《Enlightened Violence》Chapter 59: Ulterior Motives

A woman wearing an elegant, grey business suit stepped out of the aircraft and began looking around as she briefly glanced at the captured gang bosses, her eyes glinting in a calculative light.
She then turned to look at Kaden, who was slowly walking towards her with a smirk. "Mr. Solomon," the woman greeted as Kaden finally stood in front of her with Briar and Vilhelm standing behind him.
"Charmaine," Kaden greeted with a nod, his eyes slightly shifting as he took a brief look at Charmaine's bodyguard, seemingly giving him an appraising look.
"You're just in time," Kaden added as he turned to look at Charmaine again after giving the bodyguard, who was giving him a similar appraising look, a smile.
"Just in time for what, exactly?" Charmaine asked with a raised eyebrow as she looked at Kaden with a neutral expression.
"Just in time to receive your gift," Kaden replied with a chuckle while gesturing towards the captured gang bosses. "Let me just wrap it up, and you can take it with you," he added as he began walking towards the captives.
"Listen, Kaden, we can still work this-" Tony tried to say something, but that was as far as he could go as Kaden poked his forehead with a glowing finger, causing him to go quiet as his body collapsed on the ground.
He then proceeded to do the same to the rest of the gang bosses, ignoring whatever pleas, curses, threats, and deals they had to spout.
"There you go," Kaden said as he stood over the unconscious bodies of the gangsters with a smile. "Four gang bosses, all wrapped up just for you," he added with a chuckle as he gestured towards them.
"Oh, how generous of you, Mr. Solomon," Charmaine replied with a bemused expression. "But I'm afraid I can not accept such generosity without giving you something in return," she added with a frown.
Kaden, of course, had an ulterior motive for giving the gang bosses to Charmaine, and after being tricked by him once, she could already guess what the crafty young man had in mind.
However, there was little she could do about it. The little secrets inside the gang leaders' heads would be tremendously helpful to her in beating down her competition, leaving little room for her to resist the temptation.
Charmaine knew that Kaden knew her unwillingness to let go of such an opportunity, which made this situation much worse, as she now had to play into the young man's palm knowingly.

"I will accept your gift, and it will settle your debt to me," she added with a frown, causing the young man to frown as well. "I will also forget about the little trick you pulled on me when you arrived here as well," she added, trying to cut her losses and denying Kaden any excuses to bother her anytime soon.
She still wanted to teach Kaden a lesson, two lessons, if you count the less than subtle way he's trying to use her right now, but she needed to focus on the opportunity in front of her now.
She first needed to make full use of the vacancy in the Fallout town's northern side gang vacancy Kaden action's left, and then she needed to milk the gang leaders themselves for every bit of dirty secret they knew.
It will be a long process, but it will pave her way towards much greater successes, and that is why she couldn't afford to have the young man bothering her with any more of his schemes.
"Now, who's being generous?" Kaden asked, his frown disappearing only to be replaced by a smile. However, Charmaine could already tell he was holding back a sigh of disappointment, causing her to smile as well.
"Now then, if you'll excuse me," Charmaine said as she turned around and started walking towards her aircraft, already forgetting why she came here in the first place.
"I imagine I'll be busy in the next couple of days, so I'll be taking my leave now," she added as she entered the aircraft without bothering to turn around.
Charmaine's bodyguard closed the door behind her and made his way towards Kaden as the aircraft flew into the air. "I'll call for a vehicle to transport the prisoners with your permission, Mr. Solomon," he said in a neutral tone as he faced Kaden.
"Suit yourself," Kaden said with a nod. "But I don't think I got your name yet...?" he added with a thoughtful expression, as if trying to remember the bodyguard's name.
"My name is Viktor," the bodyguard said with a neutral expression, extending a hand towards Kaden.
"Viktor, eh? That's a good name!" Kaden replied as he shook Viktor's hand. "My name's Kaden," he added, raising an eyebrow as Viktor began squeezing his hand, prompting him to do the same.
Viktor faintly smiled as Kaden rose to his challenge, but he didn't take it too far as he let go of the latter's hand with a polite nod. "Then I won't take much of your time, Mr. Solomon," he said as he began fiddling with the watch on his wrist.

