Chapter 56 - Overflowing Anxiousness
‘I will miss this…’
Eating the heated leftovers of the chicken pasta that Leo made for lunch the day before, Rain couldn’t help but sigh in regret.
One of the royal chefs assigned to him was supposed to be the one doing the cooking from the very start. However, after experiencing Leo’s cooking for the first two days, Rain could only dismiss the chef under Leo’s earnest request to take care of the cooking as a ‘freeloader’.
Naturally, the food made by royal chefs was just as astounding as Leo’s if not better, but the fresh taste of Leo’s recipes relieved Rain’s boredom of eating ‘fancy’ food every day…
“He is undeniably the best candidate that I could have chosen within the current decade.”
Even disregarding how satisfied his stomach was lately, Rain had nothing to complain about being Leo’s teacher over the past few months!
As a youth who had barely lived for a dozen years, Leo’s preservation in adhering to his strict schedule gained him more than a few praises from Rain who was particularly ‘stingy’ with his praises. Even then, what really astonished Rain was that he was as strict when it came to applying Rain’s advice.
‘To think I thought he was prideful at the beginning...’
The ability to put aside one’s self-esteem in order to improve the best was a characteristic that could be rarely found, especially in the current era where some could kill just to satisfy their pride.
‘I thought I had just underestimated him, but he simply couldn’t be estimated to begin with.’
Even for someone like Rain whose number of students surpassed the number of existing ‘manuals’, Leo was an abnormal student who seemed both human and inhuman at the same time.
During his morning training, Leo expressed the talent of a monster, comparable only to one more person in Rain’s memory, while at night, his talent regressed back to human levels. This particular contrast allowed Rain to rediscover the joy of being a mentor, something that he lost very early on his path…

Despite being inelaborate regarding his teaching, only hinting at the answers for the questions that might arise in Leo’s path, this mysterious student of his was too good at connecting the dots, directly applying what Rain hinted at as soon as possible.
Hssp…
“Sadly, this can’t go on much longer…”
As he took one last sip of his milk tea, Rain stood up as he let out a disheartened sigh, feeling quite contradictory himself.
‘I should be happy, but…’
Finally making his way into the porch, however, Rain’s oral cavity couldn’t help but widen!
‘Ha?’
It seemed like his intuition was as sharp as his insight today…
`~~~`~~~`~~~`
Swish! Swoosh! Shwish!
Seeing that the deck chair was still empty by the time he was done warming up, Leo waited an extra 5 minutes before he continued according to schedule.
‘Even if it isn’t the goal… I should be pretty close, right?’
Leo’s excitement to wield a supernatural ability had carried him far, but at this point, his resolve couldn’t help but waver.
Over the last five months starting from the moment he confirmed the positive effect of ‘mastering’ the ‘Universal Sword Breathing’, his ‘Personal Statistics’ segment kept changing considerably…
Even though there was no increase in Sword Breath gain after his mastery went up to 9 points, the extra 0.01 points he gained after the mastery was maxed up 2 months ago further accelerated his progress.
Reaching one goal after another, Leo simply looked forward to the next goal, waiting for a change.

Yet, here he was, only two- no, the first set was already close to done. Only one set stood before him reaching the last of the goals that he had set.

Using Ray’s experience as a reference, Leo guessed that he would be able to finish his ‘Accumulation Phase’ within 6 months at most, double the protagonist’s record. However, being this close to the major goal he had set made various thoughts arise in his mind…
What if he was still incomparable to a protagonist’s ability despite having better conditions than him? He had the same manual at hand, his teacher’s teacher, and a special ability of his own, but was that really enough to overcome the gap on his peer’s ‘home ground’?
What if his previous ‘illness’ had a negative effect on his ‘Breathing’? What if the required amount wasn’t 100 but 1000 instead?
What if…
Despite Rain’s approval of him, Leo wasn’t sure how to judge someone like himself who didn’t completely belong to this world. He could tell that he was somewhat ‘full’, but the confidence he might have felt was overwhelmed by anxiousness.
In the end, the ‘Personal Book’ that pushed him forward only reinforced these thoughts. As the second set was coming to an end, Leo dreaded the possibility that surpassing its gain would result in nothing.
“No!”
