《The Chronicle of a Witch》Chapter 41 Rie and Getting Porters

“You can never get bored in this city because every day, something is happening,” I said while sipping tea elegantly. Unfortunately, the place where I was sitting was not beautiful enough to be put into a painting. If it was, someone might paint me sitting like this and sipping my tea elegantly.
“Master, you realize that everything happens because of you, don’t you?” Slimerin commented. By the way, because everyone told me that Panda was scary, I reluctantly asked Slimerin to change her appearance into something else. This time, I asked her to be a deformed bear named Teddy Bear. No one called her scary anymore, rather, it seemed no one really cared what kind of stuffed toy I brought with me.
Anyway, I started eating the piping hot corn soup while sipping tea. Hm? The corn soup was not suitable with tea? My tongue was not that delicate to understand which food was suitable with which beverage. For me, as long as they were delicious, it was alright.
Anyway, I started eating the piping hot corn soup while sipping tea. The place I was at was in the plaza, near the center of this city. Leah was not here with me, as she had to back to the Adventure Guild as soon as possible. It seemed like the Adventure Guild had become her home, though actually, she lived with her sister nearby.
Once again, anyway, there was a reason why I sat in the plaza leisurely like this. I loved seeing people running to and from one place to another hastily. And those people, without doubt, would pass the plaza. For example, the people from the Adventure Guild. They ran from the Adventure Guild to Dungeon, and returned to the Adventure Guild again, without their weapons now. It seemed the Earth Slime had defeated those parties. Or maybe, they were defeated by the common Slimes the Dungeon produced infinitely now.
I had changed the rules of the Boss room. I changed it so the maximum number of people that could enter the room was ten people and the maximum time they could spend inside was half an hour. After that, whether they lost or not, they would be sent back to the first floor. Well, if they didn’t lose, I wouldn’t take their weapons though.
So, seeing the Adventurers going back without their weapons, I knew for sure that they lost a battle. Whether it was against the Earth Slime or against the common Slimes, I didn’t know though.
Another group of people that looked quite busy was the Alchemist Guild. It seemed the people from the Alchemist Guild were going to school and back again. They were sure busy, huh?
By the way, I changed my appearances so right now, I was not Fey or Faye. My name was… Rie. My appearance was similar to an elegant young lady from a noble house that tried to hide her identity as I wore a big black robe. Well, the reason I wore black robe was because of my clothes, cough, I meant, my armor that I couldn’t take off. It would be unnatural for three people wearing a similar dress that could only be found once in a decade, right? That was why I could only wear a big robe like this to cover my dress.

It seemed, every once in a while, I also saw the Knight Order from the Holy Light Church going through the plaza. Their eyes wandered all around the place, seemingly looking for something. Or someone. I hoped they were not looking for me, as whenever I went to the Adventure Guild from school, I had to hide from those people. Seriously, it was really troublesome.
Anyway, right now, none of those groups noticed me sitting here sipping my tea leisurely. However, there was another group that was looking at me. Their eyes filled with hope and wish. Their face clearly showed their expectation while they looked at me… alright, let’s say it clearly. There was a group of children staring at me, or rather, my hand, or more accurately speaking, the food in my hand. Their eyes were full of expectation, as though I would share my food with them.
Somehow, I had a headache. Sharing food with them was not a problem for me, however, I was thinking in the long-term. What would they do next? Would they do this kind of thing again?
As I counted the number of children, there were surprisingly eleven of them. You should make a group of soccer with eleven of them, was not something that I would say. There was no soccer in this world after all. I wondered if I could popularize the sports in my world to this world… well, that was troublesome, so I didn’t want to think about it.
Cough, I was distracted. Now then, the kids. All of them were humans and they were not slaves. Were they from an orphanage? With wars happening between the Empire and the Beast-kins, it was not a wonder that there were a lot of orphans. But shouldn’t the orphan be taken care of by the Empire? After all, they would be the new blood for their army.
“Where are you coming from?” I asked the children, gently. Well, I tried to be as gentle as I could.
“…” The children didn’t say anything and kept looking at me. Perhaps, looking at me intensely was their strategy to get my attention. After all, no one would feel comfortable eating while being looked by a bunch of children, right?
“You want this?” I raised the corn soup in my hand.
“…” None of them nodded. In fact, no one reacted at all. I thought they were scary, seriously.
“…well, if you want, you can nod and I’ll buy one for each of you. If you are not reacting, then that means you don’t want and I will not buy anything for you.” I said.
This time, everyone nodded furiously. So, they understood what I had been saying, huh?
Well, I only tossed them several silver coins though. It should be enough for them to buy food for more than thirty people. After that, they left excitedly, half-running. It seemed they wanted to share their happiness with their friends, huh?
“Master, I’ve put tracking Magic on them. Do you want to follow them immediately?” Slimerin asked. She already knew what I wanted. I patted her head, I meant the Teddy Bear’s head as Slime didn’t have any head, lightly as I finished my soup and tea. After that, I left and followed the kids.

