《Birth of Mana》Chapter 55 - Trouble Brews

Cruz clicked his tongue in annoyance when he noticed Maya's actions, knowing that her head was cooling off. He had had expected her to have already lost her mind to rage, but that was apparently not the case.
While it didn't affect too much even if she didn't snap here, it would save him much time and effort if she did now rather than later. He had already gone through much trouble to set this up today and was unwilling to give up just like this.
While this was happening, Alz was having a great battle in his mind as he witnessed the scene before him. However, he still managed to keep his calm and didn't rush in to help.
While he felt guilty towards Maya, this was something that he really didn't want to get involved too deeply in. That said, he wasn't planning on just pretending that he didn't see it. He remembered seeing Colt outside earlier when he was on duty and was planning on calling him over.
With this in mind, Alz began to move away from the doorway, heading back from the way he came. However, the Cruz's next words were caught by his ears, causing his leg to stop mid-air while he was still in the middle of his third step.
A bright red flash went through his mind, causing him to burn in anger. He stomped his feet loudly on the ground and turned around with a determined look, barging into the room.
Continuing from before, Cruz was indignant about his taunts failing and decided to kick things up a notch.
"Oh right, your father was a coward just like you. That spineless trash also used to take all our beatings without a single complaint, so I guess it must run in the family."
"DON'T INSULT MY FATHER!" Maya immediately roared back, but her voice sounded more like it was pleading than it was angry.
"Ah, I still remember the time he was holding onto you tightly while being kicked. That look on his face was so pathetic when he desperately begged us."
"SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUT UP!......" Maya repeatedly shouted while shaking her head, trying to drown out his voice with her own. Her fist was clenching tighter and tighter, about to lose control of herself.
" 'Please, leave her out of it, just hit me alone' was it?' HAHAHA! WHAT A JOKE! NO WONDER HE DIED SO SUDDENLY, EVEN THE MOTHER ELF FELT THAT HE DIDN'T DESERVE TO LIVE!" Cruz moved his face up close to hers and directly shouted, seeing that his taunting was taking effect.

Looking at his smug face right in front of him, Maya no longer had the confidence to hold herself back. She inwardly apologised to her tribe members as she slowly raised her fist, wanting to punch him this very moment.
Just then, a loud sound came from outside the room, spreading clearly into their ears. It also didn't stop there, as two more heavy steps immediately followed, closer than the previous step.
Cruz turned to the disturbance with a frown, signalling for his two followers to check it out. However, before they started moving, a figure had already appeared by the door.
The figure was a young elf with bright silver hair and sharp topaz eyes, Alz. He stared at Cruz coldly from the entrance with a look of utter disgust, thoroughly angered by his words.
Alz held a deep respect for his parents, showered with love and care in the days back then. That was the happiest period of his life, where he always knew that he had a warm home waiting for him.
He could never forget their last moments, when they bravely stood against the pack of wolves and their noble sacrifice that allowed him to live on. Without them, he wouldn't have been able to stand here today, something that had brought him pain and gratitude alike.
There were few things Cruz could have said to enrage him, but this was one of them. Alz couldn't bring himself to stand by idly while Cruz insulted her parents, so he barged into the room.
"A child? What? Came to save your girlfriend?" Cruz cocked his eyebrow and asked in an amused voice, starting to relax when he saw that it was just a child. He didn't recognise Alz from their fleeting encounter 6 months ago, but that hardly mattered here.
Cruz signalled for his followers to suppress Alz, wanting to teach him a lesson for interrupting him. The two of them were exchanging glances even before Cruz's signal and one of them lightly nodded to the other.
A moment later, that elf started walking up to Alz with a relaxed grin, showing no signs of worry. Clearly, they thought that one of them was more than enough to suppress Alz who was clearly still just a child.
Cruz was also completely unconcerned by this, turning his attention back to Maya. In his mind, the disturbance was already over when he learnt that it was just a child.
"Don't come over, run away!" Maya cried out weakly. She was touched and surprised when she saw Alz appear, but she similarly didn't think that he stood a chance here. Despite this, Alz simply continued standing in place as though he hadn't heard her.

