《Between Gods And Mortals》Chapter 3 - The second day
Advertisement
The next day arrives and all soldiers are positioned to hear Ragnarson's words for yet another battle to come. They are all lined up and quiet in the direction where the general made his speech yesterday. They see a door open and see Ragnarson walk towards the podium. He walks past the soldiers looking each one in the eye and waving to each of the soldiers. Ragnarson realized that his men are with him body and soul, moral is still high but at the same time he knows that the warriors present there were worried. "Can we survive today?" "How will we survive with this handicap?" "As long as Ragnarson believes… I will too" . All these thoughts certainly passed through the soldiers. Ragnarson climbs up on the podium and looks at everyone again and says:
Gentlemen… I will not lie. The battle today will be the most important. As you well know… The enemy will come with all their strength today and it will be a bloody battle. The odds of winning today are low, but if we win, I can guarantee that if we win today… The victory of the war is already ours.
The soldiers were surprised by Ragnarson's words that he preferred sincerity and serenity to outburst and fury. The speech was not as ardent as yesterday, which certainly caused surprise but the soldiers understand that today is not the day for that. All seriousness and coolness will be needed for victory today. Ragnarson raises his LionBite sword and all the warriors raise together. And Ragnarson shouts to his men:
FORWARD!
The men begin to move towards their positions in their respective sectors, today there will be no reserve army and all the rest of the traps that are left will be used today, without exception. Yesterday only the northern flank traps were used to bring down the rams, not counting the bombs that have also been used. Ragnarson starts walking to the northern sector to follow the arrival of the first enemies before heading to his responsible sector. He rests his foot on the edge and poses in a very thoughtful pose. He takes a circular golden object from his pocket and looks at a small design inside it. There's a drawing of four people there. A boy, a girl, a woman and Ragnarson.
The warrior has family too, although being known as "Sadistic" didn't stop him from loving or having passions. His family was very important, as Ragnarson has never had such a love for a woman and she has the same for him. Ragnarson was an orphan and entered the military academy early on. So he never had the love of a mother or father. His parents died in the war against Asgard from what he knew. His mother was a doctor and his father a warrior. Ragnarson's wife's name is Erine. He met her after one of her battles. It was an unusual situation because even though she knew who Ragnarson was she didn't treat him any different or special or get scared. This caught his attention, he became interested in it, and thus began one of his great passions. Thanks to his strong-willed wife beside him, Ragnarson began to have more moral and sentimental balance as well as reason. Without his woman the warrior would have no direction in his life. And to make it even better, she is the mother of their two children. Ragnarson gets lost in his thoughts as he sees Einar approach him and he says:
Are you worried about them, my lord?
I'm always…
Everyone is trusting your plan. Mainly me

It has to work Einar… Because if it doesn't work, I don't know what I'm going to do…
A brief pause occurs between the two when Ragnarson says this to Einar. He has never seen his general with that expression before. Every battle he's had to date has been on the premise of at least a 50% chance of winning. Today the chances of winning are close to 20%. Einar understands that this may be the biggest challenge of their lives, victory today would not mean victory in the war, but survival for the next day to come. The deputy captain puts a hand on Ragnarson's shoulder and squeezes hard without saying anything. It is not necessary to exchange words to understand the message. Ragnarson looks at Einar and sees him holding a sword for today and asks:
Are you really going to fight with your left arm today?
It's the way my lord. I don't give up easily. You know how I am.
I do know… may the gods be with you my dear Einar…
My lord...
Einar nods and turns away from Ragnarson to see the final preparations before the second day's battle. On the way to this he notices that his general has called him a friend. Einar is pleased for a moment that smothers a slight smile but at the same time even more worried. Because he realized that Ragnarson carries a great burden in this battle and war. The trust imposed on him by thousands of soldiers, his vice-captains and especially by King Lumnus caused Ragnarson the great giant warrior to be swayed to the point of showing some nervousness. Which is entirely plausible because he carries all that responsibility to himself.
But he is wrong in Einar's view. He can count on him and Eriksen who are willing to do their best for their general, kingdom and soldiers. The plan was made the night before and if it is followed to the letter, the victory of today's battle will be for the giants. There is no margin for error. The smallest of errors could mean the loss of a flank or sector, and the fall of a sector would basically mean total annihilation.
The ground starts to shake, which catches the attention of Ragnarson and the other vice-captains. They look in the direction where the enemy was encamped and see a huge wave of enemies. As assumed in the strategy plan the day before and thanks to the espionage done, the second day of battle would be the one that the opponent would come in full force to take the castle. Ragnarson shouts to the three sectors of the castle:
IN YOUR POSITIONS SOLDIERS! HOLD TRAPS UNTIL SECOND ORDER!
