《Gokaiku: I Got Reincarnated, But It Wasn't How I Thought It Would Be!!》Chapter 50: Return

「Are you all set? Did you not forget anything?」Fritz
「Yeah, there shouldn't be anything left. Thank you for letting us stay here.」Grey
「Don't mention it. I owe you my daughter's life after all.」Fritz
Currently, we are being sent off by Fritz, Liz, Sebastian-san, and Rhodes-san for our departure back to Galderia. But among the ones sending us off, one was in a particularly gloomy mood.
「Are you really leaving?」Eliza
It was Liz, but even though she was sad, she held back her tears while sending us off. She has really matured ever since the first time we met her.
「Sorry, Liz-chan, but we really need to return. Don't worry, we'll visit you when we can, okay?」Yuna
「Un...」Eliza
Even though she was against us leaving, Liz still nodded quietly. She really became attached to us. I just hope she won't trust strangers easily. It would be a problem if she did.
「Grey-sama, the next time we meet, I'm going to surprise you with the dishes I'm going to make with the things you taught me.」Rhodes
「I'm looking forward to that, Rhodes-san.」Grey
「Sad as it may be, I'm also bidding you farewell, Yuna-sama, Grey-sama. I hope your journey goes well.」Sebastian
「Thank you.」Grey
「Un.」Yuna
After saying our final words for each, it was finally our time to depart. Although it has been fun in Moterno, Galderia was still our home.
「Well then, we'll be going now.」Grey
「See you next time~!」Yuna
Waving our goodbyes, Yuna and I started our journey back to Galderia, but just when we thought we were already out of sight, Liz came running from the mansion towards us, only stopping when we noticed her.
「Grey-oniisama, Yuna-oneesama, next time! I promise I will be stronger! You will be proud of me!」Eliza
Grasping her breath, Liz yelled loudly towards us. And with her eyes brimming with passion, we could tell she was serious about it.
Silly girl... we're already proud of you.
「Well then, we'll be waiting for that day to come!」Grey
「Good luck, Liz-cha~n!」Yuna
After saying that to us, Liz quickly returned to the mansion. And seeing her safely return, Yuna and I continued our journey.
Before leaving town, we visited Althea-san to tell her of our departure, we also did the same for Gil-san and Hal-san. And after all of that, there was one place we visited before we fully departed. It was the Labyrinth of Gale.
「Grey-sama, Yuna-sama, is there you want something from here?」
When we arrived there, the first one to greet us was one of the soldiers who were guarding the labyrinth when we exited it. It seems that the other soldiers were taking a break.
「No, we just came to visit the labyrinth before we depart for Galderia.」Grey
「Oh, I see...」
When the soldier heard our reasoning, he made a strange face. It must have been an odd reason to hear.
「Did you find it strange for us to visit it before departing?」Grey
「Ah, no. I haven't really been inside the labyrinth so I don't know what kind of memories the participants made there. But from time to time, I do see some people visiting. Although it's uncommon, I wouldn't really call it strange.」
「I see...」Grey
「Well then, since their excellencies wanted to visit it, I'll be going some distance away from here. It would be rude to intrude on your privacy, after all.」
「Ah, thank you...」Grey
After saying that, the guard left the two of us alone and walked about a hundred meters away, making sure that he won't hear us, while at the same time being able to watch the labyrinth.
He's really considerate... Though the way he addresses us is a little uncomfortable.
Without wasting more time, Yuna and I had a little walk inside the labyrinth, but unlike when it was active, the torchstones didn't light up when we were nearby. So instead of relying on them I just created a little fire for light.
「It's really dark...」Grey
「Un... It looks nothing like the labyrinth we were just in a few days ago.」Yuna
As we walked inside, we reminisced about the memories we made there, like when Yuna reached S-rank or when we became lovers. Although it's probably the least romantic place to confess to, the labyrinth holds a special meaning for the both of us.
「Grey...」Yuna
「Hm?」Grey
「Next year... Let's challenge the labyrinth again, but next time, let's make sure to conquer it!」Yuna
Yuna boldly declared as she clenched her fist.
Seeing her act like that, I could clearly see her similarities with Liz. It was as if Liz was just a mini version of her.
「Sure. Let's conquer it.」Grey
After making that promise, the two of us went out of the labyrinth and said our goodbye to the soldier from before. And since we didn't have anything more to do, Yuna and I started our journey back to Galderia.
