《Reborn: Last Chance to Ascend》44. Hideout 2/2

I entered their hideout. Everything looked plain. It was just a regular house with simple furniture. The old wooden floor was creaking under my feet as I walked through the room. I couldn't see or hear anyone. Luckily I saw an aura of an unknown person, so I knew where to go. Passing through another room that looked like a kitchen, I kept going in the direction of aura until I arrived in front of the wall. There was a spot on the wall that glowed with an aura. I touched it, and the wall dispersed into dust, creating an entrance. Immediately a gust of wind came from inside, sending me flying backwards. I hit a wall creating cracks in it as my barrier absorbed damage.
A tall man with a hood hiding his face came out of the hidden room. In his hand was a greatsword with wind currents surging around it in spirals. In his other hand was old looking, wooden staff. He didn't waste any time as he propelled himself with winds currents towards me. His sword hit my barrier, creating ripples on its surface. I prepared my claws to strike again, but he propelled himself away from me, creating a space between us.
"[Wind Slash]" he slashed his sword several times in my direction, creating blades made out of the winds that were sent flying towards me. I moved to the side and dodged while casting five magenta lightning from my staff. Enemy propelled himself to the side, dodging all of my lightning before propelling towards me with his sword. That time I was ready and swung my claws towards a sword. Claws passed through the winds surrounding the blade and cut it in half. With a surprised expression, the enemy distanced again, releasing another slave of wind blades. I tried to jump away, but a vortex of winds formed around me, pressing me to the ground. Blades hit my barrier, chipping around 10% off it.

I retaliated with my lightning. Few magenta-coloured arcs flew towards an enemy. He pointed his staff towards lightning. Shield out of winds took shape. Lighting stroke his shield. Not giving him any space, I cast a second barrage. His shield held, so I threw the third one. Lighting hit a shield dispersing it before continuing towards that man. He propelled himself out of their way.
'It looks like I need a stronger spell so that it's about not causing too much collateral damage.'
I blinked out of the winds binding my movements. Magenta coloured plasma started to pour out of my staff, flowing around me in spirals. The enemy threw another salvo of wind blades towards me. I just tanked them as my barrier dropped by another 10%. More and more plasma poured out of my staff to join the whirling mass of it around me. The temperature of the surrounding air started to increase, and the floor under me caught fire. Another salvo of wind blades flew towards me. The mass of plasma around me moved and intercepted a portion of them. I kept burning my mana, turning it directly into plasma without weaving any magical circuits to control it. I was using [Plasmakinesis] to control it. Then I willed it to move. Like a long snake made out of plasma, it moved towards an enemy who released another barrage of wind blades. I swung a snake of the plasma like a whip to destroy blades of winds. They were swapped out of existence.
Then I increased my concentration and used a [Telekinesis] to increase the strength and speed of my control over plasma in the air even more. I launched plasma towards and enemy with a shocking speed. Enemy propelled himself to the side, and plasma flew by him. Before it could hit a wall, it turned around towards an enemy again. I split it into two snakes. Both of them moved towards an enemy, one from each side. He propelled himself again, but I changed the direction of plasma this time, immediately sending it towards a direction where the enemy moved. Plasma caught to him and wrapped around enemies barrier. Plasma coiled around it like a snake around the egg. It expanded and covered the whole enemy, eating his barrier.

The movement of magical energy in the air changed as blue circles appeared under an enemy on the burning floor. In the next moment, he vanished.
'Really? Is this second enemy that teleported away and escaped.'
The fire was spreading through the building. I summoned water, with sizzling sound water extinguished flames. I coughed up as a heavy smoke still filled the room.
Without any further ado, I walked towards a secret room. Doors were still open, so I stepped inside. The room was small, with only two meters to each dimension. There were two shelves and a small desk with a drawer. Both of the shelves were already empty. There was no speck of dust signifying that they were previously full. I opened a drawer with my last hope, but it was empty.
'Let's see if this, the trick works. ' I grabbed a drawer and tore it from the desk. In the drawer socket was a lonely list of paper. It was a trick that I learned back on earth where I used it sometimes when I couldn't find something, and I was sure I placed it in a drawer. As a drawer was full, an item from it could very easily slip to the space behind it.
I started to read but stopped as all of it was just gibberish.
'Is this some kind of code? I am not sure about how to break it... I even doubt that it would be faster than growing a dungeon.'
I stowed paper into my [Item Box].
New strong auras appeared closing on the building.
'As always, they are late.'
I walked back out of the house, where a few darks with various weapons already stood.
"I found their hideout, they took most of the stuff, but you can search it. Maybe you will be lucky."

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
