《Between Gods And Mortals》Chapter 4 - The Moment of Truth
Advertisement
In the morning of the next day, everyone is gathered again in the center of the castle at the bottom and at the top spread over the three sectors. This time there is no speech that can be made to cheer the men up on this third day. Every soldier present there arrived at this day purely on merit. Today's battle was doomed to failure before it even took place. There was no hope of victory.
The vice captains chose not to deceive their subordinates and tell the whole truth discussed the night before with Ragnarson and his spy, Moses. It was well known that the king gave no sign of news and that reinforcements would not come. Different feelings spread with such a novelty. Some refuse to believe that King Lumnus the great sage has abandoned them. While others are angry at having been used as bait in the war, they have played the role very well. What the giant army has achieved is an unprecedented feat. Secure and defeat the army with at least twice the number of differences bordered on impossible. The enemy himself believed that he would finish the war within a day. But it will take three days.
Ragnarson leaves his quarters and walks up to the speech platform again, just like on other days. He tried to think of words to tell his soldiers all night to motivate them or at least believe him for another day. But he failed. He doesn't believe that anything he says can calm them down or set them on fire, but in the general's view, making mistakes was better than indecision. And he says:
Gentlemen… I know you are already aware of our situation, but I say so with all certainty. I'LL NOT GIVE UP. I will fight to the end. I decided to believe in the king. I know he has a plan for us. Lumnus would never abandon us like this.
Ragnarson's sincerity surprises his soldiers again. What makes many there think that war for their general is his specialty and vocation. The size of talent in swordsmanship and management is second to none. Lumnus' confidence in him is not inexplicable or a matter of surprise.
The general's speech works but does not prevent morale from remaining low. The soldiers may not be endowed with high intelligence or anything like that, but they understand the situation they find, and that what was already semi-impossible on the second day has become impossible now. Ragnarson begins giving orders to his subordinates, ending the usual pre-battle meeting:
Gentlemen… In your positions!
The general ends his speech and walks towards the northern sector, which he is responsible for. For the third day battle there would be no strategy or use of traps. It was clear that the enemy would come with everything this time and that the giants' only weapons would be willpower and their swords. Dying in battle for many was the greatest honor possible, the glory of dying in battle, doing what was good, was an incredible feeling for many soldiers.
Ragnarson stands at the edge of the castle with a serious look on his face and a wolfskin coat covering him, watching a knight approach the castle with his escort. The sadist imagined that some diplomatic ploy might happen and that is why he is not surprised by the arrival. The man orders his horse to stop and looks towards Ragnarson and says:
I'm General Olaf… Congratulations on surviving these two days, but we both know there won't be a third day, even luck has its limit… - Ragnarson interrupts the general's speech to say: Pardon ? Luck ? He clearly doesn't know what he's talking about or he's blind. Did he get his job through inheritance or wealth?

General Olaf did not want to praise Ragnarson obviously, but he and his soldiers who were there at his side for diplomatic talks knew very well that the warrior Ragnarson had killed thousands of his comrades and strategize for the other two flanks, managing to protect them from the surtrs invasion. in the castle and still defeating thousands of soldiers in those two days. His acknowledgment of his achievements as “lucky” sounded unintelligent, lay and cynical. If the two generals were talking to each other there, much was due to Ragnarson, The Sadist, who never thought of giving up and believed in his companions. General Olaf then says:
Very well Ragnarson… you made it this far… And now? You know that you and your men will die soon, but it can be avoided... What do you offer ? Our king is very kind and that's why he wants you to turn yourself in and be his war advisor. It's a great offer Ragnarson… The king is kind and will let you and your soldiers alive, they will be the king's servants but they will stay alive above all! Olaf… there is no honor in what you propose… death for me is much better than betraying my principles and my king. Your king is not here! You and your soldiers have no chance of surviving another day or two at most... What my king proposes is far beyond dignity... It is the salvation of his men and yours. You will simply follow your warrior journey, but in another realm... If it's that simple… why not?
Ragnarson starts laughing and Olaf's natural reaction starts laughing too and Olaf's soldiers pull up the laughing corner, meanwhile Ragnarson turns his back and picks up a spear that was nearby. Those below him could not see that Ragnarson had suddenly taken up a spear. The Sadist begins to head towards the edge of the castle, with the enemy soldiers still laughing, he throws his spear into General Olaf's mouth. The spear hits the mouth of the man who was laughing and talking a lot of nonsense in full, penetrating at least half of the spear, which automatically makes him fall off his horse, with no sign of life, and the soldiers beside him get scared and run away immediately, a another soldier even falls from his horse due to fright and blood gushing, stagnant they were and ran to save their lives, but Ragnarson only had one target in mind at that moment, the one who proposed a betrayal to his king and friend. King Lumnus.
