《Between Gods And Mortals》Chapter 5: Reunions

Hakon finishes reminiscing about his past with Ragnarson. A teardrop comes out of his eye. If he didn't hold back, he would leave more. Thanks to Ragnarson Einar he could be right there in front of his standing rescuer. The war plan was suicidal, but it worked. Most of the giant army of that day died, but the sacrifice made by men will never be forgotten and because of them a peace never seen lasted for several years. Until the assassination of King Lumnus, obviously there is a culprit and there will be war.
Running the ultimate authority of a realm leaves no other alternative. Hakon knew that his former general was not there by chance. And looking very different from the previous one, almost unrecognizable. After years gone and even assumed he was dead. Without a doubt he came to the castle where the king was killed to investigate and find the murderer. His instincts were capable of that.
After recognizing Ragnarson, he touches the chest of the guard beside him who was suspicious of the sudden arrival of an unknown soldier at a time like this, saying:
Let the man work! Go do what you gotta do! But… Enough… There's no reason to suspect him!
That said, Hakon nods to Ragnarson and allows him entry into the castle. After walking a few meters, the warrior stops for a moment and realizes that he knows this Hakon, having fought under Einar's command. In fact, the deputy captain reported that if it wasn't for the help of one such “Hakon”, it would not be possible to push his flame machine. When the vice captain had to leave for a moment because of enemy attacks, this guard continued to push the heavy device into the position Einar would designate. Of course, he was very brave and Ragnarson thanked him for that, but the occasion doesn't allow him to do that.
The warrior keeps walking and his fate is certain, he wants to go to the body of his former king Lumnus, analyze his body, look for evidence and finally say goodbye. His friend died. Ragnarson never had many friends, to the point where you can count on your fingers. And few were the ones he loved either.
Having frequented that castle, Ragnarson knew very well where to walk and avoid being seen. Lumnus's body would be in the castle's basement, where it would be stowed for the future funeral. Many people would see him and say goodbye for the last time. What is needed is to be publicly presentable. He would be cleaned, his clothes changed, and put on a new fit for a king. A glorious funeral for a glorious king.
The room Lumnus is in is dark, with little light. The warrior managed to get to her without being noticed. He approaches the body and readily recognizes his friend. Ragnarson takes his hand, starts crying hard and says:
I wasn't here to protect you! The fault is mine! I don't know what to do... You've always guided me and given advice all these years... And now you're gone like that…
The sadist's sadness is great, but he wipes his tears with his sleeve and proceeds to the analysis of the dead king's body. He first finds out the cut he killed. In the belly region. The cut is deep, so much so that it pierced the body. So clearly it was a high quality sword. There is no sign of poisoning. Apparently, Lumnus fought his assassin before the final blow, as there are other cuts and bruises on his body.

Ragnarson, now look at the king's nails. There are scalps on them. A brown color, different from the king's long black. Why would the king put his hands on the head of someone who came to kill you? The answer could only be one. Lumnus recognized his murderer and further, he tried to reason with his executioner. Could it be that the king knew his assassin? an old enemy or some traitor? Many questions run through the mind.
Reportedly, the time of death was between six and seven in the evening. And the body was found after seven o'clock. Which concludes that the fight and the conversation between the two was long. Who could this acquaintance be and what did they speak at this time? Impossible to get any answer without any clue. The murder weapon would be essential. Maybe he could give Ragnarson some direction, but she hasn't been found yet and a suspect or killer himself hasn't been found either.
The warrior puts one of his hands on his head, worried, because he doesn't know what to do, since he has no north. Until he hears a noise. Someone is approaching the room. Ragnarson immediately looks for some corner to hide. He would be very suspicious if he were seen near the king's body, as no one knows he is there and he is not supposed to be. The dark room will definitely help him. He hides and enters a strong-looking man in warrior garb. And he says:
No use hiding your coward! Did you really think you would walk through the castle unnoticed? Come on… Reveal yourself before me! - ragnarson hears this from his corner and says in a low voice to himself: I recognize this voice...