Unlike the first day, the enemy will not try to invade the castle only with rams and ladders. This time they will try with their biggest trump card. The mobile towers. Tall structures made of wood, iron and other materials were enough to invade the castle, protecting those inside, avoiding the large number of casualties and already placing soldiers inside enemy territory easily. The enemy army comes towards the giants with five of these structures. Ragnarson intends to insure the use of the traps as long as possible. It has to be used at the right time.
As the enemy approaches, the giant archers and spearmen are triggered. Many men immediately fall to the ground. But the enemy is strategically behind your towers or even inside to protect themselves. The towers split and go 2 towards the sector responsible for Ragnarson and another 2 towards Eriksen. There is only one turret heading towards Einar, that's because his sector is where the gate is and the enemy will surely use the ram, and the east flank was the hardest yesterday for the enemy.

The five towers are now glued to the castle. Ragnarson even gave the order to use traps. And a trapdoor falls from the towers above the castle's edge. A bridge between the castle and the turret is made and now the enemy can easily invade the castle via the attached turrets. The enemy screams and they start running towards the giants in front of them. A fierce battle begins. The front line to fight these first soldiers coming from the towers is formed by strong men with shields and swords and even spears. Ragnarson's plan was to form a strong front line to fight this first wave and push them back to the towers. The enemy may have the advantage with the turrets, but their access becomes limited by the short space they provide.
The giants do not give up their position and manage to eliminate the first waves of the five castle towers. The killing and carnage begins in the very first acts. The three sectors manage to hold off attacks until Ragnarson yells:
SHIELD WAAALL! - And the soldiers who were there also repeat Ragnarson's words so that the other flanks also hear:
SHIELD WALL!
The other two sectors of the castle listen and form too, as they already knew what was to come. The three sectors are positioned to perform the next planned act and start pushing enemies into their turrets. The focus was not on killing them, but funneling them and forcing them back inside their respective towers. The enemy even with the greatest number of advantages cannot avoid the advance of the giants and gradually return to the towers. Ragnarson, who didn't run away from the battle, was on the front line pushing the enemies there along with the others, waiting for the right moment to give the next order.
Difficulties begin to come and in the western sector of Eriksen they cannot repel the enemy from the tower that was there. The first line is broken and Ragnarson is forced to carry out the next step of the plan and shouts:
TRAPS. ALL. NOW!
Four squads were responsible for the traps. One for each sector of the castle and for the gate. They listen to the message from their commander to their relay through a signal already planned and known to them. The men responsible for the east and west sector take jars of oil used the day before. There is not enough to take down all the towers. The head of the northern sector picks up some jars of unknown content that were completely closed.
The soldiers from the responsible squad carry the jars to the front line and there they wait for the right moment to pour the oil. The shield wall of its last strength to repel the enemies once and for all into the towers and suddenly two soldiers who were in the formation open a space and the specialists through the traps throw the jars in the towers and using a cloth with fire they throw it in the oil that has spread and a strong flame starts to appear.
The jars that were used in the northern sector were a strong-smelling green poison. Extremely lethal when touching human skin. This poison comes from Niflheim, where there are several species of poisonous plants and dangerous enemies as well. The men who were climbing the tower in the north began to fall and scream loudly in pain. The poison only needs to touch the skin to feel the immediate pain and when it falls into the bloodstream, death is already certain.
The strategy made for the northern sector was based on the fact that the enemy would try to break down the gates with all certainty and that it would be necessary to reinforce both above, where the towers would come as well as below. Although there are 2 turrets on each flank, the northern sector is the one with the most soldiers given the uncertainty of which deal the opponent would make. It was known that they could use a turret or ram or even both at the same time. The plan was based on the last option, but only the attempted invasion through the towers has been used so far. Ragnarson gave Einar the ability to improvise as he went along, even with what happened on the first day of battle, in which he was nearly killed and an entire squadron died and a few more men
Traps take effect immediately by destroying two towers. One from the east sector and one from the west. Three left. Given the small amount of jars to burn all the towers, it was not possible to burn them all. Heavy use the day before made it not enough. From now on, the battle would only be between swords, arrows and spears. The army today fights more to survive than to win.
The battle intensified and has lasted for over five hours. Blood and bodies are thrown to the ground on both sides. The battle here is balanced. But with a much smaller army number than the opponent, the giants are having proportionally high casualties.
On Ragnarson's side he maintains his annihilation pace just as he started. Strong blows with the sword to kill as many enemies as possible by mutilating them, always focused on that. One blow, one enemy incapacitated or dead. And at this rate the right sector manages to repel a lot of enemies. Ragnarson's willpower spreads to other companions.
