《On The Run From A Dragon》Day Five: Part Two

She gave Tom a quick squeeze to end the hug and then ran upstairs. Tom didn't know what she was doing, but he had to get stuff ready in the kitchen. Grabbing sugar, flour, rubbing alcohol and some small plastic bags. He made five bags, two full of flour and three with about a half cup of sugar each. Tom pocketed the alcohol and picked up all of the bags. When he was about to walk up the stairs, June threw down his suit coat. He caught it and placed the bags in different pockets. As he put on the coat, a question pop in his mind. 'How did she know?'
June came down the stairs wearing blue work overalls with her dress stuffed inside and his backpack. She walked pass him as he followed her to the back door. June garb a set of keys off the wall before leaving. In the backyard she unlocked the large work shed. When she opened the door, there was a all most new looking motorcycle from world war two. Tom looked over at her and she answered him before he could ask a question.
"It's a 1942 Harley and yes, I do know how to drive it."
June smiled and giggled as she leaned against his arm.
"Also you have to hold onto me."
He just sighed as June tied down the backpack to one of the side racks. She rolled the bike outside and Tom closed the shed door. Before setting down she hit the kick starter and got the engine purring. With the motorcycle being low tech, his magic shouldn't affect it. Shouldn't being the key word. Putting his arms round her as he sat down, she had a cheshire's grin. When they got on the road, she gave the engine a lot of gas and Tom held on tighter. He notes her work overalls had a lot stuff in the pockets. A black jeep full of kobolds passed them as they got out of the neighborhood. The jeep slammed down on its brakes and turned round to going after them. Tom pulled the alcohol bottle and popped the cap. Something shot by Tom's head as the jeep got close. Looking back at them, he could see they had long mean looking rifle and one of the kobolds was loading a dart. Placing a finger at the top of the bottle, he squeezed it as hard as he could. The fire beam hit the front grill and flames moved across the jeep like a living thing. The tires screamed like a banshee as it come to a stop, they jumped out of the jeep. The one's on fire dropped to the ground and rolled round. Tom let go of the empty bottle and pulled out a flour bag. June turned on to a divided highway and there was another jeep on the other side. It drove over the grass divider to make a U-turn and followed suit. Inside the jeep Zabel was talking on the radio.

"Beta-6 has eyes on White King and Black Queen. Handing North on Atreides Highway and passing Harkonnen Drive, over."
There was some radio static as a reply came in.
"Copy that, maintain distance and report movement. White Queen inbound, over."
Pressing down on the transmit button again.
"Orders received, over."
Tom ripped open the bag whit hie teeth and threw the flour in the air. Zabel told her diver.
"Don't let any of that white shit get on my jeep."
The diver didn't say anything as she moved into the right lane to avoid the cloud. From the back set the squad joker chimed in.
"Hey Sarge, that's what he said."
Just as they were about to pass the cloud, there was a Whoosh as the Fire ball exploded. The jeep flipped over one time before coming to a rest in the ditch. Tom didn't see any more black jeeps, but he kept his head on a swivel. He could hear someone yelling over the engine.
"Give Me My Husband You Bitch!"
Tom looked up.

Prey No More
Imagine being given a second chance at life. Not only that but with a life you chose (sort of). This is exactly the situation that our character is in. He was once a Biology Graduate Student involved in a special program in Alaska studying Polar Bears. In an ironic twist of fate his life is ended by exactly that which he was trying to study. Now, in a new world, he refuses to be anything but the top of the food chain. IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a story I began writing a year and a half ago and decided to shelf, I'm coming back to it now because I miss writing; however, I have not carved out any time specifically for this and, as of now, it will be something I do on the side for fun. Currently I have 9 chapters plus a prologue written; I'm going to be going through and editting it to be in a present tense (from past), as well as changing some of the story and grammar. Let me know what you think, and thanks for reading.

The Beta Test
Our nameless narrator participates in a beta test for an early VRMMO game Meridian 60. That's not the real name but it captures the spirit of the adventure given the chronological and contextual era of the game. His character is unique and special but purely for mundane reasons and not because of any inherent or social significance. The first chapter which is mandatory to submit a story on RR serves as a bit of a prologue with some exposition, although I limited that to a reasonble level. I plan to begin releasing additional chapters starting Thursday, to align with the 48 hour submission approval process and also because I have something to do Wednesday. I haven't written anything but the summary and first chapter, nor have I plotted anything out. This is because my plan is to release roughly 34000 words a day, 10 chapters of ~12.5 pages each, for 3 days at which point the story will be complete. I'd have liked to plan for more but handling the interface tables and so forth needed for a data heavy litrpg slows down the writing process. 100k words is a bit short, a standard pre epic fantasy 300 page spec fic novel, but this is mostly a writing exercise and I am considering a longer project if I can maintain the pace. Probably do a different concept, maybe a dungeon core, over 5 days, since a 500 page novel is more common these days. Slight subversion of VRMMO stories Stat heavy/crunchy No paying your bills by gaming No out of game conspiracies No angst, interpersonal drama, or damsels/dudes in distress Schedule is 30000 words a day excepting the first chapter, a limitation of RRs fiction submission system Fantasy, high magic, male lead, no party, guild, or harem No gore, some profanity, no sexual content, and no current plans for anything traumatic
