《Spheretesia, a Wanderlust Fantasy》Chapter 10: The Town

Rin quickly loots their cores and heads for the house. He wants to quickly bandage his wound to prevent further blood loss, but he didn’t forget to make sure the house was safe before entering. He didn’t bring his first aid kit with him because he had no more room for it, so he searches the house for any medical supplies.
The only thing that he can find is some alcohol. He grabs some clothes and cuts them into pieces. Then he washes them and his wound with alcohol then wraps the cloth around the wound. This will at least stop the bleeding.
Rin takes a breather inside the house. He will rest here before continuing since he lost a bit of blood and used up his mana. In the meantime, he goes through the house again, but more thoroughly this time around. There was nothing of note until he enters a study room.
One side of the room is an entire wall made of glass with a telescope right beside it. Bookshelves decorate another side and a study table rest on the other. On the table lay a number of books about the studies and theories of astronomy.
Rin spots a binocular on the table and grabs it with delight. Having the tool to scout your enemies from a distance is a huge advantage, proving the binocular an indispensable tool.
Finding nothing else of use, Rin takes out his thermal container to eat a portion of rabbit stew. He started to get a little light-headed when the adrenaline wore off earlier so some food should help him recover a little quicker.
Rin takes a look at his status while eating. The goblins gave 2 exp each, only 1 point more than the bokin at first glance but that gap becomes wider the more goblins he defeat. He thinks of fighting more goblins but then remembers the ambush earlier.
‘The one that slashed me was probably a watchman and only decided to ambush me after seeing the opportunity. Although they reward higher exp, they’re more cunning.’
Rin put 2 points into his mana

Rin feels better after resting for an hour and continues the journey. Although the town is within sight, he can’t see much of it with the binoculars on ground level, so he has to get on higher ground if he wants to survey the area. There's a water tower he can climb but he's hesitant to use it because it’s easy to spot him and it doesn’t provide good footing. His best bet is to go to his old workplace.
It doesn’t take long before he arrives.
The majority of the town contains 1 story buildings. They vary from small family business shops to supermarkets, it's unlike the city that has multiple tall buildings.
The road is littered with animal and human carcasses. Trash and blood also stain the gray pavement. One can only imagine the struggles that ensued here. Surprisingly, not many cars are on the road. Most of them are in the driveway of people’s homes or in parking lots.
After observing the surrounding area, Rin couldn’t help but spot a flock of creatures in the sky.
They are about half a meter tall or half the size of the goblins. They are bipedal creatures with a tail and a pair of bat-like wings. They have 4-finger stubby hands which are not meant for delicate activity. Their face resembles a flat-faced bat with a snout similar to a dog’s and a pair of ears shaped like a fennec fox. The majority of their furless hide are gray in color while only a few are a different color like brown and dark green.
Rin doesn’t know their official name so he decides to call them ‘imps’ for now. They don't look anything like imps, this name is only based on their similar frame.
Rin sticks around to observe them from a distance, he wants to know about their nature and their strength. He stays next to an empty flower shop, if they are aggressive then he can enter the shop and prevent them from attacking him from all sides.
He notices a particular feature that those imps have. The underside of their wings has varying shades. Some are pitch black while others have a lighter shade that reflects the color of their hide, though he doesn’t know if it means anything.

After a little while, Rin notices a small dog that was walking in between buildings. It pokes its head out into the open to survey the area and then continues to walk alongside the wall. The dog was trying to be cautious and avoid danger so it was walking slow. It has not noticed Rin’s presence.
However, an imp resting on a building sees the dog from above. It waits for the dog to stop in place before it swoops behind and grabs ahold of it. The surprised dog makes a high pitch cry and tries to struggle from the imp. The dog almost escape from the imp’s grasp but it suddenly went limp.
The dog is unable to move but it wasn’t dead yet, it was still crying for help. Seeing that its prey is vulnerable, the imp bites the dog’s neck and kills it. The imp grabs the dog and flies atop a building to enjoy its meal.
Rin didn’t miss the detail when the imp’s wings changed color. The underside of the wing was a green color at the beginning, the same color as the imp’s hide. However, after immobilizing the dog, it changed to a much darker shade that borderlines black. He assumes that they can only use that weird immobilizing attack when their wings are a brighter color.
While Rin was observing them, a few of the imps have already noticed him but they don’t seem to show any signs of hostility. They are wary of him but ultimately keep their distance. Seeing this, Rin doesn’t worry about them as long as they don’t attack.
Rin continues deeper into town. He takes a detour to avoid the imps just in case they attack him for getting too close. They may provide levels and cores but he will avoid unnecessary fights and save strength for the ones that actually matter.
After walking for a bit and turning onto another street, Rin comes across a new creature in the middle of the road. It has the body of a koala but the head of a rabbit. The three has brown fur and are the same height as the imps. One noticeable feature is the 5-inch horn adorned on their head. They are currently eating a dead imp with their sharp teeth.
1 notices Rin and charges at him on all fours. The other 2 follow one by one after noticing that their kin is charging into battle. They weren’t intimidated by the size difference at all and rushed at him with no hesitation. Their speed is slower than a dog but faster than a goblin.
Rin puts down his backpack and readies himself to strike when they get close. He has the range advantage so he wasn’t worried about facing them.
When the first one gets in range, it jumps at Rin for more momentum in an attempt to pierce him with the horn. He was slightly surprised of the leap, he thought they would keep charging at him until the end.
Even so, Rin keeps his composure and strikes the koala rabbit creature with the spear. He didn’t have to exert much force since the creature was already bringing itself toward the spear, causing the spear to pierce through it.