While in the East sector, where Eriksen is responsible. One of the towers was destroyed and only enemies are coming from the one that's left over there. The quantity is large as well as in the others. Eriksen and Einar know very well that they don't have the same physical abilities and battle skills as Ragnarson, so they keep to themselves more. Keeping behind the first line of combat against the enemy. But that doesn't mean they don't fight. The high tide of enemies makes them fight, but with all possible caution, as the death of a deputy captain or general is basically a checkmate in war. Eriksen, unlike Ragnarson, believes that a victory in a swordfight must be built. So he doesn't focus on just one attack but on several, weakening the enemy until the final blow.
In Einar's sector, he stays further behind the line as said, He would be further ahead if he was in full condition, but using his bad arm to carry the sword his movements are very slow and he shows difficulty in duels, but he knows that their presence there is of fundamental importance to men's morals and tactics.
All in all, the giant army is still standing out, but the real attack comes now. The enemy launched the largest wave of enemies seen so far to all three flanks at once and an approaching ram as well. The enemy now attacks from all possible entrances. The gate this time would be knocked down. There would be no escape. Just a matter of moments, as there is no way to destroy this ram, as it will be fully protected by the tower itself. The ram enters its intended space within the tower, which has not been used before due to its weight and occupied space to move around.
The enemy is already preparing the ram and begins to take it back and the men who are handling the ram are heard to make a sort of count:
One… Two… Three… Push!
And the tip of the ram hits the great castle gate causing a certain tremor in it. Going imperceptibly to many who were on the adrenaline of their battles, but to the others they weren't fighting and Einar, who was further back and hoping for it, wasn't. He immediately steps back from his position and heads towards the second in command, his lieutenant Jönar, he has a body of a normal warrior, not as strong but not weak either, he has long blond hair and tall. A man who is a fan of Einar, more a strategist than a warrior, but that doesn't mean he's a layman in the art of the sword. He says to him:
I'll go down to take care of the gate! Hold the reins here and keep formation and plan!
Yes sir!
I'm trusting you, Jönar!
I will not disappoint you, sir!
That said, Einar nods to his right arm of his army and heads towards the soldiers responsible for containing the enemies who tried to invade through the gate. Once there, he observes each of his men and goes after them all. The last weapon of the giants against the enemy army, all traps have already been used and even most of the explosives. All that remains is the machine that would be used specifically to stop the enemy army from breaking through the gate.
Einar and the other men begin to push a heavy device unknown to many soldiers who have been there so far. Such a machine was built by Einar himself and would be tested for the first time in a war. The machine had a smell of leaking gas and it was similar to a crossbow, but instead of an arrow, a cylinder barrel. There was a place to sit and even pedals. Clearly, only Einar could handle it.
Meanwhile, the north, east and west sectors were still the same. Balanced battle so far within its difficulties. Except the northern sector which was about to receive an attack from two fronts. Ragnarson notices such a move but still can't do anything about it and shouldn't. The plan has to be strictly followed and to avoid as many deaths as possible.
In this elapsed time, the ram is getting closer and closer to breaking down the gates. It already looked crooked and the large wooden stub that was stuck in it had already started to crack, it was only a matter of moments before the gates fell. Einar positioned the device facing the gate and his soldiers were all behind him. They wait all anxious and nervous for the fall of the Gates. Some even do. Einar's heart is at such a high frequency that he makes him look up and say:
Gods… I don't know if this is the moment of my death, but if not that it's an epic moment for the realm of the giants.
He settles into the device he's invented and starts fixing his eyes on the about-to-be-broken gate. Einar puts his finger on the trigger at once, waiting for the right moment to squeeze. With the almost falling of the gates the tower that is in the north sector starts to move to the side to give more space for entrance of surtrs. At this moment the archers and spearmen tried to kill as many of those below as possible, but in vain, because the gate was already destroyed.
The ground shakes again and a crash comes. It's nothing but the castle gates falling to the earth. The surtrs on a long wait for the gates to fall screamed with joy and began the invasion. But they are surprised that there is no giant there to repel them or any counterattack. The Surtr who releases the attack only sees a man sitting on some device from a distance. Such an event surprises him when he takes the next step a great flame starts to come from that device operated by Einar.
Einar had invented nothing more than a flamethrower. Unfortunately there was only one prototype to use and it's too heavy to be carried up or down in a war. Only one was taken but its effectiveness proved to be complete at the same time. Screams of pain and suffering are heard due to the high combustion. The box on the side Einar releases the gas to the cylinder pipe that at its end is something like a candle. The meeting of both results in the flame. einar can control the intensity through a trigger and it is possible to rotate the device up to 180 degrees.