The four elves weren't really far from the entrance, so it didn't take long for Cruz's follower to get to Alz. After getting in range, he immediately pounced at Alz, wanting to pin him down like they did to Maya earlier.
Maya reflexively closed her eyes, her face filled with dread. However, when she opened her eyes again, the scene before her eyes wasn't the one she had expected.
Alz's gaze sharpened when the follower pounced at him, lowering his body slightly in wait. When he got slightly closer, Alz used the ground for support and landed a hard strike on his gut, knocking the breath out of him.
Alz followed up by grabbing onto his arm and twisting it as he moved to his back. He then delivered a low kick to the back of the follower's knees, knocking him to the ground.
The entire sequence was seamlessly executed, leaving the follower with no time to react. He blanked out for an instant after Alz's initial punch and he already found himself kneeling on the ground.
The only elf who bore witness to this was the other follower, his eyes widening greatly at the shock he felt. His companion might have been underestimating Alz, but that alone wouldn't lead to such a thorough defeat.
Alz strongly elbowed the back of the follower's head to knock him out before returning his eyes to Cruz. He roughly dragged the first follower behind by his clothes and started heading deeper into the room, approaching the group.
Cruz raised an eyebrow at the approaching steps, turning to check out the situation. When he turned his head, he was immediately greeted by Alz's sharp gaze, causing his heart to skip a beat.
"WHY ARE YOU JUST STANDING THERE? GET HIM!" Cruz's voice contained traces of panic, slightly ruffled by the sight of his unconscious companion being dragged across the ground.
Upon hearing Cruz's voice, the other follower gritted his teeth and moved into the way of Alz's path. His expression was tense and serious, the complete opposite of his other companion earlier.
Despite the figure in the way, Alz continued onward without pause, proceeding onward towards Cruz and Maya. When he was about five steps away from the second follower, he suddenly halted and righted the position of the elf he was dragging along.
The second follower revealed a puzzled expression at this, but he didn't intend to let this chance go to waste. He immediately dashed up towards Alz, preparing to take him down with his weight.
Having seen the quick battle earlier, he didn't have the confidence to keep up with Alz's swift movements and was intending to raw strength to overpower him instead.
Yet, he quickly caught sight of a familiar face inching closer to him from the front. His companion was tossed directly towards him and flung across the air like a projectile, slamming him right in the face.
He hurriedly lifted his arms to catch his companion, but the child was no longer anywhere to be seen. Suddenly, he felt a hard impact from the back of his head and his world was painted in darkness, falling weakly onto the ground.
Alz shot a casual glance at the two unconscious elves to his side before looking back at Cruz with the same look he had when he entered, continuing his approach towards them.
Both Cruz and Maya's expression were dyed in shock, but the emotions they felt were completely opposite. As Alz got closer, Cruz began to take several steps back, distancing himself from Alz.
Alz soon arrived at where Maya was laying, finally turning his eyes away from Cruz to her. He grabbed onto one of her arms without warning and started pulling upwards. Maya snapped out of her daze when she felt a pain course through her arm, quickly struggling to stand up.
After standing, she didn't even have time to react before she felt a strong pull on her arm, dragging her towards the direction of the exit.
"Wait, wait... Wait!" Maya continuously voiced it, but Alz continued pulling despite her pleas until she shouted. Alz halted his steps and turned to look at Maya with questioning eyes that contained some displeasure.
"My bow..." Maya's murmured weakly, feeling intimidated by the current Alz.
Alz finally revealed a look of enlightenment and released his grip, freeing Maya's arm. Maya hastily moved over and collected the broken fragments of her bow with a sorrowful expression before returning to Alz's side.
After Maya returned, Alz started walking to the entrance again with Maya following behind.
"W-Wait! Leave your name if you dare!" Cruz shouted from the back just as they were about to leave. Maya turned behind to look at him with a look of worry, but Alz didn't even stop for an instant, exiting the room.
Maya hurriedly followed behind with the bow fragments in her arms, exiting after Alz, leaving behind two unconscious elves and Cruz directing a grudgeful stare towards the entrance.