The same thing happens with the second sagen and Rin easily defeats it. The third one didn’t waver at all when it saw the first 2 fail. It still rushes at Rin in an attempt to stab him. Rin didn’t repeat the same action this time and dodges to the side. He wants to get used to dodging and these guys are the perfect practice partners.
After dodging to the side, Rin stabs the mid-air sagen before it can land. This strike wasn’t as powerful as the others but it was enough to injure and impair its movement, then he easily finishes it off.

8 193Journey West 5000
With her parents murdered and her brother abducted, a trainee Monk of the Gun pursues the one responsible, the Bull Demon King, undefeated Warlord of the Crimson Army.Struggling to track down her enemy while braving the dangers of the wilds, she enlists the help of Sun Wukong, but 500 years under a mountain have taken its toll. Unstable and weakened, will he be more hindrance than help? Can he become the warrior he once was?A Monk and a Monkey journey across a world...... where the remnants of technology are seen as magic, while pockets of humanity strive to drag themselves out of ignorance.... where the descendants of animal-human hybrids, once created as instruments of war, now seek to dominate the world as demons.... where beings who call themselves Immortals and Gods preoccupy themselves with selfish pastimes, ignoring everything else. Among other things, a story about growth, grit, and being better than the person you were yesterday. Here's my rambling on why I'm writing Journey West 5000. Journey West 5000 is my crazy ambitious writing project to adapt a classic epic called "Journey to the West" for a global, modern audience. It's a sci-fi story disguised as fantasy, and has some road trip + monster of the week elements (as does the original Journey to the West). No system, definitely no harem, gradual power progression. Hmm, what else can I put here so potential readers know what to expect? My writing style for now is mostly "show don't tell", because I believe that readers don't need to have everything pointed out to them, and that they should be allowed to make up their own minds about characters based on the actions of those characters. I'm also trying to be less long-winded (a weakness pointed out by some friends) in order to write according to something Neil Gaiman said, which is to write as though I'm the one who has to pay for every word, not the reader. This will bring down my chapter word counts, and might drive away potential readers, but I believe there's value in learning to compress and be concise. All chapters posted here will have been edited. Constructive criticism, comments, and feedback would be very much welcome and appreciated. Please, please help point out any typos or grammatical mistakes, I'm striving to minimize those as much as possible. Above all, I hope you enjoy my story.
8 211Unwitting Champion
"In stories this is always easy. There's magic and powers, and quick steps to claiming that power for one's self. This doesn't feel true for me. I'm supposed to be a Champion, whatever that means, and yet I don't feel important. I don't have all the bells and whistles, which honestly feels familiar even in a new world. But what was I expecting? I haven't had the worst life - there are people with worse problems than mine - I've known what it is to struggle, to be pulled down instead of being helped up.This is nothing new."When in great peril, the Kingdom of Althor has no choice but to send a call into the void, beseeching the Fates to bring them a man who would save them from the coming darkness. Unfortunately the path the Fates chart is often unknowable to men and the Champion who appears is not what the kingdom expected.Unwitting Champion is a story of a guy displaced, dealing first and foremost with trying to survive in a world where he is no longer a person but a tool, and - at least from the reaction of those around him - a shoddy one at that. His major goal is to survive long enough that either he can run or find a way home, because as exciting as the possibility of learning magic might be, he would rather have a boring life than a short life.
8 500The tales of the Omnidragon
The Omnidragon is a legendary creature, equipped with untold power and mastery over all the elements, then paired with the might of a dragon and the wisdom of the ages. Only a single member of their kind can exist at the same time, and all of them share the same soul. Each time they incarnate, the world is warped with a significant shift in power between monsters and mortals, who both desire the power of this being for themselves... or to take it away from others by any means necessary. Nashariel is the latest incarnation of this incredible being. Born in the city of Andriel, devoted to Astill the Goddess of Compassion, she is torn between the teachings she received and her draconic instincts that push her to fight more and more dangerous beings to return to her old glory. Seen as either a threat or a resource, Nashariel will soon find herself playing pawn in the board of the strong. Will she be able to rise above it? Or will the omnidragon be chained to other's will, and need another incarnation to reach the top? A few notes: 1-This is my first ever novel, and English is not my main language. I'm open to corrections and suggestions! 2- This novel will have a slow start, for a few chapters. 3- The chapter's length varies between 3.500 and 5.000 words, every Monday. There may or may not be a bonus one on Thursdays. 4- Have fun reading!
