《Reborn: Last Chance to Ascend》63. Bureaucracy everywhere!

"Gah!" I massaged my temples in frustration at the pile of papers at my desk. Hundreds of pages were forming a small tower. I was holding a black and silver fountain pen in my free hand.
'Why? Who would have thought that I would have to put my signature on so many papers as the city lord? Why do they need my approval for every little thing, like some small kids.'
I grabbed a few pages of paper bounded together and read the first few lines from them.
Resource allocation for the city guards of Nor by the districts for the second quarter of year 4826 a.g.c. in accordance with the fourth paragraph of the city charter of laws for the city of Nor...
My eyes hurt after reading boring papers filled with stuff I didn't understand or care about. At first, I was reading through the whole papers, but slowly I started to skip more and more of them until it came to the stage where I read only the first few lines.
"Bang!" I punched the table with my fist, creating a dent on its smooth polished surface, 'I thought this was supposed to be a medieval world, then why is there so much of a bureaucracy. I want to learn magic and hunt for XP, not spend a whole day doing stupid paperwork.'
I had an urge to just escape from the work and go out, but one side of me didn't allow it, 'I am the lord of this city, and I have my duties.'
With a swift stroke of my pen, I put my signature on the last page of that resource allocation approval. I nimbly put it into the pile of finished paperwork, and a small smile formed on my face as I got closer to finishing up. Then I looked out of the window longingly, 'My powers already returned, and I have to do this... Why am I missing the days when enemy agents were causing havoc in the city.'
"Knock! Knock!" someone knocked at the door to my office.
"You may enter!"
The door flew wide open, and Rose walked inside, holding a small chest made out of the polished dark wood. She walked straight to my table and put down the chest with a wide smile on her face.
"I got your glasses. I hope you will like them as it was so hard to get them with such a niche and specific enchantment."
'Finally!' With excitement, I reached toward the chest and opened it up. Inside was pair of glasses with a thin golden frame and circular tinted lenses. I grabbed them, bringing them up to look at them from closer.
'Will they look weird on me? Maybe a mask would be better than glasses... No mask without a hood or helmet would look even weirder. Well, I'll put them on and then I will see. Oh, I almost forget about the [Analyze] as it is not working most of the time.'

'Well, their effects are good, but I expected absolute protection against light damage, but I guess such glasses would be much harder to find.'
I put glasses on and took a mirror out of my [Item Box].
'Ohh, no, I really look like a mobster from the eighties in them... But, I guess it isn't such a big problem as I would be wearing them only during battles.'
Rose kept looking at me expectantly the whole time, "How are they? I hope they are a good fit."
"Yes, they are comfortable. Well done." I put them down into my [Item Box], "Also can you give me an update on the individuals I wanted to be followed?"
Rose immediately started to recite information she had in her typical cheerfully tone, "I ordered a few men to follow them. In short, they were moving between the dungeon, the tavern where they are accommodated and the central street.
"They didn't meet with any suspicious individuals. However, we caught them inquiring about some information from locals, but they were standard queries you can expect from visitors."
'Well, that's good. It looks like I was paranoid for nothing, but one can't ever be too careful enough.'
"Keep following them, and you may leave now. I have still lots of work to finish."
Her mood dropped as she nodded and walked out through the doors, closing them behind her. I grabbed another paper from the stack and started to read.
Renewal of land lease agreement between the city of Nor and Karnach village...
'Uhh, this city has some villages under its management? I had no idea... which is a shame as they basically belong to me.' I thought as I scribbled my signature at the bottom of the paper.
"Knock! Knock!" My hand slipped, creating a long line of atrament on the paper.
'Again? Is the universe making a joke out of me trying to be responsible and finish my work?'
"Come in!" I shouted angrily.
The door opened slowly, and a young boy in a long blue robe walked inside. He looked at my angry face and paled up a little bit.
"Ehmm, mm-aster Aliford wishes to kk-now why you stopped visiting his lectures."
'Ohhh shit, I totally forget about it... Why am I so busy? I can't even have one free week.'
"Well, you can tell him that I was a little busy, but I will visit him tomorrow." I raised my voice again, "Now, get out and let me work!"

The boy jumped up as I raised my tone, but then he breathed out in relief and quickly walked out of my office.
'Why are people so nervous around me?... Maybe they are circulating some false rumours about me. I will investigate it later. Anyway, time to go back to work!'
??? POV:
Two long lines, one made out of various carriages and the second out of people dragged all the way from the gates to the city.
'What is going on? Why are they checking everyone who wants to enter the city.' Then I smiled as I stepped out of the lines and walked straight towards the gate, skipping the long queue, 'I guess it's time to have fun as the young and arrogant sword mistress I currently am.'
"Hah!" My angel sighed behind me, but she soon followed me.
As I passed by the people from a line, they looked at me as if they wanted to say something, but as soon as they spotted my expensively looking outfit, they just looked away. But, halfway to the gate bearded man wearing an old gambeson grabbed me by my arm. A strong odour of alcohol was reeking from him, and his eyes were bloodshot.
"Hey, girl! Why are you in such a rush? It looks like you need some spanking as you can't behave!" His mouth opened in a wide smile, showing off his rotten yellow teeth.
I smiled back at him and kicked him in between his legs. Drunkard's face twisted in pain as he cried in agony, "Ahhh!". In pain, he let off my arm and fell to the ground, where he curled up with his hand over his crouch. Surrounding people snickered at his suffering. I ignored them and continued on my way toward the city. Suddenly I heard a sound of a blade unsheathing. I nimbly turned in the direction of the sound. Drunkard stood up and unsheathed a long, rusted dagger hanging on his hip from a sheath.
"You little bitch, I will gut you like a small pig!" he sprinted towards me, his face still twisted in pain.
I snickered at him, provoking him even more. He quickly closed a distance between us and swung at my neck with his rusted dagger. I moved my arm, catching the wrist of his arm and holding the dagger. Then I twisted it, "Crack!" his bone cracked, causing him to drop his weapon.
"Gahh!" he screamed in pain again before fainting.
In the meantime, guards that saw the scene had already approached my location. They just looked at my outfit before a guard with a red feather on his kettle helmet shouted at the other guards, "Take that drunkard into the jail and teach him a lesson!". Then he looked at me and bowed slightly, "Miss, we apologize in the name of Aldenberg city for the trouble."
"Pchh, you are lucky that I am in a good mood!"
'Tchh, I start to like this persona.'
The cold and crystal clear voice of my angel spoke inside of my head, creating some kind of an invisible channel between our souls, "Be careful. You are again getting controlled by the persona you created."
Her word hit me like a bucket full of ice-cold water. It wasn't just feeling as I could tell that they were filled with some unknown power, 'Ohh shit, she is right. This is not how I would normally act... I need to be more careful.'
Just in case, I opened the description the skill to read through it once again.
