《Freedom in the New World》Base Defense

James was on the second floor of his guild base, the wolf’s den. He thought it could use a little more life, so he spent about an hour adding a few small lakes with fish, lots of trees and plant life. He wanted to make this a place that his soldiers would find comforting. A place to call home, a place that they would gladly lay down their lives to protect.

He occasionally passed by some of the Dire werewolves as they patrolled the outer parts of the second floor. He was proud of that little bit of A.I. he had given them. When he passed them, he always made sure to say, “You are doing a great job, thank you for your hard work.” He knew they did not understand his words now, but when they did, he hoped that they would appreciate his words.

It had only been about half a month since the game had started, James knew most people would still be in the low levels, with a few of higher levels mixed in. James sighed as his guards perked up and began running for the stairs. He was wondering what was happening when he receive the notice.

Your base is under siege.

Your soldiers have been dispatched.

James flew at top speed up the stair out into the open air. He flew up to a good height to see where the attack was coming from. He did not have to look very hard for very long, as he noticed the long line of Dire Werewolves racing toward the northern gate. James flew in that direction getting closer to the ground as he approached, as to not make himself an easy target for possible mages.

James found Fenrir helping to fortify the city gate. “How many are out there?” James asked, Fenrir quickly turning around and stating, “One hundred, and I smell the stench of my jailers on them all.” This was not what James had wanted today.

James did not want to have to pay for the repairs to the city, so he did not hold back. James flew up and quickly flew over the large group of players. The took a few shots at him, he managed to avoid most of the hits, but those that hit hurt. James landed on the opposite side of the raiding party, putting them between him and the city. He raised Fenrir’s Howl to his lips and blew, when presented the option he stated, “Legion”.

The legion was summoned but it did not garner the result he had expected from the group of players. He was stunned as they began to cheer and charge him and his legion.

WARNING! THE ENEMIES POSSESS THE TITLE, “BEAST HUNTER”. WHICH INCREASE THEIR DAMAGE AGINST, AND EXP GAIN FROM, BEAST TYPE MONSTERS. YOUR SOULDIERS COUNT AS BEASTS!

That was when the first notice came in.

Dire werewolf soldier has been slain.

Then another.

Dire werewolf soldier has been slain.

And another.

Dire werewolf soldier has been slain.

He knew what was happening, these where players of higher levels. So, he ordered his legion, “Advance and slaughter the enemies!” In the distance James heard a howl that sounded closer to a roar.

Avatar of Fenrir has used skill, [Fenrir’s Howl]

Fenrir’s Howl – Increases the stats of all friendly beasts in a half mile radius of Fenrir’s avatar.

James watched as the members of his legion seemed to grow broader and taller. They became cloaked in a red aura. Their own cries were deafening. They had received their order’s and they would lay down their lives to make it so. It would be expensive to resurrect those guards they raiders had slain thus far, especially with his low funds now. James felt by the time this was over they would not be the only NPC’s that would need to be raised before this was done.

He began to receive notifications for and EXP from, the players being slain by his Legion. He would use the legions summoned with this item to make even some high-level players think twice before they attacked him. These players before him, he could tell these players were simply fools. Drawn to the power promised to them like moths to a flame. They greed would be their undoing. James wondered if he would meet the greed kings in his time here in Yggdrasil.

By the time it was all over, 56 of the city’s guards had been slain, along with 2000 of the legion he had summoned. The would be back, that is the problem with these kinds of games. They always came back. Anyway, he was happy to have gained four levels from them.

James noticed that these notifications were not coming through his personal system. Instead they were coming through the regular system. His system seemed either incomplete or did not deal with those aspects.

“Hello again James. We have been expecting this.” “Hello again Administrator.” “Here are your options.” Said the admin with a sigh.

Knowledge

James thought to give the man a break. “Knowledge.” “That’s a surprise what would you like to know?” “Are there artificers class levels in this game, and if so, how much of their D&D functionality remains?” “That’s a rather strange question, I hope you don’t mind but are you planning to be a craftsman?”

“I plan to be many things, and thus I will be a Jack of all trades, being a craftsman is a good start.” “That is good to know, to answer your question, yes there are Artificer classes in Yggdrasil. As to their functionality, what were you curious about?”

“Artificers in D&D have a unique ability to attune to more magic items than normal people can. Has that functionality been converted to allow for the use of multiple World class items without them conflicting?”