What Ragnarson had just done was an act of enormous disrespect, cowardly and unexpected in its entirety. The warrior killed a general who proposed peace and salvation for his men. The giant soldiers who saw this are frightened and begin to believe the words their general said before the war. These weren't just empty words. He truly believed that King Lumnus had a plan. And that he would die trying. The flame the giants needed came. The men in the castle learned that it was better to die fighting than to surrender to the enemy. Death was far more honorable.
The three flanks are positioned and prepared for battle. With their shields and swords raised. Just waiting for the enemy to come. From a distance, you can see the two towers arriving and a catapult approaching with a large stone attached, clearly to destroy the tower that closed the entrance and knock down the gate that was put back the day before, but fragile with a previous collapse.
Several trumpets are blown like the day before, but this time it's for a general attack. A unitary charge and with all the men and tools available. As the ground attack approached. A voice from the southern sector of the castle calls out to Ragnarson:
My lord! You have to see this now! - The general runs immediately towards the man who called him. And when he arrives, the soldier hands him a spyglass and says: Take it! Watch what's coming!
Ragnarson uses the telescope to observe what is coming from so far away, which is impossible with the naked eye. It is now possible to see that three enemy ships are heading towards the castle. An attack from the south that was unfeasible for the surtrs, given the delay it takes to cross the coast, would not be worth the effort. But on the first day General Olaf asked for a guarantee. He sent an eagle with a message, calling for maritime reinforcements. It would take at least two days, he didn't make it until the third, but it was enough for the now dead general.
Ragnarson puts his hand to his head and scratches. The situation got even more dire. An attack from all four sides of the castle would take place in no time. The three enemy ships would still take at least an hour to arrive. The general decides to keep the previous positions and only order the next quartermaster:
Strengthen the southern sector with two hundred men! Get a little from each sector! Yes, sir!
The steward runs immediately to carry out the orders given to his general. While the sadist goes back to his responsible sector and sees how the situation is. He arrives and sees that the catapult has taken the lead and is about to be used. Knowing that the catapult would be used to destroy the tower and open the way, the general has already removed the soldiers who were at the bottom of the castle, taking care of the gate. So that no allies were hit. And soon after, they returned to their previously planned positions.
The catapult launches a stone that flies towards the castle and immediately breaks the gate, freeing the way for the surtrs. And now all enemies run towards the castle and towers too. The battle is about to begin and Ragnarson holds tight the amulet that bears the drawing of his family and looks up at the sky and says:
May it be the will of the Gods!
The general looks in the direction of his vice captains as well to see how emotional they are. First, Eriksen, who is incredibly cool on the outside, but without a shadow of a doubt fear and uncertainty hover over his head. Since his death the day before, no one more than he wants to win this war and go home for good wine. The same has always been known for his affection for alcohol. Being motivated to drink his superior's newly cultivated wines might seem like a silly reason, but it was enough for Eriksen to motivate him on this third day when defeat is certain.
On the other side, Einar is sweating profusely. Clearly nervous, this could be the last day of his life, so it's normal that he's not overflowing with tranquility like Eriksen. It is noteworthy that the vice captain wanted to attack his superior the day before and perhaps even disobey him, which could be treated as treason and mutiny. Crimes punishable by death. But, Ragnarson ignored it, the general knew his subordinate was just nervous at the moment. And who could blame him? He felt abandoned by the king.
The two vice-captains meet Ragnarson's eyes, and they both nod. The sadist can see that they are both willing to sacrifice their lives today and also nods back, which means he trusts them. After countless battles, men who fight together begin to understand each other just by looking. These last two days of battle were unique in each of their lives. The three went through near-death experiences.
The towers approach and the battle of their lives literally begins. Ragnarson, the sadist, wastes no time and goes after his enemies. Cutting, beheading, decapitating, mutilating all your enemies ahead. Keeping that pace after two very intense days was really a surprise. The general will clearly give his all today, knowing there can be no tomorrow or that his king has some plan in mind to save them. But when will it be? Today? Tomorrow? Tomorrow will be too late perhaps. The glory is eternal. Death through fight was the only answer.
Brutal deaths occur everywhere and in all sectors. The castle that was once peaceful and commercial, has become a pit of brutality beyond measure. Blood, arms, legs, heads and even eyes are visible on the ground. The god of war should be very happy seeing this and the goddess of creation in deep sadness. Men who died in battle go from this life to the next happily, knowing that they honored their duties and died as best they could on the field of war.
