《Try Me!》Chapter 1: Consciousness

Sudden clarity like awakening from a sedative induced sleep. How do I what that is. Doesn't matter first of all I need to know who and where I am. I thought I didn't open my eyes apparently, I did, it's just too dark to see. But it seems my eyes are adapting to darkness.
I see silhouettes of waving leaves and hear a whistling wind. It seems I'm in a forest. Again, how do I know that. And I'm most surprised by the fact how I couldn't care less about that. Huh strange. Well whatever first let's try assessing the surroundings. Huh apparently it is harder to stand up than I thought. Heh no wonder it will be hard to stand up on those stumpy legs.
Why does...…
Awooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy shit that almost scared the crap out of me, literally. Whew that was close. Anyway, what was that, sounds like wolf's howl but deeper. Again, how do I know that. Forget that first need to hide before I become a wolfs stool. Now where to hide. I try looking around my surroundings and see a giant tree with what seems to be a space beneath it. I try to walk to it.
Apparently, it is even harder to walk with these stumpy legs than to stand up. After taking a dozen of very careful steps I manage to reach the space and try to peek into it no surprise can't see a thing.
But at least it seems to be empty. While I was thinking, howling sound gets close at one point then gets far don't know if it’s getting near or far. So, doesn't have a much of a choice.
Tries to step into the space stumbles and rolls down into the space hits my head and goodnight.
And hello wait why does it seems like I'm somewhere else? First of all, it's bright and I seem to be in a giant palace lobby and there is podium with an interface on it in the middle and ten doors with a question mark on it leading to who knows where and stairs leading to second floor.

But there is only one door with what seems to be nut on it on second floor.
And again, it seems to me it's so called mind palace. Still strange that I know that.
Well never mind that, first let’s take a look at the doors. And with that thought I'm in front of the first door from the left. It seems I don't possess a physical body. Simple wooden door with a grey question mark on it. Let’s try opening it. Locked well that was disappointing. Let’s try other doors all locked. Shit. Now last one on second floor.
Let’s see this one seems different from other doors feels metallic and it wasn't a nut, it was a brain on it. Don't know why but I feel strangely familiar with this door. Okay here goes nothing.
Click.
Finally, at least one is open. Let’s see, bright room full of books. Still feels familiar, strange.
Blip, Blip, Blip.
Interface on the podium seems to be blinking. Huh curious let’s take look first. I close the door and will myself to the first floor front of the podium.
Now let’s take a look.

Please do not repost my work elsewhere without my written permission. What type of reader is this book for? You might enjoy The Last Orellen if you like... Clever and resourceful protagonists. Big fantasy worlds. Multiple cultures, lots of characters, many different types of magic--this story is expansive rather than closely focused on a narrow storyline. Progression fantasy that takes its time. Our main character will be progressing through magical ranks, but this is going to be a lengthy story. If you're more about the journey than the destination, this might be the book for you. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
