《Adventures of a Reluctant Pacifistic Monster》Ch. 5 Out of the Darkness and into the Wild; The First Great Exploration of Mr. Pine (Part 2)

‘THANK THE HEAVENS! I’m happy to be alive!’ where his only thoughts as he watched the crazy woodpecker fly away. He let his body relax and plopped down onto the branch. All that running around left him exhausted. Plus, he could still feel burning pain on his back, he needed some rest.
To bad, life’s never easy. As the bird got further away, he felt his connection to it’s mind growing weaker. He didn’t have time to stop and think, he just started to chase after it.
‘Damn it, seems like I can’t let it get to far from me otherwise the skill loses effect. I don’t want to find out what he would do to me when he recovers.’
After following it for a while he noticed that they were approaching, what appeared to be, a nook in the tree. It seemed to be the woodpeckers’ home. The discovery renewed his worries, as he knew that the skill would only last until the woodpecker made it home.
Before he could think of a new solution to his problem, lady luck smiled upon him. Just as the woodpecker was approaching his nest, the blood loss finally become too much for it and it lost consciousness. He watched as it fell from the sky all, hitting several branches on its way down and impaling his quills deeper into its body.
‘It’s finally over’ he thought, as the bird hit the ground, never rising again.

‘That’s really all I get?! I almost died to get a reward that can be mostly replicated by an ACORN!’ He cursed the system.
‘I'm so tired, maybe I should rest in the woodpeckers house? I don’t think he’ll mind. And if I’m lucky, I might even find some acorns. I mean it was called the acorn woodpecker.
He dragged his tired and beaten body towards the little nook in the tree. When he arrived, he peaked in just to make sure no one else was home and boy was he shocked. The nook had acorns covering every inch of the place. There must have been hundreds, if not thousands, of them.

‘Jackpot! There’s so many of them! I bet I can find lots of the tasty variety and get lots of points.
He climbed into the nook and looked around. There was a little nest at the center of the nook, made from small twigs, grass and leaves. The nest looked appealing to his tired eyes, so he walked towards it and got in. He then proceeded to lay down in the nest, feeling how warm and soft it was.
‘This is the best. I’m just going to shut my eyes for a bit…’ and he was out.
Time passed, as the light from the day slowly faded. Replaced by the soft purple glow of night. As moonlight started to peak into the tree nook, an adorable little critter started to stir. He awoke slightly confused, but quickly regained clarity.
‘Wow, I must have slept all day’ he thought as he got up and stretched his body. He felt a throbbing pain on his back and hissed. ‘Damn it. It still really hurts, but at least not as bad as before. What was wrong with that bird? I don’t think the acorns had anything to do with it madly attacking me. But if not that then what? Why go as far as burning your soul for nothing?’ While thinking about that he heard a ‘ding’.

He was speechless… for like a few seconds.
‘God damn it! Of fucken course, it was that lunatics fault! I should have known! It’s only my first day here and he almost gets me killed!’ He spent some time cursing the being that gave him that skill, until he sighed and remembered he had other things to do.
‘Forget it, I have more important things to, like checking my spoils.’ His mood improved just thinking about all the tasty acorns in this place.
‘There must be dozens of tasty acorns in this pile of normal ones. I can earn lots of points! Wait but what are the points even for? I really should check out the store now. No, use putting it off any longer, open store’ he thought.

But nothing happened.
‘What…’ he was confused, until he thought of something. ‘Don’t tell me… does that bastard want me to… FINE! Pristine store open!'

He then got up and ran around the nook trying to contain his excitement but failed. So, he headed to the exit and stuck his head out to get some fresh air. With his head out, he was shocked to see the magical scene in front of him. The moonlight cast a beautiful purple glow across the picturesque landscape that enhanced its beauty.
‘This is amazing… This life’s going to be fun. I’m going to go on lots of adventures exploring and seeing everything this world has to offer! I’m going to go and find the tastiest fruits in the world and find the best place to build my perfect home! Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.