Einar also gives it his all today, even with the downsides about surtrs, you'll still have to remember that his wound from the first day still hasn't healed. He uses a shield in his injured right arm and an ax in the other. There is a huge difference between fighting with your dominant arm, in your case your right-handed one, and using your left-handed one. His left-handed movements were slower and less lethal. The vice captain, like Ragnarson, does not hide behind the lines. He fights along with his men.
Eriksen is in the same situation. The difficulties that others have, he also has. Everyone is struggling with their lives at risk. The deputy captain kills and decapitates a surtr that comes towards him, but starts to retreat and looks towards the southern sector. He wants to know the situation of the ships coming to invade. He watches and calculates that it will arrive soon. thirty minutes maybe.
The battle has only just begun, but slowly the surtrs are taking over and gaining the upper hand. The greater proportion of soldiers and rested people has a negative effect on the giants, who, unlike the enemy, are not fighting three days in a row and in fewer numbers. And with that, more and more the castle is taken over by surtrs. Ragnarson's army would be swallowed up if he didn't do something. Just because it's impossible doesn't mean it has to be that easy for the opponent. Ragnarson in despair shouts:
THEY ARE ALL NOW IN THE SOUTH SECTOR! WE WILL DEFEND FROM THERE! SHIEELD WAAALL!
The training is immediately carried out so that the men there in the eastern sector migrate to the southern sector without any further casualties. Eriksen and Einar see their general's move and soon begin to do the same. Little by little, they reach the southern sector. The final battle will be there. Enemy ships will dock there too. The minutes of life for Ragnarson and his vice-captains are numbered.
The three pillars of this one meet in the southern sector and for the first time in these three days. The trio fights side by side. The three sectors are all together. Funneled and surrounded by enemies. It becomes harder and harder to hold back the enemy's momentum.
The shield wall ahead could collapse at any time. Blocking and hitting the opponent was the basic principle of the shield wall. Without it it would only be a general battle, where individuality prevails and luck. The formation contemplates the strength, unity, commitment and individuality of the collective. However, Ragnarson notes that this union is about to end and in an act of desperation he shouts:
Einar and Eriksen! Keep the shield wall in position! Don't let it give in or fall! Yes sir! Let's go! - Says Einar.
The remaining squads and captains try in every way to hold the surtrs' momentum. But the fall is inevitable and the shield wall, the so-called giant, falls. The battle comes to a head. Every man for himself now and kills anyone ahead. A real genocide takes place in the castle. Surtrs and giants scattered on the ground. Ragnarson, Eriksen and Einar go to the last battle of their lives. They scream, loud and hard. Accepting the fate to come. With the moral up there for being his last moments alive. The giants manage to kill a lot of surtrs, if it was any day before that it would be a commendable feat. But for every enemy defeated, two appear in its place. Tiredness, pressure and numerical disadvantage have settled the difference and now the giant army is almost completely annihilated.
Friends, comrades, and others from the army fall alongside Ragnarson. He looks in the direction to his right side and sees Eriksen, his deputy captain, take a hard cut in the back. A cut that starts at your shoulder and goes down to your lower back. Which makes you get down on your knees immediately. He spits blood and screams in pain. Their eyes meet. Ragnarson runs towards his friend, companion and subordinate. But it 's too late.
The general sees the enemy's sword cut through his deputy captain, killing him immediately. In a simultaneous reflex, Ragnarson grabs a small ax from his waist and hurls it at the head of the man who had just killed Eriksen. Strong enough to penetrate your skull and no time to dodge. The sadist holds his vice captain in his arms, hold his head as he looks in his direction and hears him say:
Sorry, sir! I won't be able to drink the beautiful wines you promised! Eriksen…
The vice captain closes his eyes and his head drops. Which means his soul has already left his body. Eriksen's last words touch Ragnarson's heart. He who did it for others in the last three days, now he gets it. A teardrop is seen coming out of the General's eye. Who can't believe that the reason he continued to fight with you in this war was because he could have wine with him.
Einar sees what is happening and a sadness hits his heart too. The man he owes his life for two days in a row will eventually die, but there's no time to grieve. The vice captain, still alive, fights fiercely with his shield and sword. Until he is surrounded by five men. A surtr tries to attack Einar with a sword but he blocks, but a kick hits him, making him lose his balance and another soldier removes the shield from Einar's possession. He takes a small ax now and gets up trying to use both weapons with some difficulty due to the wounds of the first day.