With no option, Ragnarson rises from where he was hiding and shows his face to the one who claims him. They both look at each other for a moment, but no one recognizes each other. The man who just entered asks:
So... who are you and what are you doing here ... Will it be that way? ... You're wearing a guard outfit but apparently not one!
At this point, the man in front of Ragnarson draws his sword. A battle was to come. Tall in stature, short black hair and young. The man was sure Ragnarson was involved in the king's murder. And the warrior couldn't blame him. Entering the castle like that was a calculated risk, but now Ragnarson would have to face the consequences against a possible acquaintance. The voice was familiar but still difficult to associate with the name.
Ragnarson is forced to draw his sword, and is the same companion of all these years. The lionbite. After years of not using it, the time had finally come, but it wouldn't be to kill this time. She was not made to kill people from his realm or innocent people. The enemy in front of him looks intently at that sword and immediately recognizes it and says:
This is a beautiful imitation… Hmm…
The man in front of Ragnarson still didn't understand the danger ahead. Negligence or courage, not yet known. The unknown man goes after Ragnarson and the battle begins. The exchange of swords is balanced for a moment. It is clear that both are studying each other, in these first forays. The two realize that they are not dealing with anyone and that they are both experienced. The warrior is now the one who goes up and tests the young man in front of him. And again a tie occurs and both fall back. But this time Ragnarson realizes that he has fought this man before.
The fighting style is familiar to someone he's trained before. A subordinate perhaps. It's still too early to say. While Ragnarson thinks about who could be this known man from his past, the same goes back to the warrior:
you fight very well for a guard! My suspicions about you increase even more and now I'm sure you have something to do with murdering the king! …
Ragnarson avoids a conversation with the opponent up front. He wants to keep it as discreet as possible. His warrior life was practically another life. Many years without war. Ragnarson was no longer the sadist he had been. In the years he was away, he enjoyed his life of peace and happiness as a normal person.
The privilege of watching his children grow up and love his wife every day was wonderful and he doesn't regret it. Lumnus realized the warrior needed this. A simple act that makes a huge difference. Give up your greatest warrior so he could be happy. You could say selfish too. However, the peace he perpetuated did not make it necessary to have men like Ragnarson. The young man, still surprised, says:
It's impossible for you to be Ragnarson… You stole that sword from him.
The warrior's opponent faithfully believes the sword was stolen, so he also believes it to be original as well. The weight it exerts on the enemy is unparalleled. The young man was perceptive and had his keen senses to accomplish this. Ragnarson begins to believe that the young man belongs to the elite or is royalty. There are a few possibilities in his mind. Ragnarson thinks of a plan to find out who the person is. And for the third time, both go to another clash.
This time, Ragnarson goes with an open chest and makes moves that leave his guard wide open to a counterattack, no doubt on purpose and his opponent noticed right away. But without knowing the reason, he only defends himself from the impetus made. Until he gets hit from his left and off balance for a moment. The time it takes to take the man in front of him down and put his sword to his throat, and then he says with a smile on his face:
Your left side… After all these years it remains your weak point… Erik Uncle…
At this point, there is silence in the room where they both are and Erik jumps up to his mentor and inspiration and gives him a big hug. Such a gesture shows how much the prince missed Ragnarson. The warrior had taught Erik how to fight as a child. An unexpected encounter that brought a lot of happiness to both of them.
On Ragnarson's side, the fact that he could see the king's son again after years and the prince see his “uncle,” who clearly had no kinship but nurtured a passion and confidence as if he were his own father. Erik says:
I don't know what to do... With my father, the king is dead now... The realm is plunged into chaos. Please… stay and help us!
