《First Bite》31. Rules of the hunt

Wil was distracted not by the violence around him but by the unexpected noise.

The guard at the front gate, whose name he couldn't recall was trying desperately to get back to his body that laid dead in the rain.

Wil watched again and again as the guard tried fervently to pull himself to his body, trying to get back to the life that had so abruptly ended.

Wil had tried it himself when his own body first died but the results were like trying to catch smoke in the air.

Then he watched her fight the two guards at the front door, their guns were clearly firing but no pop or blast of noise was heard.

Three bullets hit her, one grazed her head and another two struck her shoulder, the force of the impact was enough to throw her off her feet.

He had seen people get shot before but not not like this woman was, blood flowed out of her downed body like water through a strainer.

Still she struggling back to her feet until she stood, indifferent to the pain, blood and empty vocies of the guards calling for her to stay down. She ignored them both until one of the men aimed higher.

It felt like watching an ongoing horror movie, a silet horror movie. She was bloody, bleeding and unflinching.

Her body moved forward as they both emptied their guns at her and quickly began reloading their weapons in a panicked sporadic movement.

The silence was unnerving and added to the horrific vision she has become.

Like earlier with the bullets she seemed to learn how to dodge by watching the movement.

Then she danced, slowly forward weaving her steps through the new onslaught of bullets.

A wild bullet still hit her in the leg but she didn't slow as she moved close to the two guards, one stopped firing and pulled out his collapsible metal baton.

With no hesitation he swung at her head, only to be grabbed by his wrist before the swing could be completed, she stepped away as the other guard's baton got a glancing blow on her shoulder.

The two guards fought with their lives on the line in the noiseless room but it was quickly over.

Having given up one screamed and tried to run into another building away from her as his companion was backhanded like hammering a nail into a wall with mute impact.

The woman looked down at the unconscious guard at her feet and stepped over him, she watched the other guard run through the back of the building to an exit that he all but clawed open to get out.

All the while her body started to put itself back together like a puzzle with pieces knocked out, bullets that didn't quite go through her body popped themselves out from under her flesh as the skin mended and returned to its original state.

Both Wil and the opened mouthed guard from the front gate looked at her like they were seeing a monster for the first time.

Wil recovered first from the shock of the situation and began to grumble about the stupidity of his former boss.

"Okay, to recap you were just killed because our boss sent me to get some teeth from a young woman." Wil said to the guard still looking between his dead body on the ground and the unconscious man on the floor as he was dragged behind the woman who just killed him like a tethered ball using some unknown force.

"So why did she kill me and not the other guard." The ethereal guard shouted in frustration.

《I thought even manthings knew you only kill what you intend to eat! 》

She sighed and pointed to the motionless lump on the floor.

《That one didn't kill people for someone called Maple.》

"I got nothing to do with that nutjob, you don't have any proof. "

The man yelled barely managing to control his ire.

《Manthing, I can see the residue of the people you killed still on you. Why would proof be necessary?》

Tony Stewart watched as the professional guards he'd hired and called themselves "the elite" fought and were haplessly knocked around like children by a young woman.

He could never get mad at the guard who ran. He could, get mad but it was far more effective to be vendictive, he used his phone to fire him and dock him for leaving work without signing out.

A car skidded to a halt at the front of the building's front door without any preamble and the front gate went flying in some random direction before implanting itself into a bush, it was a seventies black American muscle car with a white racing stripe, ill suited for London roads, just like it's driver.

The door soon burst open and the sole occupant stepped out, Tony's stomach lurched, for the first time that night he almost lost control of his bladder as Maple, his ex who he'd not seen in years stepped out of the car.

Tony looked at the monitor with growing regret. "This was a bad idea!"
