《Faceless Phantom》Chapter 23 - Dawn of Phantom (3)

It was really hard to heal a wound. Even if the wound was healed, the scar would still be there. It would always make you remember the trauma everytime you saw it.

Seeing Zeroth's bitter expression, Mirage immediately knew what he was thinking. She already saw his memories after all. She could understand what he had been through. She forced a smile and put her hand on his shoulder.

I was pulled out to reality by a touch on my shoulder. I looked behind in reflex. I saw Mirage's sad face.

Moreover, her attempt at a smile was more of a grimace. I could only reply with another bitter smile. Then I turned my gaze back to the forest outskirt.

My smile was gone, and my eyes became empty.

'Those kind of people do really exist in this world, huh?'

Though I still wanted to understand what kind of thoughts they had that made them doing those kind of actions.

However, I could only frowned in disgust when seeing through them.

'Can I do it?' I thought in doubt.

"Let's do Soul Connect one more time. This time… I'm sure it will be a success."

As if Mirage knew exactly what I was thinking, she proposed another Soul Connect to make me be able to gain access to her skills. She read through me. And she was thinking about using Shapeshift.

There was a few players who chose Aphu as their character, so it would be troublesome for me if someone found out who I was. Especially against those kind of players.

"Okay, but let me prepare something first."

I nodded while taking out Misty Spider's Silk from my bag. Then I set the web on trees and bushes.

The web was producing mist. It was slowly becoming thicker and spread to the forest outskirt.

Though the plan was set, I still worried if I could take them all down alone stealthily within the mist.

However, I might have a chance if I succeed doing Soul Connect with Mirage.

"If I lost…" I faced Mirage and looked at her in the eye. "If I lost, I'll lure them away. And please… Please save those people."

Mirage just smiled and shook her head.

"You don't have to worry. I trust you… You can beat them all. You are strong than you expected."

I felt reassured. I smiled and nodded. I was relieved by her trust.

"Let's do it…"

Mirage nodded and we began to channel the skill.

"Soul Connect!"

Just like before, I felt I was being sucked into oblivion. I watched the same scenes, –Mirage's memories. Then the fog and the images, everything vanished into the darkness.

It was different this time.

A ball of light appeared in front of me. I stretched my hand and touched it. The light becoming brighter and then formed a figure.

The figure was Mirage.

She stood in front of me. She was surprised when she saw me, but then she smiled as bright as the light. I smiled back at her and we brought back to the forest.

Soul Connect's effect can be felt.

I immediately used Shapeshift as if I knew how to use it. And Mirage did the same. I could see her slowly changing into winged white humanoid figure.

Then I lift my hands and saw them changed. They were becoming more slender. My armor also changed and adjusted to my new form.

However, it was then I realized something. I felt like my mind were slowly becoming foggy.

It was like there was a strong feeling coming out from within that wanted to take over my consciousness.

It was an urge to kill those people.

I didn't know why, but I was holding… Trying not to be controlled by that very feeling. But it was slowly getting stronger and stronger. I tried to see Mirage for one last time. Her face…was changed.

Her face became faceless. And her faceless expression saw through me.

'I'll support you from here.'

It was like a telepathy, I immediately knew what she was thinking.

Then the feeling inside me began to burst out. And I began to walk toward those bastards.

・・・

Mist was coming from the woods, slowly crawling and blanketed the air around the outskirt of Lanarea Forest. Because of that, the temperature slightly became colder.

A group of people were witnessing this very moment, and thus they were shouting at each other.

"What is this!?" Said the Light-Armored Human while looking at the mist around him.

"The fuck I know!" The Sleethar answered him in a confused manner. She was slowly walking backward, trying to get near her comrades. She needed to do that to feel safe.

"Is this an event!?" The Robed Elf gave an idea. "We've been killing noobs long enough in this area. This is the first time we've seen this, right? This is really strange."

"I don't know. Maybe it's just the weather." The Wolfman doubted the Elf's idea. However, looking at his expression, he probably just wanted to argue with the Elf.

"Are you kidding!? The change is too fast it's unnatural." The Elf raised his volume.

"Meh. You're just overthinking shit! It's a game, it's just a weather effect from the game."

"Tsk!" The Elf clicked his tongue.