Erik's despair is understandable, he has just lost his father and would likely be the kingdom's next successor. This, incidentally, would still be evaluated by the top. It's likely that everything will be resolved in a few days after the funeral. The warrior tries to calm him down, puts his hands on his shoulders and says:
I went into the castle to find out who killed our king and avenge him. With all my strength, I will seek revenge. It doesn't matter who it is! Uncle… Where have you been all this time and why only now did you appear? I took my family away. I didn't want my kids to live like me. We've been on earth this whole time. They couldn't find us there. Lumnus and I met once a year. I was here to visit him when I was surprised by his death. I understand… So… Do you have any clues or anything that might help me? I analyzed the king's body but couldn't find any clues. Unfortunately not…
Both sad, because there is no clue so far. Erik approaches his father's body and puts a hand to his face and the sadness mixed with anger again comes. The more they both think, the more questions arise. Because now? What does the killer want with this? From what kingdom was he ordained? Questions arose and frustration took over. Eriksen looks at Ragnarson and says:
My father always admired you and saw you as a friend… He recounted his great deeds in battle. And in part I was inspired by that so that I could also become a warrior who could protect the kingdom. But my father always wanted me to train my head more than my body... Yes… A glorious man… I owe him my life. - A dramatic pause occurs with both looking at Lumnus and recalling several moments together. Ragnarson then asks - By the way, where is your sister? She's with the council... Looks like she saw the killer today. But she couldn't see any faces. They're trying to make her remember his face, but it's a waste of time Um… let's talk to her. Maybe I can get something... But I want to do it without attracting the attention of others here. I have to investigate this with a full description. We are dealing with a potential war! Okay… I'll escort you to her room and drop you off there. While I go get her and we all talk together. You will be my personal guard until then.
Ragnarson nods and agrees to the plan. Both leave the room and walk together to the princess's quarters. On the way there, no one suspects them, much less recognizes Ragnarson, who is wearing a guard helmet that helps to cover his face, making it difficult to associate or recognize. But everyone knows Prince Eric, and he is suddenly stopped by a council member who has been looking for him.
The top member in front of them was an old acquaintance. Siegfried was his name. One of the oldest members of the summit and one that has great influence. Adept at old models, a conservative, that is, he often did not support the ideas of the former King Lumnus who always came with innovations and an open mind. The apex was the peace between Asgard and the realm of giants, Jotunheim. The elder never trusted the Asgardians, considering them cunning and dirty, who would come up with a plan for his annihilation at any moment. Even more so with the explosive son of Odin who has now disappeared on the throne.
Prince… the summit needs to meet with you immediately to detail your coronation and other pertinent matters But… my father just died and the killer could still be around… Yes, prince. But the future of millions of inhabitants is in your hands right now
Erik is clearly angry at Siegfried's lack of sensitivity, but he can't help it. The prince's desire was to punch this old man in the face, even if he wasn't polite to hit the elderly. But, this was not the time to use fists or swords, but head. Meet with sister Bella who could possibly have a clue, since she saw the killer. With his hands tied, Erick sees no choice but to leave Ragnarson, and tells him:
Guard! Look for my sister and bring it to this meeting too! Yes sir! - The elder immediately interrupts Erick saying: It won't be necessary, prince! The conversation will be about the next successor to the throne, who is automatically the lord by the line of succession because he is the eldest son! - This elder manages to get Erick once again mad, but he holds back his anger again. And says to soldier: Right… Go to my sister and I want to talk to her right away! May she find me in my rooms! I believe she is in the great hall. Yes, prince!
Ragnarson understood what Erick's intentions were with this message immediately. He wants the warrior to go to his sister and take him to his room as a way to lose. An improvisation in relation to the original plan, but grossly the same result. Only the sadist will have to risk it again if he gets noticed. Erick and Siegfried go in opposite directions to the council meeting room and the king. A room in which royals, dome and king meet, but this time the sister is left out. Which is very strange to Ragnarson.
Ragnarson begins to recall one of the king's conversations about who would be ideally suited to assume the throne in a hypothetical future. Lumnus raised Both sons very well and loved the kingdom, but the methodology would be different depending on which one it was. Bella was always more rational and intelligent, which made her believe a lot in her abilities and not trust the weaker people or people next to her. A haughtiness sometimes occurred. Erick is also smart, but impulsive, which makes him push to attack first and ask questions later.
Lumnus had never told anyone at the top or his wife before his death who he would choose to be king at worst, with the exception of Ragnarson. In the king's view, the children still had a lot to grow. And both didn't deserve the throne yet. Before he died, Lumnus left his successor open. He couldn't automatically be the eldest son as tradition says. Some board members liked that decision. But others don't. Clearly the ones who didn't like it, which is even the aforementioned Siegfried.