As an immediate action against fire, the surts try to use shields to approach the giants, who work, but it only took a few steps to die completely charred. The device forces enemies to retreat from the gate invasion immediately. They recompose themselves back, out of reach of the flames that reached where the doors were.
A group armed with spears appears, takes the lead and begins to hurl them towards Einar. The squad promptly forms a shield wall in front of the device to protect it. The spears catch the shield but one almost hits Einar, passing a few inches close. The vice captain can't use the machine anymore at the moment, as he would hit his companions and the surtrs knowing this advance their men with shields and continue throwing their spears.
The giants are forced to advance their lines too and the clash begins. Knowing I couldn't use the calling device again. Einar leaves it and goes towards the battle. Until a spear hits the machine's gas box, basically disabling the device temporarily. The battle from now on would be just sword against sword.
Ragnarson from above in his eastern sector notices that the smell of gas or flame from Einar's machine has stopped. It was even possible to hear the noise from above also from the enemies burning with pain with their screams. I noticed that this did not happen for a few minutes. Ragnarson slows his pace and steps back to speak to one of his stewards:
Einar is having trouble down there. Take men from my sector and send them to reform.
But… sir…
Follow my orders... We'll hold on here... They can't lose at all!
Yes sir!
The steward obeys Ragnarson's orders immediately. It sends out a signal through a device that emitted colored smoke. In this case it was white. This signal would be used in case another sector was in trouble and reinforcements were needed. This was done because this time there was no reserve army to reinforce either flank if necessary. So a signal for quick regrouping was needed. The men who would be chosen to reinforce other flanks had already been previously orchestrated. They see the signal and start to move. The steward points out the direction they should go and shouts too.
Now the battle on Ragnarson's eastern flank will become even more difficult and deadly. With a smaller number, the sadist must raise his forces even more to drive enemies from his side. The cumulative weariness of two days in a row of war begins to hit Ragnarson who feels his legs wobble already. He scowls at this and decides to get on with the killing. Ignoring the pain.
Reinforcements arrive to protect the invasion through the gate and have immediate effect. The effectiveness of a shield wall is correlated with the number of men there in the formation. In the military academy of the kingdom of the giants this was one of the main war tactics taught. Repetition was required at all times. The shield wall is a great way to attack and defend if your moves are synchronized.
The soldiers who came from the east enter the formation and soon push the enemy back. And at this moment comes the glow of this tactic. Once enemies are pushed back. This is the perfect time for a deadly attack with swords or spears. And so the giants do.
The flank at the north gate manages to recover from the onslaught and disadvantage that was coming to full balance. Einar starts to think in the meantime. He looks at the enemy soldiers, the position of the tower and the gates fallen to the ground. The plan was to repel the enemies on this first day and seal the gate again for the third day, if all went well. But a plan comes to Einar's head that might give this battle a slight advantage and perhaps even war if it were executed well.
Einar exits the shield wall formation and retreats toward his flame-throwing device. He arrives at the machine to check its status and sees that an enemy spear cut the gas box, piercing it and gradually releasing the gas that was there. This made it impossible to handle the machine. The little gas left in the box by Einar's calculations would be enough for his plan.
The vice captain starts looking around looking for something that could close that cut and finds nothing. Despair comes to Einar. That he keeps looking everywhere looking for something that could plug that cut in the gas box. Distressed, he puts both hands on the cuts as an attempt but even so the gas continues to escape. As he puts his hands on the box he notices that he is wearing a long-sleeved blouse under his military cloak. He thinks fast and starts taking off his military apparatus, leaving him totally unprotected and putting the fabric of his robes into the cut in the box which clearly works almost in its entirety. At least enough to execute your plan.
Einar grabs a soldier close to him and says:
Help me take this forward as far as possible!
Yes!
The soldier did not know what his superior's intentions were, but he followed orders without flinching. Both carry the device forward to the point of approaching the shield wall formation. At this moment Einar shouts:
Shield wall! Full defense!
This formation states that no attack will be given by any giant, the focus would only be on defense. This type of tactic is normally used when one wants to attract an enemy or arrows and spears are used against. But in this situation it would be used in a totally different way. With the shield wall formed in front of him and no sword in sight. The men look like a tortoise shell. Once this is done Einar grants a new order:
Push the enemy out of the castle! Let's get everyone out of here!
