《The Mechanist》Chapter 8: Learning with time

I forgot to add something to chapter 7.

It is concerning the economy. The books were around 510 coppers (5s 10c) so give you a midpoint a normal family of 2-3 needs about 4-6 copper a day 5 on average.

And for a year they need about 1600 on average so the books are worth about 1/3 of a small family yearly money for food. And most families, farmers mostly make just a bit above that about 2000c a year without it being taxed as for the tax im guessing ill make it around 10% for the human kingdom/s so it comes about 1800. This should give you and idea about the price on books, not to mention they are quite hard to find. The royal family has a full control over the printing press and they aren't sharing. Most books are printed by companies owned by them so most books are rarely produced on demand, for instance story books can be printed by the press for a fee since they have no useful value other than entertainment, after censorship though. Same for magic encyclopedias and so on. Well in short books are on a short leash and to ensure noble superiority both in political power and might as a whole advance magic books are rare if not nonexistent and history books censored.

And now for the chapter.

-----

After my second birthday. Thing went on fast, I barely felt it go. I mostly trained. With both might and magic... gotta love that expression. My mana after the potion took effect was low..very low.

I could barley make a single fiber after a whole day of concentration, and I rarely had even that. Well that was with my internal mana. When I used the mana stones Rose gave me I could make 3 fibers, with the mana in all 13 stones, 1 from the big one and 2 for every 6 small ones. So making another mana core and eating it is another pipe dream, for now. it was a nice idea though. I experimented with the mana stones and found them quite intriguing to say the least. Their size and capacity are connected quite close. You would expect the bigger stone to not only store more but recharge faster, but it was the opposite. The bigger the stone is the slower it absorbs mana.

I still haven't found out why. Drawing mana from the stones is also difficult. No change in the different sized stoned though, just the total amount of mana I can draw.

"I wonder if I can make a mana stone array. A big one in the middle with small ones recharging it"- Was one of my thoughts on the matter. The idea was solid but reality is cruel. As I learned before it is harder to draw mana from multiple stones. Even with my manipulation talents I can manage 2-3 stones max. The array works but, I need to do it manual, no way around it...yet. I can triple the regeneration of the big mana stone using 2 smaller, by siphoning mana from them as they gain it combined with its natural regen.

Later in my experiments I tried making an array only of smaller mana stones and it....blew up. Apparently when you overload a mana stone it goes boom. Yeah boom. I'm glad I overloaded a small stone. When I did I panicked and threw it at my practice target, which is made of straw with a stone plate in the middle for me to easily point out where my stones land. The mana stone landed on the top and exploded, straw sent flying everywhere. The fireball was around 5cm or so but the shock-wave was strong, well it made the straw scatter which is quite light.

A nice idea popped in to my mind and was quickly suppressed, mana bombs and mana arms(from firearms) were a no no. They would probably disrupt the balance of the world too much, and I haven't read the encyclopedia yet.

As I spend more mana my capacity grew. As it did I tried to train my only natural skill, mana manipulation. I used it here and there but I never really trained it. it takes me almost a whole day to make a single fiber and the stones recharge really slow. The small ones take less than hour and the big a bit under six hours.Still faster than me though. I can force mana in to the stones in order to increase the speed but its slow. My small mana cap takes about 4 days to regenerate. And if I remember Marks said that the amount I played with on my second birthday takes days, I don't even want to think about it.

At best im weaker than a mana stone with the same capacity as me. I hope i can become better. For now one can only hope.

So I tried to use the stones to supplement my mana Regen. I made a necklace from all the stones. The big one in the middle with the small ones aling the hoop 6 on either end. Size wise the big one is about the size of grown mans thumb nail, and the small ones the size of the pinky nail.

Author>"Sorry no pic for now."

This way ill always keep it close and ill be able to siphon mana from every stone in order.

And so I did. Every day I would have physical training and during breaks I would practice mana by draining myself making a fiber and playing around with it. Making it move, making shapes and basically everything I can think of that requires me to manipulate mana. Even my ability to control the speed and amount of siphoned mana increased along with my natural capacity.

When I got some free time I even practices with my carpentry tools. Nothing too complex. Squares, triangles and what not I would go to the village with my parents from time to time and sell them to Rose. I did tell her not to tell that I made them, otherwise people wouldn't buy them. I soon started making wooden animals, well I tried, most were still good for children's toys but, wouldn't become a collectors item anytime soon. The most complicated thing I made was a crossbows body, with a hole for the mechanism and a nice wood stock, which comes off.

I didn't have time for smithing but I could do it later. I'm almost 3 years old what do you expect, to be the best craftsman? I can always do it later.

from time to time when I go to the city I would see Sam trying to win Arlie's heart but he wasn't doing a good job of it. I know I'm anti-social and probably run from a girl who tries to hit on me. Who can blame me? it is much easier to make a wooden crossbow that outperforms a normal one, than to date a woman...did I say that I'm only 3?

