《Reborn: Last Chance to Ascend》40. Chase

Day passed since I placed an order for armour, and I studied the mana purification circuit in my room.
'Hmm, no matter how many times I use this circuit, no new skill appears. I probably need to practice complete arcane spells.'
"Bang!" a loud sound come through the window. I stood up and looked outside. Smoke was coming from various places in the city.
'Is this a siege? No, probably just some religious fanatics that are not content with a new government. Or maybe family members of soldiers that died during the takeover. The question is, what should I do with it... Ohh, I will go out. There is a chance that some of that idiots will try to attack me. I doubt they are strong enough to hurt, so I am a good bait.'
I opened my window and jumped out of it. Midway to the ground, I spread my wings and flapped them stabilizing myself in the air. My room was on the highest floor, so there was a considerable distance between me and the ground. Then I speeded up towards the nearest source of the smoke. It looked like a government building as there was still and heraldry of the previous lord on the wall. It was a three-story tall building with a decorated facade, and flames surged out of its windows. The crowd already gathered around the place.
'Shit, it would be bad if a fire spreads.'
Still unnoticed by a crowd that was distracted by a fire, I started to gather mana. Eight spheres of rotating water began to form in front of me. They grew until they reached the maximal size, and then I sent them flying through the windows into the building.
Hissing sound together with steam came out of the building, but the fire was still blazing. The crowd already started to focus on me as they searched for the source of water. They looked like they didn't know who I was and started to cheer me.

I ignored their cheering and cast another batch of [Waterballs] and sent them flying to the flames. I had to repeat it five more times before the fire finally died out.
A magical aura flashed down on the street, and a massive arc of lightning flew from a robed figure towards me. Lightning hit my barrier and dispersed in the storm of crackles.
'Here you are. They are fools that think they can beat me.'
Three spheres made out of the purple flames formed before me, and I sent them flying towards the attacker. Figure made a weird gesture with their hands, and shield made out of the lighting formed in front of them. My [Deathflame Firebombs] hit the shield and created a massive purple inferno. Flames dissipated as an enemy figure making gestures in quick succession appeared from behind a smoke. Lighting tendrils started to form in their hands, damaging their surroundings. Tendrils connected together and formed a wide beam of lightning. I blinked out of its way. Lightning hit the building I stood on before, making a massive hole in it. Crowd already started to disperse while screaming in panic, preventing me from throwing another attack.
'This is fishy. He is definitely not just some local unhappy citizen. He is too strong for that...'
The world around me changed as I blinked towards the last position of the attacker. I couldn't spot them. He vanished together with a crowd. But I still could see their aura that was like a torch compared to the candles of other people in the crowd. I spread my wings and launched myself to the air to chase them. With a few flaps of wings, I moved above the running crowd.
'Shit, I see him, but I can't attack him when he uses that crowd as cover. That would totally destroy my public image. I will follow him. Sooner or later, the crowd will grow less dense.'
The hooded figure kept running together with a crowd while occasionally turning to look at my winged figure above a crowd. The crowd, together with him kept moving through the streets. With each sideway, the crowd grew less and less dense.

"Cease this commotion!" eight figures in masks and robes arrived at the street, shouting at the passerby. They were darks looking for the source of the commotion.
"Attacker is in the crowd. Disperse them so I can isolate the attacker." I shouted at them, making them act.
One of them shouted back at me, "Attackers appeared in multiple locations! Some of our patrols were attacked too. Our communication stones are ringing nonstop."
Then the darks dived into the crowd and started to cast stunning spells around them. Blue flashes of [Stuning Bolts] and white shockwaves of [Kinetical Waves] were flying and hitting people in the crowd. People were falling to the ground, but the crowd grew only more wild and trampled over the stunned people.
'This is exactly what I wanted to avoid. Why are all of my spells only about big explosions...'
The crowd finally started to split after a brutal suppression attempt of the darks. I aimed my finger at the running figure of the attacker and fired a [Stun Bolt] from above. Barrier appeared around an enemy and absorbed my stunning lightning.
"Fuck this!" I ejected my claws to the maximal length and directly dived towards the enemy. They looked over their shoulder, made a gesture with their hands, firing a beam of lightning towards me. I slightly shifted sideways, and a lightning beam passed by my side, continuing towards the sky.
Seeing that enemy formed two blades made out of the lighting in their hands bracing for an impact. The crowd around created a space as they fled from the attacker. Then I used [Wind Dash] skill to speed myself even more. My claws met with a lightning blade, effortlessly passing thought. A barrier appeared around my enemy. My claws passed through it and stabbed the enemy into the middle of their chest. At the same time, enemies lighting blade hit my barrier, creating an energetical charge between us. Both of us were sent flying in the opposite directions, accompanied by electrical sparkles.
I crashed towards a wall of a building, creating a few cracks in the facade as my barrier absorbed the damage. Darks joined a fight, rushing towards an enemy, wanting to capture them alive. The enemy stood up and coughed out a blood before taking out some scroll and chanting.
'I should stop it. It is either some insane spell or some teleportation stuff.'
I looked around, and no people remained as they had already escaped giving me space. I quickly stood up and cast [Destruction Solarbeam] towards my enemy. I aimed my hand towards an enemy, gathering an incredible amount of mana. The bright purple beam that looked like a solar eclipse erupted from a space between my hands and headed towards the enemy. His hood fell during a fight showing his panicked expression as he faced a beam. He immediately made a gesture with his hands, and lighting shields appeared in front of him. Beam met with shields creating an explosion of elements. The shields shattered one by one in quick succession, and the beam met with his barrier. The roaring sound of the blasts kept echoing as an insane amount of energy got absorbed or deflected. My eyes kept burning away and regenerating, making me tear from the pain. Only two seconds and the barrier started to flicker before it shattered with the sound of breaking glass. I immediately stopped my spell, wanting to catch the enemy to interrogate him.
