《Midnight Rose ( The Rose Series: Book 1)》Chapter 7: KJ

I could hear sounds of beeping around me. I tightly squeezed my eyes, trying to adjust to the sounds. I opened my eyes to see a white ceiling. Looking around, I saw there was a machine hooked up to me. The door to the room opened and a lady wearing black scrubs walked in.
“Good to see that you are finally awake.” She walked towards me. I tried to sit up in bed but I felt weak. “You might want to rest easy,” the lady put her hand on my chest, “you were severely dehydrated last night when you were brought in.” The memories from the night before came back to me. The door was slammed open revealing Lilly.
“Is she okay?” Lilly walked over to the bed grabbing different parts of my body examining me.
“She should be fine but I’m sure the doctor will want her to stay for a few more hours.” The nurse said before walking out. Lilly then glared at me.
“You are so lucky Ryker and Niklaus were there to catch you before you fell down the stairs.” She pointed her finger at me. “Have you been eating or drinking at all this past week?” I shook my head no, praying that the nurse or doctor would walk in and save me from Lilly’s anger. “Are you fucking insane? What were you doing with the food that we would bring to your door?” I was scared to tell her for fear of her possibly ending my life. “KJ answer my question now,” her voice became stren.
“I might have just thrown the food in the trash,” my voice was soft and quiet.
“I’m sorry, what was that?” Lilly put her arms on the hospital bed and leaned down towards me. I felt small as I lowered myself in the bed.
“I threw the food away in the trash.” I couldn’t look her in the eyes. She sighed as she took a deep breath. She removed her hands from the bed and stood up straight, grabbing her phone out of her pocket. She headed out the door while bringing her phone to her ear. I was surprised she didn’t yell at me. I was expecting her to scold me some more and not walk out.

Shortly after Lilly left, the doctor came into the room. I sat up in the bed eager for him to let me leave. He grabbed a clipboard that was beside the bed and started to flip through the pages that were on it. He nodded his head while humming. Anxiety grew in me from him not saying anything. Lilly then came back into the room and she didn’t look all too pleased. She leaned on the wall that was across from the bed, crossing her arms and staring at me. I swallowed my saliva as I felt a lump form in my throat.
“Is she good to be released?” Lilly spoke up. Finally someone spoke up. The doctor turned his face and looked at Lilly while nodding. I released a breath I didn’t know I was holding in. “Good,” Lilly responded while glaring at me. I averted her gaze.
Why don’t we tell the doctor we want to stay? Lilith sounded a little scared. I have never once heard her be scared of anything but then again Lilly does scare me too. I really wish we could Lilith.
“I’ll have the nurse come in and give you the discharge paperwork,” the doctor turned towards the door. He got to the door, grabbing the handle all the while turning his head back to Lilly. “Make sure she actually eats and drinks something. If I remember correctly she is in your care.” Lilly let out a growl-like sound at the doctor as he walked out of the room. Lilly put your hand on her forehead and sighed.
“KJ I want to ask you a question,” Lilly walked towards the foot of the bed and put her hands on the foot board. I nodded while looking down. “The question is mostly regarding your past.” I jolted my head up, staring at her with worry in my eyes and my breathing sped up a bit. Why does she want to know that now? I could sense Lilith’s anxiety which did not help mine. “You will still be able to stay in the pack house no matter the answer.” She could just be saying that to make us feel better. I blocked out Lilith even though I know she is going to hate me for it later.
“What is the question?” I asked as soon as I got my breathing steady.

