《Slayer of Kings》Chapter 14 - Tricked Into Battle

Leo soon reached the area from where the explosion originated, he saw a girl backed up against a tree and two men stood in front of her holding swords in their hands.
The girl had long dark red hair that was tied up in a ponytail he was unable to make out the color of her eyes from this distance but it looked to be either black or brown; she looked the same age as him and wore a light yellow dress her skin was filled with scars from which blood oozed out.
The two men were dressed in all black they had their faces covered with the same mask it had green colored lines that ran along its sides while the rest was black with two holes for the eyes.
Leo was hiding behind a tree a few meters away from this distance he was able to hear their conversation.
"No hard feelings but its orders from the higher-ups we can't do anything other than follow their order," Said one of the two men as he pointed his sword towards the girl ready to execute her at any moment.
Even though death looked certain the look in the girl's eyes said she was not afraid of it, this surprised Leo as most people would be unable to remain calm in the face of death,
There was no reason for him to intervene and save her even if he wanted to he would have to battle the two who wanted to kill her and with his lack of magic that was easier said than done.
As he watched this scene, unfold he realized that the girl was now looking towards him he was surprised that she found out where he was as even though he did not have the power of his past life to aid him he believed he had hidden really well without them.

The girl looked at Leo with a smile which in turn caused a bad feeling to swell up in Leo's stomach "Look over there my prince has come to save me!" She shouted in the loudest voice she could muster in her injured state.
This action shocked Leo as well as the two men 'What? Why did she point at me? And how am I a prince?' Leo questioned himself.
The two men looked in the direction the girl had pointed and saw Leo standing behind a tree "Oh your help has arrived too bad he won't change anything" Said one of the men he looked towards his companion and said, "I will go and take care of him you watch the girl".
He charged with his sword towards Leo who thought 'Damn, why did I come here?' He now had no other option than to fight, or he would be killed, he had no power all he had was a dagger while the person coming towards him looked to be powerful.
Leo's only option right now was to keep evading the attacks, but for how long? And will he even be able to evade attacks with no power?
The man's silver sword came slashing towards Leo, who slid to the left barely managing to dodge the sword, however, the man did not stop he continued with his next attack towards Leo who was barely managing to dodge the attacks as they came even then Leo's body started to accumulate minor scars.
The reason was not Leo being slow instead it was the fact that the difference in speed between a person with magic and a person with none was too much. Leo's mind reacted in time, however, his body was unable to keep up with it.
The other person that was with the man who was fighting Leo had a smile on his face. He knew very well that his companion would be able to kill Leo.

As he watched the fight enthusiastically, however, he felt a hand behind his chest then came the felt his body being paralyzed after that his vision started to blacken, he then fainted to the ground.
As he fell to the ground, it was noticed by his companion 'Fuck, this is not good' He looked at the girl who some time ago was on the verge of death but now had managed to knock out his companion.
The grip on his sword tightened and his eyes looked sharper he decided he would first finish off Leo quickly then he would take care of the girl.
He raised his sword towards Leo who held a dagger in his hand.
But just as he was about to attack Leo a white beam came rushing towards him, he shifted his attention from Leo to the white light; he deflected it with his sword which was now covered by a layer of water but before he could relax another beam came towards him which made him use his the water covered sword to deflect the attack once again.
"Is that all you got?" He asked arrogantly to the girl as he now faced her instead of Leo. The girl smiled hearing the man's words then she closed her eyes and raised her palms towards the man.
A beam made of light much bigger than before charged towards the man who in turn raised his palms as water rushed out of it the two beams collided and managed to cancel each other out.
Then just as he thought the attacks were over an even bigger white beam came towards him, he used his full power to defend against this attack which in turn created a huge explosion as the dust began to spread.
He stabbed his sword to the ground and used it to prevent his body from falling to the ground as he tried to stand up a dagger came at him from his right side before he could react the dagger had already pierced through his skull and into his brain.
The man tried to look for his killer who was it? Was it the girl? Was it the guy? But his life left him before he could get an answer.
In the moment of death, he hoped that the person who killed him was the girl and not the guy as he did not want to die at the hands of a non-magic user.

How the Stars Turned Red
Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. Cover art by Rhodex Designs (FB). Hope you like long chapters and adjectives. Note: English is not my first language. Another story set in the same universe, written by a good friend
