"Are we there yet!?" Luna shouted.

Gael gulped and pointed his brown claw ahead. "See that dock? Ssh! It will take you straight there. Ssh!"

Rei glanced ahead at the dark platform, stretching on the left side of the tunnel. "How do you know?"

"I escorted three goons who ordered me to bring there. Sssh!"

Luna widened her eyes and glanced at Gael. "Goons?"

"Very shady type of fellows. Two weasels and a lizard in a leather coat. Ssh! They wanted me to take them to the water plant too."

"Why the hell didn't you tell us?"

Gael whispered. "You didn't ask me. Sssh!"

Luna shook her head. "Never mind. Just get us there."

"Rowdy ho! Sssh!" The gopher rowed faster and faster until his boat stopped against the dock.

Rei and Luna hopped to the dock with their guns out. The dock was wooden but still strong as it floated on the water. Toward the end was a dark archway with a stairway toward the end.

Rei stared at Gael and waved to him. "Thank you, Gael."

"If you need a ferry, I will always be down here! Sssh!" The gopher pushed the boat from the dock and paddled down the river.

Luna shook her head. "That rodent is annoying."

Rei giggled. "I think he's nice."

"I don't care….. Let's move!"

"Gwaenchanh-a!" Rei followed Luna through the passageway while keeping her guard up.

They sprinted up the stairs and stepped across a long railing bridge inside an enormous chamber. The bridge brought them directly to a large building, surrounded by water. A giant pipeline stood on the building, connected to the round ceiling high above.

"Wow! Is that the sewer plant? It looks big!" Rei exclaimed.

"One of them that cleans up the shit down here," Luna explained.

"Why was it abandoned?"

"Who knows? Accidents, croc attacks, whatever. The water company doesn't give a damn what happens to one plant. They built plenty to keep the city water clean. Facilities and workers were all replacements for them. But if the money stops filling up their pockets, this city wouldn't have clean water anymore. When a plant shuts down, the company stops monitoring it to save money. Anything could sneak into an abandoned plant and hide like a cockroach. If the crooks here are lucky, their meeting will go smoothly."

The catgirls approached a metal doorway, covered in rust and mold. Rei reached for the doorknob, but Luna pushed her hand down.

The panther woman held up a finger to her lips. "Ssh! They might be on the other side. Use your x-ray vision."

Rei blinked her eyes. "My x-ray vision?"

"You have one, right?"

"Oh! That's right!" Rei giggled. "Silly me!"

She glared at the door and thought about using her x-ray sight. In a few moments, the door turned clear with red lines, shaping its original form. More lines stretched behind the door, forming a corridor. No humanoid shapes stood behind the clear door. "It is clear!"

A catty grin rose on each corner of Luna's mouth. "Good."

She kicked the door open and pointed her gun at the dark corridor. A double doorway was at the end with two dirty windows on.

Luna sprinted toward the door while squatting to stay low. She stood against the door and peeked through the window.

Rei approached her while staying low too. "What do you see?"

Luna growled. "I can't see shit! Can you use your magic eyes again?"

"Um-hum." Rei stared through the doorway. Behind it, three skeleton figures stood on a bridge structure inside a large empty space. The figure in the center held a briefcase while the other two held rifles.

Rei returned her eyes to normal and glanced at Luna. "There are three of them on the other side, but I can't identify them."

Luna shook her head and pushed the door a crack open. With one eye open, she peeked through the crack between the doors. “That’s them, but I don’t see Baby Shark. He could be late.”

“What should we do?”

“We will wait until Baby Shark arrives. Keep an eye on them with your x-ray sight and listen to their conversation.”

"Gwaenchanh-a!"

*****

Ragul stared at his wristwatch while waiting for Baby Shark inside the filter chamber. "Goddamnit! Where the hell is he? I hate people who are late!"

His weasel guards shrugged. They rarely care when they were getting paid to watch him.

Holding a briefcase with silver bars inside was a high risk in an isolated area. Especially where anyone could rob him. Was coming to the water treatment plant the right decision?

He doubted he could trust the infamous Baby Shark, but his gang needed weapons if they were going to take out their rivals. They couldn't smuggle drugs as long as they keep fighting on the street. But with Baby Shark's high-tech weaponry, Ragul's gang war will end quicker without a doubt.

Far in front of him, three figures approached from the shadows at the end of the bridge. The closer they came, the sooner Ragul recognized them.

A large shark man in a black pinstriped suit with a red tie strolled toward Ragul, smoking a cigar. His Great White shark head appeared smaller on his triangular muscular body, except his mouth was huge with rows of sharp teeth with his jaw. What an odd body form. Could that be why his nickname was Baby Shark?

His bodyguards wore grey suits and fedora hats on their catfish heads. One held a large metal case, and the other held a bigger rifle. Baby Shark carried no weapon as if he has the confidence that nobody would shoot him. How careless…..

Ragul stroked his purple mohawk on his iguana head. "Are you Baby Shark?"

