《Between Gods And Mortals》Chapter 7: The King's Witches

The next day arrives, Ragnarson wakes up, puts on his light clothes that characterizes being a warrior, takes a deep breath and goes to a mirror he has in his room. He looks at himself in the mirror mounted on the wall. He rests both his hands on the edge and brings his face even closer to the mirror. The warrior looks deeply at his reflection and says around to himself:
Ragnarson... Today will be a great day... You have decisions to make... Important decisions. You need to have a clear head to solve this! Alright, let's go!
The warrior did a morning reflection before actually starting his day. He knows very well the weight he carries and naturally feels the pressure. Many people trust him, even the late king, so Ragnarson feels this great burden on his back. He knows he will have to do his best, which may still not be enough.
Ragnarson walks towards Bella's room and sees the door opening and leaving the room with luggage in hand. The two exchange glances and smile. A bureaucratic smile, the day after the king's death still weighs heavily on both of them. She then says to the warrior:
I'm going to the witches to take me to Earth... I don't have time to say goodbye or anything. I'm counting on you to help me out of here! I see… You can count on me, but know that I will be impartial in the election of the new king. I won't turn a blind eye, much less benefit anyone. I will accompany you there. I've been expecting this, Ragnarson. No problem… Let's go ahead, by the way… You've been to Midgard before, right? Yes… A people very different from ours, mainly in their ideas! So be very careful. I understand… Bring some stones that can be sold there to get the local currency right away… Try to mix it up as quickly as possible and go unnoticed Okay… I believe the witches will give me the rules of my trip there too. Yes… They will explain and you must obey at all costs! Understood! By the way, how did you get to Earth before? Well… At the time of peace between Asgard and the realm of giants, Jotunheim. It was possible to use Bifrost. An instrument that connects realms. Unfortunately we don't have one or something like that. Sorceresses must know a way to transport themselves there!
The two walk to the place where the witches are. It's a long, remote path from the castle. Both never went there. The place is lit with torches, even in daylight. A dark place surrounded by darkness. A huge door is seen and before Ragnarson knocks on it, they swing open. Five blindfolded women appear in front of them both.
They wear baggy dresses and a variety of colors. With long hair, even blindfolded, it is clear that they are very beautiful. The sorceresses of the kingdom bring a huge mystery throughout the kingdom and even to Ragnarson and Bella, who have lived in the castle for years. They don't know what they're capable of, only that they live in this part of the castle.
King Lumnus saw them often. For other people in the castle, they were closed and didn't answer. Lumnus said they needed space reserved for their studies and spells. And that was why it was dangerous for their presence to be in a busy part of the castle, there might be an accident and there might be some chance. The king also always explained that they should stay in the castle because they were valuable and consequently someone might try to kidnap them or steal their studies.

The two enter deeper into their great hall and see a huge amount of scrolls and books on shelves. At first glance it looks like a detailed wooden library, but very clean and with a pleasant smell. What is unexpected for the princess and the warrior, who in their experiences, libraries smell musty and sometimes even messy, very different from what they are seeing now.
Ragnarson, who has never been there before, is impressed. He realizes that the old king messed with things beyond reason. While distracted by the place, without Ragnarson noticing, one of the witches approaches from behind the warrior and whispers in his ear:
Ragnarson… A pleasure to see you after all these years. I saw you in many of my prophecies…
At this point, Ragnarson is frightened and immediately takes out his LionBite sword. But before removing it all from the cable. The sorceress in the blue dress stops him. She is endowed with incredible strength and was able to get onto the warrior's back without realizing it. Even though he's old, Ragnarson knows that his reflexes haven't rusted, only his body, which leaves him impressed. She keeps saying:
Listen Ragnarson… let's not be hostile… I'm sorry if I scared you a little… Your illustrious presence pleases me - The other witch present addresses her sister near Ragnarson saying: Sister… Stop kidding. You knew very well they would come! Don't make all that fuss! I'm sorry, sister! - The warrior is impressed and frightened by the power of the witches that until now was unknown. He then asks: Did you guys already know that we were coming here? Yes, it's part of our job… We know they want something with us… If you know we were coming here… Then you must know what we want? They never saw us, but you know our names and that we would come here Not really… That's not how it works. Okay… Since you're curious… Let's explain to you who we are and what we do. I'm all in red I'm Lilith… The one in the all blue dress is Agnes… The one in purple is Anna… The one in green is Jadis… The one in yellow is Bridget and lastly the oldest among us and in the black dress is Sidonia. We call each other sisters, but we're clearly not blood. Nice to meet you. Anyway… Presentations made… Where does the princess need to go so urgently? My destination is Brooklyn. Hmm… Interesting fate. Do you think you will find Odin there? It's a bet I'm making. I'm not sure yet...