“What is the first thing you can remember?” Lilly walked to the side of the bed and sat down by my legs. I never really like talking about my past because it always reminded me that I was alone. I took a deep breath before answering.
“The first ever memory I have that I remember was from 9 years ago. I woke up on the ground in the middle of the woods. I didn’t know exactly how I got there or where exactly I was. I ended up wandering around for a long time looking for anyone that could tell me where I was. During that time I figured out I couldn’t remember who I was or where I came from. I did notice I was wearing that necklace I told you about. Hours after wandering around I found shelter in an abandoned cave.” I looked down at my hands.
“Is that all you remember?” I nodded while trying to not look up at her. I felt bad for leaving out a certain part but I couldn’t tell anyone here about that encounter I had. “Are you….” Lilly didn’t get to finish her sentence due to the nurse walking in. Thank god I am saved. The nurse walked over to the bed, handing paperwork to Lilly.
“Alright let's get this IV out of you and you're free to go back to the pack house.” The nurse put on some gloves and grabbed a cotton ball and some medical warp. She began to pull the IV out which caused me to wince a little. Once she got the IV out she put the cotton ball on the bleeding spot and wrapped it up to keep it in place. “After about an hour or two you can take off the bandage okay.” She threw away her gloves and walked out.
“Come on, Diedrick is waiting for us in his car,” Lilly got off the bed and waited for me to walk in front of her. We walked out of the medical clinic and sure enough Diedrick’s car was sitting right out front. Lilly waited for me to get into the back sit of the car before getting in the front. The ride to the pack house was filled with awkward silence. I felt the lump in my throat return and it felt like I could burst out crying any moment. I didn’t know why I felt like that.
When we arrived at the pack house, I attempted to go up the stairs but was stopped by Ryker and Niklaus blocking the staircase. I tried to push past them but neither one of them would move from their positions. I wanted to tell them to move but I felt like if I tried to I would break down right there. I turned my head to look at Lilly and Diedrick, hoping they would tell Ryker or Niklaus to move.
“You are going to eat dinner with us tonight.” Lilly spoke up and it was not what I wanted to hear her say. I looked down at the ground, shaking my head, still afraid to use my voice. I just wanted to go up to my room right now. “KJ, come on now.” I felt Lilith claw at the block I had up. I shock my head more while trying to back away from Niklaus and Ryker. The room felt like it was getting smaller by the minute and it felt like it was getting harder to breathe. Niklaus went to go grab my arm but before he could the block in my head broke down and Lilith came full front.
“Back away right now” Lilith growled out and slapped Niklaus’ hand away. I could feel my fangs form. Lilly took one step forward before Lilith snapped. “Subsisto rectum est,” I tried to figure out what language Lilith spoke in, “Don’t you dare come any closer to us.” Lilly stepped back. “KJ is having a full blown panic attack right now and all of you are making it worse. So I suggest it would be best to leave her alone and allow her up to her room now.” Lilly bobbed her head towards Niklaus and Ryker. Both of them stepped aside and Lilith let me front again. I instantly ran upstairs to my room. I shut the door and tried to lock it only to realize there were no more locks on the door. I fell to my knees and let the tears I was holding flow out.

The Yes-Mage
Plenty of people have stopped and asked what it'd be like to simply have everything, and Sylvain Henry Camille Johansson was no different. He was a man who had a lot of things going on, with a name that'd make a supervillain blush and a family who'd make even the useless of their rank into someone important. It was a shame, then, that he was slapped with a dreadfully unfortunate condition that kept him from living up to any of those already low expectations. Stuck living a life where magic is everywhere while he's left working with nothing more than a moderate intellect, a little bit of whatever influence he could get from his family, and a lifetime's practice at making himself the ideal subordinate for his bosses' boss, Vane was still beating the odds and slowly working his way up in the world. When the cunning yes-man finally got a chance to really make a name for himself, he leapt at the offer, taking his first real step onto a road he knew he was always meant to walk. His goal? Nothing less than finding out why he and too many other unfortunate souls are barred from the wonderful world of the higher energies, and with any luck, fixing it. Of course, life has a knack for interfering in even the humblest of plans, and Vane's lofty ideals were anything but humble; he was practically a walking bullseye for disaster. The funny thing about catastrophe, though, is that nobody can ever say what form it's going to take. That’s why, when it all went wrong for Vane, he'd gotten everything he'd ever wanted foisted onto him, and Everything else, too. Watch as a man so used to saying 'yes' to everyone above him finds himself stuck with the power to make reality itself say it back.
8 73Fragments of Glass
before the 1939-1945 War, most churches in England had stained glass windows, but despite local people's best efforts many of these windows were smashed in the bombing. What could be repaired was repaired, but in many churches all they could do was reassemble the remaining fragments randomly, with extra bits of clear glass added to eke them out to fill the windows. That is what I imagined for my collection of short stories: fragments of stained glass, bits of robe, bits of faces, all sorts of odds and ends randomly stuck together. And with quite a lot of clear fragments among the coloured ones. Just broken pieces of stories that anyone can look through.