He was really annoyed about how the Wolfman made everything as if it was normal. Sometimes, he wondered if he was just roleplaying.

However, looking at him right now making him sure that he was nothing but muscle brain.

"You really are matching with your own character."

"What did you just say!?" The Wolfman began to lose his temper.

"HEY SHUT UP YOU TWO!!! Did you hear that!?" The Sleethar intervened and shushed them.

"What are you talking ab-" The Wolfman words were cut after he noticed what was the Sleethar said.

They were all becoming quiet.

Faintly from the forest, a voice was heard. It was a high pitched voice similar to opera singers would make. It was really beautiful yet mysteriously eerie.

The song was steadily becoming louder, and it made all their gaze focusing toward the forest.

A shadow appeared within the mist and walking out from the forest. Everyone started to gulp their own saliva and cold sweat droplets could be seen on their faces, slowly rolling down from their forehead to their cheeks and chins.

They kept looking at the shadow. No footsteps were heard, yet the shadow was, slowly but steady, walking toward them.

"B-boss…" The light-armored human called his boss in nervous.

It was obvious that he was scared. However, his boss ignored him because he was a new insignificant member.

The boss was enjoying himself, stripping the girl who he was sitting on. The girl was crying while trying to close her legs.

"Bitch, stop resisting!"

Smack!

The boss slapped the girl while forcefully spreading her legs. Looking at the scenery in front of him, he was licking his lips that formed a wide smile on his face.

However, when he was about to taste the dish that already served, one of his grunt called him once again.

"BOSS!" It was the Wolfman this time.

"Tsk!" The boss clicked his tongue and shouted at him. "What the hell do you want!? You won't get your turn if you don't shut your goddamn mouth!"

"L-look be-behind you…" The Wolfman said as he pointed at the forest.

The boss then turned his gaze toward where the Wolfman pointed at.

Two meters tall humanoid silhouette was walking slowly toward them. As the shadow was getting closer, their figure was slowly being revealed.

Black armor was covered their slender body, and one thing was noticeable and very unique from the armor. There were white ribs on the chest part.

On their right hand, they were holding one meter black sword similar to a needle, or perhaps one could call it a rapier.

However, what was making the player killer party terrified was the face under the black hood.

The figure was faceless. Pale white faceless face.

Surprised, the player killer's boss stood while fixing his pants. He immediately unsheathed his sword and readied his shield.

"I-Is that a monster?" The Sleethar voice sounded terrified, yet she was trying to keep herself calm. "I-It's not a ghost, right? A-a field boss perhaps?"

"No way, we could be stepping into a jackpot." Said the Robed Elf with an excited tone.

"All right then, let's try to attack!" Said the Wolfman while grinning. His body was already twitching for a fight.

"Wait a minute, what if it's a strong monster?" Said the light armored human.

"Are you scared? Come on, don't be a sissy. This area is for weaklings. There's no way a strong monster appeared here." Said the Wolfman, prideful to his own combat ability.

"Call me whatever you want. I'll run if we lose."

"Wow, look at him guys. I can't believe you hired him boss." The Wolfman mocked his cowardice with taunting face.

"Shut up! I just have a bad feeling about this…"

"Well… If you don't wanna help, you better ready for punishment." The leader finally opened his mouth to his lackeys. Everyone immediately went silent while looking at each other. "Anyone else wanna run?"

The leader held the situation calmly. His words were strong and showed that he was truly a prideful leader. And, of course, they respected him for his combat as well. He was the most powerful among them after all.

"Reibert, you go first!" Said the leader while looking sharply at light-armored human.

The newbie gulped his own saliva. He didn't have a choice but fulfil his boss' order. He charged sloppily and thrusting his sword toward the faceless being.

Stab!

The sword was piercing through the phantom's gut. Achieved what he ordered, he was laughing in joy.

"Hehahaha… I did-"

Your damage has been nullified.

Curse of Weakness's effect can be felt.

"Eeeeekkk!"

His words were suddenly cut and he squeaked as he saw the system messages.

Perhaps his damage was too low for the phantom's defense or they had a special skill to block or nullify his attack.

The phantom's faceless expression was looking at him. Though they had no eyes, he felt as if the phantom was staring straight into his eyes.

