《Man from the machine》Chapter 6.4 : Slow Progress

Summer, age 8.
``Remember to focus on your breathing while you imprint the crystals Nathan. I know it's hard, but you have to master it.'' [Alfred]
``I know Alfred, I will work on it.'' [Nathan]
``Please do. Say, there was something you wanted to try out right? You had a new magic you wanted to try to imbue?'' [Alfred]
I'm sitting in Alfred's shop, making the usual heating crystals that glow when they are low on power. Good practice. Very boring.
``Yes. My mom showed me a magic where you produce a sound, I wanted to see how it works with a crystal.'' [Nathan]
``The ``Whistle'' spell, or the ``Air Speaker'' spell?'' [Alfred]
``It is the ``Whistle'' spell, how does the ``Air Speaker'' spell work?'' [Nathan]
``Like ventriloquism. You talk and the sound comes out somewhere else. Pretty useful.'' [Alfred]
``I will ask her to show me then.'' [Nathan]
``But you wanted to try the ``Whistle'' spell. We have a few crystals in the shop, but I really need to go buy some more.'' [Alfred]
``If you want I can look after the shop. I need to practice paying attention while imbuing either way.'' [Nathan]
``Hmm.. How good is your counting?'' [Alfred]
``If you mean my math, I can do it just fine.'' [Nathan]
``Fair enough. I'll be back in a say few hours, please do your best with your practice.'' [Alfred]
He gets up, gathers his things, and walks out the door.
``Alright then, time to get to work.'' [Nathan]
I sit down, facing the door, ready to begin.
I channel my aura, and put my hands on the crystal, ready to imprint the crystal with the spell.
The imprinting itself is easy, not exactly a difficult spell. But I want to see what I can do with this.
Ideally, I want to make a speaker of some sort. Now, the image that appears in my mind when I channel the spell into the crystal has something that looks like a graph and a curve of some sort. But it has no scales..

If I manipulate this, it should change the frequency... I can change the amplitude too.
Can I add another curve? There, that does it. I'll try adding two frequencies next to each other, see if I can get a beats signal going.
I finish the crystal, and ease out of the trance.
``Are you finished?'' [Emelia]
``Oh. Emelia, I did not see you.'' [Nathan]
``Of course you didn't you were busy.'' [Emelia]
``Well, yeah, but I was supposed to practice paying attention while I imprint..'' [Nathan]
``Haha, you failed then.'' [Emelia]
She giggles
``Hey, have you seen my dad?'' [Emelia]
``Yeah, he went to get some more crystals.'' [Nathan]
``When is he coming back? I wanted to take a walk around the village, but he has to be there to help me back when I can't walk anymore.'' [Emelia]
``Your health has improved a lot though, I remember when I first saw you and you couldn't even get out of bed.'' [Nathan]
``Yes, Doctor Shale really helped me a lot.. But I can still only really walk for a quarter of an hour before I need to relax.'' [Emelia]
``Actually, I might have a solution for that. I had Graham make something that you can sit in while your dad pulls you around.'' [Nathan]
``What?! How does it work?!'' [Emelia]
She said with stunned expression of disbelief.
``Uhm, it is just a wheelchair. You know, a chair with wheels so it can be pulled.'' [Nathan]
``I've never heard of that! That's amazing!'' [Emelia]
``It's nothing much.'' [Nathan]
``No it is!'' [Emelia]
``Well he should have it done in a few days. If you want, I can pull you around the village while your father is working.'' [Nathan]
``That would be great!'' [Emelia]
She's jumping around in joy, clapping her hands and smiling like I have never seen before. Her long amber hair swirling around.
It's really quite lovely.