Lilith introduces each of the sisters to Ragnarson and Bella, which causes a huge surprise and more questions to arise. Those close to the king as royalty and the top know of the existence of the witches, their presence was always ignored or not revealed, besides the fact that they always kept their work in the dark, rarely being disturbed. The princess and the warrior realize that the witches fall far short of gossip and what Lumnus said. They are able to see the future too. Lilith resumes her speech and continues explaining:
As you noticed… We can see a little bit of the future, but that doesn't mean it will happen. The future is volatile, the end result may be different from what we anticipated, but it is rare. When King Lumnus was alive, we were the oracle to him. We made prophecies and he studied them, analyzed them and made decisions based on that... If you can see prophecies… Why didn't you prevent the death of your king?

Anger consumes Ragnarson when he asks the witches that question. Because from what they explained and he understood. They can see many futures and in their vision they have surely seen the king's death. What could have been avoided.
We do not work on behalf of anyone whether Lumnus or Jotunheim. We were sent by the gods. We cannot interfere in history. That would be a major attack that could lead to our death and a collapse of the timeline. However, we warned the king that he would be killed by someone he knew. But that was years ago, the prophecies don't come with a specific date. it can happen a day or ten years later. Hmm… I see you are dissatisfied with Lord Ragnarson, but we cannot act outside our bounds. See these sales we use? We are blind. From the moment we receive our missions from the gods we can no longer see. A sacrifice that has to be made for us who see far beyond the moment. We look at the past and the future by giving up the present.
Ragnarson is stunned to learn this, they are all blind and yet the sorceress Agnes managed to come up behind his back without noticing and stop the draw of her sword. There is no doubt that they are supernatural entities from the gods. An area totally unknown to the warrior and the princess, who watches everything paralyzed. Surprised by what you're hearing and what was happening a few meters from where you slept.
We saw that the two would come here… What do you need from us? I believe you want to be transported, am I correct princess? Yes… I believe you already know the destination then? Our prophecies and clairvoyance do not show everything that will happen. We only see a few lapses of the future. Sometimes the final result and sometimes the process until it... I see… Are you able to send me to Earth? A place called Brooklyn? Yes we are... We just have to make some preparations first. Thank you!
Four princesses get together and start making preparations. They act like they're not blind, pick up objects, walk and even stare at Ragnarson. Sidonia does not follow the others and goes towards the princess and the warrior. She apparently wants to talk to us. Ragnarson doesn't understand why she's the only sorceress who doesn't wear colorful clothes. She wears a dress and a black blindfold.
As you already know… I'm Sidonia, the oldest witch around here. Is that why you wear black clothes? For being the oldest? This and other reasons, but that is beside the point. What's your goal in midgard, Bella? Well… I… I want to find Odin and talk to him! Does the princess believe he will bring solutions to her problems? Maybe… I have to try anyway! Meanwhile, Ragnarson will settle matters around here. I settle in Midgard! I see… Your future is cloudy even for us… Something is coming and it could be dangerous or big… What did you see, Agnes? No, very… Prophecies can come in many ways as my sister said… Even voices or hunch are included. We don't know what awaits the princess on her visit to Midgard, much less if it will bring changes or fruits… I still can't understand… Can you see the future, can you comment on it but you can't interfere with the final result? Ragnarson asks Agnis, raising his eyebrow slightly. That's right warrior… If we talk or advise it won't happen! You guys know me really well, right? We can say yes my lord, Ragnarson! You with Thor, Odin and Lumnus were the only ones able to alter the future previously. Something that is very rare. It borders on impossible, but you have proven otherwise. Amazing... - says the princess. It really is... - Sister Anna approaches the three, interrupting the conversation and says: Preparations are now ready! Right!
