Chapter 19 – Ascending The Mountain

I looked at the 2 dead wolf corpses on the ground then to my left where Iris was standing, She had already killed her opponents quite some time ago. Then finally I looked up towards the peak of the mountain. Well, this is going to be a long climb.

The sun had finally set and it became colder as night drew near. We better stay warm. Thinking of how we could stay warm, I looked at the wolf corpses and had an idea.

“Iris guard me while I skin these corpses. We’ll use the pelts to keep us warmer, well at least a little warmer.”

I skinned the 4 wolf corpses while Iris guarded me. But as my skinning level isn’t that high, I messed up multiple times. But overall the skinned pelts will help keep us a little warmer.

“I’m not a tailor so I can’t make any clothes so tying the pelts around yourself will just have to do.”

Damn, why didn’t I think of becoming a tailor. I wrapped one of the pelts around my neck almost like a scarf and draped the other one down my back like a cape, Iris did the same.

“I assume we’ll be fighting a lot more wolves from here on out. So I’ll skin more corpses and we’ll add the pelts to our clothing.”

With the cold somewhat taken care of and our stamina replenished, Iris and I began to hike up the mountain once again. It was extremely hard to go up the path now since it’s gotten so dark, soon we won’t be able to even see what’s right in front of us. I better be cautious, if I fell down I would bring Iris down with me.

Slowly but steadily ascending the mountain, Iris and I could hear numerous growls from nearby wolves. But so far none have attacked us yet, probably because they were more cautious of us now since we killed their fellow kin.

*Growl*

|20!|

Awe fuck, I spoke too early. A pack of 4 wolves attacked us. This is probably the worst possible spot to be attacked, the ground was unstable and it was easy to lose your balance.

“Fuck you wolves!”

[Miss]

|25!|

I used [Skull Splitter] on the closest wolf. But due to my unstable stance, I missed the wolf’s body giving the wolf a clear opening to bite my right shoulder.

Aw crap, I wasted my best skill. The wolves were vicious creatures, their [Night Vision] gave them a clear advantage in the dark. It would be almost impossible to see them if their fur didn’t slightly shine against the moonlight and if their eyes didn’t glow a reddish color.

I felt a continuous pain in my right shoulder from the wolf bite. The mobility of my right shoulder has been severely impaired, I can’t move my arm much without feeling the pain. But despite the pain in my shoulder, I still had to defend against the oncoming wolves. I tried to block the wolves attacks while attacking them back with my sword, it wasn’t that effective.

As the battle went on, I could feel the adrenaline flowing throughout my body. With the adrenaline pumping, I could finally move my right shoulder without feeling any pain. Alright let’s do this! The wolves continuously attacked me, but fortunately I was able to use [Skull Splitter] on one of them. Instead of missing this time, I hit the wolf directly in the back.

[68] [Enemy is stunned for 2 seconds]

Pulling my axe out of the wolf’s back, I saw a huge gash. Blood was overflowing from the wound, I cut so deep that I could see the spine. Although the sight disgusted me, I needed to use the 2 second stun to my advantage.

|Miss|

[70!]

The wolf behind me tried to use it’s skill [Sharpened Claws] on me, but fortunately I noticed it at the last second and was able to sidestep the lethal attack. After dodging the attack, I used my axe to attack the stunned wolf in the same exact place I previously hit.

The already horrid wound just became even more gruesome. The stun on the wolf wore off but with an injury like that, the wolf couldn’t move much anymore without howling in pain. Feeling sorry for it, I stab it in the head with my sword and put the wolf out of it’s misery.

[45]

I quickly turned to face the remaining wolf but surprisingly, the other wolf had already ran away into the darkness disappearing from sight. I looked behind me towards Iris. Just like me, one of the wolves ran away after she killed the other. Maybe they will finally stay away from us.

Suddenly all the adrenaline flowing through my body started to dissipate and the sharp pain in my right shoulder came back like an anvil.

“Ahh, fuck!”

Dammit, usually healers would help treat these wounds but since there are no healers here, I’ll just have to endure with this injury until I get treated. But to my surprise, Iris took out some bandages and ointment out of her bag. She cleaned my wound with water from her canteen, applied the ointment and then wrapped it with bandages.

Immediately, I could feel the pain in my right shoulder alleviate. The pain was still there but the ointment and bandages lessened it significantly. I could move my arm around without having to wince every time which was much better.

“So… you’re a medic also?”

Iris nods

I was seriously impressed, most people didn’t bother learning the medical profession because normally healers would be around to treat the wounds. Obviously, medics aren’t better than healers at treating wounds but when healers weren’t available, they were extremely valuable. The disadvantage of being a medic was that they used large amounts of medical supplies and had to make sure those supplies stay sterile. Otherwise they would be forced buy new supplies.