It was then he realized he couldn't pull his sword no matter how hard he put his strength into his arms, it was inevitable. His strength was gone all of sudden.

What was left was his shaking hands and legs. The other members were confused by his behavior.

"What the hell are you doing!?" The boss shouted at him.

"N-No d-damage…"

'R-ridiculous! This damn weakling.' The leader thought while shook his head in disappointment. He was then turning his gaze toward the Wolfman and Sleethar. "You two! Go! Attack!"

The two immediately ran forward after the boss commanded them.

The Sleethar was a rogue, her attack was fast and precise. Using her dagger, she blinked behind the phantom in a second and landed multiple back stabs.

The Wolfman didn't want to lose to her. Readied his claw gauntlets, he ran straight and thrust his claws to the phantom's shoulders.

Your damage has been nullified.

Curse of Weakness's effect can be felt.

Their expressions were dim after seeing the system messages.

"B-Boss… My damage is nullified!"

"S-Should we run?" The Sleethar began to be scared for real. Her attacks started to become dull.

The phantom raised their sword as they looked at the Wolfman. He squeaked and raised his hands, trying to parry their attack. The phantom swung his sword toward the Wolfman.

Swoosh… BOOM!

A ball of fire hit the phantom and the attack was stopped.

You have inflicted 47 damage to ???

"I deal some damage!" The robed Elf smiled.

The Wolfman sighed in relieve.

"Good!" The boss was pleased. "Reibert, Erline, Garan! Hold him! Use magic to damage him! And Noxar, keep hitting him with your spells."

With that command, the party killer began their attacks.

Ball of fires kept bombarding the phantom. An intense fight could be seen between the party and the phantom.

As if experienced dealing Raid Bosses, they were handling the phantom professionally. They didn't let the phantom's guard down by attacking respectively.

Their weapon clashed multiple times.

Clank! Clank! Clank!

The phantom was poorly parrying the attacks, and also counter attacked randomly.

If one witnessed this fight, they would think that it was one-sided battle with the party as a victor.

However, one could see all their expression clearly if they had keen eyes. The one who seemed like tasting bitter drink was not the phantom, it was the party.

The phantom looked like playing with them and waiting for something. And the waiting was over when, suddenly, the high pitched voice was heard again.

"What the fuck?"

"His HP is healed!?!"

They panicked and stopped attacking.

"Keep attacking you idiots!"

Hearing their boss yelling at them, they didn't have a choice but kept attacking again. However, they had no damage at all.

"D-Don't be scared you dumbass! Keep holding! And use magic!"

The leader of the PK party still had a pride to order his underlings. He was absolutely dependable for a leader.

Perhaps, his experience for commanding his party fighting and killing multiple monsters or even players had been moving his thought into making a fast decision. He tried to raise their morale.

"Noxar!" The boss looked at the Elf.

The Robed Elf called Noxar nodded and began to channel his spell. A ball of fire was formed in front of him, then it was shot in an arc toward the faceless being.

FWOOOOSH! BOOM!

Your damage has been nullified.

The phantom was standing still.

"Eeek! My magic doesn't work!"

"Wh-what!?"

Physical or Magical, their attacks were totally nullified. Everyone was terrified.

The high pitched voice beautifully echoed throughout the outskirt, and the mist getting a bit thicker.

The faceless being was slowly walking toward the boss. As if they were enchanted by the phantom's presence, they were scared they couldn't move an inch.

The boss gripped his sword tightly while his hands and legs were trembled. His eyes widened and shaking.

When the faceless being was in front of him, he began to scream and thrust his sword multiple times.

"Huuuuuaaaaaaaarrrgggghhh!!"

Stab! Stab! Stab! Stab! Stab!

Your damage has been nullified.

Your damage has been nullified.

Curse of Weakness's effect can be felt.

Your damage has been nullified.

Curse of Weakness's effect can be felt.

Your damage has been nullified.

Your damage has been nullified.

Curse of Weakness's effect can be felt.

The boss panicked and his attacks became uncontrollable. It was the first time he was scared. It was the first time he felt weak and useless.

The phantom stretched their left hand. They choked the boss and his attack immediately stopped. He grabbed the phantom's hand instead, trying to loosen the phantom's grip.