YAAAAAAAH
The scream demonstrates that the soldiers use all their energy to push the enemy back. They don't know what their vice captain's intentions are, but that is given his reputation for intelligence. Some upheaval was to come. While the squads tried to push the surtrs out. Einar pushed the device as the men ahead advanced.
But the surts realize the giants' attempt and start not to focus so much on the attack, but to stop the attempts to expel them. Einar keeps dragging the device until he realizes he can't anymore because he touches one of the soldiers in front of him. The enemy managed to stop the giants. A battle of forces now takes place. And at the moment it's tied.
On Eriksen's side the battle is still at a disadvantage. Many of his men have died and the surts have a slight advantage. The situation on the western flank is so dire that the giants have been pushed back. Eriksen has been fighting for hours too and his fatigue is noticeable. He ends up killing a man and when he takes a moment to breathe. He makes the blunder of looking down. And at this moment an enemy comes towards him and grabs him and takes him back.
As the enemy pushes, Eriksen's weapon drops to the ground and the enemy drags him to the castle's parapet. The surtr puts his forearm around the vice captain's neck who starts to choke him but tries to take it off immediately. The enemy man takes a dagger from his hand and tries to stab Eriksen who also stops the attack. Now they are both on the railing and both with both hands occupied avoiding. One prevents the other from prevailing.
The enemy's knife begins to pierce Eriksen's armor. He starts asking the gods if this would be the end of him. And he clearly doesn't get an answer. He begins to remember his passion for wine and women which leads him to also remember the first battle inside the castle. More precisely the moment in Ragnarson's speech that he cultivated great wines this season. And that he would surely charge his general to take them.
The surtr in front of Eriksen manages to pierce Eriksen's armor that already feels the knife point in the skin. But the vice captain manages to join forces and head the enemy who is dizzy for a moment and apparently with a broken nose from the bleeding. Eriksen grabs him by his armor and throws him off the castle parapet. Certain death as the parapet to the ground was a relatively high height.
Eriksen leans wearily on the railing and takes a deep, relieved breath. At the same time, he looks down and sees Einar pushing the device he had talked about so much and the shield wall formation behind but that was trying to push the enemies out of the giant domain. The vice captain is strange but realizes that his partner has some idea in mind and wonders aloud:
Einar… What are you planning? You definitely need even more help. The reinforcements weren't enough for you to expel them…
Eriksen reasons and comes to the conclusion that his partner Einar wouldn't risk that high for anything, that something he had in mind would make a difference in this battle. The gate is now the key point of this war. She will decide the loser of the day or of the war if it is the giants. Eriksen calls the squadron closest to him of at least fifty men to accompany him. The vice captain decided to bet on Einar. One fewer squadron and being exposed to the fiercest battle so far would be a big risk worth taking. Eriksen analyzes everything and he says to himself aloud smiling:
Einar… I will believe you. If that leads to my death... I'll look for you to get revenge even if it's in the afterlife. - Eriksen's designated squad approaches him and one of them says:
At your orders, sir!
Let 's go men! It's glory or death!
That said, the men give the traditional battle cry and head towards the battle taking place at the gate. Now the battle has the help of men from all flanks. North, East and West. Neither Eriksen and Ragnarson know of Einar's plan but are confident in it. In the first day's battle his improvisation was paramount, but what he's about to do is not improvise. It's the purest strategy.
The shield wall is currently locked. Neither side relents. But with the coming of the squadron from the west, the situation changed. Half the men join the shield wall and the other use arrows to kill the enemies there. Even not knowing what Einar wants. Eriksen realized that his aim was to push the enemies out and that this aim was stuck.
The arrows start hitting several surtrs that are either killed or injured, and that consequently cascade. The enemy starts to fall and their formation collapses. The giants now regain the advantage and manage to push the enemy back further and further. To the point that the giants were about to leave the castle.
Einar's plan works so far, their flame device is almost where he wants it. A slight smile is observed on his face. He looks at the man beside him and asks:
What's your soldier name?
Hakon… Sir…
Right, Hakon! Don't give up now. Our goals are almost being reached!
That said, they both continue to push the machine as far forward as Einar wants. The Surts are already out of the castle but the advantage starts to fall to them because the entrance to the castle narrows them down. Now they have the geographic advantage of a widely spaced field and fewer giants. Now there is no longer the possibility of using the shield wall only for defense. The exchange of swords was necessary. The blood that was previously unseen begins to spurt everywhere. From both sides. This time there are only a few meters to go. Einar shouts to his men ahead:
GIVE YOUR ALL NOW! WE'RE ALMOST GETTING IT!
The men hear Einar's plea but the fight is too bloody for tactics and advancement. It was only possible to kill and repel the enemy. The deputy captain looks at this situation and sees no option but to rejoin the front lines while he wants Hakon to push alone.
