《Bounty Cats》Book One: Chapter 2

What is it? Fiona asked.
Luna rose near the edge of the roof. Something or someone is attacking the hotel!
Attacking? Can you identify the new target?
Luna zoomed in on one of the flashing windows, spotting four guards who stopped in the middle of a hallway. They aimed their laser rifles straight toward something Luna couldn't see. They kept aiming until something flashed behind a guard and slashed him in half.
The other guards fired, but the flash bounced around them, dodging their laser beams. Two guards fell to the floor with missing limbs, and the last guard dropped his rifle to run.
In one second, a blade shot through his chest from behind. He barely looked back, seeing a hyena smiled at his face.
The hyena pulled his sword out and pushed the guard's body to the floor.
Luna zoomed closer on the mysterious intruder. The hyena had a red mohawk, wearing a dirty green tank top and short jeans. He was barefoot, and his tail was shaped like a giant bird's feather, matching his red, brownish fur. He held one long sword in his left hand, while his other hand was a metal claw attached to his mechanic arm. Some kind of vent was on his neck, probably used to help him breathe. Pointy metal spikes sprouted on his shoulders toward his thick neck below his left metal ear. His other ear was normal, and he wore red goggles over his short brown muzzle.
Staring at the hyena sent shivers through Luna’s spine. It felt like she was staring at a creepy ghost in the dark hallway. With large round goggles, glowing red like two lighthouses, he would make all the ladies scream till all the glass windows explode. Who was that creep?
Luna! Fiona shouted.
Luna swallowed. Sorry- It’s a hyena cyborg. He’s-

She paused when two more guards charged toward him, shooting. Instead of dodging the laser beams, the hyena suddenly flashed and appeared behind the guards in a second.
By one swing of his sword, the guards’ heads fell off their bodies and bounced across the floor before their headless bodies fell next.
After he shook the blood off his sword, the hyena flashed, and then he was gone. Gone as if he blinked out of existence.
He’s what? Fiona asked.
Luna cleared her throat to remove the saliva she swallowed. I think he is moving very fast….. Or teleporting!
Teleporting?
I’m not sure! There is a flash of blue light every time he moves! He keeps reappearing while killing the guards!
What? That can’t be right!
I am telling you the truth! The freak is-
Luna paused again when the hyena appeared inside a lounge room, slicing and dicing the guards like a ninja. Witnessing his amazing moves not only terrified Luna, but the floor he was on was directly beneath the diner where Mr. Edger was at. The crooks rose with their guns out. They must have had heard the laser firing, alerting them.
Shit! I think he is heading toward our target! Luna cried.
What? How can you be sure? Fiona shouted.
Because he is heading straight to floor fifty where Mr.Edger is at!
Fiona’s voice growled. Attack now, but remember not to kill the target!
Understood! Luna stared at the enormous gap. It was one mile away from the hotel, but there seemed to be plenty of hovercars, flying between the buildings.
“Here’s go nothing.” After taking a deep breath, Luna jumped off the roof.
She landed on a taxi and leaped to the next vehicle as it zoomed by on all fours. She jumped and jumped without thinking for a second. Crossing the airway was like playing leapfrog without the ground.

After leaping off a hover tanker truck, she crashed through the glass window, head first while her arms blocked her face. She rolled her body in the mid-air before her butt touched the table and she stumbled across it.
Luna stopped herself and jumped up onto her feet, pointing off her T-Gun out. “Freeze! MCPD!”
Instead of surrendering, the lizards and the humans pointed their rifles at her. They outnumbered her and getting shot was unavoidable. But Luna wasn’t human or an ordinary Humanimal.
Activate targeting sequence! Through her red computer visor, tiny white circles appeared on each criminal while Luna glanced at them. Only one circle appeared on Mr. Edger's trigger finger since Luna needed him alive.
"I'll give you ten seconds to drop your weapons now," Luna ordered.
The crocodile leader laughed. "You can't win in this state, pussycat. You are already dead."
Luna laughed. "I warned your ass!"
Targeting completed! Luna dropped and spun her body around while shooting.
All her shots hit each circle on the criminals before they could fire. Mr.Edger dropped his rifle when his hand got shot.
Everyone fell to the floor dead except Luna and Mr. Edger. She jumped off the table and pointed her gun at Mr.Edger while he rubbed his hand, groaning.
"Surrender if you want to live, bitch!" Luna ordered.
Without a choice, Mr. Edger held up his hands. "I want my lawyer!"
Luna grabbed him and placed handcuffs on his wrists. "You can kiss your lawyer’s ass when you-”
The door burst open as the hyena stepped in. Luna swung behind Mr.Edger's back and aimed her gun at the attacker while holding Mr.Edger close to her. "Don't move!"
The hyena growled at her. "Who the hell are you?"
"MCPD, bitch! You have the right to stand where your ass is!”
The hyena chuckled through his breathing device on his neck. "You can't shoot me."
Target locked! "You wanna bet?"
The hyena kneeled on all fours while holding his sword on his back. Luna was sure he couldn't-
The blade sliced through her left arm before she could pull the trigger. She cried, falling to the floor, letting go of her target.
After she hit the floor, the hyena appeared next to Mr.Edger and swung his sword through Mr.Edger's neck.
"No!" Luna cried.
Mr.Edger's head fell off his shoulders and rolled toward Luna. A cold chill shot up through her body as she stared at the dead man's eyes.
The hyena kicked the headless body to the floor and smiled at her. "Too slow, pussy."
Luna covered her missing arm socket where her snapping wires and tiny metal parts sparked. Good thing her body parts were cybernetic, but how could he move faster than her trigger fingers.
"See yah!" The hyena charged toward the broken window and jumped through it.
Luna barely got up, hissing through her fangs painfully. She shambled toward the window and poked her head out to look down.
All she saw were the hover cars, flying and zooming below the window. No sight of the hyena anywhere.
Either he landed on a hover car to escape, or he used his trick again.
Luna hissed in anger. “I will find you, you son of a bitch!”

Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!