Just as the doubt almost overwhelmed him to the point of being close to running his ‘Sword Calligraphy’, Leo’s grip tightened around his sword trying to get a grip of himself!
His grip kept tightening till his hands were blood-red, only stopping when his skin was about to get ruptured.
‘It overflowed again…’
Taking advantage of his apprehensions, the ‘Read’ emotions that he was used to suppressing almost managed to consume him once more, throwing him into eternal self-denial.
‘So what if it isn’t the goal?’
Although Leo didn’t have the ability to completely suppress these emotions again in their current state, he could only fix the ‘loophole’ that they used to escape their prison.
‘If half a year isn’t enough, I could always do it in a year! If a year isn’t enough, 2 years would still do!’
As a reader, Leo had simply adapted to his new status too quickly, losing hold of what his limits could be. Ironically, he almost considered himself as another main character without realizing it…
‘If 2 years won’t cut it, then I just have to go treasure hunting and any limits would simply disappear!’
Immersed into a role that doesn’t fit him, Leo almost forgot the essence of his ‘role’. Whatever he needed could be obtained with the knowledge he had, he didn’t need to rely on ‘luck’!
Seeking confirmed opportunities still had a certain degree of danger to them, but that wasn’t the limit of what he ‘knew’. There was more than one way to avoid this danger!
Under the threat of mental collapse, Leo was able to realize the core fault that made him vulnerable before it was too late. Reconfirming his standing in a round of self-reprimanding, the berserk emotions had no choice but to retreat to their ‘shell’.
‘It doesn't matter.’
With an ‘ascended’ mind clear of all distractions, Leo acceptingly made the final stroke of his ‘Sword Calligraphy’, calling out to the ‘Personal Book’ to check the result regardless of the outcome.
‘Hmm?’
However, the only thing that Leo managed to see was the Sword Breath statistic blurring out before his eyes lost focus!

Thief of Time
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Book 1: The Legend of Tot Synopsis: Claud Primus, a self-declared master thief, has a simple goal. To live forever. It's a rather easy task, for miraculous objects called lifestones are able to extend one's lifespan. These lifestones are best found in the treasuries of nobles, lovely resorts that Claud pays a visit to every so often. Unfortunately, one of those nightly visits go awry, and Claud is forced to escape with just a single lifestone and a box in hand. Normally, that's when things die down. The guards yawn, the gates close, and the night continues. But this time, the night isn't that forgiving. A dozen schemes result in the murder of someone important, and with a convenient scapegoat — Claud — at hand, it doesn't take long for him to be framed as a heinous criminal, wanted for the indirect murder of someone high up...and it just gets worse from there. Book 2: The Moon Lords' Rise Synopsis: As ordered chaos sweeps across Licencia, Claud leaves for Julan Barony, intent on making some profits there. Accompanied by the erstwhile heiress of Julan, a fellow member of the Moon Lords, the two plot against the barony's wealth...as well as a promise to bring about its downfall. Meanwhile, back home, the Moon Lords have busied themselves with digesting their gains. Eyes, however, are beginning to turn to this proverbial fish in a small pond. The fishermen are coming. When they cast their hook, what will Dia and the others do? Book 3: Murders under the Moons Synopsis: In the sleepy town of Nachtville, where Claud and Lily are forced to stop at, a set of nasty murders occurs. Victims scream out in fright, before a spear falls from the sky to end their suffering. Cowed and cautious, the master thief and his partner slink in the shadows, their objective that of home... A new task, however, has fallen on Dia. With a trusty helper at her side, she has to set off towards Nachtville itself, to solve the mystery Claud had abandoned. Faced with an enemy whose sole skillset is geared towards killing, how will they succeed? And what dark secrets will they find? Book 4: In the Dark of the Moons Synopsis: The year has ended. The four months of the full moons will soon be followed by two months of the new moons. Duke Istrel's ascension is around the corner. Amidst this political upheaval, Count Nightfall, Licencia's strongest defender, has been called away. The Moon Lords' largest task yet — to protect Licencia in the absence of its ruler — has begun. And yet, trouble is unrelenting. A distinguished personage, one that Claud fears, has been found dead in the county, his brains dug out and his body disemboweled. The inquisitors of the White Church have been dispatched to investigate and apprehend the murderer...as well as the person behind this puppet. Tormented by a call to fight, Claud directs