《Ascend》Chapter 56. Types

Chapter 56. Types Arthur's plan was simple. His method was to select people from the second batch in advance and train them as regular soldiers, not everyone would be able to reach level 35. The ones that did not meet the requirements by then would still be stronger than normal civilians. These soldiers, that were not able to enter the tower would be the ones responsible for protecting the citizens from monsters. Seeing that the first batch was so strong, the number of people joining would be in the hundreds. Hence, no need to worry about security problems while we are gone. It was a simple and effective plan, but there were other benefits too. I don't think Arthur thought about these when he came up with this solution, but using this we could also divide people into three types. The first batch of the soldiers was the first type, people ready to risk their lives for a small chance at changing their future. They joined just to get stronger, they did not know about the ant eggs nor did they know about the armor. They had been given an opportunity, and they dared to take it. The second batch was the second type, people who only acted when they were sure to benefit from the situation. These soldiers were those who joined after seeing the sudden growth of the first batch and this world quest was also an opportunity they did not want to miss. The ones who waited until a chance appeared to change were placed in this group. This batch would mostly include people full of greed, the ones who would choose to betray when given better things. But not everyone was like that, there might be loyal, talented, genuine people too in the group. But if they wanted to be treated on the same level as the first batch, they would need to stand out and make themselves known. The people who did not join even after this were included in the third type, people who were content with their life as it was and did not need a change. These people are scared of changes. They do not want to work and just enjoy the life they were living now, some of these people had still not accepted the situation we were in and were hoping that this was all a dream. Hope was a good thing, it was what allowed most people to continue through their struggles. This was one of the main reasons why people believe in gods, it gives them hope. But denying reality and believing things would get better is not hope, that is a delusion. "I am sorry," that was the first thing Arthur said when I met him after the announcement. "You don't need to apologize, you are the King and they are their subjects. I just want to know what is going to be used as money in the future." "I did not get time to talk about this with you because it happened just before the speech, I got another quest after we parted ways in the forest, [The start of a civilization] is what the quest is called. The conditions were to have a certain amount of people follow you for a certain period of time. It did not specify much, but now we can distribute our own insignias and contribution points. How much, their value and all the other specific details have to be decided by me. So, I was thinking that we could use those points as money. Like flour for five points, a sword for fifty, and such." This was great, the only reason we could not decide on something to be used as money was because of the possibility of someone replicating it. But these contribution points avoided that altogether. "Are you the only one who can give them? Do they come in a material form or can be seen in the status? How can normal people use them?" I asked him some of the main questions that I had regarding these points. "Every person can only have one Insignia, and these insignias hold the points. Touching them and thinking about the amount is the only way we can transfer them, and I have an unlimited amount of contribution points. I can only give them out by touching my insignia, and only the person who owns it can transfer points. But that is not true for receiving for them, even if you are not the owner of the insignia you can receive points." The process was a little complicated, and this would involve a lot of middlemen, but once we start collecting tax and all, after a certain amount of points are given out everything would become stable. We would have to make it stable, if there is a constant increase in the total amount of points, its value would drop or get concentrated in the hands of some, etc. A lot of people and their cooperation would be needed and rules had to be made, but now that we had a certain thing to use as the money we could do it. "I don't see why not, it will take some time but this will work." Arthur released the breath that he had been holding, "This was the first big decision I made on my own, without consulting you. I was nervous if this was right or not." "Arthur, I have said this before and I will say it again. Do not be scared of making decisions, if they are right, good, but if they are wrong, you make them right." "Yes, I understand. Thank you." The drafting began the next day, and the number of people that came this time was mind-boggling. Four hundred people were a lot when it was compared to the first drafting period. Everyone that enlisted in the army had to give up their insignia, which would later be replaced by the one representing our city. We also had to give it a name, as calling it 'the city' felt off. The four hundred people were then divided into thirty groups, the group leaders were the soldiers of the first batch. Most of them were below fifteen, so I would need to take them to the anthill once again. But we didn't have enough for so many people. Each group leader was going to train these people for a few days, and three of the most outstanding from each group would be given a chance to rank up. This also indicated that the rewards would be merit-based, and if you didn't work hard enough, you were going to fall behind. Garry was given an order of another hundred armors and he was happy to do it, just that this time I asked him to make an armor of a fixed measurement, which could be adjusted later on. Another great news came when all of this was being put into motion.

Void Breaker
Note: Sadly, this story is currently on hiatus :( Elizabeth Sayler had lost everything in the bombing of Reaver Stadium. Her career, her fame, her power — all of it vanished the moment she lost use of her legs. Now, she's beginning to lose hope of ever healing herself… until her world integrates into the Void. When the apocalypse comes in a flurry of System messages, everyone on earth is given a choice: give up what they value most in themselves, and acquire a path to their heart’s greatest desire. Most would hesitate, but for Liz? She has nothing to lose, and absolutely everything to gain. Armed with newfound powers in a world teeming with monsters, she’s determined to not only survive, but to somehow break the Void’s endless assault. * * * This is a small note about the portrayal of disability in this story. As much research as I do and as many people as I ask, I will in the end only be able to understand a small portion of paraplegia and similar disabilities. Therefore, if there is anything particularly disrespectful, please do not hesitate to contact me. I always intended to portray disability in a respectful way in this story, but please know that Liz as a character does not start out with a healthy view of disability. This is intentional, and a large part of her character development comes from this view changing as she learns. Disability is not something she simply "discards" at the beginning of the story, but an ongoing theme and a part of her journey.