However, the phantom's hand was immovable, it was hard as steel.

"REIBERT! ERLINE! GARAN! NOXAR!" The boss shouted at his underlings "HELP ME YOU BASTARD!"

They were silent and didn't know what to do since they couldn't deal any damage to the phantom. Seeing that, the boss got angrier.

"YOU PIECE OF SHIT! HELP ME YOU TRASH! DON'T JUST FUCKING SILENT! DO FUCKING SOMETHING!"

The phantom then pointing the sword at his crotch.

"NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! FUCK YOUUUU! YOU'RE INSANE!! YOU'RE FUCKING INSANE!!!!"

Stab…

The phantom, slowly, stabbed his crotch.

"GUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGHHHH YOU DAMN MONSTER! I'LL KILL YOU! I WILL KILL YOU!"

He couldn't struggle but scream. If he struggle, the pain would be more intense.

Slowly, the phantom pushed the sword deeper, an inch by an inch. Blood was coming out from his crotch, dripping down on the ground.

Then the phantom shook the sword, slowly.

"FUCKTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARDDD!! HELP ME YOU FUCKEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!"

The boss voice cracked each time he screamed. No matter how much his lackeys wanted to help, they couldn't move. They were too scared to move. Running away was an option, but their pride was holding them on the spot.

Eventually, the sword went through between his butt cheeks. The phantom instantly pulled the sword and pushed him on the ground.

The boss couldn't scream anymore, he just curled and put his hands on his crotch while ground his teeth. But then, the phantom stabbed him again…slowly.

Stab… Stab… Stab…

The phantom stabbed him on the parts where there were no armor covered his body.

The pain was too much so the boss just shook his head and body as if he had a seizure, and blood was coming out from his mouth.

However, it was not enough, the phantom pointed their sword at his eye.

Stab…

Blood coming out from his pupil and his eye was bursting as the sword buried deeply in his eye socket.

The phantom slowly pulled and pushed the sword through his eye socket. He pulled the sword and did the same thing on his other eye. This time, the phantom did it faster.

Stab! Stab! Stab! Stab! Stab!

Blood gushing out from his eye socket and painted his face red. The phantom shook his head and shoulders.

The gesture showed that as if the phantom was laughing and enjoying what they had done. However, no voice could be heard while their head were twitching.

The phantom suddenly stopped. And then they put their right foot on his knee. After a long silence, they kicked his knee multiple times.

Snap!

His knee bent to the other way. Not enough, the phantom stepped and kicked him until his bones were cracked and broken.

The fractures became more visible when his limbs had multiple bends. Even some of his bones were coming out.

At that point, the boss' consciousness was faded. Still, the phantom didn't stop and kept kicking him.

His blood drenched on the ground, making a crimson pool under his body. It was so grotesque the people who were there couldn't even look at the scenery after them.

When his HP dropped to critical condition, the phantom stopped. Their gaze turned at the other members.

Gasp!

All of them gasped and gulped their own saliva. They looked at each other and nodded, they had the same exact thought. They turned around in unison and ran away.

They showed their back to the phantom.

And that was their biggest mistake. The phantom pursued and, in an instant, they were already behind them.

Slash!

In one swung, the phantom slashed everyone's back. They were all immediately stopped and staggered in pain.

Then the phantom thrust their sword right on the back of their knees.

Stab!

"Aaaaaaaaccckkk!"

Stab!

"Aaaaaarrgghhh!"

Stab!

"Eeeeekkk"

They screamed and fell one by one. Even on the ground, they were still trying to crawl away or counter attack.

However, it was futile. As they were trembled in fear, the phantom was slowly walking toward them.

Thus, at that very moment, they finally knew… It was one-sided slaughter from the start.

The phantom was slowly torturing them, one by one.

・・・

Almost an hour had passed.

Unpleasant sight of all five members of the player killer party was on the ground. The phantom let them there with low HP.

Then the phantom slowly turned their gaze toward where the kidnapped people were tied. Seeing that, they were all scared. As the phantom began to walk toward them, they closed their eyes tightly.

However, nothing had done to them. When they opened their eyes, the rope was untied. It was cut by the phantom.

