《The Shadowhelm Wolves (The Moonlight Chronicles Book 1)》Chapter One: A Case of Lupine Proportions

“The meanest dog you'll ever meet, he ain't the hound dog in the street.
He bares some teeth and tears some skin, but brother, that's the worst of him.
The dog you really gotta dread is the one that howls inside your head.
It's him who’s howling drives men mad, and a mind to its undoing.”
~ Hadestown
Rain pounded on the dingy, lightly dusted window of a small detective's office and while Detective Brynn Frost waited for the storm to pass, she decided to review a case file that had been thrust at her by one of the lieutenants.
The exact words of the said lieutenant, who went by the name Jackson Harding, had been - 'You like weird cases, Frost. This one should pique your interest.' Harding hadn’t been wrong, but there was something about this case that just didn't sit right with Brynn. Something felt off. The file folder and her own mind were quite contradictory. The little voice in her head was practically shrieking 'Something doesn't feel right, Brynn. Stop reading, go back and forget about this case!'
But of course, Brynn wasn't one to ever give up. She had always been the follow-your-gut type. At that moment, her gut was telling her to go to Pennsylvania and solve this mystery already. The folder that Lieutenant Harding had so brashly shoved at her talked of a string of murders had taken place in Shadowhelm - some Pennsylvanian town that she'd never heard of in the thirty years of living in the good ole U.S.A. Reportedly, people from several cities in several states - including Brynn's own hometown and current stomping grounds of Austin, Texas - had either gone missing or had been found dead after finding their way to Shadowhelm. Those found dead had varying degrees of wounds, ranging from lacerations to a missing appendage or limb.

Brynn sighed and called up her partner, Austin PD's medical examiner, to explain the situation before-hand, as she scurried through the three flights of stairs to his lab. When she got there, his face lit up in his customary goofy smile, as if he'd just won the lottery or an all-inclusive cruise. As she rounded the corner, she heard him exclaim, "Is it Christmas? This is the best damn gift I've ever gotten!"
'Glad he's happy,' Brynn thought as she chuckled. "No, Rex, it isn't Christmas. I'm guessing you saw the file, and that's why you're happy?"
Rex Snow, the medical examiner for the Austin Police Department and Brynn's partner-in-crime (or rather, solving crimes) was a blond-haired, blue-eyed dreamboat of a man. But what was Brynn thinking? He was way out of her league, even by Texan standards, or Southern standards in general. She knew that they'd always just be friends, as Rex was only attracted to men - not that it mattered to Brynn, though.
Rex’s voice caused Brynn to snap out of her reverie, "Hey, Brynn, are ya okay? You spaced out for a sec there." He looked concerned, his brows mashed together. He genuinely had a heart of gold, Brynn thought to herself before replying.
"I'm fine, but thank you for your concern," she smiled and took a look at the copy of the file that Harding had no doubt faxed to Rex. 'Damn that guy,' she cursed. Did he think she was incapable of filling in her own partner? Whatever the case, it wasn't worth her time worrying about it.
Rex smiled again. "You're welcome," he said before turning to the desktop computer. "Look at this, Brynn," he said, "this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen." He motioned to the image of a blood spatter that was on the computer screen. "It's like a Rorschach test, but darker."

Brynn rolled her eyes and sighed. "You're so dorky, Rex," she said while chuckling. "But you've got that classic Southern charm, so you get bonus points.”
Rex just laughed. "Glad to know ya think that, Brynn. Means a lot, y'know?" He flashed a grin that showed teeth white as fresh-fallen snow. Dang, was it infectious, because Brynn herself found her smiling along with him. "Anyway, we should get back to the, uh, the case," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm gettin' this really weird feeling that ya wanna check it out in person."
A smirk played on Brynn's lips. "You know me well, Dr. Tyrannosaurus," she teased. "Of course I wanna go check it out; how else am I gonna know what's going on in this Shadowhelm place?
Rex shivered a bit, but not from the cold. "Not gonna lie, Brynn, that sounds spooky as hell. But you'll obviously need me to examine the bodies."
"As far as I'm concerned, you're the best at it," she replied, nodding. "It's getting late; I should probably head home, and so should you. Our best bet is to leave in the morning. If we split driving fifty-fifty, it should work out to about eleven hours each, minus any stops we have to make."
Rex nodded. "I'll get us some coffee in the mornin' on my way in and then meet you back here." With that, they parted ways, intent on continuing in the morning.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.

Fortuna Verto
A girl’s luck changes when her world changes upon itself, sending her back and forth between a world she knows and another that shouldn’t even exist. Working with her parallel self from that other world, the two must adjust to their alternate form when visiting the other’s world, as they search for a way to escape the chains of misfortune they are bound to. While this story is the conclusion of the trilogy, it is also fully capable of standing alone in its own light, as the world of Celese itself is no longer a place the characters will be journeying through. However, the events of the story are a spoiler for all previous books, in case that matters to anyone. This book has an additional chapter after the final chapter that represents the trilogy conclusion, and should not be read until all three books are read first. Fortuna Verto continues the events of Essentia Animus to advance society into a sci-fi interpretation of Celese, bringing events to a distant world of another star. At the same time, events interpret a real-world advancement into a similar sci-fi age of another planet that shares Earth’s galaxy, a planet that has also been linked by the Celesi Veil. English remains predominant in both worlds of the story, but the presence of both sides makes certain Aethyx terms stand out, while Earth-styled scientific terms will also stand in a powerful contrast. Instrumentation remains an important aspect of the Elemental Era, but the influence of the gift has grown distant after discovering the superiority of the elements. Harnessing the elements had eliminated some of the original limitations of instrumentation, allowing for a self-sustaining focal source that provides solutions to problems such as automation. This turns the development available from the previous modern-day sense of a fantasy to one that is deep-future. Finally, opening access to the passage across the veil will open this progress in comparison to a very similar deep-future parallel world without such fantasy elements, contrasting the laws of physics with the laws of elements in a convergence of time and space.