And as expected, those kids lived in an orphanage. The orphanage was quite big and didn’t look bad. At least, it was not old and seemed to be a haunted orphanage. However, that was only the building.
As I entered the orphanage, a pair of boy and girl around fifteen years old or a little older approached me. Their eyes showed a bit of hostility, though I didn’t understand why. No, rather than hostility, it was... cautious?
“What a noble lady like you do here?” The boy asked rudely. Ah, right, I looked like a noble lady, didn’t I? Yep, a noble lady that hid her identity. I was glad because that meant my disguise was perfect to the point that the boy thought that I was a noble lady. Also, it was the first time someone called me a lady, so, I was really happy.
“I’m not a noble though. As for what I’m doing here… let’s say that I have a job for you.” I replied bluntly. I thought it would be better if I spoke right to the point in this kind of situation. Perhaps I was wrong, but I didn’t really care.
“We don’t need any suspicious job from a noble like you!” The boy replied rudely. He didn’t hear me, did he? I told him that I was not a noble.
“As I said, I’m not a noble and the job is not suspicious at all. I just want you, the kids, to be porters. It’s not suspicious, is it?” I asked him while glaring a little.
The boy snorted coldly and looked away, so I turned my gaze to the girl. “What do you mean?” She asked me cautiously.
“Vera, don’t listen to her! All nobles do is trapping you with their words!” The boy pulled the girl’s hand.
“For the third time, I. Am. Not. A. noble!” I glared at the boy again, and again, he snorted coldly. I turned my eyes back to the girl again. “More importantly, I saw the children from this place in the plaza and it seems you have troubles with your finances. Well, forgive me for being blunt, but I think I can help you financially, naturally if you work for me.”
The girl looked troubled as she took a glance behind her. We were still in the yard of the orphanage and there were several children peeking from the door of the orphanage. It seemed the girl was a bit angry at them, huh?
“Sorry, they must be troubling you.” The girl apologized and the boy yanked her hand again and shook his head.
I shook my head too. “No, no, they are not troubling me. In fact, because of them, I got this idea. You see, my friend is a porter for another friend of mine. She brings potions from the Saulia Academy to the Adventure Guild. But with only one person, the number of potions she could bring is limited and that is why, seeing that you seem to have financial trouble, I offer you this job. What do you think?”
The girl was definitely thinking about it, but once again, the boy showed his clear refusal. “Why didn’t you ask the Adventurers to do that kind of thing?”
“Well, I just got this idea after seeing those kids and if it can help those kids, why don’t I use them?” I replied calmly.
“…” The boy didn’t refute me again. While both of them were thinking, Slimerin talked to me through our mental connection.
“Master, do you plan to meet with the children every day to give them the potions?” She asked.
“Nope. I’ll ask for the principal’s permission to let those children enter the dorm, go to my room, and take the potions from there. Also, I’ll ask the children that created the potions to put the potions in my room every day. Yep, that is a perfect plan and after that, I can laze about every single day!” I smiled as I thought of that possibility.
“You sure work hard for a lazy person.” Slimerin retorted lightly, but I ignored her. I worked hard because I wanted to be lazy. Was that contradictory?
“Well, how about you ask the other children about this? I believe they don’t like the fact that only you two work hard, you know? If they can help with anything, I believe they want to help you two, and speaking of helping, don’t you think delivering potions from the Saulia Academy to Adventure Guild is not dangerous at all?” I spoke again to convince them. The boy snorted but the girl was clearly swayed. It seemed that I only needed another push to make her accept my offer.
“Master, don’t forget about the Alchemist Guild.” Slimerin reminded me as I wanted to give them a little push. Oh, I almost forgot about those people.
“…no, honestly speaking, there is a little danger. So, rather than lying to you, I’ll be honest. The Alchemist Guild is trying to get the potions’ recipes, so they might kidnap the porters. However, if that were to happen, I will definitely save them for sure.” I spoke honestly. If I asked Slimerin to mark the porters, she would know the positions of those children and if by chance the children were kidnapped to the Alchemist Guild, we would open the teleportation gate and save them for sure. However, I wouldn’t hide this probability to them, so I spoke with honesty to them.
“This…” The girl was hesitating once again. However, as she was thinking, a loud voice came from behind her.
“We’ll do it! We are going to work! Big Sis Vera! Big Bro Welt! You’ve worked too hard so it’s our chance to help you!” It was one of the boys that I saw in the plaza.