They were all dumbfounded, for the merciless phantom was helping them. It was a miracle. Then the phantom was walking back to the forest and vanished within the mist.

"We are saved!"

"Thank God for sending us a savior!"

They were crying and delighted. They helped each other and immediately going back to Orbania.

The story was spread among NPCs. And it was just a start, a prologue, a beginning of ghost story that was slowly known widely in Heallance.

The myth of a vigilante named Faceless Phantom.

・・・

Ghaldaran Empire

It was a quiet night. A man rushed into the throne's room and then bent his knees toward the king.

"A hero requests an audience, Your Majesty. It is a matter of urgency."

The King raised his hand, it was a sign to let the person in. Two guards then opened the massive throne room's double door.

A gray-robed human with pointy hat was standing behind the door. As the doors were wide open, he was then walking toward the throne. He stopped and bowed.

"Ice Magician Aradun, at your humble service, Your Majesty."

"It is a surprise…for the famous Ice Magician Aradun to come here during the night. So, what is the urgent matter?"

"I am terribly sorry for intruding your night, Your Majesty. I found something peculiar from a quest I had completed."

Aradun took out two things from inside his bag and put them down. They were shown to everyone in the room, and everyone's eyes were wide open.

They were one head of wide-jawed black-scaled lizard, and one head of bald dark-skinned human-like being with short pointy ears.

The lizard had yellow eyes, sharp teeth and fangs. The human was gray-bearded male with two different eye colors. One yellow, and the other was red. On his head, there was a strange marking like a rune or some sort.

"It cannot be…"

"The history is true."

The royal court began to be noisy. Some nobles murmured and panicked. The King, however, kept his calm and asked Aradun.

"Where did you find them?"

"Northeast of Crystal Crater, Your Majesty. There is a steep path between Kovelack Mountain Range. I fought this unknown beast that was lurking there. It was tamed, and this man controlled the beast."

Hearing his explanation, they began to praise Aradun.

"Great discovery. They must be coming from the northern land."

"The land is unexplored indeed."

"What a brave of you to step your feet on a dangerous land."

"Your action is admirable. And this problem needs to be solved as soon as possible."

"Indeed. We need to inform this matter to the other kingdoms, Your Majesty."

"Tell this matter to the Alkronia Empress? Pfth… She will rob our resource and claiming the land as hers."

"I do not look down toward our soldiers, but the Dark Army is far more superior than you expected."

"Indeed, Your Majesty. Our power alone cannot penetrate this powerful army. Even if we hired the heroes. We also need the other kingdom's help."

"No, the history is just exaggerating their power. Our battalion is definitely more powerful than those pesky fairy tales."

However, as expected, the nobles began to have different opinions. The King had seen this scene multiple times. He kept silent and thinking. A moment later someone entered the throne room.

"Your Majesty, Alkronia Empire's Envoy requests an audience."

Everyone immediately went silent. After thinking for a moment, the King raised his hand and the throne's massive double door was opened once again.

A beautiful, voluptuous woman was standing behind the door. She was wearing a thick white robe yet her body's curves were still visible in plain sight. She began to walk when the door fully opened.

All the eyes were focusing on her swaying hips and wiggling bountiful assets. Her cheeky smile showed that she enjoyed that she was being looked at. She stopped beside Aradun and began to speak toward the King.

"Vanea Grace Malavuur, at your humble service…"

Her manner of bowing was elegant, yet the King was not pleased at all.

"Has Alkronia been mad…to send their third princess to be their envoy?"

"It is an honor to be recognized by the King of Ghaldaran. We have been in peace treaty for hundreds of years, Your Majesty. There is no reason to be hostile towards each other. Furthermore, it is necessary to gain trust between our kingdoms. For this dire moment, we –Alkronia Empire– will offer our power to banish the Dark Army from our land."

"So, Alkronia has been informed with this matter as well."

"Indeed, Your Majesty. I am certain that they are already on the move for who knows how long. We need to prepare for the upcoming war. We have to join force, or it will be the end of our kingdoms."

A noble hammered his fist on the table after hearing her words.

"Your Majesty, this is obviously a trap! Those things are no more than just a fairy tale. Or perhaps, they are the ones who make these abominations. Alkronia is tricky as always."

