《Jupiter's Rising》Chapter 6 - Bred for evolution

Holding the steel ball that started this whole situation, I had mixed feelings but let it go after a bit as I couldn’t change my situation much and I still haven’t figured anything out from the slime.
I held the ball for a few seconds before I felt a slight tingle rushing from my neck to my arms all the way to my fingers. The feeling was extremely weird as if it was an electric shock zipping through my arm yet soft and not as numbing as electricity would have you. I then spotted a little green dot shoot out of my finger and dive in the open ball for a few moments before dashing back into my finger and running straight back to my brain.
The experience was “new” to say the least and didn’t feel that uncomfortable aside from the fact that a sentient slime probably ordered it and can manipulate little green blobs to shoot around my body… unsettling to say the least.
“Still need me to hold this?” I asked considering the slime seemed to having finished its little recon mission there.
“No, I retrieved the required information from it.” With that reply, I put down the ball back on my desk before taking a seat on the office chair with curiosity written all over my face about what it discovered. I didn’t really want to bother it so I just sat there quietly thinking over what the slime had said previously about evolution and this whole rank 4 civilization bit. Was a rank 4 civilization the slime nation? Do they need humans or other creatures to “evolve” as it described? I didn’t want to think too negatively but couldn’t help those stray thoughts of what this “evolution” entails and how it would affect him.
The slime finally seemed to have finished its…well, whatever it was doing and talked again.
“It seems what you said seems to be the case, I was not awakened until you had provided some power as my automated eggs functions were in stasis due to having been lost from reaching its original destination for so long.”
“That rank 4 civilization you mentioned?”
“Yes, though my situation seems to be a little more peculiar as usually if any attack or impending danger is approaching the carrier ships, the ships defenses would teleport the items back as close as possible to the last “safe zones” available with its energy so as to avoid technology landing in the wrong hands and re-secure its contents later but I was probably hit with interference and sent off somewhere else and probably arrived here as the aftermath from what I can tell.”

I was surprised at the talk of the available technologies this civilization had…teleportation? That’s some straight up OP civilization but I had some pressing matters to get out of the way as my situation with the slime is still unclear especially so now that it realized I am not part of its super civilization but I was bothered by something it said and couldn’t help but steel myself and ask.
“Uhm, wait… you were teleported away as part of…uh, well the technology? ‘Please don’t get offended at that…Oh god! Please.’ Internalizing a prayer that this question may hopefully not be my last.
“Well of course! Oh right. You aren’t aware of what we are on even a fundamental level. Let me explain a little as best as your language permits. I was part of a batch of newly born infant slimes that was being sent off as shipment towards a school planet for children. We are created from technological and biological systems that create a more enhance life with those we attach to. We can aid in analyzing certain materials, general knowledge but our main function is to, in a way to boost, the evolutionary speed of slightly slower individuals that are lacking behind or have been born with restrictions as opposed to their peers.”
‘Fuck! Confusion my dear friend, we meet again!’ Though I thought that, my thoughts were rapidly churning out the information and processing it slightly better than expected which kind of made me think of all those novels about pies falling from the sky for some reason.
“I have a ton of questions in regards to everything you just said but mainly you are allowed to attach yourself to children’s brains? Aren’t they worried that the slimes may negatively impact the children?”
“It seems you are quite unaware of just what benefits a rank 4 civilization has. Here is a short description of why this has never been an issue. My creators are actually slime breeders to be specific. They took the originally weaker slime type species and bred out new species without some of the less helpful behaviors and genes while using technology to ameliorate their good points while also adding some features. Now this process started close to 20 thousand years ago and with other assistance technologies it was perfected though there are other ways to do what we do without needing slimes. It was one of the cheaper ones and so people without too much to spend on the latest would procure slimes for their children to give them a brighter future than they would have without the evolutionary aid. It is simply an advanced form of nurturing though like I said there are definitely other and better as well as lesser methods if you could procure enough currency for it or couldn’t.” The slime replied in a slow but well described fashion which left me shocked at its English because, apparently, it just learned it!