Just like the time we headed to Moterno, Yuna and I took the forest route, and just like time, we had some minor inconveniences, and encountered some monsters and beasts, nevertheless we still managed to arrive in Galderia safely.
Last time, it took us almost a day to reach Moterno, but because of our power up, the way back was a lot quicker. We arrived just a little after the sunset.
「Hm? Isn't that...」Dale
Just as we approached the gate, one familiar figure came into view, squinting his eyes to see who was approaching.
「Long time no see, Dale-san!」Grey
「Nice to meet you again~!」Yuna
「I knew it! It's Grey and Yuna! You two sure took your time in Moterno. So, how was your experience there?」Dale
「It was good, we met a lot of people there and saw a lot of new things. And the food there was delicious! The Kiria candy was especially delicious!」Yuna
Yuna happily reported, emphasizing the part where she mentioned the food. There was even a candy that I didn't know about.
「Yeah, it was all well, though... we did encounter a bit of trouble.」Grey
「Well, you can't expect every trip to become perfect. There will always be little inconveniences anywhere you go.」Dale
Yep, except that in this case, those little inconveniences were an attempt to abduct the lord's daughter and a prison break.
Hearing Dale-san's words, all I could respond with was a dry laugh.
「Anyway, why didn't you two tell me that you two became B-rankers. Should I start addressing you two with "sama" now?」Dale
「Please don't. It's really uncomfortable.」Yuna
「Yeah... Almost everybody in Moterno is already addressing us like that, please don't add to our suffering.」Grey
「Haha, it must have been tough for you. Well, it's good that you're not letting all that power get into your heads. It's rare to see youngsters like you these days.」Dale
Getting that compliment, I felt a little happy, but the way Dale-san is saying it, he sounded like an old grandpa.
Dale-san and us chatted a little more before we left for the Rabbit's Den. We wanted to visit the adventurer's guild but it was already evening, so we just decided to head to the inn.
「One more order here!」
Advertisement
「More booze!」
「I want another serving of boar stew!」
「Same here!」
When we entered the inn, it was real chaos. Orders from customers came flying everywhere and the receptionist, Helen-san, was troubled over how to serve them, even though Selia-san was already helping her out.
We wanted to greet them, but with all the chaos happening, we had no opportunity to do so. So we just waited until the chaos died down.
We waited it out, but contrary to our expectations, the chaos only died down more than an hour later. It was almost the Rabbit Den's closing time.
「Haah... It's finally over...」Helen
「What are you saying, Helen? There's still some customers there.」Selia
Selia-san pointed at us, and Helen-san's eyes followed. When she saw us, she quickly walked towards us while Selia-san headed to the kitchen.
「May I get your orderー hm?」Helen
She must have been very tired, but even when Helen-san walked towards us, it took her some time to realize that it was us.
「Uuu... Yuna-chan~! Grey~! You're baaacckkkk!! Uuuu... You're back...」Helen
When she finally realized who we were, Helen-san immediately came rushing towards us and embraced us tightly, all while crying like a little child. She was even more childish than Liz.
「Helen, what's with all the ruckusー Hm... Ohhh, bocchan, jou-chan, you're back. How was your trip?」Gerd
「It was good... But first, can you first help us get out of this predicament...?」Grey
「Ah...」Gerd
When Gerd-san saw her dear daughter clinging to us tightly with tears all over her face, he then walked towards us and slowly detached from us the sobbing mess that was Helen-san.
「Sorry about that, bocchan, jou-chan... It must have been unpleasant being welcomed like that. Hey, Helen, apologize as well.」Gerd
「Sowwy...」Helen
「Ah, we don't really mind. We're actually happy that Helen-san missed us.」Grey
「Uuu... Gweyー」Helen
「Helen, stop acting like a child.」Selia
Before we even noticed, Selia-san already appeared besides Helen-san, pinching her ears when she noticed Helen-san about to go crying once again.
Waaaa... Mothers sure are scary.
「Welcome back, Yuna-chan, Grey-kun... And sorry for this child of ours, she's acting really childish right now.」Selia
「But okaa-saー」Helen
「No buts! You should act more like your age, this is why you never had a boyfriend!」Selia
「Uuu!」Helen
Helen-san tried to regain her dignity from what her mother said, but rather than regaining it, she lost it even more. Even the topic of her never having a boyfriend got brought up.