"Calm yourself, Falter. Of course we need to be cautious." Another noble tried to calm him down. "As a matter of fact, if the Dark Army is indeed true. Ghaldaran and Alkronia will be perished first since our kingdoms are on the front line. We cannot count on the Elf, Beast, or even Fishmen. We humans cannot fight each other when there is a powerful foreign army trying to flatten our kingdoms."

"Alkronia is indeed a foreign army who is trying to flatten our kingdom. With or without peace treaty. They are greedy bastards."

"Watch your mouth!"

Yet the nobles kept arguing. The King could only closed his eyes and sighed. It was a shameless behavior to be shown to the third princess of Alkronia. Nonetheless, the King had already decided about what he would do for his kingdom.

"I accepted your offer." Everyone went silent as the King said those words. "We need to fight this Dark Army together."

Princess Vanea smiled at the King's choice.

"A wise decision, Your Majesty. Our alliance will shatter no more, for the Dark Army shall be banished from our land."

With those words, multiple messages were bombarding Aradun's system window.

・・・

A man was sitting in lotus position. The wind blew through the forest surrounding him, making a peaceful song that soothing heart and calming mind.

Suddenly, someone appeared. And he was walking toward him. He stopped five meters in front of him and opened his mouth.

"How's your Qi training?"

"It's great. My Qi has raised steadily."

"Liúxīng… Join us… And we will definitely support your Cultivation progress."

"I don't need anyone to carve my own path of Cultivation."

"You have talent yet you choose to be a loose cultivator. It is a waste."

Liúxīng kept his position yet he twitched his eyebrow. His meditation had been already ruined by the man's presence.

"I can't do this role play anymore. Please go away…"

"Alright. But seriously, though. Let's beat the Main Scenario together, Liúxīng. Join my guild!"

"No."

"Why? We are always a team in every games we played!"

"That's why I want to be Solo."

"Your talent will be a waste no more if you join Skythrone Sect! Accept my offer!"

"NO! Stop roleplaying! GO AWAY!"

"Together, we shall slay the gods and claim the heavens!"

"Shut up! I'm meditating!"

Their verbal fight wouldn't end anytime soon. It lasted until one of them left or logged out.

・・・

Northeast part of Orbania.

"So… How should I call you?" Vallas asked and scratched his head.

"You can call me by THAT name." Said the robed man while packing things inside his bag.

"Nel'Thas?"

"Yeah."

Hearing the name, Ylvaark's eyes widened.

"It cannot be… You are Nel'Thas the Magnificent?"

The man never showed his face so Ylvaark didn't know that under the hood was an Elf. And the Elf called Nel'Thas was known all over Heallance.

He was a famous heroic figure who fought the Dark Army in the past. He represented magic as beautiful and elegant, dazzling either allies or enemies with powerful spells.

He was Nel'Thas the Magnificent.

"Well, you could say th-"

"Sssshhhh…" Nel'Thas immediately shushed Vallas.

"What?"

"I told you. Shut. Up." Nel'Thas whispered in angry tone.

They were silent for a moment. Then Nel'Thas opened his mouth in still whispering voice.

"By Lady Evania! They're already here!"

"Who?" Vallas asked.

"Nightalons…" He replied.

Hearing the name, Vallas and Ylvaark gulped their own saliva in unison.

"Their assassins are here." Nel'Thas' eyes jumped from left to right as if he was reading something. "There are ten of them nearby."

Tsk!

He clicked his tongue and ground his teeth.

"This town is not safe anymore." He said as he looked at Vallas. "Don't do anything stupid. Clear?"

Vallas raised his eyebrows, closed his eyes, and sighed. He nodded.

"Crystal."

"Alright. Let's leave the town pronto."

And so, the three of them stealthily left Orbania.

・・・

"Kunh por niz thazafandum?"

"Noh ronartak sukovul luzan abantaruk. Gurzu ronar luzan hofanar."

(So their scouts have been eliminated. They've been exposed then.)

"Fa. In vaath… Ronar lag tavaan thavar zel. Gurzu rofa nalnak lag uldak buvanor."

(Yes. And soon… They will release the first wave. Then our plan will be done accordingly.)

"Gaz. Tara ronartum fazoth."

(Good. Let them fight.)