Einar steps to the front line and sees Eriksen ahead of him. He hadn't even noticed that the new reinforcements had come from him. There's only time for them to nod their heads, but deep down Einar thinks he's the second person he owes his life to. Obviously the first is Ragnarson.
With both vice captains attacking, the giants gain enormous morale. Seeing the two risking their lives in an unknown strategy and the uncertainty that it will work, makes the men there at the gate give their all, beyond their physical capabilities.
Finally, the surtrs are pushed far enough so that Einar can take his next step. The same person backs up and sees Hakon very tired right behind him. The flame machine was positioned at the exact spot he wanted and there was still gas left for his act.
Einar, with no more time to waste, climbs on his device and turns, pointing to the tower that was there in the northern sector.
The vice captain aims the long cylinder at the large structure with one of his eyes closed and pulls the trigger. Immediately a long flame goes out towards the tower which is supported by four rods. Einar's intention is to burn just the two of them in front of him and nothing else. The structure is very solid, so it's not easy to take it down obviously.
While Einar tried to knock down the tower's support rods. The surtrs leader notices your movement and tries to break. He orders his squad to focus on the giants' flame machine. They split in two. One to attack and one to defend Einar. Many casualties on both sides, with the northern sector suffering the most for two consecutive days and still with the help of reinforcements.
The battle at the moment is all focused on the outside. All surtrs advantage with their larger number and relatively spaced giants in this battle. The formation gradually collapses and holding the enemy's momentum is just a matter of time. The flame machine does not have the same power as oil, in addition to the tower being reinforced at the bottom and with that it takes time. Knowing this, he asks the men to protect him, go into battle and hold him for another minute. Enough to melt at his sight.
The men join in a fierce battle and everyone in front of them gives it their all. Flying arms, decapitations, mutilations and a lot of blood. The minute requested by Einar seems to multiply ten or even a hundred times for those down there. But the minute comes and the two tower poles are melted enough and immediately Einar comes out of his device and shouts to his men:
EVERYONE BACK TO THE CASTLE. THE BATTLE WILL BE IN HERE!
The giant flank that was outside the castle hears the orders and immediately everyone starts to retreat. The surtrs in reaction also enter the castle without even thinking. A good amount can enter. But it was already too late. A big bang comes and the ground shakes. Einar's plan had worked and was worth the risk. The enemy sees one of his turrets fall and completely close off the castle entrance and now surtrs can no longer enter the castle from the north in any way.
A great despair hangs over the surts inside the castle. They know that you can't run away, retreat and that everyone there would die. As they thought this, the giants were already rehearsing their full attack on the already cornered enemy. Eriksen's squad that had stayed in the castle fires arrows at enemies. And now, what happens in this northern battle is a unilateral thrust of the giants on cornered enemies.
The table turn reflects not only on the underside of the castle, but on the top as well. Without the presence of the tower by the invasion from above. The enemies stopped coming and now the giants only had to deal with what had already invaded the sector of the castle, and the surtrs seeing their tower fall also shakes the same ones who found themselves surrounded.
The northern sector gets the biggest advantage ever seen in these two days of war. The more exposed flank of the giants completely nullified the enemy impetus, even with the use of the turret and ram, Einar used the surtrs' weapons against themselves. Invasion from the northern sector became impossible for the time being.
Ragnarson observes this whole situation from afar and gives him a big smile that gives him even more encouragement to continue killing the enemies around him. At that moment, the general realized that Einar was on the same level as his king Lumnus. And that he should recognize him as a genius. The advantage the vice captain gave is reflected in all sectors and in today's battle. If the odds were low for today's battle, Einar proved that victory was possible on the most impossible day.
The northern sector at the gate consumed all its advantage, eliminating all the surtrs that had entered without thinking and were consequently funneled. Einar looks at Eriksen quickly and their gazes meet. Both don't waste any reaction but extreme fatigue. Both vice captains are taking a deep breath after a fierce battle. Einar tries to get some air and yells to his men:
ONE SQUADRON WILL STAY AND BACK THE GATES IN PLACE AND STRENGTHEN THEM. THE REST WILL DIVIDE AND STRENGTHEN THE FLAGS!
The soldiers listen to Einar's orders and immediately begin to move. Even with every advantage gained. It came in exchange for a great many casualties. Einar speculates that he has lost at least half the men in his sector, not counting those he went to reinforce. But there is no time for lamentation and now the focus would be to repel surtrs from the remaining east and west sector. The sun had already started to set. An attack at night doesn't favor either side. Consequently, it would be the surtrs last onslaught before daylight ended.