The king's council was clearly divided. Those who want Erick as king are because they believe he will lead the kingdom with a firm hand, as well as being a remarkable warrior, but the main reason is because the prince could be malleable or manipulated by the council. Bella has the characteristics of her father, adept at peace, diplomacy and an open mind for harmony between all realms, and the other part of the council was adept at that. Continuing in the king's footsteps was fundamental to Jotunheim's future.
Already separated from Erick, Ragnarson, while thinking about his conversation with the king in the past, was already on his way to the great hall where he would meet Bella. Upon arriving, the warrior sees from afar a woman with extravagant beauty and who stood out among all there. Without doubt it was Bella, the king's daughter, the princess of the giants. A long time has passed since Ragnarson last saw her.
With her disappearance many years ago, the warrior only heard of the princess's development through the deceased king. She has clearly grown a lot, once a girl and now a woman in full and strong. She gestured with other people present in the hall and everyone listened to her. Just like the king said. Ragnarson approaches Bella and says:
Princess… Yes Your brother wants to talk to you right away! The princess needs to go to his rooms immediately! Right…
Bella looks at the guard who called her for a moment and starts to accompany him to his brother's room. Most of the way there they both don't say anything. But the princess starts to slow down her steps and asks the guard:
Did my brother happen to mention what he wants? No, my lady! The prince only informed that he wanted the lady immediately in his quarters and that I should escort her Um… And who is he with now? With Siegfried… Ugh… That rat!
Ragnarson appreciates the princess's insight. She probably noticed that the advisor had called her brother to talk about the succession to the throne. Her father's body has barely cooled off and she is already watching the articulation of part of the council in front of her. A war could happen depending on what is discovered. The elders will waste no time and put on the throne whoever is most susceptible to war, Erik.
Ragnarson and Bella arrive at their brother's room and just as he is about to open the door. Someone attacks Ragnarson from behind which causes him to be pushed inside. The warrior thinks of no other hypothesis than the one discovered, but by whom and how? Ragnarson gets up immediately after falling and sees his enemy already trying to land several punches, he dodges most of it, some fit, but the warrior tries to impose his counterattack and lands a kick that pushes him away from the room. The princess is watching the fight up close and says:
Stop fighting!
The man who is fighting Ragnarson is without a shadow of a doubt a warrior too. It won't be a simple fight and he may well have called for reinforcements, this fight would only be to slow him down and surround him. The mysterious man then says:
Princess! I've never seen this man in my life, let alone as a guard! It is certainly related to the death of King Lumnus! Wait…
The unknown man charges at Ragnarson again and punches are exchanged and landed. Pushed back again the sadist's opponent is, without patience he pulls a dagger. And Ragnarson changes his stance. He raises his arms higher. A preparation for a naked knife fight. The focus is only to defend yourself. The man goes up for the third time. Side, vertical and diagonal cuts are attempted, but all blocked by Ragnarson. As a last attempt, the opponent grabs the warrior and pushes him to the ground. At this point, the unknown man has the knife about to pierce Ragnarson's throat, but he holds back the attempt with both hands. Bella, who saw everything, suddenly screams:
EINAR! STOP! DON'T YOU SEE UNCLE RAGNARSON YOU'RE FIGHTING? What ?
After hearing this, Einar jumps to the side and looks intently at the face of the man in front of him. A mixture of happiness and anger surfaces. Einar doesn't cry for his friend who he thought was dead, he's alive before his eyes, but the emotion is too strong to be contained. Both get up and face each other again. And leave for the hug. Ragnarson and Einar owed their lives to each other after countless battles, especially the castle. After the tight hug, Einar punches Ragnarson in the stomach and says:
Motherfucker! You were alive all this time and you didn't send any news! Ha… maybe I deserve… this… ha
Now it's Bella who goes over to Ragnarson to hug him. Both of Lumnus's sons had great affection for Ragnarson, for having taught them to fight and for the stories they had heard from their father, when he was still alive, every night before they went to sleep. A meeting that came up with several feelings, but the reason could not be the worst possible. Ragnarson realizes that Bella realized her identity before she revealed it. Her intention was to show her identity after entering Erick's room, but she realized this long before. Curious, the warrior asks:
Bella… How did you know it was me? As soon as I saw him… I noticed immediately! - And the princess keeps explaining - Your uncle's aura… She is unique… I may not have seen you in a long time but I still remember… And then I saw your necklace, which has the image of your family… And finally to confirm… My brother is giving you orders to find me... He never does that... He always looks for me directly. So I confirmed my suspicion. Wow... I'm positively surprised, but scared too!
