《Slayer of Kings》Chapter 13 - Crystal of Fate

The room was much darker than the ground above. The only source of light was from the hole created due to the fall of the terrain, but that light brought no major visual change to the room.
The room was barely visible to him. What filled the room was a desk and a chair; he edged closer to them the desk and chair which looked like they could fall apart anytime.
On the desk were four things, a pen, a letter, a circular crystal and a holder for the crystal made of wood. The surface of the table made Leo feel that if he were to blow at the desk, then he would not stop sneezing for a day.
The paper had turned yellow. The writing implied whoever wrote it was in a hurry also the writing came to a stop with a slash of ink that ran from the last letter out of the paper.
Leo didn't want to take the paper in his hands because he was certain if he did then the paper would fall apart. He moved closer while making sure not to touch the desk and chair. He then read the letter but the bad handwriting coupled with the hurry of the writer made it difficult for him to read.
He wondered if whoever wrote this had a bad handwriting, or it turned bad because said person was in a hurry.
'To the fated one that reads this, to the one that shall carry this destiny, to the one whose life shall be changed, to the one who seeks power, vengeance, love do not be blinded by this world to know the truth look at the strong, to know the world look at the weak, let this be the power that changes the...' The writing cuts off.

'Who could have written this? And what made them be in such a hurry? Leo wondered, failing to come up with any answers he shifted his attention.
When he picked up the round crystal, it gave him the same feeling as picking up an ice cube. With the crystal in his hands, he could see it more clearly. It was light black with small dots of white light that mimicked the night sky.
As Leo held the crystal the white dots of light lit up starting from the center, it made its way to the edge of the crystal.
Shaking his hand, he tried to let go of the crystal but it stuck to his hand; he tried pulling the crystal with his other hand, but the crystal refused to let go of him.
After a minute passed, the crystal sank into his skin like a boat would as it sank in the ocean; the crystal made its way through his hands and into his chest. It positioned itself in the center of his chest.
Then the crystal released a black mist filled with white dots of light this mist spread across his body starting from his heart and lungs. It made its way to his toes, but to Leo, it felt like nothing was there as he failed to sense anything.
Is it increasing my power? Leo wondered, but he felt no change in his power hence the idea was dismissed.
'Then what is it doing to my body?' He Wondered once again but came up with no answer. He would search for answers once he reached his destination.
It was now time for him to continue on his journey. He went back towards the hole from which he fell. Using the fallen terrain that made a slope he climbed his way back to the surface, but it did not go well as the wound from before caused pain but he made it out.

The wound was getting infected because redness was spreading across the area surrounding the wound; he knew treatment was necessary and needed quickly. Otherwise, the consequences would be exponential.
He set off on his journey once again towards the east while trying to not get detected by any more beasts. He would change his direction as soon as he heard the roar of a beast.
The rain still lingered around, but it was not as heavy as before. Only slight drops from time to time. The sky remained in a gloomy setting.
His destination was Rynce City which was still far away. Leo did not know how he would get there while being injured. The wound in his hand would only get worse as the days go by.
Fruits filled the trees in the area, but Leo refused to eat them as he did not know if they were poisonous or not. He did not want to take a risk especially in a situation where one of his hand cannot function. There were many flowers of various shapes, sizes, and colors. Some grouped together while others grew on their own. Some grew near trees while others grew away from the trees on the sides of the muddy ground.
The forest lacked any clear pathway so Leo had to navigate between the trees.
An explosive sound that rang out from the distance reached his ears. The origin of the sound was not that far away from him, he decided to go and see what caused the sound.

A Prose of Years
For decades, spiritualist Evert Kallstrom and his team have joined in humanity’s millennia-long fight against the beasts. Wielding their weapons and their ki, they fought and killed these great threats to civilization. And yet, despite their efforts, humanity was losing traction in the war. In the last fifty years alone, more cities had been overrun than in all of known history. While most thought the great beasts natural, a few knew the terrible truth. They were the product of a dark lord, who desired neither fame nor wealth nor power. Instead, his sole purpose was the genocide of humanity. While their peers dithered, a small faction of the strongest mankind had to offer—including Evert Kallstrom and his team—set out towards the Deadlands to find and confront this dark lord. After weeks of travel, twenty-one spiritualists found themselves approaching an ancient fortress wherein rested a being known only as the Eastern Guardian. All they found was death. But death has other plans for Evert. Evert bolts awake in his 16 year old body near his hometown, decades in the past. He is confused, poor and weak. But with grit, sweat, and years of experience, he won't let the future repeat itself. That level of strength won't be enough by itself (it wasn’t last time) and victory is hardly assured (he’ll need to reach farther and higher than he ever did), but Evert refuses to squander a second chance. [Other tags: First Person POV, Hard Magic, Faulty Memory] Volume 1 is complete and has been fully released. My current intention is not to write any sequel volumes. That said, I have also released appendices (SPOILERS) that cover the worldbuilding and future story-that-never-was. Comments suggesting fixes for grammar, misspellings, etc. appreciated. Note: If you came here from Candlelit Lives, these stories have nothing in common.