Now it is Einar who prepares for his life pass. He screams and runs towards the five men to kill them. He sticks the ax into a man and catches it with his sword, but he receives a sword slash that didn't catch him full, but that hit his wound. Enough for him to lose his balance and fall again. The surtr raises his sword, signifying that he was about to execute the deputy captain of the giants, an enormous effect. Einar's reputation was enviable. The surtr executioner wants to decorate his death, make it poetic. Nothing better than killing his head. Einar accepts what is to come, closes his eyes and begins to pray:
Thank you for making my death commendable my gods! I am prepared to join Eriksen and my other teammates!
The executioner's sword that was above his shoulders starts to descend to cut off Einar's head, but the vice-captain's head is not seen on the ground, but the executioner's hands and sword. Einar opens his eyes to hear a sword fall, blood fly towards him and none of it is his. Einar sees that Ragnarson has just mutilated the executioner and slit his throat.
The other two men go to the general and are quickly killed, but for a second the general was distracted and didn't notice the arrival of another enemy. The surtr goes to stab Ragnarson, but is saved by Einar who pushes him and uses the enemy's own knife to slit his throat. The general helps his deputy captain to his feet and says:
No other vice captain of mine will sacrifice his life for me today! Right, my lord!
Even stopping the surtrs who were going to kill Einar at that time, the situation is even worse. The giants are all mutilated and three-quarters are speculated dead. Piles of the bodies of his former companions are formed. By saving Einar. Ragnarson only postponed the inevitable. Completely surrounded again. Einar and Ragnarson raise their swords, for it is decided for them that they die fighting. Even when you hear the noise of an explosion coming from your back.
Ragnarson and Einar look out to sea and see that the three surtr ships have just been destroyed and that they are on fire. From a distance it is possible to see at least twenty ships of the giants, there are certainly more of them. The flag with the proper colors of the kingdom was raised, making identification easy.
The surtrs who were invading the castle turn their attention to its back. And come several men falling and dying. A ground attack was taking place as well. Causing several of these to fall and lose attention to the southern sector. Ragnarson realizes that more allies have arrived. An attack orchestrated by sea and land. The men the general sees are not recognizable yet. But that can be left for later. What mattered was that the reinforcements had arrived and would be safe thanks to it. King Lumnus did not abandon his soldiers and did not break the promise made by Ragnarson. The mutual trust between the two was commendable. Ragnarson seeing this situation says:
I knew you wouldn't leave me Lumnus! I believed in you until my last breath!
Clearly, Lumnus didn't hear Ragnarson's outburst, nor is it known if he might be on the battlefield or on one of those ships, but the sadist's happiness at the turn of events made him snarl, even denoting a certain happiness. He and Einar are still side by side and are trying to catch their breath. But the curiosity to know who would be making the ground attack made him impatient.
He moves to a high place to try to see who the ally was saving them. Ragnarson sees some flags with a golden eagle and is immediately incredulous. The Asgardians were the ones who came to help the giants in this battle. The impossible basically happened. Giants and Asgardians fighting together after years of friction.
And to Ragnarson's surprise, he sees Thor from afar killing several enemies with his Mjolnir. The most powerful weapon in all realms. The powerful weapon that fires lightning is extremely heavy, but extremely light. Magic is something that exists and is well known to know, but its use is extremely difficult. Magic in this world is made through a catalyst and a conductor. The catalyst can occur through magical stones that release powers and the driver is the possessor's weapon. Mjolnir's big card is that it doesn't need magic stones to release its rays and have such strength. She is a magical weapon in her own right. There are very few weapons of this type in this world and also rare are the blacksmiths who manage to build at least one in their lifetime. Furthermore, the powers of such weapons are unimaginable and may have a wide range of possibilities. Warrior weapons are usually made by dwarves, the ultimate experts in creating the best weapons. There are other weapons similar to Mjolnir, but they don't come close to its destructiveness.
The origin of Mjolnir is unknown. Legend has it that it was passed down by the gods to Odin's grandfather thousands of years ago. But it's not conclusive. The hammer is passed down to the king of Asgard from generation to generation. The hammer then passed Odin and his son Thor. The lionbite is a magic sword, but Ragnarson doesn't use it due to the large amount of energy that is required. The Lionbite's pommel also allows the placement of magic stones. The one that Ragnarson uses is the hardness, which guarantees rigidity to the possessor's sword. Allowing the cut to be precise and not break.
Thor and Ragnarson were mortal enemies. Several times they have fought from opposite sides. They never managed to kill each other obviously. Being helped by his opponent was a sign of humiliation for the sadist, but the kingdom and the king come first. The fact that King Lumnus had achieved an unlikely alliance with Asgard meant that new times were to come. A peace treaty was made, but it was a treaty in which only both parties did not fight. What Lumnus had to offer for such an alliance was still a mystery to Ragnarson, but without a doubt the price was high. Allying with your main rival is not a simple task. Something happened.