Haha... Ha.... Poor Helen-san, both her parents are scolding her. I wonder, has she always been like this?
「By the way, how long have you two been back in Galderia?」Selia
「Ah, we just got back today. Actually, we arrived here for about an hour ago, but the inn was so busy so we just waited it out before greeting you.」Grey
「Un... And the customers were very noisy.」Yuna
「Eh?! You've been here for an hour?! I'm sorry we didn't notice you.」Selia
「Ah, it's alright. You were very busy after all. Oh, and by the way, has it always been like that? I don't remember it being crowded like this.」Grey
「Ah... That's because many adventurers just got back from the Labyrinth of Gale. As a celebration, they've been treating themselves with booze and light snacks. Days like these should still continue until three days from now.」Gerd
I see... So it's because the adventurers earned some extra money from the labyrinth. Well, we earned some extra money there too, but calling them extra, each adventurer would probably get mad at us.
We should probably never tell what we got to anyone. Luckily, Yuna has fully understood when and when not to say things. She has really grown since the first time we arrived in Galderia.
「But less about that, how about you two? Will you be checking in on our inn once again?」Gerd
「Ah, yes, we've got nowhere else to go after all.」Grey
「You heard that right, Helen? Now, why don't you get the register and list down Yuna-chan and Grey-kun's check in.」Selia
「O-Of course!」Helen
Hearing that we will be checking in, Helen-san perked up and energetically headed to the reception desk. She was nothing like the sobbing mess she was before.
A few moments later, Helen-san returned to us with the register and the calculator in her hands, ready to tabulate our check in.
「Will you be having two single rooms with breakfast like before?」Helen
「Ah, no, we'll be having a large room this time.」Grey
「A large room...」Helen
A crapー
Having said the words "large room", I expected Helen-san to have a large grin on her face, but contrary to my expectations, Helen-san's face became dejected.
Eh?
「Don't tell me... Yuna-chan and Grey are lovers now...」Helen
To Helen-san's question, Yuna and I stayed quiet for a while and just nodded silently. Seeing our reaction, Helen-san became even more distressed.
「No way... Other than being able to get a lover before me, I have also lost my sole reason to keep teasing the both of you... No! This is unacceptable!」Helen
Helen-san grieved over and over but it was all useless. No matter how much she grieved, neither of the two things she said will come undone.
「This is why I said you should stop acting like a child. Even Yuna-chan and Grey-kun got ahead of you.」Selia
「Okaa-san... please stop trying to rub salt into my wounds... I know full well that I'm way behind of my peers when it comes to love...」Helen
「If you know that much, then stop acting like a child and get yourself a boyfriend! Do you plan to never have us experience having grandchildren?!」Selia
「I know that much, but the hurdle is just too high!!」Helen
I don't really think that it's that much of a hurdle. After all, Helen-san is a beautiful lady, it must have something to do with her being childish like Selia-san said. Well, Yuna is a little childish as well, but I also love that part of her.
Ah! I should stop thinking about these things! It would be embarrassing if Yuna finds out.
Even after clearing my mind of such thoughts, Selia-san and Helen-san's comedy bit still continued. Because of that, Yuna, me, and Gerd-san paid them no attention and continued the process of us checking in.
「So you're going to have a large room and breakfast for two person for a week, right?」Gerd
「Yeah, that's right.」Grey
「Then that will be...... 1,120 kiels, but as a congratulatory gift for the two of you, a thousand is just fine.」Gerd
「Ah, thank you, Gerd-san.」Grey
Having signed the register, I paid Gerd-san a silver coin, and in turn, he gave us the keys for our room. But even after all that, Selia-san and Helen-san were still arguing about Helen-san needing to have a boyfriend.
「By the way, Gerd-san. How long will those two keep going at it?」Grey
「That I don't know, but it'll probably last for at least the next half an hour.」Gerd
That long, huh...
「How about we head to the kitchen while they continue their quarrel. I'll cook you two something delicious like I promised.」Gerd
「Ah, then I'll help you as well.」Grey
「Me too. I'll also help.」Yuna
「Then let's all cook a wonderful dish together.」
「Yeah.」Grey
「Un.」Yuna
The three of us headed to the kitchen but because they were too focused on their quarrel, they didn't notice us leaving.
I just hope Helen-san can survive it...
Helen-san, fight on!

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