The princess and the warrior start following Anna who walks a few meters where they have prepared spells to send to Earth. Both see the design of a large circle, inside it details of a language unknown to Ragnarson on the ground, but such runes are of a similar character to what he has seen before. Which makes you ask:
These writings… I know them from somewhere… Probably from the Bifrost of the Asgardians… On our occasion, we have to make preparations, have the necessary stones and we are still limited in the number of times we can perform this most powerful spell. Bifrost allows it to be used at any time and without any restrictions or conditions. However, its use was limited by Odin himself. - Says Anna to the warrior. Hmm, I understand. Come on, princess! Stay in the center of the circle!
The Sorceress Sisters begin to position themselves around the circle made by them. A magic unknown to Ragnarson and Bella. However, she is willing to embark on this adventure and the warrior has promised to help her. Her attempt could be in vain and her absence is likely to lead to her defeat. A risk she set out to take.
Before we start the ritual, we have to give you the necessary instructions... Understood… What are they? The princess cannot be directly involved in human affairs such as politics and wars - Says Agnes. Intrinsically prohibited from revealing its powers and origins in public. - says Anna. You cannot pass on knowledge of our world to humans. - Says Sidonia. Bella will not be able to kill any humans during her stay in Midgard. - says Jadis. And lastly you can't take root with humans - Says Bridget.
These conditions all make sense, with the exception of the last one. Why take away the freedom to love a human and have children with them? The answer must lie in the past. It would come as no surprise that many men in our kingdom came to earth and had children and then returned. And this lost child received the genetic half of a giant or an Asgardian. How would you explain this? But, even with genetics, the receiver still has to awaken its true power, which without the very training provided and known in this world of ours, is practically impossible for any human.
The other rules were obvious and made perfect sense. The physical attributes of either realm are far superior to those in Midgard. There is still the question of magic, spells and knowledge. In the hands of authorities or superiors in Midgard would be their destruction. So the witches have passed on these rules. Which are also applied to anyone who uses Bifrost and anyone who goes to Earth. These orders came from those of the gods and according to legends. Punishments and sanctions are suffered for those who disobey them. And since they are direct orders from the gods, you never hear from people who have gone against them. The likely penalty was death or purge. There is no solid information about this.
Asgardians or giants frequented the Earth mainly in search of knowledge, and thanks to this much was passed on, but of course they were always so that nobody knew their real goals and origins. Fighting styles, weapon making, clothing, agriculture and livestock are some examples of acquired knowledge.
Any more questions Bella? - Sidonia Question I do not think so! You can start the ritual to teleport me! Right… I don't think this will be the last time we see each other princess! What do you mean by that?
Sidonia says this directly to Bella but doesn't respond. Just giving a slight smile. The sisters hearing the princess' positive response to begin the process immediately begin to sing an unfamiliar song. Soon after, they join hands and start to rotate around the circle they made.
A blue light begins to exhaust the traces made on the floor. The light gets more and more intense, to the point that Ragnarson can't see anything and when the light dims, he doesn't see Bella there anymore. The ritual was a success and sent to Midgard.
With his duty done, Ragnarson prepares to leave the room, but before that he sees one of the sisters putting her hand on one of her shoulders, it was Agnis, saying:
Warrior… Wait! Our business here is not over yet! What do you wish? Well… Aren't you curious about the last prophecy that was given to your friend and King Lumnus? Hmm… Maybe! I imagined… Follow me warrior, let's go deeper into our rooms! we have something to show you
Ragnarson, with no time to waste and curious about what the sorceress sisters will show him, follows them. The warrior notices that they live very well, that they have research materials, a large space and other perks. All this right under your nose. Lumnus took their work very seriously. In fact it was a fair exchange, he provided what they asked for and they gave him prophecies, omens and other things. A more beneficial exchange for the old king, if you think being able to have a hint of the future is a reasonable advantage.
Sorceresses never gave what they saw directly, if they did, it wouldn't happen. Likely they even hide information, but that's just speculation. The king trusted them and their impartiality, so there was nothing to fear for now. What makes a mutual relationship of interests?