Ragnarson, Einar and the remaining men see the ships full of giants arrive in port and disembark. Several soldiers leave there towards the battle. All bloodthirsty. Despite his fatigue and concern about the alliance, Ragnarson is happy and is also heading into battle. Now with the full advantage of the giant army that has more soldiers and rested.
Thor's hammer or anvil easily destroys surtr turrets and catapults. What the giants had to sacrifice several men and extreme difficulty to destroy. The man with long blond hair and long beard can do it in a few seconds. Something enviable. Ragnarson begins to wonder if his sword would be able to achieve such feats as well. The warrior hadn't extracted all of LionBite's power yet, his power was still a mystery in parts. The large amount of energy demanded from the sword prevents it from enjoying its full potential, so it can only use the stones placed in the pommel.
Surtrs are easily annihilated. The attack behind them and the giant men ahead causes them to be surrounded, to the point that there is no escape. The situation the giants were in a few moments ago is now the surtrs they are in. Basically an exchange of positions.
Thor enters the castle and kills several men in front of him. Mjolnir makes all the difference in the style of the blond Asgardian, who is already strong and the ax still drives and improves. Ragnarson, who has fought Thor on a few occasions, knows how Mjolnir's biggest strength is also his biggest weakness. Without her, a fight between them would be even, but with high chances for Ragnarson to win, as he never depended on the magic of his weapon. Until the time comes that they both see each other. Those who were mortal enemies the other day are now allies. Neither is there to kill the other. The gods write strangely. Thor says to the sadist:
Well, well... Who do we have here? Can't be without my help can you? - Thor is widely known for his sour or idiotic humor, which deeply irritates Ragnarson, who says: Shut your mouth! If it wasn't for King Lumnus you would already have your throat cut… Is this how you appreciate my help? Yes… I don't care about you! Maybe I would rather be saved than you here!
Ragnarson cuts the conversation off and moves forward to kill more surtrs on the way, and takes advantage of this to free himself from the Asgardian prince's unwanted company. Who has an enormous facility to irritate him. The times of peace between giants and Asgardians prevent them from any kind of friction even if deep down they wanted so much.
The war is coming to an end right now. Hemmed in on all sides and outnumbered because of the previous two days. The surtrs are on the verge of annihilation. Even with a larger number than the giants. The damage caused by them was severe. Tiredness and countless casualties took over.
A few hours later, you could see a battlefield full of dead surtrs. The victory was Asgardian and the giants. With the enemies mostly annihilated and happiness and relief rushing through men. Tranquility finally arrives. Ragnarson looks for Einar, looking around and not finding him. The general gets desperate and starts screaming:
YYYYYYYY! - Ragnarson does not hear any voice coming or similar to his vice captain. The worst thing starts to cross his mind, which is the possibility of his partner's death. In an act of desperation he starts looking at the bodies on the ground and in a last attempt, he shouts again: EINAR! H-H-Here!
Ragnarson hears this voice and immediately recognizes Einar's voice, he goes in the direction he heard and tries to look for his deputy captain among so many bodies. He sees Einar's hand outstretched so he can find him. It is found on the bodies of various other soldiers, enemies and allies. Ragnarson removes them from above and helps lift Einar. Who apparently wasn't hurt or severely hurt. He just passed out in battle. Ragnarson looks at him and hugs him tight. Glad he's not dead.
From the ship, he begins disembarking people who didn't fight and who didn't wear warrior clothes. A man with long black hair and wearing a purple outfit also long and full of gold approaches. Ragnarson sees this figure from afar and notices that it is King Lumnus walking towards him. They meet and the general immediately kneels to greet the king. But the same says:
Hi Ragnarson! Good to know he's alive. You can stand up. We will speak as equals. What you and your men did today saved the kingdom. I thank you from the bottom of my heart and most of all I apologize. My king! I believed in your plan to the end!
Ragnarson begins to remember the night he joined Lumnus to debate the war. And that its function would be to hold the enemies for at least a day and that reinforcements would arrive. Einar, Eriksen and Ragnarson led the bait. While Lumnus traded with the Asgardians and dominated the capital. The capital was taken over, but negotiations with the Asgardians took two days, so reinforcements did not arrive until the third day of battle. What caused thousands of deaths from the giants and the thought that their king had abandoned them.
Lumnus laments the death of several men and even a deputy captain, but today's feat was unprecedented and will allow for a peace never seen before in all the kingdoms. The surtrs defeated will have to yield to a peace treaty. The only ones that weren't part of one. What makes the harmony of the other kingdoms unfeasible. The war was won by giants and history was made.