So with my inexperience I decided to help. I explored the forest around the village and found a nice place just upstream from the river that goes right by Jacks smithy. When I told Sam. He was overjoyed. I had to kick him in the knee to calm him down and give him a plan. He needs to wait either to early spring where the flowers bloom or late spring where the petals fall from the trees...no need to specify why. This though I'll touch on later, as Sam had to score some points with Arlie before he can use this place for the final blow.

As for the books I got well they were different. Since my own magic training was going well I left the "Basics of Magic". Cuz you know I made a frigging mana core on day one. And I doubt it can teach me anything knew, at least until I have more mana for experiments. From all the training I was getting somewhat bored as a kid, no other kids my age wanted to play, being avoided like the plague hurts a bit especially when I don't know why. Dad will probably tell me eventually. So I read the "immortal Hero" and it wasn't what I expected.

instead of some demigod Dragon slaying bad ass I got a story about reincarnation. The first few pages say that sometimes a soul will have so many regrets that even turning to a wrath, which is a vengeful ghost of some kind, will not satisfy it so it reincarnates. it goes about telling the story of an ancient king who created a prospering kingdom with his own hands. There was no poverty, no disease, every one was working for a common goal, it had magical marvels that none have seen or heard today.

On his death bead the king had no one worth inheriting the kingdom, so died with regret not only to himself but for his people. His desire was so strong that the gods took pity on him and reincarnated him. He was born in a poor family and slowly educated himself, for the language was different, and he though he was in the one of the many other kingdoms. His desire to return to his people drove him to new heights.

Eventually he learned the hard truth. it has been centuries and what he once created was devoured by greed and hatred, his kingdom was no more. Even with sadness filling his heart he still found purpose, he decided to recreate his kingdom and bring peace to the world. To summarize he single handedly rose to noble status and unified the human kingdoms. This time he raised 12 candidates to the throne. The King never gave the kingdom a name, he left it to the successor to the throne which he chose personally from the candidates. The new kingdom name was Elora.

Well I got curious about reincarnation and asked mom and dad. They said that every has something similar. After that they asked me if I was one. I answered them though I twisted the story a little I told them I was born something like a talented mage long ago and due to the expectations of my peers I was overworked to death. Since I wanted happier life for myself from since I can remember I guess it was the reason for my reincarnation. I also told them that I will be no hero knowledge is power and even one used for peace can be as easily used for war. Surprisingly they both agreed with my opinion.

The conversation went on to explain that I need to hide my reincarnation due to people who desire power, are often willing to go to extremes to get it. And to make sure no one else find out. So far only my parents and JAck know so it's okay. But I shouldn't tell anyone even my would be lover, those are my dads words before I exited the room with a blush. Okay girls are hard for me to deal with and I have a vivid imagination....you do the math.

The second book was "Encyclopedia of the world and its races" firstly I skimmed trough in order to get a feel on it. And man humans got an ego. Human culture and partial history occupies majority of the book. The only thing I learned is that the story about the immortal Hero held some truth to it. Apparently after the immortal Kings death..I know right immortal dies, his successors fight for the throne even if the king chose one, and ended up making the 12 independent human kingdoms. So now each kingdom claims they are the heir to his will blab blah blah... you can guess the rest. What I was interested in was the intro.

Apparently there was some old race which is not mentioned for some reason. Mediated some great ancient war between all the races. it even used imposed its own language, time and math system in order to give every one a common tongue. All races took the language and kept their own but the humans just out right took it as theirs. As for the time systme it used the four months each named after a season with 92 days each so it was similar to home and apparently there was no need to fix the calendar. The 368 days matched the seasons perfectly and there were no inaccuracies.

And there are the classics arrogant tree hugging elves. Smithing underground living dwarves, green brutish orcs, animal like furry beastkin and some other barely mentioned minorities-feiries, ogers, goblins and so on. Most of them I even saw in the adventurers guide marked as monsters, I think I saw a bandit in there as well so I'm guessing it shows everything that poses danger whether it is intelligent or not. Well other than the classics the beastkin were the most distinct, usually in most novels they are people with animal ears or something, here they are humanoid similar to humans with fur covering their whole body, with some having slightly elongated faces, they live in tribes. Each tribe has their own city and they fight almost non stop between each other but when the time comes for actual war they all unify and attack their common enemy. I guess the in clan fights are for sport or something.

Most of the thing I mentioned were my own interpretation of the books, it almost says that humans are an all mighty ancient race. Yeah right.

As my third year came to a close Sam and Arlie got closer and the finishing move I thought him did a pretty nice job. They are now officially a pair.

A week before my birthday I heard a knock on our small house door. I dont know why but my stomach tied in a knot.