his eyes out of the city, looking for the puppetmaster. Skulking in the shadows, the master thief will soon confront his greatest foe yet. A foe just like him. Book 5: Moonlit Tides and Darkened Seas Synopsis: A new era has begun. For the privileged, the sands of time dribble away for every passing moment, counting down to the arrival of a entity of mythical proportions. The night now harbours shadows and fog, and operatives of the Moons and the Dark clash in shadow. Claud, as usual, is investigating a spate of nasty disappearances in the city, but little does he know what these disappearances truly mean. And yet, a tide is coming. When it finally breaks, what will he do? Book 6: Secrets in Shadow Synopsis: The person behind a strike that would enter the annals of history flees his home, bringing with him the person closest to his heart into a new land and into a new world. Having left Istrel for the first time in his life, the two of them attempt to settle down in foreign lands, only to be caught in the middle of hostilities between two mighty powers grappling for dominion. Yet, none of that has anything to do with him. Following his desires, Claud eventually makes his way to the fabled Celestia Ruins, a fragment of another world. Bearing witness to truths he cannot yet comprehend, he returns from his exploration, a small break away from the machinations of destiny. One thing, however, is for certain. Destiny will not wait for him. Book 7: Reddest Rage Synopsis: Destiny churns on, heedless of mortal machinations, and Claud watches as the battlegrounds between the Moons and the Dark are drawn up. With the forces of the great Dark occupying Lostfon, Claud comes to a startling realisation — that he may have very well be a murderer of heinous proportions. Grappling with that realisation, he struggles to prepare for his Second Tutorial... Back in Istrel, Dia finds herself confronted with a perennial truth. Even in a time of writhing destiny, the machinations between nobles never cease to end — and unfortunately for her, the group once known as the Moon Lords are forced into dealing with a petty squabble between two counts. What they didn't account for, however, was the startling discovery they would soon make... And the shadow of the Red God's Holy Son behind it all. Book 8: Darkness Descends Synopsis: Nightmares haunt the horizon as Claud sinks and awakens from a seeming dream. What was once illusory begins to play out before him, in a way he cannot imagine. Dia, forced to wield arms, begins and ends a battle that opens her eyes to the vast dangers that lurk in this sundered world. Under the banner of humanity and divinity, she beholds the silent, forgotten protectors of Orb...but there is no forgetting the battle between the divinities. The Dark descends, the Moons writhe, and the horns of war blow once more. But this is not their battle. Not yet. Book 9: Moons Muster Synopsis: As more and more events fall into place, Claud finds himself desperate. Not for himself, but for the person who has turned into his world. Armed with the knowledge of a certain future, he approaches the only person that could possibly help him in his time of need, trading information for a promise of help. With that as solace, he returns to the grim task of understanding and seeking, revisiting an ancient, shattered fragment of another world...unleashing changes that he never knew was possible. Back in Istrel, Dia and the others must now navigate around a familiar spirit, who seeks to investigate the death of his master's Bearer. With them as prime suspects, the Seekers of Life must move carefully...but the Coloured Gods are not the only divinities eyeing them closely. The Moons, bristling from repeated defeats, are looking for new recruits, and the Seekers of Life are prime cannon fodder. Above all, destiny marches on, the unfeeling clock a warning to all. The Trial of Aeons will soon arrive. Book 10: Destiny Divine Synopsis: ??? Release frequency: one every few days or something, I guess. Cheaters Always Win
Chester Everheart knew that life wasn't fair. Some were born in situations where it was almost impossible to succeed, whereas others were born with a silver spoon with everything at their disposal. A scant few were dropped into another world, filled with monsters and magic and forced to fend for themselves. The latter was a rare, somewhat ridiculous trope; but it happened to him anyway. Despite this he followed a motto that applied regardless of the dimension he was in. Playing fair is for suckers, and cheaters always win. Cheaters Always Win is a comedy-adventure that I've had churning in my head for a couple years now. I'd like to think it still has the charm that most LitRPGs have while also being unique in its own way. Every arc of the story will subsequently have a 'Level Complete' chapter that details all the stats, levels, equipment, etc. gained by the main cast of characters.