The shark paused with his hands in his pockets. He smiled a grin while his fangs hung down over his lower jaw. "Who else do you expect?"

His deep tone was Italian in simple English words. Surprisingly, he didn't sounded like a baby.

Ragul eyed his guards, making sure their trigger fingers were ready in case the deformed shark was too stupid to start a firefight. "You got the merch?"

Baby Shark snapped his fingers. His tallest skinny bodyguard brought him the large cube-shaped briefcase and held it up. Baby Shark removed his cigar and punched in the code on the small locking panel on the case. The case beeped and opened, revealing a metal sphere with a barrel and a trigger handle.

Ragul smiled at the weapon in the case. The G-41, just like he saw in the photos on the black market site. Strong enough to blow up a tank and completely undetectable on the radar. However, the lizard glared at it. "Is that it?"

Baby Shark closed the case. "I only brought one to present you a sample."

Ragul hissed. "You said you have them!"

"I do, but not the entire shipment. I am not dumb enough to bring all of them here."

Ragul hissed harder until he sucked in his temper. The mobster was right about not bringing his entire shipment to the meeting. It would make Ragul's life miserable if he has to carry the shipment back to his hideout. He needed to calm his nerves down during business. "When will I get the rest?"

Baby Shark chewed on his cigar. "Show me the payment first."

Ragul opened up the case and held it out. Six silver bars gleamed at the shark man's black eyes.

"Happy now?" The lizard closed the case. "It is enough for the entire shipment."

The shark chuckled as he shook the ashes off his cigar. "I am very pleased, indeed."

"When will my gang get the weapons?"

"Tomorrow night will be good. I will get a transport to deliver the goods."

Ragul smiled. “I will appreciate that.”

Suddenly, a laser beam shot one of Baby Shark’s men from behind Ragul. The lizard jumped and looked around. “What the hell?”

*****

“Shit!” Luna pulled her sniper from the crack of the doorway. “I missed!”

She knew she was bad at sniping targets, but she was sure she had the chance to shoot Baby Shark’s small head off. The damn buyers were in her path of getting her job done quickly. Time to do the hard way now. “Grenade launcher!”

“Grenade launcher!” After her weapon changed, she kicked the door open and blasted one enemy shot.

The lizard and the weasels spotted the energy ball landed toward them. It exploded behind they could run. Their burning bodies flew off the bridge and fell into the dark water below. The only three targets left with Baby Shark and his henchmen.

“Machine gun!” Luna shouted.

“Machine gun!” Her weapon formed into a rifle with a spinning magazine beneath the barrel.

"Stay behind me!" Luna ordered Rei.

The lynx catgirl nodded while keeping her back against the wall.

Luna charged across the bridge while blasting. Baby Shark ran off while his bodyguards fired. One of them got shot down, but the other shot Luna's right leg.

She screamed and fell to the floor. Damn, that hurt!

Baby Shark's henchmen smiled as he pointed his pistol toward Luna's head. Before he pulled the trigger, a laser beam shot through his head and he collapsed like a rag doll.

Luna looked back and saw Rei approaching her with her smoking pistol.

She bent next to Luna and checked her wound. "Are you okay?"

Luna hissed while rubbing her wound. "Not bad like last time."

"I will-"

"No!" Luna pointed her finger at the open door at the end of the bridge. "You will get that son of a bitch before he escapes!"

"But-"

"Do it!"

Rei nodded and sprinted toward the door. Luna tried to rise, but the wound arched her thigh. It will take some time for the nanobots to heal up her injury. She just had to hope her partner will execute Baby Shark for her.

*****

Rei entered a large dark chamber, full of rusted water tanks, standing everywhere like a forest. She hid behind a tank and activated her x-ray vision. She glanced across and spotted Baby Shark's form, hiding toward the corner.

Rei grinned.

The big bad shark had planned to ambush her when she moves toward his attacking position. Thanks to her vision, she won't fall for that trap.

"Sniper rifle," Rei whispered.

"Sniper rifle!" Her gun changed in her hands while she held it up. The beam should hit him through five tanks in one row. But if the tanks were still filled with water, the water can weaken Rei's shot. She couldn’t execute him if that happens. However, taking the shot was her only chance.

Rei pointed her sniper at the tank while her x-ray vision remained active. She could also do a better shot than Luna.

She aimed the scope on Baby Shark’s head and fired.

Bam!

Baby Shark’s body outline collapsed to the floor. None of the tanks that got shot leaked water.

Rei smiled and jumped up and down. “I did! I did! I did!”

Luna will be proud of her for taking out the bounty, and so much money will fill up her pockets. Well, on her computer at least.

After her vision returned to night vision, she raced toward the corner and checked the spot. But instead of a body, she only found blood on the concrete floor. A small puddle of it.

“Huh!?” Rei heard a sharp growl above her. When she looked up, sharp fangs fell down toward her before she could scream.