It actually cost me a fair bit of BUCs, like the guitar. Graham gave me a good deal, but it was still quite expensive, and I spent a lot of the money I made from creating the glowing heat crystals for Alfred.
But as long as I can see her smile like this, it's worth it..
``I have to go back to bed, but thank you so much Nathan!'' [Emelia]
``You don't have to go if you don't want to though.'' [Nathan]
``What do you mean?'' [Emelia]
``Well, uhm, if you want to, you can just sit here. I don't mind.'' [Nathan]
``Won't I interrupt you?'' [Emelia]
``Well I'm supposed to pay attention while I'm imprinting, so perhaps you can help me with that. And if I lose focus, you can help pull me out of it.'' [Nathan]
``Sure! If you think I can help.'' [Emelia]
She says with a smile, as she sits down on the other side of the counter.
I realign myself in the seat, and get ready to work.
As I channel my aura into the crystal, I make sure to pay attention to Emelia.
She's resting her chin on her right hand, looking into my eyes. Her emerald eyes shining gently in the light from the window.
Her nose isn't very big. It's narrow, sharp, and with a straight edge shape.
Her chin is neither sharp nor soft, but her cheekbone sticks out slightly. Her hair flows down in front of her face, partly covering one of her eyes, showing slight glimmers of the same emerald green that shines in her eyes.
And her smile is enchanting. Her tiny lips parted, showing the white of her teeth, her eyes open wide and filled with joy.
She's never looked this happy before.
She's stunning.
The clothes she's wearing are linen, a long white gown.
She never goes outside, so I guess there's little problem in giving her a white dress.
It's sleeveless, allowing her frail arms to move freely, showing her shoulder and collarbones.
The V-neck showing the hint of a cleavage, peaking out as she leans forwa-
She snaps her fingers in front of my face, and I lean back with a jolt.
``You're losing focus Nathan, your eyes were sliding down. You're supposed to pay attention while you're imprinting.'' [Emelia]
``Ah.. Ye-yeah..'' [Nathan]
``Good! Now try again.'' [Emelia]
She says, merrily.
``Uhm, sure.'' [Nathan]
I try again, this time with a clear blush on my face.
I've never looked at her like this.
She has an amused look on her face, clearly finding my ordeal funny.
She shifted the way she's sitting.
She's leaning back now instead of resting her chin on her hand. She flicks her head to move the hair from her face.
Her arms are crossed, slightly pushing her bust up. Luckily, she's leaning back this time..
She twitches her nose.. She has this slightly crooked smile on, and every now and again, her nose twitches.
As she looks around, her hair keeps getting in her eyes, so she keeps flicking her head to remove it.
She finally moves it to a side, playing with the tips as she looks down. She seems to have forgotten that she's supposed to help me stay in focus.
Guess I'm not the only one that gets distracted.
Remembering what she was supposed to do, she looks up at me again, locking eyes with me.
And smile.
God she's beautiful..
``How is it going? Are you making progress?'' [Emelia]
Ah.
I slowly nod my head.
``Good, let me know when you're done.'' [Emelia]
I should really start working..
Slowly, I start imagining the diagram, taking frequent breaks to pay attention to Emelia, waving my hand every now and again, looking at her play with her hair..

Cycles of Ruin
Civilizations rise and fall. Kith build them up and monsters, led by powerful dungeon keepers, bring them to ruin. For three thousand years the cycle has been maintained by the Guild of Chaos and its endless hordes of minions who—in absence of their long lost creators—have taken it upon themselves to keep the realms of the universe in balance. The Guild has grown efficient at this task, but some among its ranks have begun to ponder the utility of a universe that has been robbed of the very possibility of change. Basil von Doom is one such dungeon keeper working for the Guild, leading an army of loyal minions from one conquest to the next; burning civilizations and sifting through the ruins in search of forbidden knowledge that the races of kith were never meant to possess. But having spent more than half a century in pursuit of glory and fame—trying to live up to the legacy of his father—Basil has grown indifferent towards his work. Desperate for a worthy challenge, but bound by his duties as a dungeon keeper, he has turned his mind towards uncovering the ultimate fate of the previous master of his house and the secrets that were buried with him. Now the young Master of House Doom must balance his growing interest in pursuing the trail of his father with the responsibilities that come with running a dungeon in service to the Guild of Chaos. To remain in good standing with the Guild, Basil has even accepted the task of mentoring an apprentice dungeon keeper, a young succubus named Elnora. It is at the tail end of her apprenticeship that the story begins; with a civilization poised to fall—its greatest heroes gathering for one last assault on the heart of darkness—and Basil striking up a conversation with his apprentice that will set into motion the unraveling of the universe. ***This is a rewrite and continuation of my story that was first posted on RoyalRoad a few years ago.
