《Legend Land: Tale of the Nameless God》Chapter 16.2 Cry of Death

The spear embeds itself between one of Zargoth's teeth and his gums. Mutovinatum slinks along the spear and slips into the small wound. I hope I didn't just do something stupid.
The dragon swats at me and I duck behind a tree stump. He moves to crush me, but his paw halts in mid-air. It jerks forward and then comes down a few feet away from me. He roars and uses his wings to lift up into the air. As he flaps, one of his wings twists on itself and crunches, sending the dragon plummeting to the earth. I peek from around the stump to see Zargoth dragging his head along the ground. One paw comes up and he bites it savagely, digging into his own flesh. His tail whips around and he stomps in it, bones snapping. He lets out a pained scream that penetrates into my bones. Despite myself, I feel a chill down my spine, and I almost feel...bad?
One of his shoulders rotates and he slams his leg down, bone snapping through one of the joints. I wince at the grinding and crunching noise, rotating my shoulder subconsciously. Zargoth collapses forward, tearing off several of his claws with his teeth. He slams his head repeatedly into the earth, even as his hind legs try to drag him away.
We all watch with open mouths as the dragon tries to scream with a mouthful of earth, his single wing flapping weakly. Blood oozes from the cracks in his skull, teeth flying out with every impact. Zargoth catches my eye, huge tears rolling down his scaly cheeks. I rush forward to do something, anything, but it's too late.
With one last screech, Zargoth slams his head into the earth and snaps his own neck with a sickening crunch. Black goo pours out from between his scales, surrounding the dragon, enveloping it in inky darkness. After a few moments of pressure, the mighty beast suddenly collapses. Mutovinatum slowly rises, standing taller than before and emanating a wave of power. Gods, what have I done?

"The heart of Zargoth, an eternal heat source." He looks at me, revealing innumerable rows of sharp, triangular, teeth. "Bon appétit." Before I can think of anything else, I rush forward and snatch it from his grip, jumping back to avoid a save swipe. The power source wasn't one or both crystals, it was Zargoth's heart. It looks like a black rock with several veins of what appear to be pulsing lava intertwined through it.
"How's that portal coming along?" I shout behind me. Mutovinatum stalks closer, tendrils of shadow whipping and hissing around him like a wall of serpents.
"Something's keeping me here!" Donyoku shouts back frantically. No shit, Sherlock. I roll underneath several tendrils that shoot out towards me, slicing them apart with my kusarigama. Ghelly jumps into the fray, shooting several more that try to impale me. Sorry shadow snakes, I'm kind of the one who does the impaling around here.

MANTIS: On Hiatus
Two young adults who were childhood friends are killed amidst a pandemic worse than our own. After many years apart, Rihelah was on her way to see Michael, hoping to rekindle their friendship on the day they would both lose their lives. The pair are unwittingly selected to represent Earth in a test set forth by godlike beings who are intrigued that our world gave rise to complex life without having been intentionally seeded by their kind. Michael and Rihelah are reincarnated as predatory insects upon a distant planet called Edon. Elves, Dwarves, Dragons and their kin, Goblins, Ogres, Humans, Lizardfolk, Orcs, and sapient arthropods known as Enkelyn all inhabit this beautiful world touched by magic. The tiny mantids must survive terrified and very much alone upon arrival, while neither is aware that the other has also been reincarnated upon the same island. Naked in their new chitinous exoskeletons, they must now brave the terrors of an alien world's food chain. Each will benefit from their years of experience on Earth, but they must somehow find a balance between old lives and new. Moderate mindsets and peaceful values from a mostly safe and privileged life on Earth must now contend and somehow coexist with the strange physiology of a new and unfamiliar body as well as the violent aggressiveness of a predator's mind. To top things off, the pair are about to find themselves struggling with their inner turmoil while swept up by terrible conflicts they know nothing about. Both endure the hardships of their new lives while attempting to understand and make proper use of a mysterious and terse video-game-like System that pops status notifications into their vision from time to time, but initially has no useful interface. Some of the options they are presented with sound enticing, but as with everything else in life, each choice has benefits and drawbacks... Author's Note: This story makes many changes to the original version, and readers of Mantid will find that many things in Mantis are new and different; especially after the first few chapters. I've learned a ton from writing like a madman, and also from the RR community. I appreciate you guys! :)

8 206The Book of Rune
If you like moderately well-researched semi-medieval military logistics with some fantasy twists, and also conspiracy, and exploration, and violence, and maybe a dash of road movie, hey, Ruen just might be your thing. Plot-wise, basically there's a guy who got fired by Death, a kid with pyrotechnic tendencies, and a slave general who wouldn't mind retiring but ended up on a mass suicide mission. If you were looking for a less TL;DR version, a guy who got fired by Death meets a kid with pyrotechnic tendencies, and they try to get the guy un-fired while also trying to come to terms with death together (ooohhhh, look, I'm deep). Meanwhile a slave general does something stupid and ends up being sent on a suicide mission, and he tries to wreak havoc and save lives at the same time. The threads come together, I swear. This is a rough draft of a fantasy semi-book that I've had in the back of my head for some time. I've written a variety of short stories set in the world over the past three years, and I finally kicked myself into writing the actual story. Very much a slow work in progress. Occasional violence (okay, well, maybe more than occasional), occasional foul language.