"I'll take those guys and get out of your hair as soon as my ride gets here," he concluded, putting back his neutral expression.
Kaden just nodded at him and turned around, making his way towards the compound as he signaled for Briar and Vilhelm to follow him.
...
"Casualty report?" Kaden remarked in a neutral tone as he stood in the compound common room, facing Clark and the others.
"None, but we have 13 injures," Clark replied as he adjusted his glasses. "Ten of them are flesh wounds, with the remaining three being a bit severe," he added in a calm tone.
"Nothing too serious or life-threatening, but the three with severe injures will need a couple of weeks off," he concluded with a shake of his head.
"Good enough for our first battle," Kaden said with a nod. "Make sure the injured are well-taken care of and prepare a list of whoever performed outstandingly during the battle," he instructed.
"I already have it ready," Clark replied in a matter-of-fact tone, shrugging his shoulders, earning a nod of satisfaction from Kaden.
"Good job," Kaden praised. "Leave the list in my office, and see if you can gather some volunteers to form a party for raiding the bases of the defeated gangs," Kaden added while gesturing with his hand to the side.
"I'm sure everyone is exhausted, so don't force anyone and forget about it if not enough people volunteer for the job," he concluded, understanding that his subordinates will need some time to rest after the battle.
"We'll be very busy in the next couple of days, so I want you to make sure everyone gets the appropriate amount of rest, including you all," Kaden remarked as he looked at Clark, Briar, Vilhelm, and Arden, making them nod.
"That's all fine, but I have some questions!" Briar said as she raised her hand with a smile.
"Of course you do," Kaden said with a sigh. "Ask away," he added while gesturing for her to start talking.
"Why did you give away the gang leaders to that Charmaine lady just like that?" she asked. "They should have been worth more than the debt you owe to that woman," she added with squinted eyes.
"Because we just did something big and have a lot of eyes on us right now, so we need to lie low for a while," Kaden replied with a shrug. "Giving Charmaine the gang bosses and all the information they have will cause a lot of chaos in fallout town when she tried to make use of them," he added, raising a finger.
"It wouldn't be strange for the status quo in fallout town to completely collapse depending on how Charmaine goes about her business," Kaden explained with a shrug.
"The ensuing chaos would give us many options to grow as a group since all eyes will be on Charmaine," Kaden said with a smirk, raising another finger.
"But if it was that easy to flip everything around here, then why didn't anyone just capture those gang leaders already before us?" Arden said with a frown, scratching his head with a confused expression.
"Because those gang bosses are protected by the big shots who hired them to do their dirty work in the first place," Kaden replied in a calm tone.
"But why didn't the big shots protecting the gang bosses show up to rescue them or help them in taking us out?" Arden asked again, his expression a mixture of realization and even more confusion.
"They didn't help them take us out because they didn't think they needed the help," Kaden replied with a smirk. "That's why I held back as much as I did when I raided Marcus' nightclub," he added.
"And they didn't show up to save them because they didn't have enough time to do it," Kaden concluded with another shrug.
"Well, I guess that's why you're the boss, boss," Arden said with a laugh as he rubbed his bald head, wearing a cheerful expression.
"All the scheming shenanigans aside..." Vilhelm said from the side with a grunt. "What's our next move?" he asked as he lit up a cigarette.

Re: Dragonize
After an unexpected turn of events, Drew must now survive in a world full of challenges with life-or-death stakes. Gone are the days when the biggest problems to face were awkward small-talk at physics department luncheons or mountains of lab work; this former physicist is now adrift in an unfamiliar land without any equipment. Now, Drew's only tool (if it can be called that) is a System, which provides constant reminders of all of the things that are still out of reach for a low-level being who's just arrived in a new world. Luckily, Drew has one powerful asset when taking on the challenges of this new world: surviving violent conflict is a lot easier when you have the power of a dragon at your disposal. Still, Drew has always considered violence a last resort. Why turn to fists (or claws) when a bit of quiet consideration might expose a better path forward? Maybe a life of quiet contemplation is still within reach for this former academic researcher. ...Or maybe not. It probably won't be a life of bloodless pacifism. Additional information for those who wish to calibrate their expectations (I'm adding this based on a few comments I received from readers who feel that the story is not what they expected from a dragon-themed story): Re: Dragonize is not a power fantasy -- or at least, it's not intended to be one. Re: Dragonize is a progression fantasy starting with a protagonist who must start at the bottom (or close to it), and work gradually upwards, making incremental progress with plenty of setbacks along the way. The protagonist, as someone coming from the world of academia, tends to be cautious, methodical, and contemplative. As such, expect this story to contain more than a few digressions as the main character takes the time to pontificate on a variety of topics ranging from Newtonian physics and horology to the nature of existence and the ethical dilemmas associated with being an obligate carnivore.