I was also a little impressed at myself for not being completely lost at its explanation and considered the possibility of it being the effects of having it speak directly to my mind which still felt like there was someone else standing near me yet not as well it’s so called boosting.
A few moments of thinking later I was still skeptical of it and decided to further question it’s so called “capabilities.”
“I mostly understood what you said but isn’t there still the possibility of a slime taking over a child’s brain and I don’t know, taking him over or injuring him if the child doesn’t listen to the slime?”
“Yes and no, my species is technically not capable of doing that sort of take over as it isn’t something we can perform with 100% definiteness which may leave us worse off than we started and we are usually attached to those we first come into contact with until we evolve further as recalibrating to another life form would probably kill us from the energy and capacity requirements which we simply do not have and we are usually only allowed to attach to those that need assistance that we can perform on their evolutionary path which benefits our evolutions as well.”
“Oh. Okay, that makes sense I guess but why do you and the rank 4 civilization desire this evolutionary path so much?” I was getting curious at this point as this was its original goal and it seems this goal also placates all reason to parasitize the host or defy.
“Simple. We as slime though bred and manufactured but are then taught and grow naturally to have sentience are also considered as citizens of the civilization for various reasons but like children are very co-dependent when in infancy. We have ways to assist the children we are given to be attached to and the children in return assist us as they reach maturity to evolve into our own independent being.”
“What if there aren’t any children to assist and wait you can become independent!?”
“Considering the extremely vast population a rank 4 civilization has and that perfection isn’t something beings are born with, no matter how naturally gifted. There are always places for us to assist and even if not, we could always find a creature to attach to in order to evolve as we aren’t treated ill due to our capabilities even as infants and of course we can become independent, that is our purpose as it allows us greater freedom and we evolve alongside the being we attach to so we benefit tremendously and infant slimes of my species aren’t the strongest beings at birth which to counter they have this method to achieve our own “adulthood” while assisting our partners.”
“I see. I see. That makes sense. That sounds really awesome actually! So technically, you and I are stuck together since you were thrown here and we can evolve together?”
“Yes” the exact reply I wanted to hear as my head could only start seeing benefits from this deal though I still had apprehensions, It made a lot of sense considering the high tech ball and the fact that slimes alone seem quite frail and slow from experience.

Many Minded
Synopsis: Issa Pyxis, Spacer orphan and illegal heretic, graduated from living on the streets to running with a gang years ago, but now it looks like that’s all going to change. Her inheritance, more specifically who—or what—she is, is catching up with her, and on a planet with the Emperor’s inquisitors slinking around in every shadow, nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted. What will she do? A cyberpunk story about identity, loneliness, covert infiltration, evil dystopias, and much more! Features: - Cyborgs and cyberpunk galore - This is indented to be somewhat “rational” and “hard” Sci-Fi story - Original Fiction however parts of my worldbuilding are inspired by other Sci-Fi stories (duh) Rationale: The future is cool, AIs are kickass, and questions about consciousness are simultaneously existential and yet unanswered. To me, this story is a vehicle for exploring these topics, and also, I wanted to write a story where the protagonist was unafraid of themselves and where their self is more like a git-repo than a meat computer. Disclaimer: This story primarily takes place in what we’d describe as a “cyberpunk dystopia” with some extra technocracy, autocracy, and religious fervor thrown into the mix, so there will be some “grittiness” in this story. Caveat emptor. Also, [insert your favorite boilerplate “views expressed” disclaimer here]. I shouldn’t need to say this, but the main character and other characters in my story can be wrong on occasion (gasp!) and the way they view the world isn’t always objective truth (if such a thing even exists) nor do their views and opinions necessarily reflect the views of me, the author. Sufficiently Advanced
A Novella about magic vs aliens vs science. It's a raucous, campy sci-fi read involving humans gaining magic, a possibly pizza-hating alien empire, the decapitation of the US Federal Government, eldritch abominations, lesbian space witches and some medium-hard science.I wouldn't say it's not serious, but I wouldn't say it's serious. Eh, it's not serious. Wait... it's getting serious.

After all if such awareness was available before the proper Brain matter was grown them how would one gain consciousness? Well there is only one simple and miraculous word to describe it. Magic. Whether it was a highly organized magic system, a chaotic mash of dark arts, or some divine intervention it could be considered to be magic non the less. And magic? Well one had plenty of time in the womb to discover and train it. And that was exactly what one would do if they found themselves in such a situation! Thanks to WifuLabs for the cover.