“I’m surprised that you still have a points left after those questions. Yes, but obviously that is restricted to the higher-level artificers.” “That is fine with me. As for the points remaining.” James puts his hand to his chin to signify that he was thinking.

“Can you just revive the NPC guards that got killed?” several seconds passed. “Yeah, I can do that, and with that we can conclude our business…for now.” He added after a moments pause. James could not help but smile at the comment.

James heard the admin type something on his keyboard, and then he hung up. James investigated his inventory and found 400 million gold. “Well defending your base from high level players is very profitable.” Then James thought how this amount must not scale very well toward the end game. Since players can run a guild base into debt by attacking it over and over to break a lot and then retreating.

As he investigated his inventory further, he found what appeared to be the loot from players that had died. That had not happened when he took the city, but then again, he may not have received those items because others had already picked them up. These were questions for another time.

James was now Level 28. He had gained five levels since he had obtained the system. So, he put them into his racial levels.

Sergeant 1 lv (Amended from leader in chapter 13)

James was very happy with his status thus far. He had to be one of the most powerful level 28 players on earth right now. James proceeded to sort through the items he had gotten. It was all pretty much junk, basic armors, basic weapons, with a few things of higher quality sprinkled in.

James began to equip the guards with the gear from the players to be better prepared for the next raid. James looked at his own armor, he was still wearing the armor that Fenrir have made for him, along with his helm, Heimdall. He did not have any normal weapons though all he had left was his staff. “Time to find a crafter, or…I can make a craftsman.”

James’ mind was suddenly filled with his memories of Billy Mays. “Nah he wouldn’t be a good crafter; it would be funny though.” James quickly decided that a gag character would not sit well with him, especially when they arrived in the New World.

James walked to the center of the city and opened his base options and added a third floor to the base, the cost was not actually that much only about 20 million gold. He would have to add more floors later when he had a lot more money.

James needed to get stronger, so he sucked it up and opened the cache up item store, he must have spent 1000 American dollars on the ability to have a ring on each finger and use their effects. It was a purchase James was both mortified and ecstatic about. He hated playing pay to win games, but Yggdrasil would become his reality so he would deal with it.

James pulled out the NPC creation and customization tools he had received when he had conquered the city. “Time to make my first NPC.” So, James made a tall goblin. He paid the 250 million gold to get him up to level 65.

Hobgoblin 10 lvl

Ogre 5 lvl

Skeletal mage 15 lvl

When he was done with the basics what stood before him was a large skeletal Ogre. “No that won’t do.” James used his tools to give the ogre his skin back. “Not much better.” This ogre was very ugly, a pot-bellied long nose, ugly monster. James began the long task of making the NPC more pleasant looking. When he was done, this undead goblin craftsmen looked like a Greek god.

He had a six pack, well-toned arms made to forge. Upon the goblin’s brow were three horns that came out of his forehead and then turned upward. He had short tusks, his skin was red, green, and black. His eyes were not the pinpoints of light iconic to liches, instead they were normal eyes. One with a bright crimson iris, the other with a shining blue iris. He open his description, he had to give him a name before he could edit his backstory. “Hephaestus named for the god of the same name.”

He looked into his eyes and spoke to him, “Hello Hephaestus, it is nice to meet you. Welcome to the world. My name is James.” The NPC did not respond. He knew however, that he would remember this moment, he would ensure it.

Hephaestus

Hephaestus named for the god of the same name. He will forever remember his first moments, how his creator gave him life, and then made it eternal. How he granted him the knowledge to live up to his name, the power to make things with his own two hands.

He was granted an appearance that would be appealing to others, and a body unyielding, that he may better carry out his work.

He was made for the natural goblin curiosity that he would possess. For their propensity for cleverness and making new and unique items. Their minds granting them a different perspective.

Hephaestus is not a savage monster as others like him could be. He is a being of integrity, with a will to bend and shape all that is beneath the sun and stars. He is a being of order and disapproves of those who would use their might to oppress others weaker than themselves. He is very careful with what he crafts, and who it goes to.

James moved Hephaestus to an empty shop and after spending 50K gold on all that he would need. James quickly though together a script that would allow Hephaestus to run the shop and even interact with customers to a small degree. He filled Hephaestus’ inventory with items, realizing it would not be enough he bit his lip and bought a cache up item to expand Hephaestus’ inventory.

He set Hephaestus to work crafting him a new sword, one made of adamantine that some of the players who tried to raid him dropped. James looked at Hephaestus with joy in his heart. He was the first but would not be the last.