The warrior and the witches arrive at their destination, it is another empty room, without any decoration and with little lighting. The room is all gray and built with cement only, in the center of it there is a pillar approximately one meter high and on top in the round shape an almost straight shell. Ragnarson has no idea what it is and stops a few feet from it. Agnis approaches and takes his arm, saying:
After countless battles and near death experiences… Is our warrior scared? Huh? Of course not… I admit I'm a little scared and very surprised of what's to come! I thought you were going to tell me what was the last prophecy given to the king? Yes… but it will be better than that! Let's show you the king that night he saw the prophecy! What ? It's possible ? After all, do you still doubt us, warriors? Hmm… A mistake I won't make anymore! hahahaha Right, warrior! Get closer to the "Mirror of Memories" Positive!
Ragnarson approaches the unknown object and sees that inside the shell there is a blue liquid and inside that liquid there are light clasps rotating inside. The same color even as the light that came out when Bella was teleported to Terra. Time-related spells are likely to have this color. The warrior is still scared and looks at the sisters without saying anything. But his face clearly shows that he is confused and doesn't know what to do. Sidonia breaks the silence for good.
Put your head in the mirror, Ragnarson! What? Yes, or don't you ever want more than the king's past? - Sidonia clearly touches Ragnarson's wound to keep him going forward. Man's curiosity is limitless, whether for good or for evil. Let's get on with it! Watch your fall, warrior...
He doesn't understand what Sidonia meant and so ignores her falsehood, but thanks to her teasing, he now has the necessary determination coming from the witch's teasing. Ragnarson sinks his head into the shell. She didn't look deep, but her head went all the way in and there was still space. A few seconds pass and nothing happens. The sadist starts to run out of air in his lungs, in a few seconds he will have to leave.
Ragnarson held on as long as he could and nothing happened so far, so he tried to get out of the water, but it's in vain. His head is stuck and despair arises. Your heart rate increases as a result, which facilitates the process of dying from suffocation. Would this be the end of the great warrior Ragnarson? Tricked by five witches and a whole future and not caring thrown away for mere carelessness, to trust five powerful women who worked with the king? It's not possible, but that's what's happening. Ragnarson stops moving in his attempt to get out of the mirror, his heartbeat slows, his eyes close and the sensation of falling into an abyss comes to the warrior.
The warrior has the feeling of being falling for a while until he finds the ground solid and crashes to the ground, he feels a pain unconsciously but oddly enough he is alive. He looks at himself and sees that everything is in order, but something is off. He gets up and looks around, sees he's at the entrance to where the witches are. The confused warrior starts talking to himself:
Did they send me to the past? Or is this an illusion?
Footsteps sound from far away and Ragnarson has nowhere to hide, he will have to face what lies ahead. A tall, strong man with long hair and very nice clothes approaches. The warrior does not believe what he sees. The man in front of him is none other than the late King Lumnus. Ragnarson is thrilled and says:
Lumnus!!!
He doesn't get any response and finds it strange, as a last attempt he tries to touch his king and fails. His hand passes directly through the king's body. Ragnarson then realizes that the witches made his body immaterial and sent him back to the past to see this memory of the king. The way it was promised. Emotion swept through Ragnarson for a moment that made him forget his purpose and believe that his former king and friend were alive.
With his head bowed, the warrior hears the door open and the king waits to be called inside. With his erect pose and his two hands behind his back, a very common pose for Lumnus. After the door opens wide and receives Anna's signal, the king enters the room. However, Agnes looks back towards where Ragnarson was and gives a slight smile.
Wanting to know more about Lumnus' latest actions, the warrior follows them deeper into their hall and watches them as closely as possible. Ragnarson knows he was sent there for some reason. The witches want him to see something, not just the last prophecy given to the king, but something else.
Lumnus appears to be restless and nervous, which is unusual. He made a point of always displaying a steady, confident pose when he was around his advisers and soldiers. The warrior watches everything closely. Nobody apparently can see him.
The prophecy you gave me can only be wrong! It's not possible! - Says the king. Lord Lumnus... What was passed on to you was exactly that! There is no turning back. The future is volatile, but as we've explained it's basically impossible to change. - Says Bridget But what is about to happen of this magnitude… Not to mention that I can die at any time and worse, from treason. We are just the messengers, Lord Lumnus. Yes I know!
