《Reborn: Last Chance to Ascend》27. Cathedral 1/2

We finally entered a cathedral. Everyone from my group looked tense, ready to be ambushed any second. We walked into the grand hall with a high ceiling supported by giant pillars. The light was coming inside through the stained windows showing various holy images. A bunch of desks for praying were in front of a majestic golden altar. I looked around, searching for any threat, but I didn't spot anything, even with my [??? Astral Eyes]. Everything was disturbingly quiet.
'Weird, I was expecting some kind of welcome party. Where are they hiding?'
"Maybe they already escaped from the city?" Rose opened a discussion.
A leader who, for the first time, brought out his staff made out of black wood and joined a discussion, "Pchhh, these fanatics would never leave. They are probably preparing something. Let's search a ground level at first. After that, we will split. One group will go upstairs, and the other will go downstairs."
Suddenly a voice came out of the bronze pipe coming from the floor. "Hohoho, you will all die. You fools holy fire of angels will burn you into cinders. As I a great man of god managed to summon an angel!!! Hahaha".
After a few moments of his maniacal laugh, a floor cracked as a massive pillar of golden flames came. Walls started to tremble, and windows shattered. I jumped out of its way, but one of the darks who wasn't so lucky got caught by it. His body evaporated almost instantly.
A massive humanoid figure made out of golden flames, with a pair of glowing wings, come out of the hole in the floor.
"Ohh, shit," Rose shouted.
My staff appeared in my arms, and my mana started to condense into a dense ball of plasma. Before the angel fully emerged from a hole, a purple ball had already flown towards it. Angel moved its arm at incredible speed and released a sphere of golden flames towards my attack. They met and exploded in a blinding explosion.
'This will be hard.'
Rose, Leader and others started their attacks. Fireballs and bolts of different colours flew towards an angel. But before they could reach him, he flapped his massive wings, releasing a golden wave, which dispelled any spell it came into contact.
"I Siriel, the angel of the lower flame circle will burn away all of your sins!" a menacing but beautifully voice flooded everyone ears like spring water sounded through the whole room.

I released a burst of purple lighting towards an angel. He moved his shining wings and shielded himself from it. Lightning hit his wings and harmlessly dispersed into a purple spark. Then it clapped his flaming hands and released a massive wave of golden flames. There was nowhere to dodge, so I just braced myself for the impact. Flames collided with a barrier before flowing around like water around a stone, only dealing minor damage.
"Ahhhh, Aaah!" a painful shrieks came from behind me. I quickly turned my head and spotted that a few of the darks burst into golden flames. They threw themself to the ground and started to roll around while crying in pain. A few moments later, only cinders remained after them.
In an angry tone, the Leader lamented as he formed a massive sphere of red flames on the tip of his staff. "How is this possible? How could such a fool as a Sulivan summon an angel? This is impossible! [Nether Fireball]. Buy me some time I have a solution".
A bright red sphere of fire flew on the angel, but he simply moved out of its way. But in the meantime, I already finished casting of [Bending Destruction Beam]. Beam moved towards an angel, so it released its own beam of golden flames to counter it. Two beams met each other, creating a blinding light that filled the whole room. At the same time, a myriad of spells cast by the darks flew towards an angel once again. He flapped his wing, releasing another wave of light that dispelled all weaker spells. I used that minor distraction to move my beam a little bit. It flew by the side of an angel.
Meanwhile, the angel's beam moved towards me, but I moved with a [Wind Dash] to the side, dodging while still releasing my beam. My purple beam bent behind an angel and hit him from the side. Angels shrieked and interrupted his beam as my beam burned away some of its flames. He flapped his wings and disappeared in a golden flash. Suddenly something massive hit me from behind me and sent me flying. "Bang" I hit a stone wall of the cathedral with my head. Luckily barrier flashed and protected me from an injury. With my legs shaking from a shock, I stood up.

"HOW DARE YOU TO INJURE A SERVANT OF GODS? You, mortals, are just ants in comparison to us."
"You know that this is not a proper angel-like behaviour? Right?" I provoked it to attract its attention to me.
A massive amount of energy started to gather around an angel, forming a mass of golden flames around it. I also gathered plasma into a concentrated sphere which I released towards an angel. Angel just stood on a place and folded its wings around itself, forming a golden barrier protecting its whole body. Plasma hit an angels barrier with a blinding flash. When my eye recovered, I saw an angel standing uninjured in the middle of a puddle made of molten stone.
Then he aimed his arms towards me. My instincts screamed at me to dodge, so I blinked to a different location. A millisecond later, a massive beam of flames containing horrifying magical energy flew by a place I stood before. It hit a wall of the cathedral, melting it without any resistance before continuing into a sky where it exploded in golden firework that lighted up the whole sky and dispersed rain clouds over the city.
'Shit, a moment later, and I would be gone. What are others doing?' I found them holding their hands while standing in a circle. Red symbols were materializing in the air around them.
I had no idea what were they doing, but I knew that I had to buy them more time. I quickly opened a CE store and unlocked a [Multicast] to help me.

You learned a new skill [Multicast I]
Then with a new skill, I started to cast two [Empowered Death-Infused Focused Plasmabombs]. Two spheres of plasma started to form and orbit around my staff at the same time. 'It really works, I am basically casting just one spell, and the system automatically mirrors my casting to form a second one without any extra mental effort '.
Meanwhile, angel fired a burst of golden fireballs on me. Five of them flew on me. I quickly jumped out of their way. They passed by me and hit a wall behind me, causing a series of explosions. Another valley of fireballs flew towards me. This time didn't manage to dodge all of them as I couldn't cast a blink. Due to my casting, one of them hit me and engulfed my barrier in flames. Finally, my plasma bombs formed, and I released them towards an angel.
Angel flapped his wings multiple times at an incredible speed. Every time a golden wave of energy came out, every time and energy met with plasma bombs, it caused the spheres of plasma to shrink. But they still managed to reach an angel that used his wings as a shield. Blinding flash once again illuminated the whole hall.
My sight returned soon, but the angel vanished. Before I could search for him, I already felt a tremendous amount of mana coming in my way. I quickly blinked away, and a massive explosion appeared in my previous spot.
Finally, a massive burst of dark magic erupted in the room, and someone shouted at me. "Retreat, we have finished our spell."
I did as they said, and a massive burst of a red blood-like magical beam hit an angel. Everything went red for a few moments until only a diminished form of angel remained standing in the centre of the room. All of the darks were lying on the ground, exhausted from using the extreme amount of mana.
"Is it dying?" Rose asked with an exhausted voice full of hope.
Her hopes were destroyed when the angel stood up and looked upwards. "Ohhh gods, you lowly servant asks for a power to destroy these heathens".
Soon massive beam of golden light fell upon an angel. His flames regenerated at an insane speed. And the gigantic holy halo of fire formed around his head as he grew into twice of his original size.
'Shit, of course, there is a second phase.'
I started to cast another spell, but the angel flung his hand in my direction, sending a massive wave of energy. My barrier dropped by 40%, and I was sent flying towards a wall.

8 265The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