Ragnarson underestimated Bella's intelligence at the time, but Einar was not at all surprised. He had lived with her for a long time, so she was already notorious for her feats and abilities. Leaving that aside, the warrior changes the subject to the king's death, asking:
It's great to see you two again… Unfortunately in this situation… But let's go to what I saw analyzing the king's body… He talked to the man who killed him for a while, had a fight and then was stabbed with a knife or sword. He knew his killer beyond a shadow of a doubt, but I have no idea who would want him dead right now. Maybe it's an act of revenge…
Einar and Bella analyses what Ragnarson said, the fact that it was a sword was known to them already, but that it was an acquaintance and that the king talked to the assassin was new. Why would the king argue with his assassin? And what did they discuss? Many questions arise and no answers come to light. Ragnarson interrupts their thinking and asks:
Bella… Did you get to see the right killer? Couldn't see any faces? No… I couldn't see anything! I see… But did you see anything in him that you could identify? mercenary, warrior or trait from some other realm? It wasn't possible… He was wearing all dark clothes, I believe he could disguise himself! Any idea how he got into the castle? None...but I have a theory that he disguised himself as one of the soldiers or members of the castle to infiltrate. Castle security was very good. You yourself were discovered at least twice right? Really… It happened three times… I believed it was me getting old… Anyway, didn't you see anything different in this castle today? Something that caught your attention? Anything…
The princess and the former vice captain start reminiscing about their entire day, trying to remember something unusual that happened. The human mind can be deceptive many times. A normal person might see something, repaired, but ignored as irrelevant. The brain automatically discards what isn't relevant, but that doesn't mean it can't be retrieved. And that's exactly what happens. Einar raises his voice:
Today I saw a man using a very peculiar sword here inside the castle! A guard was using it. The sword had a very detailed hilt that I had never seen before… By the gods… How did I not notice this before? Can you draw this sword? I can!
In Erik's room there is a table, the three of them go to it, Einar sits down, gets some paper and ink to draw the sword he saw. While he was drawing. Someone knocks on the door and enters. Erik who had just finished his meeting with the council piece. He goes deeper into the room and says:
Have you progressed in anything? Einar is going to draw the likely weapon that killed your father! Maybe she can point us to something or give us some direction! I understand…
The princes and Ragnarson eagerly wait for Einar to finish his drawing. Everyone is having faith that the image of the weapon that killed the king will lead to the murderer. This is the only clue so far, after analyzing the body, listening to people who were at the time of the murder, patrols, enclosures.
Einar finishes drawing the sword that killed the king. It's a not very long sword, but not too short with four stones either. One at each end and one in the middle of the cable. On the left the stone was green, on the right purple, on the south end it was yellow and finally in the middle it was red. The four of them look at the drawing, not understanding who might be the owner of this sword, but Ragnarson recognizes it and jumps back in surprise. Bella worried asks:
Do you recognize this sword? Do you know who is ? Yes, I do. This sword is Asgardian. It belongs to one of Odin's warriors, now Thor, the current king. He made some swords like that and gave them away when a soldier or warrior deserved it... This is crazy! Is Thor declaring war on us all of a sudden? What does he want with this? Where is his father, Odin? The treaty that Lumnus and he made had to be obeyed by him too. I don't know… We'll have to go to him to talk…
Erick at the moment is very angry and no peace comes to mind, he would kill any Asgardian who was in front of him. Reason completely left his body. He wants war for the death of his beloved father and king. The assassination of a king of a kingdom is the green light for war, without exception. To execute the highest authority in a country is to ask for it. And he says out loud:
WAR! I WILL KILL WHOEVER! EVEN THOR DOESN'T ESCAPE DEATH! - Einar intervenes in Erick's fury by putting his hands on his arms saying: Calm down, we don't know if it was the Asgardians yet. It could be a trap or a distraction! We have to call a summit meeting immediately and then Thor! Hmm…
While the three of them argued, Bella was quietly thinking. A war could break out in the transition to the next king's succession. What's more, a part of the council wants Erik as the next king. Which would surely lead to war. Siegfried would use the feelings of anger and sadness to convince the other members to vote for the prince to be named king, because without a shadow of a doubt this is what his brother wants and will accomplish.
