《Try Me!》Chapter 36: Old Wizard’s Thoughts

It’s been almost two months since I woke up. And this kid has been giving me nothing but surprises since then.
First the fact that he managed to survive in this godforsaken place. Then the fact that he managed to finish my dice game. Then he managed to execute my technique with his first try and awoken me. those are all very big surprises.
But even then, till now he is keep giving me more surprises. This is bad for my heart. Even though I don’t have a heart anymore.
His body potential and talent for martial art is atrocious like I was back when I was alive. But his control over everything about himself is little bit of frightening for a nine years old child.
But those are not what I find most disturbing about this child. What’s most disturbing is his temperament like the tree said and his willpower.
Way too mature for a nine years old child. And even if I ignore that his indifference to almost everything is most concerning. And way he trains is kind of scary too. Not everyone can tear their brain cells to train faster even if they knew that it will heal.
But this kid just keeps doing that. Pushing his brain cells to their limit and tearing them apart then his monstrous vitality heals them back. This kind of self-torturing training is not something someone without iron like willpower can do.
Even though he was born to become a wizard he still trains in martial art. And since my Nameless martial art doesn’t demand much from body potential and martial art talent but only demands practitioner to have above average energy control it is actually tailor made for the kid. And his progress is kind of starting to scare me.
And when he starts to do something he was born to do it is even more scary. First, he showed me his sparrows. Making your mana take shape like that is something only SS rank wizards can do. But this kid does it like flipping his hands around.

Then next he does something even ridiculous. He makes his mana take a shape of a wolf then starts to teach it how to fight.
At first, I was blown away by his wolf but as I observed what he was trying to do I thought he was kid after all. You can’t just simply give something made out of mana sentience. Unless you rip someone’s soul and put that soul inside it.
But after a while I was blown away once again. As he made me conjure up a real wolf and creatures to fight the wolf and observed their fight with apt attention I thought what’s the use. But after a while he started to make his own wolf fight the creatures I conjured up with my formation.
Then watching for a while my jaws dropped and it took me a while to realize that. His wolf started to imitate the real wolf’s actions. Fighting and reacting like a real wolf would.
And this implies that he managed to create a sentient mana construct. This is scary. If his mana reserve gets big enough he can conjure up a whole army if he wants to. One-man army. That is something scary.
Even though I tried I simply couldn’t hold my curiosity back and asked him.
“Alder how did you make your wolf sentient enough to follow your command and fight?”
“I actually quite simple. I simply wrote an AI for my wolf.”
“What is an AI?”
“AI abbreviation for Artificial Intelligence. Meaning fabricated mind.”
“So, you mean to say that you managed to program an independent mind?”
“Well, I suppose that is it. But calling my wolf’s combat AI independent mind would be over exaggeration. All it is doing is reacting to situation according to circumstances. And action to take during certain circumstances are recorded from real wolf you showed me. So, fundamentally it is just set of protocols my mana wolf will follow according to situation.”
“Then where do you write your program to make your wolf follow its protocols?”

“I add it on my wolf’s spell matrix.”
“What are you talking about. I didn’t see you use spell matrix to conjure up your wolf. You simply shaped it from your mana, didn’t you?”
“First few times were indeed me willing my mana to take shape. But after a few try my second door created a spell matrix for my wolf. And as I write my AI code in that spell matrix my wolf follows that code and takes its actions according to circumstances.”
“I heard you two talking about “your door”. What exactly is “your door”?”
“I don’t think I trust you enough to tell you that.”
“So, you trust enough the tree to tell it your secret?”
“Hell no, he figured out even before I did.”
Tree: “See that puny wizard. See my brilliance.”
Alder: “You’re being way too narcissistic for a tree. Stop it.”
Tree: “Screw you. I can be whatever I want to be.”
Alder: “TSK.”
Arcturus: “Anyway, thanks for telling me about your AI.”
Alder: “Okay.”
If only he knew what he implied by that. Anyway, more I get to know about this kid more I get surprised and little bit scared.
But, maybe because I don’t have body anymore I don’t feel as many emotions I feel when I was human. Isolation and unknown no longer scare me and all I got is logic in my head. And from my observation, this kid is way too indifferent to everything to bring forth an apocalypse.
But still this kid scares me a little bit. Especially when he fought that giant bat. Even when all his bones were broken he didn’t make peep. Just clenched his teeth waited for it to heal. After killing the bat, he did something even scary. He decided to keep that dragon egg.
No sane person would do that. And his reason is even more ridiculous. He thinks “Dragons are cool”. Thus, he wants to hatch one from its egg.
But after all that surprises and scares, I think I still like this kid.
“So, what do you think this kid really is?”
“Well, I’m pretty sure this one is human.”
“No, not his species. But he himself as a person. I’ve never seen a kid like him before. All his talents and skills aside his temperament and personality are way too logical and indifferent. I’ve never seen that even in adult let alone a nine years old child. No matter how indifferent they may appear they have some kind of view or at least emotion about something. But this kid just keeps going forward. Like nothing will faze him.”
“Who cares. I’m simply waiting for this little one to show me something interesting. Whether that is good, evil or nothing at all doesn’t matter to me. Because I know one thing this kid will show me something interesting. So, I will keep watching him.”
“I was wrong. Apparently, he is not the only indifferent one. But you do realize his potential for destruction should he decide to go down that path right. From all he did till now I can say he can be a one-man army by himself. And that scares me.”
“Why do you care so much about the living anyway. You’re dead already. And his indifference comes from his carefree attitude. Only thought in his mind is gaining strength. Nothing more. He won’t cause unnecessary destruction for his mind is too logical. But that doesn’t mean he will be force for good for he is way too indifferent to things that doesn’t concern him. Remember this, he won’t do anything unnecessary unless give reason to.”
“Well, that’s reassuring.”
“I know that’s sarcasm, you know?”
“Good you can tell.”
Then let’s hope tree is right.
Alder: “Arc I did it!”
I look and there he is with my original spell. Eyeball floating next to him.
Arcturus: “Really? Only three hours? I’m too dead for this crap.”

Around a distant moon a deep space miner stumbles onto a secret, the key to which lies buried inside his own tortured mind. After the Long Burn is an anthology of short science fiction stories set in the distant Ionad System. Author's Note: I thought I might try something a little different with this story. Rather than one story, it is six stories of varying length, each taking a slightly different perspective to tell a larger story. Some are more actioney, others more cerebral but I hope there will be something for everyone. Stories over 7000 words, with the exception of the titular After the Long Burn, will be published in two parts. I anticipate an upload schedule of one part every other day.