The northern sector at the top also manages to finish off enemies unilaterally. With this flank free of enemy attacks, it would only be necessary to guard it in the event of an improbable deal. The remaining surtrs charged into the towers that were still standing. Einar's army split to help each of the flanks already arrive in their respective sectors.
Without the need to protect and fight alongside Einar. Northern flank help on both sides has an immediate effect. The enemy that once managed to invade is now knocked down and pushed back into the tower, and that was exactly the strategy from the start. The towers limit the access of the surtrs as it is a relatively narrow passage. The enemy knew they would have to push the giants back so they could gain space and consequently more allies could enter.
The surtrs that was surrounded both above and below the northern sector knew it would be their last day of life. Being surrounded and with no place to flee was an inevitable death, and so many of them launched an offensive, with no tactics, formation or plan, only the purest exchange of swords and as a result they all died.
Slowly the giants are taking over both sectors and pushing the enemy into their towers. Few hours for the night to come, but the intense battle continues, which despite the control by the giants, this does not prevent them from preventing the death of many of the soldiers. Neither side gives in. The surtrs want to end this battle as quickly as possible, while the giants want to prolong and survive.
Much to the surprise of both sides, with nightfall coming on and the surprised failure of the invasion causing more casualties than expected. You can hear the sounds of a trumpet blowing loudly at various points. The surtrs that hear begin to retreat immediately, that is, it was a clear signal to retreat all troops in combat. And so if the enemy withdraws from combat and takes back the two remaining towers.
Ragnarson and the three captains know that the moment an enemy retreats is the right moment for a charge. Catching the enemy running backwards, spaced and nervous was the perfect opportunity in another situation, but not in this situation at a disadvantage most of the time and strategy mounted only for the castle.
The enemy's flight brings enormous joy to the giant army that famously won the second day of battle. They know they've managed to turn an impossible situation around, but that joy doesn't last long because the surtrs won't give up anytime soon and the third day is to come.
The vice captains, knowing the success of the day's battle, run towards the eastern sector to find Ragnarson and only see a man on a pile of several bodies around him, taking a deep breath, drenched in barely recognizable blood and with his armor all torn apart. . Eriksen tries to approach such a man first and touches him on one of his shoulders. Instinctively this man tries to slash him with his sword but Eriksen quickly dodges.
The vice captain is startled and looks at the sword of the man who had just tried to strike. He sees that he is holding LionBite, that man could be none other than his General Ragnarson. He's got his eyes rolled up like he's possessed. The sadist fought for so many hours that at the end of the battle, as soon as the trumpet blew, he fainted standing up and stayed there. Einar now approaches and tries to speak:
My lord... It's me... Einar! Today's battle is over and we won! - Ragnarson hears this familiar voice and begins to return to normality, saying:
Einar!
The general gets on his knees and his eyes return to normal. He hugs Einar who was nearby and even cries a little. It was clear the sadist's joy of surviving another day.
Night comes and while the soldiers recover and feed. The three pillars of leadership come together to debate casualties and strategies. The three appear to look serious, until Eriksen decides to speak:
We survived the second day… The impossible happened but surviving the third day is out of the question… There's no way to hold the surtrs for another day…- Ragnarson looks seriously at Eriksen and with a certain angry tone says:
We have to believe in King Lumnus no matter what. We have to hold the reins around here. No matter what it is…
We have to believe that the king may have been wrong in his strategy.... We are trapped and the reinforcements that were to arrive during the first day have not arrived
There's nothing we can do… Let's fight again tomorrow. That's the only certainty… What about casualties?
It is estimated that we lost at least half of our men from the original total…
Ragnarson, upon hearing this news, demonstrates enormous concern and fear consumes him. The war is already being very difficult, and the enemy has basically twice as many soldiers, it is not known now how many they have at their disposal. But the sheer number of casualties in two days of war makes it really impossible. Even Ragnarson knows there is a limit to miracles. He begins to run a hand over his head when Moses appears from the dark side of his room. Scaring the two vice-captains but not Ragnarson, he already knows his spy, so he's no longer surprised. He asks his spy:
What is the report?
The enemy felt the defeat of today very much. So they decided to retreat to be stronger tomorrow… Only their reinforcements arrived and tomorrow they will use the catapult to destroy the tower and enter the castle… And finally, I believe a maritime reinforcement will also arrive tomorrow.
A terrible mood is established in the room where the four were, nothing is said for a few moments until Ragnarson breaks the silence:
All right, Moses... Thank you for your services. I believe today will be the last!
