《Torn World》Side Story #1

Nathan walks outside to run around the house a little bit to train his cardio. He saw Joey and Tanner doing it, so why not try it? He decides not to use "Accelerated Step" and just run as fast as possible. He gets into a position he had seen an Olympic sprinter on TV do, and pushes off as fast as possible, which he starts to go at an insane speed. It's nothing compared to "Accelerated Step", but he is definitely running faster than humanly possible. As he takes the first turn, he takes the turn too hard and flips due to the Law of Inertia. As he goes flying through the air, he saves himself by doing a one-handed handspring, followed a quick backflip to slow himself down. He easily lands on his feet. He is amazed at what he had just done because he had never been barely able to do a cartwheel, let alone a handspring followed by a backflip. Maybe he should try this more often so he can use it effectively.

Bree was inside, in the kitchen, cleaning the dishes that were left over from last night's dinner. Joey had said he was going to do them, but he wasn't awake yet so Bree decided to do it for him. As she was washing the dishes, she had a thought come into her mind, "What if I just used water magic?". She takes the dishes out of the water basin and set them on the table. She concentrates her magic into a massive "Water Spear", and she slowly sets it down on the plates. She uses her magic to scrub down the plates with the water and puts the plates in the water basin while her "Water Spear" drains down the drain. There was still dust all over the house because everyone was too lazy to clean it, so Bree decides to use her magic to help out. Bree summons a "Water Spear", and uses it to collect the dust all over the house. She finishes the first floor and proceeds to the next floor. She was cleaning the hallway with all of the bedrooms when suddenly Joey jumps out of the door and yells as loud as he can. This was to scare Bree, and he did it too well. As soon as Bree sees him, she starts screaming and gets scared, but this caused the "Water Spear" to expand greatly. Within 5 seconds, the whole first floor of the house was flooded. When she realizes she did this, she immediately sits down and puts her knees to her chest and starts crying.

After being soaked with water, and getting a massive lecture from Bree, Joey decides it would be the best to leave the house for a bit. He figures that now would be a nice time to train and find out how to use some of his abilities. He goes to the bottom of the hill they live on, and he finds a lake with a small forest surrounding it. Joey thinks that he would be able to use his abilities on the trees, and it will also train his strength, so he goes to the small forest. The first ability he tries to use is "Lure". He thinks about the word over and over, and activates the power inside of him, then suddenly a teal aura appears around him. He stands there for a second and just looks at this aura. As he is looking, he can feel something tap his foot. He looks down to see a black snake is attached to his plate boots. He freaks out and shakes his leg. He shakes it so hard that the snake goes flying out into the distance towards the direction of the town.
"That's weird, why is it being so aggressive?"
He could feel something attach on to his back and crawl up his plate armor. He grabs it immediately and looks to see a squirrel trying to eat his hand. Oh, that makes sense now, "Lure" is an ability that lures enemies to attack me, he thought. He turns off Lure and the squirrel tries to run away from Joey, so he lets it go. He thinks this can be useful, so he will definitely train it more, but for now, it is time to try out the other abilities.

Tanner had gotten up extremely early that morning so he could get to use the carriage before anyone else tried. He left at sunrise and headed straight towards the guild building. Tanner had become extremely good at driving the carriage, so he made it there pretty fast. As he arrived, he saw Livian walking in so he yelled her name.

"Hey, Livian!"
Livian was mumbling to herself and wasn't paying attention, so she was slightly startled. She stops and looks at Tanner and smiles.
"Hello Haku, what can I help you with?"
Tanner followed Livian inside while explaining what he wanted. He wanted to get some materials that he could use to build things with. He wanted this so he could try out his "Master Craftsman" ability. Livian led Tanner to the counter and handed him a book.
"Actually, here is a book that explains how to use that ability and what you can do with it. As for the supplies, you can order them from the guild and have them sent to your home."
"Oh thanks Livian, how much do I owe you for the book?"
Tanner holds out his coin pouch, but Livian shakes her head and hands him back the pouch.
"How about this, you just owe me a small favor when I need it, ok?"
Tanner nods his head as to agree with her terms. He decided not to buy anything yet, and read the book first. He goes out to the carriage and begins to read the book.

How would you handle waking up to a new world that till now you thought could only happen in VR games? Well our MC is about to find out. Hello! I have always wanted to write though never got around to it, now with all the extra time, I find myself with I have decided to finally pursue it. I would appreciate critiques and advice anyone can offer to help me be better at it. Thank you in advance!
8 89The Core of a Factory
An abandoned steampunk arms factory, in the middle of a conflict torn former state of the Empire it served, gains a soul. This transforms it into a Lord, capable of turning land into power. Beset by enemies on all sides it must figure out how to win the war its creators lost a century ago. This is a progressive Dungeon Core novel (which is to say the core will progress and expand in scale, eventually) across multiple dimensions with different characteristics (e.g. steampunk, magic, mythological). It has rationalist leanings (paragraphs of reasoning) and litrpg leanings (there are stat blocks). The core game mechanical idea is something like "what if different flavors of magic power actually did come from controlling land" and then the story is: "what if there was a flavorless (artifact deck) dungeon core". Chapters will be relatively short (my aim is that in three column format each would fit on a wide screen monitor), the first few chapters - setting up the main character and mechanics - are currently the longest in the entire series. I write chapters in blocks, and then release them one a weekday (M-F; 6 PM GMT, unless RoyalRoad's publish thing screws up) until I run out. There may be a few days of gaps here and there if someone finds an egregious error I have to re-write around or if I am behind. In general though one can read this once a weekend. I may do slight retconns and edits, I'll make sure to put it in an authors note if I do.