The atmosphere is very tense in the room. Apparently the last prophecy given by the witches to the king has already been exposed and this time he came back thinking that there might be a mistake or if something could be done. The king is clearly shaken and fighting something he cannot. Desperate and nervous, faces and feelings, that Ragnarson never saw and thought of seeing from the king. The heated conversation with the witches continues.
No words spoken before will be changed! The peace will end and then the first steps towards Ragnarok will begin! - Says Sidonia Ragnarok! This can't be... It's happened before and there's no reason it should happen again... Besides, Ragnarok can come and stay for years. The consequences are immeasurable. Yes, Lord Lumnus! Ragnarok may be on the way. We can't say anything else! By the gods. It means the end of everything we struggled to build!
Ragnarson is surprised by what he saw and heard. Ragnarok is a word that scares anyone, whether warrior, normal or even king. Its meaning is the end of all that is known alive. Everything will be destroyed and a new beginning will come. It has happened before, of course, no legend arises without it having happened for someone to tell it and pass it on to future generations. Seeing a legend come true is hard to believe, but frightening in a way that there is no yardstick.
Even Ragnarson lost himself in his thoughts, his eyes wide and his heart rate racing. Ragnarok is no joke, and having met the witches, they are serious and truthful about it. However, there is still something wrong. The witches of the present sent him to the past to see the last prophecy and so far nothing has been said. The king had already received the message.
Until Agnis falls to the ground, she seems to be having a seizure and starts screaming loudly in despair. The sisters go towards the fallen sister. Something unusual for their reaction. Sidonia tries to lift Agnes' head, who is now feeling pain in her body. The king also approaches confused and asks:
What was there ? I do not know! This never happened before! - Says Anna I think she's getting a message from the gods - Sidonia says she's one of the oldest witches What? This is very rare! - Says Jadis Yes! But the gods decided to send a last minute message! THE CHOSEN IS AMONG US. THAT MAY SAVE ALL KINGDOMS IS ALIVE! FIND IT BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!!! - Agnes screams this and automatically calms down and the symptoms pass, apparently she's fine but still needs to recover.
At this point the six in the room are surprised but very confused. A prophecy of the prophecy was practically given. Can Ragnarok be avoided? It's still not certain, but someone has enough power to save all the kingdoms. Who would this person be? Prophecy, therefore, refers to the chosen one. Something that theoretically goes with Ragnarok, that a powerful being is chosen by the gods and that he will save the realms. A legend too. Such a person never came and others who were believed to be were not. Great changes are coming, the world that Ragnarson, Lumnus and anyone else knew was about to be changed forever. Lumnus raises his voice:
This gives us a little hope, but we don't know if we know who the chosen one is or if he even exists or wants to save us. It could be anyone among us! Fate is inevitable. If it's going to happen, it will happen! We are not lucky. I have to do something right away!
Lumnus did not know that he was moments away from his death. Because of that, he can't prepare himself, let alone tell anyone about it. Even seeing all this, Ragnarson cannot tell anyone that there is a possibility of Ragnarok. The nation would be scared and politics would boil even more. Not to mention that they might not believe his words, as the witches are unknown women. All Ragnarson can do for now is wait for the chosen one. A man who once saved others is now the one waiting to be saved.
The sister who passed on the prophecy, Agnes, is now passed out. The other sisters help her lay her down on a large table they have in the hall to rest and wait for her to wake up. Ragnarson still watches everything from afar until he feels his body being lifted and when he realizes he is being pulled up. He enters darkness again and when he opens his eyes he is seeing the sisters around him and his head wet with breathlessness. Before saying anything, he tries to catch his lost breath, as moments ago he was being drowned. He gets up quickly, and still not taking his full breath says:
Ragnarok!!! Well done, warrior Ragnarson! I believe your stay here is over! - Says Sidonia. What? You saw everything you had to see… - Says Agnes. Farewell Ragnarson the Sadist! Wait...
After saying this, Agnes raises her finger above her head, the entrance door to the witches' hall opens and the warrior feels pulled again. This time, he is being taken by Agnes' magic to the entrance door where he is thrown, falling face down. His second fall today, not in so many wars already fought, the warrior fell so much. The witches didn't even give him a chance to talk anymore. He gets up and sees the doors close. Ragnarson looks at himself and brushes off the dust he got from standing on the ground and starts talking to himself:
And now ? What should I do? Things got even worse than imagined! By the gods…