My lord…
Moses nods to each of the presents and Ragnarson tosses Moses a bag of coins. Despite being the general's spy for many years. The same works independently. Not committing to any specific realm. He leaves the room leaving only the vice captains and the general. Who now more than ever are even more concerned. Einar, this time breaks the newly restored silence and says:
What are we going to do now ? We cannot rely so much bad news on our soldiers. I don't have any hope for tomorrow. Would a surrender be correct? - Ragnarson looks at Einar and replies:
No… never give up… give up so little… Let's keep believing in the king.
The king is not here, Ragnarson.
A beginning of a battle erupts from the room, but Eriksen restrains the two from a possible fight. Einar gives up trying to argue and leaves the room shortly thereafter. The remaining vice captain still believes in the king still but is making it more and more difficult. No message transmission or reinforcement makes him believe that Lumnus gave them up there and used them as bait. The king's genius can also be used to commit "necessary goods" or "ends justify means", why not? It's a valid theory that can pass anyone in this situation. Eriksen also leaves the room, in fact the two vice-captains know that Ragnarson is adamant in his decision and will fight the next day.

Return of the Woodcutter
Aito Walker was a self-proclaimed martial artist, a criminal, a broken man, and a fishing slave who later became a woodcutter before dying due to his heavy consumption of alcohol. With thousands of other humans, he is forcefully revived into a boundless grey space by the gods of a foreign world, Iris, to take part in a never-ending war waged against Fearmongers. A race capable of corrupting living beings and inducing fear, even the bravest of warriors cannot resist—when the Fearmongers do not kill them, that is.To bait humans into this conflict, the gods offer the mortals powers in exchange of eternal servitude and the completion of trials before finally entering Iris.Even though Aito doesn’t agree with it, he sees in Iris a chance to atone for his past misdeeds, in this fantasy world of swords and magic filled with many races, where everything seems possible. He will pave his own path despite the gods he despises trying to manipulate him into doing their bidding.Aito will start with almost nothing but his wit, a peculiar system, and increased strength—much like other revived humans.Bearing a sin—he could not, cannot, and will not forget—haunting him to this day, Aito will strive to regain what little honor he has left.He will suffer and, at times, fail. Taking advantage of his weaknesses, the Fearmongers, demigods, gods, and many others will hinder his path. But a powerful yearning will keep him from falling apart. An ever-burning flame melting away the despair and welding back the broken pieces of courage.A single desire.«I will find redemption no matter the cost.»………Or not, hun, who knows? The book isn’t done yet. Haha—SLAP!«Who put this guy in the synopsis narration?! Get him out of here and launch the warnings! Now!»***WARNINGS:— The MC is human. If you’re looking for a perfect MC, you’ll only be wasting your time here. However, if you’re looking for an MC who will LEARN, GROW because of his flaws. An MC who will try his hardest to overcome adversity, then you’re in the right place.— No harems. However, it doesn’t mean the characters can’t fool around without having love interests. A relationship isn’t necessary for people to satisfy their physical desires.— You will find a few typos, grammatical and wording issues, that’s certain. I’ll do my best to bring you guys quality content and such issues will either be nonexistent or extremely few. However, one man can only do so much. If I get enough support, I’ll hire an EDITOR that will look at the chaps with a fresh eye. And POOF! Issues no more. Improved quality. Happier author and reader. Not sure if the editor will be happy tho.— The first three chapters are fast-paced as to quickly get into the nitty-gritty but slow down afterward to give the story the time it needs to progress accordingly.— The book can, never mind, it will contain «strong» language, gore and violence.— Comedy, as you know it (and if you don’t, now you know) is subjective. So you might not like the jokes.— If you truly read that until the end you have my virtual congratulations ‘cause I sure as hell wouldn’t have done that.

8 167Musings of a Hypocrite
Mortals are weird. They insisted in unity, as well as individualism. More often than not, they're shocked at truth and honesty, but not at falsehood and deceit. They asked questions with multiple answers, and provided answers that begged other questions. They made things to break, they destroyed things to study, they researched things to recreate. Humans, Elves, Beastmen. All of them. Within these contradictions, a miracle might manifest. But this tended to work with a trial and error methodology. Most mortals never got the happy ending. This diary is my journey alongside a few students of mine. In simple terms - they learn, they grow, they fight. They'll journey through centuries of conflict, from the physical to the educational. They'll experience the cruelty and benelovence of all living-kind. They'll experience the consequences of their choices and the blessings of their rewards. They will grow to become useful to me, or die trying like all the others. As for you? The god reading our lives like a book, sitting in your chair without a care in the world? I will show you, the farce that is known as 'God'.
