《Red Star Outlaw | A Weird Space Western》36 | GATHERIN’ THE POSSE

A towering man burst through the door so fast, it gave Sheriff Frumt a start, nearly knocking him out of his chair, making him drop his glazed rye muffin and reach for his gun. The man scolded Frumt with a mere gaze, a look that could stop a heartbeat, and at the very least give him pause. Frumt pulled his hand away from his gun slowly.
"Easy, Sheriff," he said, not hiding his disdain, focusing it on Frumt's bulging paunch held up by a large belt buckle. He flashed Frumt a badge. "I'm U.S. Marshal Tracy Irving. I've come all the way from Earth on official business. A fugitive and murderer has found refuge in your fine city of New Oklahoma, a certain Roy Rothspalt. Yeah, you heard that right. The reverend. He's got a laundry list of crimes, some of which include murdering a slew of innocent victims. You wouldn't want to harbor a murdering fugitive, now would you, mister...?"
The sheriff brushed muffin crumbs out of his mustache. "Frumt. Sheriff George Frumt." He nodded.
"I'll take your nod to mean that you do not want to harbor a murdering criminal from the US government. We all know how unforgiving they can be towards those that aid fugitives. Now, we don't have much time, and no room for error. So as a representative of the United States Justice System, I have the authority to gather and deputize a taskforce. And seeing that Mars is a colony of Earth, America in particular, that would put you at the mercy of my request. You following me?"
The Terran lawman gripped the desk with an oversized ham fisted smartarm, splintering the wood of Frumt's desk with little more than a pinch.
Frumt swallowed and managed to get out an, "Uh huh."

"Good. Since I'm not familiar with the men in these parts, I'm going to need you to help me gather a posse. Can you handle that?"
Frumt stuttered.
"What was that?"
"H—how many men do ya need, Marshal?"
The marshal's chin tugged to one side. "I'd say no less than fifteen would do. Roy's a sly bugger. Got the whole town fooled. Pulled the wool over everyone's eyes. There's also a chance he's got a woman hostage."
"That's terrible. I'll pick a handful of men I can trust."
"Once you're done, meet me out front."
"Where will you be?"
"I'm going to figure out Roy's current whereabouts and keep tabs on him. You just worry about that posse. And believe me, the US will reward you handsomely, but only if we see this thing done right."
The marshal nodded, coaxing a nod from Frumt.
"Thirty minutes, Sheriff. Thirty. See you out front."
As soon as the door shut and the marshal moved past the windows, Frumt retrieved the muffin from the ground, dusting it off before stuffing the rest of it in his mouth.
He waited until finishing the muffin before sending a comm to Sujin McCrory.
"Hi. Yes. Guess who I just spoke with. The U.S. Marshal you warned me about. No. I did what you required. He wants to take action this afternoon. Less than thirty minutes. I will offer him assistance, until the time comes. Guess how many men he asked me for. No. More. Yeah, fifteen. Haha. I'll bring twenty, and have ten more waiting in the alleys and rooftops. He won't get Roy. And he won't escape."
No sooner had he ended the comm conversation did he get a ping. It was a notification from his cred account. He'd just acquired a hefty sum. Frumt grinned.

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

Whatever End
The fight is over, the enemy destroyed, the world is saved… technically. “Stand Fast!” The general called over the din of battle. “We will hold this line! The future depends on us! To whatever end!” Richard believed him, and that’s why he had bound his soul to the Arcstone, in hopes of containing the rift forever. If only he had learned more before making that final sacrafice. When the battle is done, and the world is ‘saved’ what happens to those left behind? And.. what should he do, now that it’s over? Cover art by gej302

The outside world now slowly unfolds. ------------------------------------------------- BTW, since the review title wasn't edited. I have to say, my work is not a poem compilation. I'm writing fiction. But I'm not a writer, I'm just a reader. :) P.s ------------------------------------------------- Story Progress: 1. Blurb is fulfilled on Chapter Three and Chapter Four 2. Story Arc One, The Savior is fulfilled on Story Arc Five 3. Yes, there is fighting scenes. Three Calamities have been Eliminated in Dandia -- The wide island. 4. The prologue is nearing to begin. 5. Too many conflicts. ------------------------------------------------- Past tense - When I just narrate a past without much actual actions. I mean like a news, or just telling or reporting the past. Present tense - Current event. And flashback with actions. I love flash fiction so world building is not on this story, like narrating a room, narrating a character's traits, etc. As possible, I want them to think, have their decision, etc. etc. etc. etc. Hallo guys, Help me locate my typos on Story Arc 5. I still don't want to edit Story Arc 1-4. I can't wait to reach story arc Chapter Six(I won't spoil). My outlines and very huge flowcharts are waiting. Sorry, about that, I can understand English without format so, each time I'm looking for typos I was hooked in my story and I didn't realize I forgot about them.