Usually solo players became medics because it would help them greatly on their adventures. Maybe Iris initially wanted to be a solo player.

With my shoulder treated, I quickly skinned the two dead wolves. We were in need of a break anyways since our stamina was running dangerously low. Looking at the two wolf furs, I could clearly see the difference in skill between us. The wolf Iris killed had few but deadly cuts, the wolf probably died quickly without suffering much. But on the other hand, the wolf I killed had several cuts in it, the biggest one being the wound on its back. The wolf I killed definitely suffered a lot before I put it out of its misery.

Learning one’s fighting capabilities through corpses was fairly interesting, maybe this technique could be useful in the future. I finish skinning the 2 wolves and in the end, Iris’ fur came out better than mine because it was less damaged. My fur had a big hole in it, making it somewhat less effective. We applied the furs to our clothing and continued our ascent to the top of the mountain.

I’ve noticed a while ago going up this path, I haven’t seen anything other than wolves so far. It might be because it’s night time but where are the other animals? It makes me wonder what the hell do these wolves eat for food, well other than us….

Moving up the mountain, Iris and I were attacked 3 more times by wolf packs. Fortunately, I’ve gotten used to their hit and run tactics, so dealing with them was a little bit easier. The wolves seemed to be becoming more and more aggressive as we approached the peak. There must be something important they’re trying to protect up there.

I was having a bit of a problem with my shoulder injury. Due to the continuous fighting, my bandages became undone several times. Luckily, Iris had a lot of medical supplies available, so she was able to continuously rewrap my injury again. I felt uncomfortable using all her supplies, I’ll have make sure to repay her somehow later.

Tyhuko: Yeah, you’ll make her cosplay as a nurse.

Our biggest problem now was the temperature and the terrain. The higher we ascended, the colder it became. Plus, now there a layer of snow covered the ground making it impossible to see what was underneath. We had to be even more careful now, if we took a bad step we would slip and fall back down the mountain. That’d probably be the worst possibility that could happen to us right now.

*Ding!*

[You are the first to reach the peak of Sowth Mountain. Fame + 5 Luck + 5]

After 4 hours of strenuous hiking, Iris and I finally reached the peak of the mountain. The top of the mountain was a flat plateau. It was dangerously high, falling would mean certain death. With a layer of snow covering the ground, slipping and falling wouldn’t be uncommon.

I walked towards the edge of the plateau and what I saw was something beautiful. Far off in the distance, the Kingdom of Edilath could be seen. Numerous lights of many different colors illuminated Edilath in the night. The castle in the center of the Kingdom looked dazzling, even more beautiful than in the day. The stained glass windows of the castle glowed elegantly, painting the night sky gorgeously. With Iris by my side, we looked at Edilath in a daze. What a beautiful sight.

Tyhuko: Which one?

*GROWL!*

Suddenly, we could hear a loud growl off into the darkness. But this growl was different from the rest we’ve heard so far, it was much louder, deeper, and fiercer than the others. Then I could hear the sound of rapidly approaching footsteps. What appeared before us was a beast unlike any other.

The alpha wolf was charging towards us at a fast pace. It had a very muscular body with bloodshot eyes that glowed dark blood red, its razor sharp teeth had foam coming out of its mouth. Compared to the beautiful sight of Edilath, this wolf was definitely the exact opposite.

Amos the Dominant [Rank 2 BOSS]

Level: 22

Health 1000 / 1000

Attack: ???

Defense: ???

Abilities: [Night Vision] [Sharpened Claws] [Call Of The Wild]

Amos came charging out of the darkness like a bullet. With only a 5 feet distance away from me, Amos used [Sharpened Claws] striking across my chest.

[Block] |25|

I was fortunately able to block the Boss’ fierce attack, but the resulting impact between his claws and my sword was so immense that it pushed me over the edge of the mountain.

“ARGHH!”

I was rolling down the mountain losing precious health points but luckily my descent was stopped short by a huge rock.

“Fuck, that hurt!”

I lost 110 health points during the attack and the fall, thank god I landed on this rock or I would have died leaving Iris to fight Amos alone. I immediately drank a health potion, recovering 50 health points. I then began my hike back up to the peak in an exhausted state.

My body was aching with pain, cuts were all over my body. My mobility was significantly decreased, I definitely broke a rib or two. I desperately needed a healer to mend my injuries but that could wait for later. Iris is up there fighting the alpha wolf by herself. If this continued, she would most probably end up dead, I needed to help her.

When I finally reach the top of the mountain, what I saw was exactly as I feared. Iris was on the ground defending herself while Amos was readying his attack [Sharpened Claws].

Oh shit!