Siegfried, who no longer likes the Asgardians, would achieve their annihilation and the king manipulable. Of course the counselor is not corrupt, the problem is in the methodology and execution. Siegfried does not support coexisting with Asgardians. He would never choose Bella and she knows it. She wants peace and harmony between the realms above all. Her father's death saddens and brings anger and the desire for revenge, but Lumnus always taught that the kingdom and its inhabitants came first, because kings, councils, wars are left behind, but the kingdom is eternal. Bella addresses her brother saying:
Erick… I know you're sad and angry, but right now we have to work together and use our heads… OUR FATHER JUST DIE! DON'T ASK TO BE CALM!
The sibling fight was something common and known to everyone already. Both were opposites, but similar at the same time. However, this fight is different. When younger, they fought and managed to resolve each other. His fight now involves a nation. Little did the two know that the battle for the throne had started at that very moment between them. Ragnarson, seeing that the atmosphere is tense, intervenes saying:
I've been gone for a long time. I think it's time to stop hiding and go back to my obligations! I will help them in whatever way to look for the king's assassin and whatever the princes need.
The brothers look at the warrior and see the confidence in his eyes. His help will be essential, as well as being of enormous trust. They both know that Ragnarson loved the king and loved his kingdom even though having disappeared all this time no doubt was a very difficult decision.
Let's go before the council and see what we're going to do from now on! - the two brothers say at the same time: Right!
The four in the room are already decided on what to do at that moment. But, one more question hovered in Bella's head, perhaps ragnarson as well. However, the princess's concern was greater in this regard. Odin's whereabouts. Thor's father. He and Lumnus sealed the greatest peace ever, and the former king of Asgard was missing. For Bella, her resurgence would be important. Only Odin would be able to reason with his son to avoid a future war. That said, Bella asks Ragnarson:
Ragnarson… Do you know Odin's whereabouts? I am not sure. He disappeared a long time ago. Rumors said he went to Midgard… Earth. no one knows the exact whereabouts Hmm… Do you think my father might know? Likely… King Lumnus was one of the last people to see Odin. The secret died with your father probably... And unfortunately
Bella remembers that last meeting they had. A few years ago she always listened to her father's meetings. And one of them was with Odin. She also said that at that meeting she heard some strange words that she had never heard before. She forces her mind as much as possible to remember the word spoken by Odin back then. Until she remembers and says out loud:
Brooklyn - The people around you are surprised and your brother asks: what did you say ? Nothing, forget it…

8 152Bloodlines
Bloodlines is the first major story set in the far larger and immensely connected universe known as Infinitum. A group of renegades and misfits take into the sky in their fancy skyship to fulfill the prophecy they don't care about and defeat the Empire they care even less about. In the process, they learn things (they would rather not) of the fucked up Universe, dead gods, and the future that holds no mercy. Bloodlines draws inspiration from One Piece. But in the bigger picture, Bloodlines is one of many stories set in Cosmere-like universe where plots stretch beyond planets and star systems and stakes are higher than godhood (like in Malazan chronicles). Currently, I am planning to finish the first arc [Bandit Arc], add 10k words interlude with some revelations, then publish a story happening elsewhere. Then I will be back to write the second arc. For now, the Fifth Region has 8 arcs planned. Officially, there are 5 regions. The Fifth Region is not the shortest but is far from the longest regions. - PS. Pay attention to flavor text.
